Also guys, when you visit a Christmas market in southern Germany or parts of Austria make sure to try the "Schupfnudeln mit Sauerkraut und Speck" (wheat- and potato-based noodles that are fried with bacon chunks and sauerkraut). Sounds weird but, seriously, it's the best thing to eat before having your Glühwein. Awesome drunk food, haha. 😅
I was recently in Koln for my first German Christmas Market. It was so awesome and end the end of the night I was so full of mulled wine, brats, pastries, chocolate and Xmas cheer. Highly recommend 👍👍👍
The best part about the fritters are when they are warm and your hands are cold! Eat them while they are warm! They taste sooooo much better. Hard to find the small ones in Berlin, but they are there. Thanks for a great post!
i'm going to germany, with my mom, in a week and a half and we are both so excited lol we used to live there when i was a kid and now to go back with her, as an adult, will be something we will always cherish.
Wir hören uns immer wieder Heino an, obwohl wir Holländisch sind... :P Und jedes jahr fahren wir einmal nach Münster oder Aachen. :P Weihnachtszeit ist die schönste Zeit! :P
@@h.j.b3705 If you're from the Netherlands, Aachen is probably the easiest metropolis to go to. And well, Aachener Printen are available the whole bloody year, so .. no excuse to travel there only around December ;)
That was nice that you included your father. Nice to see family's that travel together and can stand each other long enough to enjoy. Happy Holidays. Love your posts.
Always great to watch your videos, specially about my home country or countries I visited already and can compare your experience with mine. Cheers and have a good time
Also, maybe visit a medieval Christmas market! They're almost like the regular kind, but with a medieval touch to them, which makes them even more beautiful! And those markets have some specialties as well that you wouldn't get at a regular market. 😊
We just left Bamberg Germany yesterday for Prague. We so enjoyed trying all these Christmas favorites in the cities we visited. Today we started on Prague’s traditional Christmas festival food. 😂 Your vlogs are so helpful as we spend the winter months in Europe every year. Thank you.
Hey Wolter, just found you, because of the name coincidence 😂 I am in love with your videos and really happy that you like the German Christmas markets, because I am from Germany. Right now I am living in Barcelona, Spain and missing all this food from the German Christmas markets 😍 I hope you enjoyed 😍
We did enjoy it :) Thank's Nessi :) I lived in Germany for a number of years and it just has a very special place in my heart, especially at Christmas time. Have some Cava for me in Barca :)
Just don't be disappointed when there is no Schmalzkuchen - I live in Baden-Württemberg and I don't think I ever saw some at the christmas markets here.
We’ve been in Germany in the weeks before Christmas for the last two years, and I’m SO going to miss it this year! The Christmas markets always get me in the Christmas spirit. The Nurnberg one is my favorite. I have a glühwein mug collection, too! PS- if you’re in Rothenberg ob der Tauber, be sure to try the sneeballen!
I really want to go there! Your enthusiasm is so lovely! Its so nice to be able to at least see these places and things, even though I havent made it there yet. Your channel is the best!
Two important "christmas metropoli" I'm missing here: - Nuremberg - Elisenlebkuchen plus the beer (Franconia to the rescue!) and of corpse one of the most touristy christmas market evarrr! - Aachen! - how one can miss out on Aachen, the most western metropolis in Germany, which ALSO got Lebkuchen (Aachener Printen) ALL the year, not just on christmas .. irritating. @Wolter: You seem to be coming next to never to Northrhine-Westphalia - reasons? excuses? ;)
I would love to try the mulled wine! The little cookie as well. I had roasted chestnuts when I was in Italy last year! I would love to go to Germany! Love you’re videos!
The Glühwein is quite easy to make at home: 1 liter (~34 fl. oz.) dry red wine 2 untreated oranges in slices Juice of 2 more oranges 7 cloves 2 cinnamon sticks 1 star anise 50g (1.8 oz) brown sugar or to taste 50ml (1.7 fl. oz.) brown rum (if you like) Add all but the last two ingredients into a pot. Set the stove on low to heat it up and make sure it doesn't boil. At the end add the sugar and if you like also rum. In Germany you will get both versions, with and without rum. We normally say "mit Schuss" ("with [a] shot") if we want rum in it.
Was in Dusseldorf yesterday. Had my first gluhwein in the Christmas markets but nobody here said that it's spiced. "It's just hot wine" they said. In cologne right now and will ask around. Any insight into why they say it's not spiced would be great. Thanks!
@@woltersworld someone selling gluhwein and mulled cider said that all gluhwein has some spices and sweetener in it. And he wrote a name of the spice to buy from store to make our own. We tried it at home with orange slices. Oh well, but then that's koln :))

I guess Christmas markets are most traditional in german spoken countries like Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Not in hole Europe. Many european neighbours come to Germany because of visiting these markets for the first time.
The christmas market here in Frankfurt is super popular with tourists. I only ever go there on weekdays in the morning when less people are around so that I actually have a chance to walk through the whole market in peace instead of being squashed. lol
now we understand what happened to skinny Mark. 🤔 but seriously, i was at the Stuttgart Christmas market 3 years ago but sadly could eat any of the food, having a very bad flu at the time and couldn't keep anything down. my loss.
What you could do if you want to feel the German Christmas mood is to go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. They have a couple of shops offering Christmas-themed decoration all year round. Been there once and found it quite weird and funny to see all that Christmas stuff during summer, too.
Your dad is sweet! Love when you include your family. 🎄
Me too! This is very beautiful!

I could eat entire pots of Sauerkraut und Speck. And especially if they have a bit of sour cream on the side. Yummy!

Feuerwurst - hot version of Rotwurst. Also the most favorite of all children - fruits in chocolate and Crepes.
We went to the Christmas market in Stuttgart Germany when we lived there. The Gluewein is really good.

I feel so lucky to be able to go to one of these every day if I wish to :D
Is it possible to keep the same mug and have it refilled at the same vendor? Thank you.
Yep, thats the way you do it!!

If you make your own from wine by itself you add spices to it. Hence spiced wine. Or mulled wine.

Well poor countries have nothing to offer or show
Merry Christmas Wolter family!

Is there some typical German veggie food? Thanks :)
The Heart-shaped Gingerbread is actually not meant to be eaten, but as decoration.

Heading over to Frankfurt and Aachen in 10 days. Can't wait for the markets!
Thank you for this guide :) I'm planning a trip to Berlin right now, so it will come in handy :) I'm wondering, can you pay by card or do you have to bring cash with you to Christmas markets?
Greetings from Poland! ❤
Cash is king at the Christmas market. Occasionally you will see card options but i would not count on it
Better bring cash
strongly recommend bringing cash...
St Christmas market cash only.
Extra hint: best choice are coins (50 cent, 1 €, 2€) not bills. And when bills only the small ones ( 5 or 10 €).
