    Peggy thinks that life is a book being written by her in real time and anyone who deviates from her expectations is off script. She doesn't generally boss Hank around, but any time his feelings are involved she becomes a shrew under the banner of meaning well.

      I always wondered if Peggy's characterization came before or after the "rework" of her mother being a complete hardass. I've actually known people with parents like that focus inwards and become self-centered because of lack of positivity anywhere else meant they only had themselves to hype them up.

      This is actually true, and what a lot of a dudes do lol. When a woman is pregnant she is 6x more likely to be harmed by him because she has less time for him and that shoots up to 10x more likely when she's given birth. Because again, she has less time for him while tending to her newborn and healing. Even if he's never shown such behaviour before. And it's increasing every year, the biggest game over for pregnant women is their male partner. It's so bad that doctors check ups etc have posters warning women about it and offering support and resources.

    One of my favorite revelations when I got older watching this show is that Buck Strickland and Cotton Hill have nearly all the same vices(afaik Buck is just a womanizer, not abusive), the core difference is that Buck does respect/care for Hank to the point Hank being ANGRY at him is used as a wake up call to reel in his behavior a number of times throughout the show. Exemplified in the car wash episode where he tells off Kahn for agitating Hank, calling Hank his "golden goose"

    • @byronrush9802

      While the argument can be made that Buck does respect/care for Hank. He does spend allot of the time taking advantage of his loyalty and devotion. And not really paying or rewarding him for what he’s worth.
      Buck may not be as Verbally abusive as cotton. But he’s still a poor excuse for a father figure.

    • @bluecanine3374
      @bluecanine3374 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @kee1288 i always took it as Hank, who was raised by Cotton, sorta seeing the bad behavior as sorta less horrendous than it is? I don't want to say he sees it as normal, just not as big of a deal as others might. But Buck shows him some level of respect even if he is a mess, so in Hanks eyes he is practically a saint compared to Cotton

    • @Zinlain
      @Zinlain ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@bluecanine3374 I think it is something of growing up abused by Cotton normalized those other behaviors. Like Hank *knows* they are bad behaviors but doesnt seem them as inherently harmful(after all, despite Buck's womanizing, all his partners seem to be consenting adults in their own right. and Hank drinks just not as much as Buck.)

      Buck are the same through the "means to end protocol".
      Hank is the commodity with Buck, Cotton AND Peggy all using something covet Hank for what he gives them.
      Buck provided with all the comforts he has come to depend on he is no longer tgat Slinger and Blinger we have seen.
      Cotton with quiet admiration and adulation. One usually reserves for those to which they are unacquainted. Peggy more like his mother in the earlier episodes. I do not remember her name, she awarded proper emotional response or *groomed him. (*I did not use that wrong I looked to make sure)

    Hank always has parent issues. His dad was way worse scaring him as a child while his mom basically left him to fend for himself especially as her swinger spy days occured and how she expects Hank to defend her when she never did for him.

      Bobby was raised more in the village that is Rainy Street/Arlen than Hank and Peggy were raised in insular households-- he has the benefit of more outside influences and cultures than his parents ever did.
      Luanne benefited from a healthy father figure and a headstrong mother figure, but both Hank and Peggy worked to undermine her when she didn't follow the path they deemed appropriate rather than talk to her about why it's not ideal.

    I can totally get how Hank feels when he had those moments during this episode, especially in the later one where he tells Cotton he hates him. When emotions are high and you're overwhelmed, sh*t tends to come out that you wish you could take back.
    For me, it was when I screamed at my entire family - which consisted of my parents, my uncle & aunt's family, my siblings and their kids and my cousins & others - to stfu because I had gotten overwhelmed by all of the noise and stress of the situation; it also didn't help that I had just walked out of the restroom after having a nasty time, so I was not alright or ready to be flooded by kin being in my face and for kids screaming loudly. After _that_ incident, I remember just taking off in my car and making a beeline back to my parents' home, and boy howdy did they lay into me for what I did.
    As of today, there's no bad blood between me and my family that I know of - however, I try to avoid family get-togethers around the holidays to make sure something like that never happens again.
    *Edit:* Fixed punctuation mistakes.

    • @connorlee3704
      @connorlee3704 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude, I'm not sure that avoiding family get-togethers is a good idea, especially around a time like Christmas; to your family, it might look to them like you don't like them anymore and you might come to regret not going. I'd say that the best thing to do in this instance is to try to avoid one thing or the other from happening; maybe trying to avoid bad experiences before family get-togethers or family get-togethers after bad experiences.

    The issue of "having controversial emotions" is one I relate to SO. FRICKIN. HARD. Especially when you **know** that if you were actually honest with the people pushing you to speak, they'd just come at you like Peggy (or Susan in the F is for Family episode) and get mad that you didn't have the thoughts and feelings they _expected_ you to have. Like, yeah, I get that my feelings are "bad." That's precisely why I didn't want to talk about them!
    And it doesn't help that people seem completely blind to the idea that things can be more complicated than they first seem. As if it's physically impossible to feel A and B about a subject at the same time. Or to understand logically why you shouldn't feel this way about a certain topic, but still have and struggle with those irrational emotions.
    Most people are like Peggy where they just want some scenario they've made in their head to play out smoothly. With an easy solution or a visible "good guy/bad guy" so they can pat themselves on the back for being "supportive." But that's just not how these things work. Hank is completely justified to be upset with Cotton. Or to even hate him (especially as Cotton actively throws a temper tantrum and destroys the charity house.) It shouldn't be Hank's job to mend a relationship he didn't even tear apart. That was all on Cotton. And telling him "I love you" wouldn't have fixed anything.

      They are great gifts. But, as the gifter, I aways felt bad because of how impersonal and last-minute they feel. So I personally try to find a smaller gift to pair with the gift card to try and remove that "idk, whatever, just take some money" feel that gift cards have.

    • @LeoMidori
      @LeoMidori ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My parents and grandparents were like that. I'm trying not to be, but it's often the *world* that gets me riled up. In Cotton's case some of it is he never learned to be any different than he was; Tilly was a pushover until she left him, and I imagine he didn't just fight in WWII underage because of patriotism, he probably had lousy parents too.

      @@LeoMidori It's one of the many reasons I stopped watching anything news-related and walk out when politics or religion comes up in conversations. I can't fully escape it since it's constantly in my face, but I've put some hard lines on "world news" because all it does it make me angry, sad or upset.
      If I'm going to have issues, then I don't want to hear about "doom, agony, despair, war/end is nigh, this or that is destroying our country" and all that jazz that apparently *I* have to care about and fix myself or I doom the world.
      Yeah, no thanks I've got my own personal "doom, agony, despair" in my own head and in my own life. Those at least I can do something about.
      Which is why even thought I can never like Cotton, can't support him, or associate anything positive with him...I can't exactly hate him either. It's a weird "not black & white" mentality I have towards him that, to me, the world at large doesn't want to accept is real.

    Cotton's affection towards Hank can be inconsistent. There's this version, where he very reluctantly acknowledges that he perhaps does not hate Hank. I like this version. Then there's the other version where he is unapologetically abusive towards Hank and even cruel with no pay off. Maybe it was by design because the affection he shows Bobby never changes. You never doubt that Cotton adores his grandson.
    If it was purposely written this way because Cotton has regrets towards Hank, it's brilliant. If not, it's a bit irritating seeing as Cotton has very few redeeming qualities for an otherwise horrible personality. A hilarious one, yes. But horrible.
