When the live version actually sounds better than the album version, you know you are seriously talented.... so missed!!! One of his best songs, in my opinion.
Totally agree . I am so guilty of taking these guys for granted when they were around it was sickening. When Damn Torpedos came out I remember a bunch of us sitting around and basically playing it non stop all night at my house. We must have played the whole album front and back 8 /10 times. I saw them once in the early 80s and have no idea why I never really tried to see them again. And you mentioned talent Karen. Absolutely! And it didn’t matter the lineup. Ron Blair or Howie . Steve Ferrone on Stanley. Scott Thurston. All added to the band in some unique way. Rest In Peace Tom. Thanks for the memories
“Kinda of an older song” young Tom at the time did not know how “older” this classic would get!!!💗 The Legend, the man, the band…all timeless. Mission accomplished guys!👊🏻
My first favorite song, by TP; so many more since then. Thank you God for having sent such a talented & humorous guy to us. So sad that he’s gone too soon but his music will last forever !
I'd rather like to think we should rejoice we had such a brilliant artist in our life time! Enjoy, appreciate and love this video as that's how I'd hope he'd want us to feel!
I don't know what it is but something about Tom Petty makes me cry whenever I listen to him. His music is just so distinct sounding and makes me feel... hopeful? Not sure if that's the right word. He just seemed like such a nice talented man and I listen to a lot of rock and roll and such and a lot of my favorite stars have died and I never cry about them except for him. Something about him makes me so sad and I hope wherever he is he knows that young kids like me (I'm 16) still listen to his music and that he changed a lot of people. I think this is maybe my favorite video on TH-cam.
He was such a "COOL CAT"......I got a cinnamon Ocicat kitten 2 months after he passed.....Thomas Earl Petty just recently turned 7 years old his daddy accidentally broke his rear leg a few months back....but he's hopping like a bunny on 3 legs...😃
This video is a reminder that we took quality music for granted back in the day. I was 12 when this song came out and was a casual fan. Absolute master class in song-craft. Literally gave me goosebumps. Like Greg Kihn sang "They don't write 'em like that anymore."
What a fantastic performance! I was 19 back in 1982 when this was recorded. I had this album on cassette that I’d play non-stop in my 1978 white Chevy Vega. I love every single one of of their songs and I’ve been a HUGE fan since the mid-1970s. Out of the hundreds of songs they’ve recorded, this one has always been my very, very favorite! Thank you Tom for bringing so much joy and happiness into my life for so many decades. Your essence and your spirit live on..... ❤️
This performance of Here Comes My Girl is fantastic! Love hearing Tom's sultry speaking voice in addition to his awesome singing voice! And it's so delightful the way that, whenever Tom sings the chorus, he gets happy love sick grin on his face when he sings the "here comes my girl!" :) Just fabulous! Can't believe more people haven't caught this performance from the 1982 US Festival! Great video! Thanks for posting!
Is this definitely from the '82 US Festival? According to setlist.fm, the songs they played were: The Waiting One Story Town A Woman in Love (It's Not Me) Kings Road Breakdown Refugee Shout So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star Even the Losers And this video seems to back that up: th-cam.com/video/97mYaU4akVE/w-d-xo.html
THIS VIDEO SHOULD HAVE MILLIONS OF LIKES. Excellent song and performance! We miss you so much Tom and so is your great Buddy Jeff Lynne who still honors you at all his concerts with pictures in the Background when he plays Handle With Care.
Miss you tom. Wish you were here to heal our nation. Words would flow ,tunes would appear And all of us would start behaving like adults to get things done.
Such a beautiful song. well played (and recorded) here. I am so glad I got to see Tom and his band play. Many years ago at some big shed in the US it was a brilliant show. Straightforward and honest rock, with a bit of swagger and attitude, and a whole lot of heart. I remember Tom at the end of the show looking so happy to have been there with his band and all of us, and smiling and saying "Goodninght y'all, thank you for coming" A really lovely guy who is sorely missed.
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of this beautiful young lady I saw walking towards me across a field and I had to do a double take, she was with my best friend’s wife (quite a looker herself) and all I could think was: “who’s that?” As she came closer I realized it was my girlfriend who I’d only recently begun dating. She became my wife and 35 years later, whenever I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment like it just happened yesterday. Thanks for the wonderful memory, Mr. Petty, and for being a big part of the soundtrack of my life!
Everyone I’ve loved is gone, Tom Petty, John Lennon, Chris Cornell. Makes me feel so sad, but I love seeing them singing. Brings them back to life for me.
He died because he had a hip injury that he did not look after. He was on pain killers and did not want to stop touring. He neglected his body. Self medicating is dangerous. God rest a talented and cool guy
Tom ran into some trouble in Florence, Alabama in the early 80s at the University of North Alabama. A fight broke out close to the stage (some of his fellow Southern Rebels) and Tom walked off the stage and said that was it. Back in the day when we had adults, one of them pulled Tom aside and asked him if he wanted to get paid? He went back to work and it was a great show.
This song's official video used to play on almost all instances of AMC's weekend program called "Night Flight". There weren't a lot of videos back then but there were some great ones and the medium was so new, but all I needed to see and hear each weekend was Tom Petty and THIS song. Now whenever I hear it, I know I'll play it a few times. Thank you, Tom Petty. R.I.P.
It's a shame that Stan Lynch and Petty never reconciled their differences and got to play together again before Tom died. As a drummer, I love drummers that also sing.
Glad I was able to catch a show on his ‘79 Damn the Torpedoes tour, Psychedelic Furs opened & I was 20, can still picture them. What a great 👍 BAND!!! ❤
Anyone else realizing Tom is the greatest?
If this doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will ❤
When the live version actually sounds better than the album version, you know you are seriously talented.... so missed!!! One of his best songs, in my opinion.

