I love it when you guys disagree. Not only do you do so in such an articulate and entertaining way, you don't do it with the normal vitriol that you see so commonly among other online critics.
Actually turns out the disconnect between this and Secret Invasion is that this was originally meant to be released BEFORE the Secret Invasion show. It explains the personality difference between Nick Fury here and Secret Invasion. Im curious if they will just establish that this takes place before the show because it doesn’t contradict that possible watch order? It also makes more sense for the urgency of more Skrull refugees on Earth after that one planet colonized by the Skrull Emperor was destroyed.
Thanks you guys. The writers of Dr. Strange 2 were unaware of Wandavision which was the exact same story ! Sam Raimi - the Auteur - filled it with a lot of fun eye candy ! Marvel has forgotten what made the 60's 70's comics so great. Story.
I really want to add: This new villian lady was horribly cast. The MCU went from Cate Blanchett hamming it up and being villanous to this lady and her weird hairpiece and weird teeth and that comical hammer. She was the worst part of a horrible movie. I shouldnt be surprised tho. They had Christian Bale and wasted him in Thor. + Add: so.... the re: the kree world (?) - I just thought "These people who are suffering are all really well dressed and they've got dewey skin and nice makeup". It was almost comical.
Thor the Dark World isn’t at the bottom of my MCU list (never was) but after the last few disappointments, mine are: Quantumania, Thor Love & Thunder, Dr Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Ant-Man 2 & Ironman 3. I’d rather rewatch the Marvels than Quantumania. I wasn’t bothered with Carol Danver’s hair either 😅
I can't agree with Christie that the film looks terrible, I had no problem with the effects or presentation at all. This movie falls down completely because of the writing, felt like they wrote the entire film while shooting it. Hundreds of millions spent and you can't even write a decent story. But this is not the worst, eternals/Quantumania/love and thunder/antman 2 are way worse.
I'm one of the few people who knows nothing about the Marvel Universe, but I enjoyed the discussion. I never make an attempt to see any of them because as Christy points out, you have to do a lot of homework just to watch one film. I know other people who feel the same way and don't watch the films as a result. Although, I might fast forward it when it comes on streaming just to see the hair continuity problems Christy references.
You really don’t need to do any homework, I honestly disagree with that assessment. Every film makes sure you can watch it on its own without background research. That is a misnomer that has only grown over the years. Watching other stuff merely gives you a better understanding of the universe but it’s never necessary to understand these things.
Christie and Alonso are both right. I did enjoy my time like Alonso, mostly because of the acting of Vellani, Larson and the Khan family. But every criticism by Christie is true. Still enjoyed it better than Eternals and Quantum. Story was a mess, Marvel's CGI has dropped to DC level...where did all that money go????
@@BreakfastAllDay - in the end I was split. I'd probably give it a four - not as high as Alonso or as low as Christy, but I certainly didn't think it was great.
I was very interested in the B.A.D. review because I've read a lot of blatantly sexist commentary about Captain Marvel online and it's poisoned my regard for critics of the movie. Especially since the criticism of Captain Marvel is often couched in 'objective' terminology, but you can see generally see the angry sexism roiling beneath the surface (lookin' at you, Critical Drinker). I'm also dubious of fanboy reviews and commentary, because well, fanboys are not objective. Christy's no sexist, but Alonzo is a bit of a fanboy though not a total one. Based on their review and the images I've seen in the trailers (the special effects in the trailers look fine to me, good SF comic book imagery) I think I'll find it entertaining but not engrossing. It'll be good to watch when it's streaming for free on DisneyPlus, I think.
I fully agree with Alonso's opinion, but completely understand Christy's opinions as well. My family, friends and the theater we watched the movie in had a good time with it. Far from a perfect movie, it's fundamentally flawed, BUT like Alonso said, there was enough smiles and laughs and charm that I left the theater feeling good. And the last scene was great, and a mid credit scene hadn't shocked me like that one did in a long time. Great review!
Not surprised by this review of Christy as usual to the point. Alonso liking this is what's a massive surprise, i mean its flabbergasting how he likes this movie.
I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. And despite what Christy wrote in her print review, you do not need to have seen _Secret Invasion_ before this. There is zero connective tissue between that debacle and this delightful confection.
