This is a VERY long video which is 99% negative. That's because there's simply nothing to elaborate on with the positives. Individual scenes are funny. Kamala Khan is super charming. But there's nothing to elaborate on.
Everything else....there's a lot to unpack. And the frustrating thing, I suspect Nia DaCosta turned in a script and set out to make a better film. There are deep ideas buried in the film. But they're completely lost in how the final film tells it's story, when information is revealed and a 1000 silly jokes.
In the video I try to propose how to fix big aspects of the film. There's time codes to skip to my PITCH ideas.

I find it interesting that another comic book movie that came out this year and was rated PG (Across the Spider-Verse) was able to address its darker topics and not feel like it had to have a joke or action in every scene and knew when it needed to be serious and knew when it needed to be funny, showing that a comedy can have weight. You can't say the same with The Marvels (ad other recent MCU projects like Thor: Love and Thunder) because whenever it needed to be serious it tried to be funny and whenever it needed to be funny it tried to be funny. Finally, I would like to note that every single good comedy knows that not every single line can be a joke because there's nothing wrong with jokes or comedy but if every scene is a joke you can't have any weight.

If you think about it, there is SOME reason for Monica’s sacrifice. She held some resentment towards Carol for sacrificing time with her for the greater good of everyone, and in the end she has to make the same kind of choice. The only thing is they only really talk about this once.
My issue is that’s no different than how Star-Lord going to see his grandfather felt for me in GOTG3 and everyone seemed to love that decision for some reason.

We know that Peter has been ignoring Earth because he has negative feelings about it and it brings back bad memories. He ignored his grandfather for this reason. And its much better than explored in Got 3 that this.
How are they the same at all

    • @evan9902
      @evan9902 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrMgkman13I feel like it’s because GOTG sets up that decision for Star-Lord better. It was setup since the opening of the first movie and for the entire trilogy Star-Lord was trying to ring his family and hold onto what he has. Heck, it’s why he got so upset when he lost Gamora as he felt he lost the last of his family. He forgets about his grandfather as he thinks he’s a jerk but really he’s afraid to face his last which is why he wanted to find a new family outside of earth so bad. The point is it was setup a lot better in GOTG because The Marvels touched on the idea but there was so much going on in the movie that it never got time to breathe or feel fleshed out which is why it worked in GOTG but not in the Marvels.

My brother shared a story where in High School, he and his marching bandmates went to watch the Marvels in theatres with their instructors. None of them took this movie seriously. The whole time, he and his friends were making fun of the movie. The part I remember from the story the most is in the scene where Monica sacrifices herself to save the universe, his friend starts laughing and clapping, then he and the other friends start clapping, and then everyone in the band started clapping in the theatre during the scene because they were all sick of this movie.

People don't understand that you can enjoy something, but still realize that it's not good, or heavily flawed. I enjoy the SW prequel movies, but I would never argue with someone that they're good movies. Fanbases suffer from so much toxicity that it's become nauseating. Either people hate just to hate, or they plug their ears and go "la, la, la, everything is fine". Then crucify you for pointing out valid flaws. Meanwhile, people are in the middle are like "sure it's fun, but it needs to improve drastically." Like it or not, this movie is NOT what Marvel needed right now. It needed a huge win, and it didn't deliver. Great video.

To add onto your pitch. I love it man that would have been a perfect intro to the movie. Showing the apocalypse of hala is hands down the obvious choice to go. It blows my mind that they chose to not do that and instead put it in the middle of the movie. While watching that scene I remember thinking “ohh that’s why she’s mad, damn if I knew that I probably would have enjoyed the first half of the movie more” so I agree with you 100%. Now imagine they show the apocalypse and as everybody is running away trying to find shelter we see a woman with horns just standing there watching the chaos and right before the scene ends we see a time door open, the woman walks through it and it closes then marvel logo shows up. It can just be in a corner of the screen it doesn’t have to be focused on just a cool Easter egg showing sylvie pre Loki surviving in apocalypses! No explanation nothing never even gets brought up. So if you know you know and if you don’t you probably won’t even notice it. That would be so freaking cool.
Edit. They should add sylvie into every apocalyptic scenario in the mcu from here on out. Like the new Stan Lee

