I saw him in Vancouver, BC, 6 years ago and he was absolutely amazing! I'm so happy we took our kids with us (they were 16 & 13) as we had great seats on the floor and Steve Winwood was his opening act! I'm soooo sad we never got to see him just one more time...

As great as this song is..The acoustic version I saw in the late 80s at Lake Compounce in CT was a surreal experience. He really connected with just him and the acoustic..the band came in later in the song..A legend that was a very talented cool unique performer. Petty did four different arrangements of this song: 1) this one; 2) the 1985 arrangement where it starts solo electric and the band comes in after "don't let it get to you"; 3) solo acoustic (1986 Bridge School Benefit); and 4) acoustic version of #2 above (which he did in 1995 and maybe also at Bridge School Benefit 1988).
Seeing this song wasn't released until 1981 it's from no earlier than that. Based on another video here from the same concert featuring Howie Epstein, it's most probably from the Long After Dark tour in 1982.
The perfect song? Pretty damn close. But then Tom had a whole bunch of those. A master of concise songwriting and economic lyrics that contained worlds in a few lines. We lost him way too early.