I liked this movie, actually I enjoyed this movie. Is it perfect? No. Does it have some script problems (and in editing)? Yes. Is it the worst of the latest MCU (or the MCU in general)? No, but it is also not the greatest. It's just fine. 🤷 I still think that MoM, Quantumania and Love and Thunder were weaker movies... But yes, Christy does have a really good point that Marvel really needs to figure out what their future in storytelling is gonna be (not only movies and TV and content)... I think Marvel just reached the goal they were aiming for and then just went: "soooo... what now?"
I personally love Eternals, even though I admit the movie was a bit of a mess. I think the difference between the failure of Eternals and the failure of the Marvels is that Eternals felt like a situation where Marvel/Chloe Zhao shot for the moon and missed, whereas The Marvels feels like Marvel Studios just got lazy. The Eternals was ambitious in a way movies like The Marvels, Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania were not.
Yay, glad to see other Eternals fans out there. I'm glad it pushed the envelope and it at least had Chloe Zhao's fingerprints all over it. It was a soulful film about humanity that I vibed with. I usually agree more w Alonso's reviews but appreciate Christy's honesty and perspective here. I may go check this out just to support theaters after the strikes.
Agree Eternals “failed” or not as good because it was too ambitious. I just think it had too many characters and there wasn’t any single character I became attached to by the end of the movie. It would be better if it had a POV whether from Ikaris or Sprite - kind of like Rorschach in the Watchmen - he is not a likable character but you understand his views; that might be a better movie. I guess the movie tried to be from Sersi’s view, but she was very bland and cold besides being pretty. But even with the flaws, I did not hate the movie. But in this movie, I had fun and found Ms Marvel and family delightful even if it is very formulaic and aiming a low bar. Neither movies are the best of MCU, but I don’t hate them. There are parts of most movies I’ve enjoyed.
As someone who is educated about the Captain Marvel/Original Ms. Marvel character from the comic books, it seems like the filmmakers do not understand this character at all. Thanks, guys. You are among the most sincere critics out there.
The question is, is really the filmmakers fault when Marvel Studio seems in complete control and their just the hired help. They must get everything done on Marvel Studio's timetable and have it done how they want it. This is why you are seeing more and more flaws in the movies.
@@stephennootens916 Agreed. When I say the filmmakers, I meant it as a general term. That includes the people who made the film as well as the studio itself. Ultimately, it is the studio that’s most to blame because they have the final say. Kinda like a football head coach. As the for the Captain Marvel character, in the comic books she was fascinating. One of the most powerful beings in the universe and her weakness is an identity crisis. You could do so much with that.
@@langleymneely I was taking about the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel. She was definitely not comic book accurate in the first Captain Marvel movie. Not even close. I haven’t seen The Marvels. But if Nia is a huge Marvel fan, that is very cool.
@@docsamson198 in that case I completely agree with you! The first film and her characterization was hampered by the whole gaslit amnesia plot. In this she actually gets to display more of Carols personality and quirks.
Saw the film in IMAX. As someone who liked Captain Marvel I didn’t have low expectations for the sequel, but I did wonder if the negative gossip was legitimate or just the same old Captain Marvel/Brie Larson hate. I enjoyed it, despite not having seen the Ms Marvel show (or any of the Marvel shows). It wasn’t trying to be anything other than a fun and concise superhero movie (but with more cats!) 7/10
Reshoots aren’t working for Marvel. The upcoming Captain America movie is also now getting reshoots. I wouldn’t mind seeing the long version of the movie just out of morbid fascination to see how much worse the movie could have been.
