30 Best way to remove Bottom Paint on a Boat and the Adventure Continues

  • If I'm going to get my boat launched and up to Maryland to finish the interior, I need to get the bottom done. I'm thinking about doing Copper Coat or something similar. After some experimenting, here Is what I found to be the best way to get the old bottom paint off of your sailboat, it should work on power boats too. Removing the bottom paint is not fun, but some ways are easier than others.
Thanks for joining my on my adventure as I restore a hurricane damaged PDQ Antares 44 Catamaran. Come along as I learn about fiberglass repairs, and everything else I need to know to live my dream and cruise the world.
    Special Thanks to:

    Another great episode!
You do a good balance making things look almost easy and still show how much work it is and how long it takes.
It all comes down to man-hours, the only way to make the project go faster is having more people working on it.
I built one boat by myself and it took 3 years of almost full time.
The next boat I build I plan to hire apprentices and teach them boat building while paying them a very low wage.
Even better would be to get them to pay me to teach them!

    Greetings from the UK!!
Absolutely loved binge watching your journey restoring this boat so far. To be honest I thought you were crazy buying such a badly damaged boat and that it would never look anywhere decent in the end, how wrong I was.
As a fellow software developer, having a logical and methodical approach to a project is paramount to success.
No doubt the next sprint should be getting it sea worthy for the trip up to Maryland.
Best of luck and please keep the videos coming as am now an avid fan.

Hello Brian. I used a home brew copper bottom on my cat, saved money DIY. I Mixed the copper powder in heavily and I used hard set construction epoxy, NOT the eblative epoxy used in the 'name brand type'
Why wear/scrape it off ? Yes I do need to clean the bottom, but the epoxy copper bottom is hard like ceramic. It is permanent I feel. Clean it and looks new, never need to paint again ! Sail on, cheers

Keep up the great vids, and make them however you like. Re paint removal - Myself, I'd be quite afraid that a chem stripper would affect underlying materials. The 'good' strippers (containing mek) also are very effective at turning you into a veg. When I worked in the boat repair business many decades ago, the goto method of large bottom paint removal was sand/hydro blasting as an out-service. All bottom paint off in couple hours, and any blisters also resolved . Regardless of the method used, fairing was still required afterwards if a straight/true surface was desired

Moving is always difficult so I can see why the episodes were put on the back burner, especially a long distance move. Didn’t you show us this house in a previous episode? The dock and the woods look familiar. I’m hoping you get settled and can relax after so much work and stress.

Hi Byan, glad to see you back. I had to strip a thick layer of antifoul off the hull of my 35ft monohull before applying an epoxy barrier coat and Coppercoat. I started with a chemical stripper available here in the UK but there were just too many coats and it was making an incredible mess. But it softened the paint enough for me to scrape the whole hull with a carbide blade scraper, took weeks but I got there in the end. The Coppercoat is working well after 3 years, still needs pressure washing a couple of times a season though, I don't think I sail fast enough! Looking forward to your next video...

    Hi Bryan,
First, we have been following you for a while and I appreciate your videos and the time you put into creating them! I do have a question for you regarding the paint stripper. I would have been nervous to use the one that states it is indicated for epoxy. Did you have any trouble with your fiberglass with this stripper?
Also, at the end of this video you tease your LiFePo4 build… I’m not sure how behind “real time” you are with your videos but you may enjoy watching my video on our LiFePo4 build.
Keep up the good work! Corey (Salty Escape)

Use of the stripper and plastic was a great idea and as you said a lot less toxic. A home with a deep water dock and above hurricane zone- good move.
On another note- at some point you'll be looking at solar panels and controllers. As far as solar panels, please consider bifacial mono panels in the 400w (top side rating) range, especially for top of dinghy davits. The albido of the sea can be 30-80% especially with low sun angles so you can get another 40-60 watts production. The same goes for Hardtop bimini, but only if the panels' bottom side is the bottom side of the bimini (a la Parlay Revival). The albido of white fiberglas in the cockpit is equal to fresh snow. As far as controllers consider EPEver in the 60 or 80 amp versions as an alternative for the expensive blue brand. I have used Make Sky Blue 60 A version with wifi with good results on a cat but these do use a fan for cooling.

Oh man you just said you were going to do the bottom with Coper Coat! Don't do it!!!! Copper Coat is so hard to apply, it has to be applied in the right mixture, the right temperature, on the properly prepared surface. Honestly even as handy a fellow you are you can't even do that by yourself. You can't get the mix right in time to apply probably. Sailing Britican here on this platform had to have it done by three yards with entire crews to sorta get it right. Specialists had to be flown in...Dude honestly even if you could get ten years out of a bottom job, you'd be crazy to leave your boat in the water that long. Boats have so many maintenance items to accomplish at one to three year intervals. So in other words you'll still need to haul out. The best paint that YOU can apply is Petit's high copper hard. Most of the people I know are getting in excess of three years out of two coats of the antifouling. It is also holds up easier to cleaning than ablative(not talking about CC being an ablative). Not to mention it is soooooo much cheaper. I'm telling you as nicely as I can, you or anybody you will hire, will not not get a satisfactory Copper Coat application. There will be spots you just can't get right. That grow stuff like nobodies business. Search for the videos from Sailing Britican. th-cam.com/video/jVtzBenciz0/w-d-xo.html
