tom was, unlike his gregarious contemporary Springsteen, wary of his audience. This performance is transcendent; he is having the conversation of a life time with the people who love him. RIP We will never see the likes of him again and I am so grateful for his music and the posts from people whose lives he affected deeply.

know what you mean --- so much more powerful than original; Tom Petty was so hesitant to engage with his audience due to near death experience in 1978 but here the power is his conducting the audience to be part of the experience … nothing like it except perhaps Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes when the Berlin Wall came down. Epic is exactly right word!

Did you read Paul Zollo's Conversations with Tom Petty? he's a musicologist and what a brilliant read. I think the best way of describing the Heartbreakers is; they needed Tom Petty for his emotional empathy and leadership but also because he knew what supreme musicians he had in Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench; the list goes on and he let them get on with things, opposite of a control freak, no words to say what a great band it was despite ups and downs and deep sadness Tom felt when things were going awry and he felt excluded from his adopted family and got cynical for a while during the Jeff Lynne years; ok changes, some tragic but continuity which is nowhere else present in the rock world.

  • @thomastarwater6035

I first heard “Mystic Eyes” by Them with Van Morrison singing and playing harmonica. I thought the song was great. They were the only Irish band to get in on the British Invasion that started with the Beatles. It was only two or three years ago that I heard and saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ rendition and they turned it into a full-blown jam. Their audience was in musical heaven. I am glad that it’s been preserved for all time.

I love hearing from people who listen intently and have a musical dictionary in their imagination -- when Tom Petty became literally the last dj on Sirius XM he didn't play his own stuff; 1000s of lps he had been listening to throughout his life time; unbelievable gift. I know the focus has been on him but nothing not even Eric Clapton, George Harrison can produce the sounds mike Campbell can -- thinking of another song for Mudcrutch I think where he plays the mandolin; unearthly beauty. And yes, keyboard genius Benmont Tench; I know he made light of things but these guys were Tom's family which is why when things went wrong he was stricken to the core, no joke.

NO-ONE ever had a bad word to say about Tom Petty. Full stop. tx there is something about a live performance (missed that one) that transcends everything else. He died too soon; but his last tour, although it killed him, was a triumph. He lived more than most people on the planet, and gave himself to his audience. I wish selfishly he had the time to finish Wildflowers but he found his soul mate; had the best band in the world and wrote some of the best music I have ever heard. Tx for this upload! This entire concert was possibly TP&THBs best. It was in 2015 and was his homecoming to Gainesville and he really performed for his homies. The performances of 'You Wreck Me'. I write about exceptional live performance videos and music videos full stop. This cover blows my mind. Tom Petty would regularly go into a kind of trance when performing (Southern Accents perhaps another example) and didn't truly trust his audience; such an ambivalent relationship because he also felt he owed everything to the people who showed up, but there was that scary moment in 1978 … this is pure gold. words fail.

Tom always did what he loved, musically, along with the Heartbreakers, and he/they brought us all into it.

Revisiting this video -- it's often Allyn Kessler who uploads this unbelievable stuff so huge shout out to generous person who made this available -- my sis had music producers back in the day and when she did a cover they said, take that version, put it aside, make it your own or there's no point. I think this is one of those times when the cover is better, to my ear and heart, than the original.

Jon Stewart said of Springsteen: I am having a long conversation with my audience. So so different artists but this is that kind of incredible conversation. RIP TOM your last album would have been a meteor.

When I watch this performance I can't help comparing it with Peter Gabriel's live performance of In Your Eyes. The songs are vr different but I was mesmerized by how each man communicated with the audience on such a visceral level, it was genius. In real life both introverts, but on stage something ineffable happens. Tom will always be with us.

Wykonanie odkrywa nowe pokłady tego wspaniałego utworu, który jak wszystko co skomponował Van Morrison jest super. A on sam jest kompletnie nie doceniany.

I really miss Tom almost like he was family. Its strange I know but the death of an artist never affected me like this until Tom Pety. I grew up listening to him I was raise in Florida and lived all over that state most of my life. Hope there is a afterlife cause I wanna see Tom and Elvis again. I sure hope he knew what a huge affect he had on so many lives. He was so real and seemed un touched by fame and fortune Gone too soon but if there's a rock and roll heaven man what a band they have.

I heard George Harrison say about Tom He's not full of shit like most. So true how cool to be friends with George and Bob Dylan Cash and countless others who knew Tom was the real deal and earned the right to wear those shades at nite. Love you brother You live forever with your amazing catalog of music.

I can’t compare Springsteen with Tom Petty, Tom Petty is more of everything! Super songs, super timing, you are in his time feeling emotion, your on trip with Tom Petty, it surreal but so good it plays in my brain! I woke up at 3 am singing you tell me! Tom wrote so much more than great songs, the rest of the band help make it happen! Tom petty and the Heartbreakers one of the best bands ever, he makes me feel human!