I liked some parts of the movie but one thing that bugged me the most I have to say was the inconsistency or when the character swaps happened when 1 of the 3 used powers. The story has some problems but I just didn't find most of them as frustrating as you and other critics. I enjoyed the cast, I feel they controlled the commentary better than the first movie (their dynamic was about them as heroes and people, not women), there were some great looking shots, and the humor at least felt like it had personality in the franchise. I really like the three main actresses and the characters that they play and I felt that the movie itself didn't do them any justice and if anything, we're not going to see much more of these characters moving forward due to this movie's box office failure. For me, I feel that every great movie has an emotional core. Essentially, what is the movie about emotionally and/or thematically. Iron Man is about a man coming to terms that creating weapons for war mongers doesn't make the world a safer place. Jurassic Park is about the consequences of meddling with nature, and about a reluctant father who learns the emotional value of having children. Jaws is about capitalism and the consequences of being complacent from or tentative in doing the right thing.
And the thing with emotional cores is that they are like the story's fertilizer, where everything sprouts from it. This movie, however, has just a few moments where the core is relevant and the rest is just fun set-pieces and gags.
A movie that ignores its emotional core is likely doomed to mediocrity. This movie's emotional core is nebulous. You have Carol's guilt and complicity in an unintended genocide, you have a fan girl you meets her hero, and you have a family member who feels like they've been neglected. Not only do these emotional cores eat at one another but they don't give them proper time to develop them and make them connect organically. This movie is a mess and what's disappointing, as you've mentioned, there really is an interesting story here.
    Great review.

Movie was actually good ngl I was so incredibly shocked I'm actually thinking I like it quite a fair bit. Everyone went in with a preset judgement based on whatever their favourite TH-cam said. And whilst I fell victim to that it was genuinely not bad at all not to mention the Kate Bishop scene! VERY HYPED!

The thing about this movie is that it just feels like a season finale to a tv show rather than its own complete film. That’s what all these movies feel like now. They feel cheaper and looser, like long episodes than actual movies. Say what you want about Iron Man 3 or Age of Ultrok but they felt like their own complete movies. You guys know what I’m talking about? Watching this movie felt like the season finale to a show I haven’t seen. It’s fun, sure, but the emotional investment isn’t there.

I liked this one better than most, ditto for IRON MAN 2. I think they're only messy if you are expecting them to be something they're not.
Thor 2, IRON MAN 2+3, Thor 4, Ant-Man & The Wasp, etc... I call those kinds of stories, "A day in the life" stories. They may not have linear storylines, but they tend to have linear character growth or a cohesive thematic statement being made.

This may be a weird example abut the 'science' behind something, but I read a book (for teens but who cares) that's basically about a parallel universe that has similar stories to ours. One of them was like Elijah (If you know you know) and when it didn't rain for three years. In the book time stood still. So they had a whole explanation of what they've done for food. Basically the've made fake or synthetic things. And they're worried because they need hay or something for their horses. They gave a reasonable explanation for something. And it's a fantasy. Clearly this isn't possible. But they still gave an explanation so it's somewhat believable. Anyway.....great review

Finally got to see it last night and I really enjoyed it. As I'm watching it I'm wondering if some critics watched a different movie, though I understand it was watched through a different lense that mine. I'm a positive pete, I like to enjoy things and be entertained.
The biggest things I've heard from people that didn't enjoy it was the two scenes that completely took them out of it. My take on the first scene in question was I loved how they showed us a new planet with a totally different culture and way of comminicating. How many times have people complained about Star Wars going to dessert planets, yet here they show something new and its hated on? Murrell and Campea - my two favorite TH-camrs after Sean - bith made it seem like the singing went on for an hour when it was over and done in under two minutes?
The second scene with the cats was hilarious, and the fact that they played Memories (from Cats) put it over the top for me.
A lot of hate is thrown towars Dar-Benn but i thought while she lacked the charisma of a Thanos or Killmonger her motives were aligned with theirs. She has a personal vendetta with our hero. She blames , and maybe rightfully so, but at least justifiably in her mind Carol for destroying her peoples way of life. She is trying to do what is best for her people and their survival.
Finally I heard a complaint about Dar-benn using the staff like it had fhe Power Stone in it. It was the power of the bangle, wnd that I thought was brutally clear by the fact that she had to place the bangle against it for it to work.
I seriously had a smile on my face the entire time and as much as I loved the Beast and Binary reveals, I marked out so hard over the Kate Bishop reveal and even more when I realized Kamala was doing the Nick Fury bit.
I completely appreciate that art is subjective and not for everyone. I promise I'm not hating on anyone who didn't like it if they were going in hoping to do so and were disappointed.
Peace, love and movies all, have an awesome weekend!

