Today we took a huge Krakow food tour. We show you 8 dishes you need try and a few stops in between you need to see. We try two different kinds of pierogi, schabowy, golabki, borscht soup, zapiekanki, potato pancakes with goulash, pork knuckle, herring in oil, and kielbasa. Our stops along the way include the Jewish district, Krakow old town to see the trumpeter play, and Krakow Castle.

It was Ambasada Sledzia, not Sledz u Fryzjera (it's on the opposite side of the street, same owner) - but a great place anyway!
None of these places can be found on gmaps. Why didn't you just show the name of the restaurant in the video.
We wanted to showcase the food, not necessarily the restaurant. Yes, they are all found on Google maps or we never would have found them😁
Been in krakow last month frol London. Absolutely amaizing will be back again and so safe city very pleased
Just visited Kuchnia u Doroty and ordered the potato pancakes and goulash dish. It was glorious. Thanks. Went overboard, got a full order as well as a side of grilled mushrooms and tossed a few of them into the sauce. Ate half and most the sauce was absorbed. The restaurant was awesome and when packaging the rest for take away, along with a container filled to the brim with more sauce.

Herring is a snack for vodka. You should drink the whole glass at once, then swallow the vodka, exhale deeply, then bite the herring, and drink the second glass, the so-called "On the second leg"

Fun fact: polish cuisine has a number of dishes, which names refer to some other countries, but the funny thing is people from those countries mostly never heard of such dishes...
Examples:
- Placek po węgiersku - "hungarian-style potato pancake", AKA "gypsy potato pancake", AKA "rogue (or "bandit") potato pancake. In reality, goulash IS a hungarian dish, but Hungarians never pair it with potato pancakes ( or so I was told),
- Śledź po japońsku - "japanese-style herring". Japanese never heard of that. The name probably was made up, because the dish resembles a bit japanese sushi-style foods,
- Pierogi ruskie - "potato and cheese dumplings" AKA "russian pierogi". That one is actually misnomer coming from wrong translation. The polish adjective is "ruski", which CAN refer to Rosja (Russia), but in case of pierogi it actually refers to Ruś (Ruthenia), which historically was a part of polish kingdom, Red Ruthenia or Red Rus, specifically.
In Russia, they don't even know that kind of dumplings. In Ukraine, they are called "polish pierogi".
The way that polish people mostly eat pork knuckle, is with spicy mustard, few slices of plain bread and cold, light beer. Some also prefer horseradish to mustard. From what I've seen in video, you had everything, except for the beer. I mean, pork knuckle and beer is a "match made in heaven" 😁
Polish foods, that every tourist has to try, especially in Kraków:
- maczanka (bun with pulled pork and sauce mainly, there are many varieties),
- zapiekanka (again, many varieties, the most traditional is with mushrooms and cheese, sometimes also pickle),
- pączki z różą (rose jam donuts, the best ones 😁),
- obwarzanki krakowskie (braided bagels, but more tasty, than the ordinary bagels; my favorite are sprinkled with rough salt),
- kaszanka, AKA kiszka, AKA krupniok (polish blood sausage, kind of like irish haggis, but made of pigs blood and buckwheat or barley, sounds horrible, but tastes great, especially when it's hot an fried with onion; it's more of an upper silesian traditional food, but I guess every Pole knows it),
- oscypek (both "raw" and grilled, with a side of cranberry sauce; personally I prefer to eat them cold),
- korbacz AKA korboc (a variety of oscypek; it's a braided, salty string cheese, originating from Slovakia and southern regions of Poland).
Also, when you are in Kraków, and you're a fan of good coffee, you HAVE to visit "Pożegnanie z Afryką". The name refers the film "Out of Africa", based on Karen Blixen's book.
Even though I live close to Kraków, I wasn't there in years, so I don't know, if the establishment still exists, but if it does, and you go inside, the incredible aroma is overwhelming. Best coffee I ever had. You can choose from dozens of tastes, my favorites are "Five Tastes", "Irish" and "Ethiopian". The latter is a bit sour, but super-strong, if you need some "pick-me-up". You can also buy coffee there, both in whole beans, or have it ground right away. I suggest to buy whole beans and grind them at home (it keeps the aroma longer). You can even buy as little as 5 or 10 grams, and they will pack it for you. Last time I was there, they would bring you a whole china pot, full of your chosen type of coffee, and you pour it yourself. You could also order a special kind of chocolate cake, that goes perfectly with coffee. The coffee shop is in Old Town, but it's not big, so I guess it's easy to miss, it's on ulica Św Tomasza 21, I think ( St Thomas Street 21).
Love all of this! Thank you for all the new places and food to try for the next time we are in Krakow! There is always something more to learn and most of the time it takes a local to really dig deep into a city and fully understand what we are seeing and eating. 😀
Not oscypek, but redykołka. Redykołka is confused with oscypek all the time. Oscypek is a big (~700 g) spindle-shaped cheese made of at least 60% sheep milk. Redykołka comes with different sizes and shapes and it is almost always made of 100% cow milk.
So where's the best place to eat all of this?
@@staysweden i think if you go to Krakow, and then Zakopane it will be the easiest way to eat all of this. And i mentioned Zakopane mostly because of Oscypek.