Hey, Christie and Alonso! While there are several factors contributing to the overall disinterest in this film, there is one factor impacting its fate more than the rest: Brie Larson both as the character and as herself outside of the film. CAROL AND BRIE'S LEGACY "Captain Marvel" was Marvel's first major misstep and its impact has rippled across Phases 4 and 5. Detractors were accused of being misogynists but there was a laundry list of problems with that film. -- utter disregard of the source material save for two surface details: memory loss and Air Force background -- supercharging a B-level character into the MCU's invulnerable Superman analog without the attendant kryptonite or Clark Kent persona -- shifting the spotlight from the original male Mar-Vell, one of Marvel's sacred cows who FAMOUSLY died and never returned like Uncle Ben -- gender-bending Mar-Vell because a capable male mentor was unacceptable to the narrative -- missed opportunity of glossing over the LANDMARK Kree-Skrull War in what could have been an epic space opera -- making the Skrulls, one of Marvel's staple villains, into GOOD GUYS; this later impacted "Secret Invasion" -- making ruthless, uber-paranoid, hard-nosed, foul-mouthed super-spy Nick Fury into a cat-cuddling, doo-wop-singing clown -- the secret of Fury's eye revealed to be a cat scratch rather than Skrull duplicity ("The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." -- Captain America: The Winter Soldier) -- the rendering of the Kree Supreme Intelligence as a silvery virtual space rather than a protoplasmic blob like a Spacing Guild navigator from David Lynch's "Dune" -- ret-conning the MCU to position Carol as more significant than the characters whose exploits audiences had spent a decade investing in -- criminally wasting both Jude Law and Annette Bening -- providing no character flaws to Carol Danvers unlike all the other MCU heroes because it was unacceptable to the narrative -- a toxically woke narrative that nerfs or vilifies all the male characters for the benefit of a flawless, omnipotent female character who has been subjugated by the patriarchy -- Brie Larson's unsympathetic, colorless, bland portrayal demonstrating little remorse over her treatment of the Skrulls and no reluctance in attacking her Kree teammates -- Brie Larson's antagonistic public remarks accusing the male fanbase of misogyny when they had wholeheartedly embraced Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Gamora and Wonder Woman COMIC HIJINKS The body-swapping might be "Freaky Friday"-tropey but it is probably the only AUTHENTIC comic adaptation in this new movie because sidekick Rick Jones used to swap places with Mar-Vell whenever their Nega-Band bracelets were tapped together. Rick Jones was the teen sidekick to Cap, Hulk and Mar-Vell. The comic cognoscenti recognize this even if the nooblers do not. With a different set of popular characters, not even the noobs would care. The goofiness of too-much inappropriate humor at the expense of character and drama has plagued Marvel since "Guardians of the Galaxy" and was cranked up to an '11' by Taika Waititi. The trailers promise more of the same. This is definitely a factor but with a different set of characters, people would be more tolerant unless it overwhelmed the production and radically altered a character's persona as in "Thor: Love and Thunder". SEXISM There are Eric Cartman of "South Park" rabid M-She-U trolls out there but most men champion strong women when the characters are organic and truthful. Men as well as women were vocal about a Black Widow movie since her introduction in "Iron Man 2". That's the film that should have been shoehorned between "Infinity War" and "Endgame". Beloved strong female protagonists in sci-fi date back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris in "A Princess of Mars"! "Ahsoka" had three female leads and the Star Wars fanbase was stoked to see them until the show itself left many unfulfilled. This movie's failure will not be due to sexism. CHARACTER UNFAMILIARITY Most everybody who saw the movies saw "WandaVision" as it was first out of the gate during lockdown so Monica Rambeau aka Spectrum is familiar but underdeveloped. She lacks a hook to generate much interest especially since her command of the electromagnetic spectrum was not well-defined. Most people skipped "Ms. Marvel" but were aware of it which is why they passed as it seemed directed at tweeners. Iman Vellani was egregiously miscast but generates enough good will that she would ordinarily be likable. However, since Kamala absolutely adores the MCU's most baggage-laden hero, it automatically makes her unlikable by association! Changing her power set from enlarged elasticity to photokinesis and her origin story from Inhuman to mutant also felt like more disregard of the source material. The show nailed the Muslim cultural comedy and fun family dynamics from the comics, though. Comic cognoscenti know who these people are but don't care enough due to how they've been portrayed. MCU devotees also know the score and would probably be less concerned about authenticity. Nooblers would probably be brought up to speed quickly by the movie but, yes, lack of familiarity is a contributing factor. Conclusion: Goofiness -- not a significant factor unless excessive Sexism -- a miniscule factor Deviation from the Source -- a minor factor for some, a contributing factor for others Unknown Characters -- a contributing factor "Captain Marvel" Domino Effect -- a significant factor Brie Larson -- a monumental factor! The first "Captain Marvel" owes its success largely to being sandwiched between the two finale movies when MCU popularity was at its zenith and everyone felt it was mandatory to watch it lest they not understand a crucial piece of the saga's climax. In the end, it was a trick because she was barely in "Endgame".