It’s tough when a director has the reins taken from them so the parliament can make a crowd pleaser, but what are you gonna do?
They gave Chloe Zhao the reins for Eternals and it didn’t work out. You can see hints in that movie that they wanted to do big things in the future with the Eternals, but Chloe Zhao’s input pretty much killed those plans.
If they had taken control of Eternals, I’m sure it would please crowds and they could’ve kept those big plans open. The drawback would be that they’d have to ignore the growing number of fans who have scorn for them because of their tendency to take movies away from their directors. They chose to respect the fans and now the movie stands out like a sore, awkward thumb.
The Marvels is too big / connects to too many things for Marvel to risk that happening again. They’re trying their best, but each chance mistake is so detrimental when you’re trying to do a big cinematic universe that it’s really hard to take risks. Hitting on them is great, but losing has huge ripple effects.
Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge gamble for Marvel. It payed off, but imagine if it didn’t. Imagine how different the story of Infinity War would be if you couldn’t put the Guardians in there because nobody cared about them, which is something I would’ve bet on in 2013. I think that’s what we saw with Eternals, and I think that’s why parliament thought it was necessary for The Marvels to be reworked into a crowd pleaser.

Just saw the film. I like most of your critiques with the story Sean, but I wouldn’t call it genocide. Maybe I’m quipping over details, but the negative implications of calling someone genocidal make me not wanna use it when mass murder wasn’t her intention. The reality of war in our world is sometimes civilians die, and it should never be the goal, but when you have to deal with evil governments and very evil people, it happens from time to time, and Carol certainly intend it. If all that is true about our world, it’s doubly true for a world where everyone is super powered and able to do crazy things. The kree are horrible people and we should be rooting for captain marvel to defeat them. It’s sad this defeat caused undue damage, but superhero movies can desensitize us to the reality: you can’t always just kill the evil, superpowered leader and no damage come to the people. It just doesn’t work that way. In Carol’s shoes, I would have made the choice to destroy the supreme intelligence too she didn’t know better, and I think it was right, and I wouldn’t feel too bad about the consequences cause sometimes people lose wars.

While I think the ending of Haliee Steinfeld's cameo & Iman Vellani copying Nick Fury from the 1st Iron Man is cute, it also feels at the same time that Marvel is just mocking itself from the beginning of their last saga. It feels like they know Iman is a huge fan of the MCU and just wrote that in partially for Iman to just copy Nick Fury's style and lines to set up the YA (Young Avengers) storyline. I feel Marvel just recycled their ending of the 1st Iron Man movie for this movie's ending.

This movie was fun, the stakes were exciting, all 3 protagonists stories advanced and it set up future events. Everything we complained about Carol Danvers was fixed in this movie and you still bash her. Nobody cares about Darr Ben because nobody cares about the skrulls and the kree. I really enjoyed the movie as a whole, as the interactions between Carol, Monica, and Kamala are great, the action is fun, and the pacing is solid, the story is messy, the villain is forgettable, and the humor is hit or miss. There are certain scenes that are ridiculous and I enjoyed them (army of Flerken and music planet scenes). However, it doesn’t hit the highs of other Marvel movies. I only liked this as much as I did because of Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and the post credits scene with Beast. I don’t have a lot to say about it because it’s another enjoyable MCU movie, but could have been better and more special!

I do agree. It’s not because there’s women in the lead at all. And a lot of the people criticising it are criticising the confusing story, more than anything else. I felt like a movie was missing too, as they kept on referring to past events but I wanted to actually see that. And I was a bit lost during the second act, when they started exploring different planets. That singing Planet was too long of a gag. Also, it didn’t make sense for Valkyrie to be part of it, other than giving the Kree a new home. Guessing that’s set up for Thor 5 but I don’t understand why the Kree are being transported to New Asgard. A lot of things did not make sense in this movie, as they tried to do a lot of different things in a short amount of time and the editing also is terrible in this movie. It did feel like it was rushing to the end scene and mid-credits scene. I stayed through the whole credits but it was only a sound at the end.