An interesting fact about the man playing the trumpet on the tower. Of course, this is not the only person, there are several bugle callers and they can only be firefighters. Two of them are on duty during 24 hours. To become such a bugle caller, you have to pass a difficult fitness test.
Trumpeters play bugle call to the four corners of the world: for the king, for the mayor, for guests arriving in Krakow and for the commander of the fire brigade.

I'd live in Australia, once there was a Christmas party in our neighborhood, organizer of that event ask participants to bring their national dishes, we brought among another things a dish called in Poland mizeria, basically a very thin sliced cucumber in cream with dash of vinegar and some pepper and salt it was a hit no one have tested it before.
It's funny you mention that salad. Ambers family also makes a similar salad. The only difference is they also add dill. Delicious either way!
@@SOSASATSUNRISE I've tried to find out why this salad has the name which has nothing to do with misery, and I managed to find the root of the matter, apparently the salad originated in today's Italy, in 15th century a princess from one of Italy cities was married to a Polish aristocrat, and every time that salad was served she cried as the salad reminded her hometown, as you know prior to Columbus discovery pepper and other spices were very expensive even now that salad is a perfect addition to a meat dish

Nice food tour in Kraków , my home for the past 11 years. At some places in Kraków they do serve fried pierogi. They boil, then fry them. The milk bar you went to is not my favorite. I went to Kuchnia u Doroty. Their potato pancakes and goulash are very tasty! I cannot stand herring, no matter how much vidka I drink with it.😄 But that pork knuckle looked fabulous! Next time you are in Kraków go to the Judah Food Truck area in Kazimierz. Lots of really great options there.

Krakow is so awesome! We got the pork knuckle at Sledz U Fryzjera in Old Town. The knuckle was a surprise for both of us and the second best thing we ate that day. Have so much fun!!
Pierogi can be either fried or boiled, it's a preference thing. Great video!
The pierogi are always boiled. Frying is a way to reheat them. Then they change their taste and some people prefer the fried ones.
Also, me and my wife did baked pierogi for Christmas. Filling consisted of sauerkraut, mushrooms and fish. Really good recipe.

Kuchnia u Doroty is very very amazing...went in summer and went back the next night.....going back in april and have purposely booked a hotel around the corner so i can eat almost every night there,,,,can hardly wait...yummy yummy

Sorry to improve, but Hungarian goulash is a soup. In the case of potato pancakes you ate, it's just a meat stew that has nothing to do with Hungary. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I hope you had a good trip 😉

The food in Poland is worth visiting for! Temps in Poland never get too hot in our opinion but are cold in the winter. Summer is a great time to visit. This video was filmed at the end of July.

Oh Amber we only sip vodka in restaurants and very rarely, normally you shot it specially on parties and barbecues. Loved finally watching you enjoying Poland but please never call zapiekanka a pizza as this is as offensive as pineapple on pizza to Italians 😂😂 Also golabki are also my favourite food.. unbeatable😬Stay safe on your travels 😊

Barszcz z uszkami is served rather at home for christmas EVE. A regular barszcz is simple a Red beet soup with potatos and carrots, sometimes with Bean.
What you mean at christmas eve? Like only xmas eve? If yes, than I have christmas every month. The only difference is that christmas eve barszcz z uszkami is cooked on vegetables only w/o meat as we do not eat red meat at christmas eve.