After the last Ant-Man, I was afraid I was going to spend my time glancing at my watch. I was pleasantly surprised that I found it mildly entertaining. I especially appreciated the the performances of the leads, especially Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. She is a delight.
Hmmm, I don't know whether to see this one. I've always liked Brie Larsen as Captain Marvel, and I like Iman Vellani a lot too. Post pandemic I've been WAY more choosy about whixch movies I see now. I used to basically just go to everything. Not anymore. I think the pandemic just broke up that decades long pattern, and I just don't automatically see two movies every single weekend anymore. Decisions, decisions... I think I might just go see "Dream Scenario".
@@BreakfastAllDayPlease go see Dream Scenario and do a review so I know if it is any good… 😂😂😂. Nicolas Cage is doing so many smaller movies no one is reviewing…. hahaha…. In the last 2 or 3 years, he has 5 or 6 movies out. He’s the next Eric Roberts… 😂😂😂
So funny to hear reference to Thor: Ragnorok, because that’s a movie without any sort of narrative engine and some of the worst background effects in the MCU. There are dialogue scenes shot in that that looks like Thor and Hulk stepped into a 2008 video game. But I guess the writing and humor for most folx is enuff to look past the questionable effects and environments. But it is funny to hear The Marvels dinged for effects, but not that. Either way, great review guys!
I'm more on Alonso's side on this. I have yet to see this, but if it's okay, then I'd let all the bad stuff slide. I mean, I got A LOT of the Ms Marvel stuff from XMen comics, especially since Rogue killed her, and for over 20 years, she was the iconic visual for a generation of kids.
My low bar for Marvel movies are Iron Man 2 and 3. They're just painful to watch. It's so confusing that everyone only loves Tony Stark so much regardless.
Basically Marvel has spread themselves way too thin w/ characters we just don't care about. The fringe characters are way better when popping up in main character movies.
some people completly disregard what they would normally give a bad review to a movie for this one for some reason... they normally pick apart movies for the slightest or smallest details and again for some reason disregard and fall back on 'i had some fun'. Why this movie? is it to go against the 'fan boys'? is it because is 3 female lead in a superhero movie which normally led by men? is it because is a Black female director.? Very serious reviewer like christie and Dan murrel for example, are giving very detailed technical reasons why the movie 'objectively' not good. now as a critic or reviewer and not a 'fan boy' wouldn't at least see these technical issue and put more weight on those? not hate, just find it strange the either you hate it or luv it.. there is no middle ground on this even with people who's job it is to be objective.
I just think people realize it is hard to do a great movie. To compare every movie to peak MCU movie is a doom mission. It doesn’t help they are making 3 or 4 movies and TV shows a year; things are not going to be top tier; things are going to be watered down with gems further apart and more fillers. At this point, the question is “ are you entertained?” even if the movies are flawed. I am okay with that standard. But I’m okay hearing about criticism Christy or Dan Murrell has.
@@brianng8350i get a movie has to entertain. The issue or question still stands, why are critics and reviewers so easily willing to blindly forget about objective flaws in the writing, editing, visuals, tone, etc and still score it fresh or positive under the umbrella of « i had some fun ». People who normally pick appart way better movies over the smallest thing but this time are willing to not take them into account.. i know its not because its marvel cause people have given negative reviews of marvel before so just wondering why this time.
@SpudBro1 I don't think this is true. Even people who like this movie, including myself, will not say this movie is flawless. We just like it enough in spite of the flaws. Remember when you were in grade school? The score you got is the grade you got. But in college, we are introduced to curve grading. You can still get an A even if you got 70 if all your fellow classmates got even lower grades. I think this is what is happening. After a few years of disappointing movies, a mid tier movie might seem like a better movie if all the other movies are similar or worse. The standards have been lowered.
There is nothing "objective" in reviews; all reviews are subjective. There is nothing absolute about any reviews or opinions. It is like what is beautiful or funny. You ask 5 people, and you get 8 opinions. Based on the experience you carry with you, certain scenes will resonate with you more than other people or do nothing for you. Super Mario made a billion, but I thought it was a terribly boring/bland movie because I don't play the games. There is no nostalgia for an otherwise thin plot and just a bunch of product placement and cameo. But talk to kids or teens or young adults, they had a blast. Everything is subjective.
Im watching the movie for free on veterans day at an old theater on an air force base. Still projection on film! Great sound. I'm a veteran too. The experience is totally different. Very communal. I changed my opinion. I love this movie. I love you Christie but I'm with Alonzo on this one.