Its not as perfect as the album, but it is a great performance 🙂
Sounding better than the album just means you have a good man at the mixing board.
Totally!
YES YES YESSSS
doing what he loved
…..that’s right….

I believe we all can relate to many of Mr Pettys lyrics
Gone way to soon we lost another legend here grew up listening tom petty he was great. Loved his music still listening in 2024. ❤

Tom's smile kills me in this performance. :)
Don't he look like he's enjoying himself ❤
Like he's got a secret … or he is far more sure of himself than he lets on. Miss him so.

How beautiful to see him again so young, happy, and loving what he's doing ♥️🙏♥️
Who on Earth are the 15 people who "dislike" this? I can't imagine. It is perfection.
Obviously people with no taste

It's required for ANY TH-cam video, I think, to tell us screw you.
AIs?
Amen
Look at how happy he is. ♥
“Watcherwalk.”
One of the single coolest line-deliveries in music - EVER.
Followed closely by "That's right!"

Tough to watch this awesome performance by Tom Petty who is dearly missed in the Music world of today.

@@bobdobolina4091 Like Jeff Lynne said; "Tom Petty was the Coolest Guy in the Music industry".
I still wake up and remember he’s gone. And then I’m wrecked again. 💙❤️
Look how sweet he is when he smiles. Love Tom - what a talent. Miss him.
I'm a teenager when I watch this. Wasn't he a doll!!!
He was an earth angel, for sure.
That smile !
Amazing talent!
Indeed
Great story teller great talent missed by all his fans ruled mtv with his songs
A masterpiece. Tom is so good. Nobody writes songs like him and performs like him. 🎩💕💕
I don't know what it is but something about Tom Petty makes me cry whenever I listen to him. His music is just so distinct sounding and makes me feel... hopeful? Not sure if that's the right word. Well Done Young Man We,ll MeetTom in Heaven 😊👣
I couldn't have said it any better. I'm 50, and I miss some guy I've never met but I love him and that's the way I feel about it.
Yes Thanks
What a singer. His smile is fantastic. 💕
I guarantee 99% of the ladies in the audience would gladly have been his girl.
This song easily stood the test of time ... arrangement, lyrics, chorus, dynamics - perfection in any way!!!
Those who down voted this song don't have a girl coming for them.
So great. I love to see Stan Lynch playing drums on this too.
❤🔥Stan Lynch with that DEEEEEEP pocket!💪🥁
Stan was the bands “Secret Ingredient”, what a Fine Drummer(!)❤
He was such a "COOL CAT"......I got a cinnamon Ocicat kitten 2 months after he passed.....Thomas Earl Petty just recently turned 7 years old his daddy accidentally broke his rear leg a few months back....but he's hopping like a bunny on 3 legs...😃
One of the greatest songs ever written. What a talent and a beautiful human being he was. We miss you so much Tom.
❤
❤ yes we do a legend gone to soon

This video always makes me happy in the beginning but enevidibly always breaks my heart in the end too.
Watch her walk, umm. I love when he says that!
My favorite Tom Petty song from 1979!
Every time I hear this, I want to go back and be that girl! RIP Tom!
Tom & the band. True American storytelllers....Love that line, "Watch her Walk". Rock it baby.
The Legendary and talented Tom Petty. RIP. My husband and I listen to his music every day.❤
R.I.P. Tom from Ireland discovered this album in 1979!!++
I miss you Tom. This song is one of his best. What empathy and insight he had.See you on the other side .
“Watch her walk.”- damn, I love that part!
Back when the live performance sounded BETTER than what's on the album.
To be fair, Petty always sounded better Live than on album. He and they are and were that good.
"better" than the album? (not quite).......
two different animals.
Yh hey
So true
It's called you sound like you play

he had a magical voice, no one can sing like him.
The man dedicated his life to his music and playing it live to his fans so glad I got to see him live in London just before we lost him
This performance of Here Comes My Girl is fantastic! Love hearing Tom's sultry speaking voice in addition to his awesome singing voice! The Waiting
One Story Town
A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)
Kings Road
Breakdown
Refugee
Shout
So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star
Even the Losers
And this video seems to back that up: th-cam.com/video/97mYaU4akVE/w-d-xo.html

As a highly trained musician, this song is amazing.... Amazing!

Glad to have seen Tom play at the Gorge in 2010 🙌🏽
Every song i hear on TH-cam makes me even sadder that I'll never see and hear him again live.
Tom. The old songs are the best. Miss you so much. Man I loved your music.

Petty & Lennon definitely my 2 go-to guys! They make sad times happy again!
Only the good die young. May he be in God's mighty kingdom, superior to here, though he is greatly missed.
He died because he had a hip injury that he did not look after. He was on pain killers and did not want to stop touring. He neglected his body. Self medicating is dangerous. God rest a talented and cool guy

It's a shame that Stan Lynch and Petty never reconciled their differences and got to play together again before Tom died. As a drummer, I love drummers that also sing.
This song reminds of summer days growing up in Seattle around 1980. Tom Petty was king then! God bless Tom!