That may depend where are you from but for me, typical redbeet soup can be eaten everyday.
So when you have a dish you should talk about the accoutrements what was on the plate with the pork knuckle what was in the little cup.

We have not spent a lot of time exploring Warsaw. I am sure you can still find all the great polish food but Krakow just hits different for us. Amazing food, big old town and jewish quarter, the castle and Krakow is located closer to so many other cities in eastern Europe that are easy to travel to by train. We would love to explore many more polish cities. Thanks for watching!

The tradition of Bar Mleczny has little to do with communism. They have existed for many years. A bar mleczny (literally translated as "milk bar" from Polish) is a Polish cafeteria. The first milk bar, called "Mleczarnia Nadświdrzańska," was established in 1896 in Warsaw by Stanisław Dłużewski, a member of the Polish landed gentry. Although the typical bar mleczny had a menu based on dairy items, these establishments generally also served other, non-dairy traditional Polish dishes as well. The commercial success of the first milk bars encouraged other businessmen to copy this type of restaurant. As Poland regained its independence after World War I, milk bars appeared across most of the country. They offered relatively cheap but nourishing food, and thus achieved even more prominence during the economic depression of the 1930s and World War II. After the fall of the Nazi regime, Poland became a communist state in the Eastern Bloc. Contrary to official propaganda, the majority of the population was poor, and even moderately-priced restaurants were derided as "capitalist". During the post-war years, most restaurants were nationalized and then closed down by the communist authorities. In the mid-1960s, milk bars were common as a means of offering cheap meals to people working in companies that had no official canteen. The traditional Hungarian goulash is soup. A meat stew is called a goulash in Poland. Potato pancakes with Polish goulash have nothing to do with Hungary. 😛

14:50 Vodka and herring are the best combination. Why? Because it is in oil, which limits the absorption of alcohol and therefore allows more of it to be absorbed. I guess all Slavic nations know this :D

2:40 polish schabowy is better than german schnitzel - you are really clever. In fact schabowy is a piece of noble pork when german schnitzel is beef full of tendons and cholesterol.

By the way guys when You mentioning the Holocaust, and polish ghettos, please make sure, to mention that it was build by Germans, and that the poles had nothing to do with it, actually we did more than any other country to help.

Nope, we fry perogy but we boil them when we make them. We don't fry pierogi because when we fry raw dough instead boil them pierogi are hard as stone.

Actually some Poles sip while others chug their wodka shots. Poland produces some of the finest vodkas so it’s a shame to just swallow them in one or two gulps.

Herring, onion and oil is traditional paring with Vodka, what are you talking about.
Are you saying this because we thought the pork was better than the herring?
@@SOSASATSUNRISE No, i like pork and almost never eat herring but it almost like cultural monument that salty herring pairs with vodka and some level of oil helps with vodka too. It is like Tequilla + salt + lime. Oil helps to coat the stomach for hard alcohol and salt herring works as tasty salt. There is no instant acidid thing after drinking but we have acitid things during drinking and after in form of soups, sauerkraufts, fermented pickles etc. And look at the Swedes they mix those 3 things together and in for of Summerstelung (or whatever the name is) and i bet it was invented as drinking aid. Then the onion is like a cheap historical spice on all those ingreadients. Helps to cover some bad smells and tastes.

As a Polish person i should say: nobody really tells you that in Milk Bars they are using low quality ingredients? Its not the good way to try our food i think.
Zapiekanki is a street food you get when you're drunk, in the middle of the night and short of money. It's a baked baguette, not pizza.
Pierogi You need to eat with creme fraiche... It's stupid western polish fashion to serve it raw. Pierogi are east Poland speciality. Lublin or Zamość will be good place to try.
Whoever told you we sip on vodka's drink was a fraud.
Sorry but "pierogi" not "pierogis". Pierogi is already in plural form :) One is pieróg. Best regards!