Their disagreement got me curious, but I'm still not gonna run out at see this. I stopped keeping up with the MCU so long ago that most of it seems like gibberish to me now.
Wow. I agree with Alonzo. This is my first visit to this channel. It’s fun,not perfect. Two scenes really threw it off for me, Worse than Thor 2 or Antman Q…no. A 2? And Hair issues? That’s confusing… The chemistry and Ms Marvel & fam performances were excellent. Cool action at times. We’ve seen one dimensional villains often in Marvel. 6.5 seems right. Interesting credit scenes. It’s ok to have fun. Some people are visibly mad over this film…time to do something else…it’s just a movie.
Oh I'll not be seeing this. It's going to take something quite special for Marvel to get me back in the cinema paying money again. It's a shame because I want to support Big female led blockbusters and I was that guy at midnight screenings for the first 4 phases!
on the casting of the 3 leads: i still think that Yvonne Strahovski would've been a better Carol and Kylie Bunbury a better Monica. Iman Vellani, however...PERFECT as Kamala. I also think Zawe was miscast as the villain. she just looks "too cute" to be this threatening, deadly female Ronan-type villain. Jackson as Fury was fine and consistent with his Fury in Captain Marvel, BUT...he's NOT the same Nick Fury as the one in all the Avengers and Captain America movies. he actually seems pretty dumb and useless in this one. shame. but, overall...i still enjoyed the movie.
Already left my impressions but I was bored and restless and it felt cheap. AND the costumes looked bad and the post credit outfit from the lady looked like a budget halloween outfit. .. Offggh. 2/10 for me. Brie Larson's line delivery (especially that scene at the end of the movie with ms marvel) = CHECKED OUT. Even the training sequence was just "we cant be bothered to film it anywhere so we just shot this whole sequence in the 1 spot in the spaceship". The whole thing was so lazy. The final big fight was in a basketball court sized set ... with 4 women duking it out. Why didnt Ms Marvel even bother to try to use her new whip scarf and play to her new skill?
For the first 30 or so minutes The Marvels was an awful mess, possibly the worst movie of the year. In spite of all that, I ended up liking much of the second half of the film. In the end, I agree more with Alonso's take, but I can also see where Christy is coming from
I haven't seen half of the Marvel films by now, but I always feel weird about which ones are discussed as being the worst. Thor Dark World was very bland, but it was by no means as bad as Iron Man 2 even just out of the first couple of phases. Civil War is worse too, though bizarrely people tend to actually like that one.
Civil War is popular because of introduction of Spider-Man and Black Panther and a big cast of Avengers fighting each other. Personally, not a big fan of the story or Zemo after Winter Soldier being one of my top MCU movie.
I loved your review and agree with both, this could have been a good movie, but was so chopped and changed that it feels artificial at times and that still did for a bad movie, really bad movie
I feel so bad for professional film critics like Christy and Alonso who've been reviewing actual movies long before these horrid Marvel cash-grabs started coming out 15 years ago. You shouldn't have to sit through them, let alone offer sincere critiques of this garbage, but I know it's part of the deal, and you're kind of damned if you/damned if you don't review them. Marvel has completely destroyed the movie industry. Sad.
This is so jarring for me as a fan of you guys because I tend to side with Christy on so much but after hearing your out the theatre reaction I expected a train wreck and I absolutely adore this film!? It felt like I watched a different film compared to the reaction of some critics regarding this. Its way better than Quantumania but I also liked Quantumania. I actually enjoy when you guys disagree on films btw! Lol
This is fascinating. I had such a fun time at the movies, it felt like a Phase One MCU movie to me and I thought the trio had great chemistry together, it was witty and hilarious and I was entertained. The Khan family were so much fun threaded in there too. I think I'm definitely where Alonso landed on it, I was having so much fun nothing really bothered me.
@@ryanmathis8286 I think maybe some of her scenes got cut? She had a solid motive I thought -- trying to reclaim what was taken from her homeland, and I liked that Captain Marvel righted that wrong in the end. Reminded me of Killmonger in Black Panther in that what she was doing was right to her, and understandable in the context of what had happened, but went about it in the wrong way.
This movie clearly wasn't great but I can think of a few more that are worse in the MCU and at least one of them came out within the last couple of years. The 1h 45m runtime (inc credits) was a red flag as it was never going to be enough time to do 3 protagonists and a villain justice. This is what happens when you go from 3 projects a year from '17-'19 to a ridiculous 8 a year from '21-'23! Hopefully they stick with pulling back next year with only one movie in Deadpool 3 & one show in Echo.
Criticism is fine, but then using that criticism to make giant sweeping statements about who or what is responsible - when no one really knows and you’re actually just guessing - is a bit silly.
Well we can see the the script is bad. And we can see that the effects are bad. And we can recognize a pattern of increasingly subpar content. So we can conclude that something is seriously wrong at Marvel. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
@@BreakfastAllDay I thought the effects were fine. The script is messy but that’s true of most big budget films these days. To make judgements on those things is fine but, as I say, to then go from those judgments to making sweeping statements as to why those things are the way they are, when unless you work at marvel you don’t know, is silly.

Disagree with Christy. Nowhere near the worst Marvel film. I'd put it above Thor 2 and 4, Ant-Man 3, Black Widow and Incredible Hulk. It gets by a lot on the charm of the cast, and the quirky moments that Alonso highlights. There were a few points of painful ADR though, like no attempt to hide the fact the scene was rewritten when they could only get actors into a recording booth.
@@P.90.603 The hate is because Brie Larson is more a woke feminist activist than an actress. E.g. She dismissed movie reviewers as '40 year old white dudes' because a particular woke move was not appreciated. She needlessly alienated much of the cast of the MCU movies. Captain Marvel was terrible; she was totally miscast. She compromised the MCU and has done so again with 'The Marvels', the movie that just might have destroyed the MCU.
I dug it for the most part. All three of them work so well together. I think my biggest problem with almost every Marvel movie is, the villain is never interesting, so you have to find the rest of it satisfying and I was satisfied, but I do think Marvel needs a re-set.

Yeah, sometimes a bit of silly harmless fun is what we need and I felt like that's the movie they were making.
@@P.90.603 and the needle-drop in that sequence! ICONIC!
Charm is key word here. Ms Marvel and the family are so delightful - bringing humor, heart, and everything to this movie.
Not surprised by this review of Christy as usual to the point.
Alonso liking this is what's a massive surprise, i mean its flabbergasting how he likes this movie.
He usually likes bad movies
I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. And despite what Christy wrote in her print review, you do not need to have seen _Secret Invasion_ before this. There is zero connective tissue between that debacle and this delightful confection.
Hmm, I don't know if that's a pro or a con... but it clearly is very lazy from Marvel.
I think Marvel just reached the goal they were aiming for and then just went: "soooo... what now?"
Or Jeremy irons in reversal of fortune?
Love Eternals. Underrated.
As a comic reader and Captain Marvel/Monica Rambeau fan I completely disagree. Nia DaCosta is a HUGE fan of Marvel and knows her stuff.
I wanna see how Alonso decorates for Christmas 🎅🏼🎄🎅🏼
My friends saw it & had a lot of fun & I think they hated Quantumania. I still have no interest in seeing it. I never really did. ~shrug~
Alonso likes this but not the hunger games 😂.
have not seen ms marvel, I'm sure its good but having to keep track of EVERY show and movie to keep up is just getting to be too much
Hey, Christie and Alonso! While there are several factors contributing to the overall disinterest in this film, there is one factor impacting its fate more than the rest: Brie Larson both as the character and as herself outside of the film.
CAROL AND BRIE'S LEGACY
"Captain Marvel" was Marvel's first major misstep and its impact has rippled across Phases 4 and 5. Detractors were accused of being misogynists but there was a laundry list of problems with that film.
-- utter disregard of the source material save for two surface details: memory loss and Air Force background
-- supercharging a B-level character into the MCU's invulnerable Superman analog without the attendant kryptonite or Clark Kent persona
-- shifting the spotlight from the original male Mar-Vell, one of Marvel's sacred cows who FAMOUSLY died and never returned like Uncle Ben
-- gender-bending Mar-Vell because a capable male mentor was unacceptable to the narrative
-- missed opportunity of glossing over the LANDMARK Kree-Skrull War in what could have been an epic space opera
-- making the Skrulls, one of Marvel's staple villains, into GOOD GUYS; this later impacted "Secret Invasion"
-- making ruthless, uber-paranoid, hard-nosed, foul-mouthed super-spy Nick Fury into a cat-cuddling, doo-wop-singing clown
-- the secret of Fury's eye revealed to be a cat scratch rather than Skrull duplicity ("The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." -- Captain America: The Winter Soldier)
-- the rendering of the Kree Supreme Intelligence as a silvery virtual space rather than a protoplasmic blob like a Spacing Guild navigator from David Lynch's "Dune"
-- ret-conning the MCU to position Carol as more significant than the characters whose exploits audiences had spent a decade investing in
-- criminally wasting both Jude Law and Annette Bening
-- providing no character flaws to Carol Danvers unlike all the other MCU heroes because it was unacceptable to the narrative
-- a toxically woke narrative that nerfs or vilifies all the male characters for the benefit of a flawless, omnipotent female character who has been subjugated by the patriarchy
-- Brie Larson's unsympathetic, colorless, bland portrayal demonstrating little remorse over her treatment of the Skrulls and no reluctance in attacking her Kree teammates
-- Brie Larson's antagonistic public remarks accusing the male fanbase of misogyny when they had wholeheartedly embraced Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Gamora and Wonder Woman
COMIC HIJINKS
The body-swapping might be "Freaky Friday"-tropey but it is probably the only AUTHENTIC comic adaptation in this new movie because sidekick Rick Jones used to swap places with Mar-Vell whenever their Nega-Band bracelets were tapped together.
SEXISM
There are Eric Cartman of "South Park" rabid M-She-U trolls out there but most men champion strong women when the characters are organic and truthful.
CHARACTER UNFAMILIARITY
Most everybody who saw the movies saw "WandaVision" as it was first out of the gate during lockdown so Monica Rambeau aka Spectrum is familiar but underdeveloped.
Conclusion:
Goofiness -- not a significant factor unless excessive
Sexism -- a miniscule factor
Deviation from the Source -- a minor factor for some, a contributing factor for others
Unknown Characters -- a contributing factor
"Captain Marvel" Domino Effect -- a significant factor
Brie Larson -- a monumental factor!
The Incredible Hulk is a good flick… fight me lol
Hmmm, I don't know whether to see this one. I've always liked Brie Larsen as Captain Marvel, and I like Iman Vellani a lot too. Post pandemic I've been WAY more choosy about whixch movies I see now. I used to basically just go to everything. Not anymore. I think the pandemic just broke up that decades long pattern, and I just don't automatically see two movies every single weekend anymore. Decisions, decisions... I think I might just go see "Dream Scenario".
We haven't seen that yet, let us know how it is and whether we should catch up with it!
Go. It’s fun.
And the mid/end credits…
If you like Iman Vellani and family and the whole Ms Marvel TV show, you should enjoy this movie.
@@BreakfastAllDay Will do!
I thought it was a cute movie. Not Marvel at its best, but I had more fun with it than Ant-Man 3
So funny to hear reference to Thor: Ragnorok, because that’s a movie without any sort of narrative engine and some of the worst background effects in the MCU.
I think it was Howard Hawks who said "Three good scenes and no bad ones."
I love it when mom and dad fight. 😉
I'm with Alonso on this. It's flawed but fun. 6/10.
My low bar for Marvel movies are Iron Man 2 and 3. They're just painful to watch. It's so confusing that everyone only loves Tony Stark so much regardless.
the vibe felt like the tom holland spiderman mcu movies
Basically Marvel has spread themselves way too thin w/ characters we just don't care about. The fringe characters are way better when popping up in main character movies.
3:02 WTF, are they cats in the movie? Forget it, i'm out. Fall on your sword MCU.
Alonso liking this knocked us on our backsides. Thanks
some people completly disregard what they would normally give a bad review to a movie for this one for some reason... they normally pick apart movies for the slightest or smallest details and again for some reason disregard and fall back on 'i had some fun'.
100% with Christy on this one. Worst MCU movie by far.
I'm glad I refunded my IMAX Marvels ticket for tonight. Ended watching Wim Wenders' Perfect Days. Kôji Yakusho really needs an Oscar nomination.
What a massive W of a swap.
Is that on limited release? Or you are not in US? Do see this playing.
Kamela doesn't get her powers from the bangle. She's a mutant.
Wow.
I agree with Alonzo.
This is my first visit to this channel.
It’s fun,not perfect.
Two scenes really threw it off for me,
Worse than Thor 2 or Antman Q…no.
A 2? And Hair issues?That’s confusing…
The chemistry and Ms Marvel & fam performances were excellent.
The quote about the three good scenes is from Howard Hawks.
Saddened by Christy's review. WHAT has happened to Marvel? Is it past the point of no return?
Quantity over quality, it's that simple! They went from 3 projects a year from '17-'19 to 8 a year from '21-'23 which was a ridiculous decision!
@@AllInTheGame01 Yes, The MCU needs to rest for a few years and recast and come back.
The Marvels was great. No idea why people hate on it so much.
Glad you had fun! What did you like about it?
on the casting of the 3 leads:
i still think that Yvonne Strahovski would've been a better Carol and Kylie Bunbury a better Monica.
The weak part to me has to be Captain Marvel herself, Brei Larson is not at her best. The writing could have been better.
The marvel movie universe is finally taking a nosedive and will probably finish soon .
The worst movie of a comic book is 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'.
Well..I imagine it would be hard to not give the benefit of doubt to every rebuttal said from mr.clause himself
For the first 30 or so minutes The Marvels was an awful mess, possibly the worst movie of the year. In spite of all that, I ended up liking much of the second half of the film. In the end, I agree more with Alonso's take, but I can also see where Christy is coming from
If you want them to stop pushing out crap, stop going to the theatre.
Zoe Ashton is the fiancé of Loki himself
Oh that's true! Forgot about that. How funny.
I don’t blame her. The writing for the character is paper thin.
Honestly I'm losing respect for Alonso in movie reviews. Is he just a clapping seal clapping at every scene and laughing at every lame joke?
Thor: The Dark World was never the worst MCU movie.
People didn't like the first one & Disney tried to save this one with characters from the show. Also I dislike the director previous movie candyman.
The worst MCU movie is obviously the first iron man? Am I right fellas!?
Be funny if Tom Hiddlestons Loki was in this cause he's married to Zawe Ashton.
That is a funny idea!
Lol
They need to disagree more so we get to hear different sides of the movie. 😂😂😂
The only thing bad was the villian but no movie is perfect
@@ryanmathis8286 I think maybe some of her scenes got cut? She had a solid motive I thought -- trying to reclaim what was taken from her homeland, and I liked that Captain Marvel righted that wrong in the end. Reminded me of Killmonger in Black Panther in that what she was doing was right to her, and understandable in the context of what had happened, but went about it in the wrong way.
The worst best actor winner is obviously Ronald Coleman in a double life? Right?
Great review.
Quantumania looks worse than The Marvels for sure.
This was definitely not the worst movie. I truly dont get you people
Which one is?
The Marvels - the marveling
It was sweepingly bad.

It's very exciting!
Way to Cenk up the score Alonso. Jk. Still not gonna watch this though. I have too much MCU fatigue.
This was at least an attempt at something and then says it is entertaining. That’s a recommendation. Please just say it was slapped together and totally incoherent.

I haven't seen it, chose to watch The Holdovers instead this weekend.
The Holdovers was great and really enjoyed it. I think for The Marvels will probably just wait for Disney plus.
I completely understand christy take on it. While i liked it i can't argue with anyone where they say itself the worst mcu movie cause it has alot of flaws
I did not like this 😢
This movie is made for the Tiktok generation, dont ask questions, look flashing lights, song and dance numbers..🎉
I thought this was a disaster. I couldn’t believe that Marvel released this movie in the shape that it is. And I just know I’ll be sick of hearing about this one, based on the discourse out there
Disagree with Christy. Nowhere near the worst Marvel film. I'd put it above Thor 2 and 4, Ant-Man 3, Black Widow and Incredible Hulk. It gets by a lot on the charm of the cast, and the quirky moments that Alonso highlights.
There were a few points of painful ADR though, like no attempt to hide the fact the scene was rewritten when they could only get actors into a recording booth.
stealing resources like Spaceballs
So funny 😄
Thor Love and thunder is the worst MCU movie and it's not even close.
Ha, why is that?
I really enjoyed this MOVIE Go watch it.
Why? What was good about it?
Will someone please please get rid of Brie Larson?
@@P.90.603 That puts you in a small minority.
