Using Taylor as the voice of young Donald was so perfect, and it proves the showrunners were true fans and knew what they were doing. In a world full of reboots, this one will always stand out because they actually cared about the source material.
Sadly, it was her last role; she passed from cancer a few months later. But they managed to bring her back. For Christmas. Which is so disgustingly wholesome that even Disney shouldn't have been able to pull it off.
I think the reason they don’t usually punish Dewey is because he usually learns his lesson by the end so it doesn’t make sense to punish him. However they don’t always portray that the best so it makes it seem like he’s just getting away with stuff
This is way late, but a huge part of the issue is that it's always the same lesson. Dewey is constantly acting out and showing off and doing dangerous things, and most of the time, it's so he can glorify himself and constantly has to learn that, no, he's not God's gift to the universe and he's a kid who needs to listen to the grown-ups. And this lesson **never** sticks.
@@jordancampbell8597 Well, he's what, ten? Even without the nature of the show, chances are a kid his age wouldn't learn lessons as quickly as the adults would like him to. And he may just be learning the wrong lessons - instead of "Don't tag along with Uncle Scrooge when he clearly wants to be alone" Dewey just learned "Don't go time travelling".
My favorite, though probably most easily noticed, detail is the sweater. The fact that if you paid attention earlier in the episode, Donald as an adult is wearing that exact Christmas sweater (the one too big for him) Della gave him. That to me is just sort of the extra little gut punch to the feels.
Surprised how you didn't mention the funny yet brilliant scene where Dewie almost tries to explain who he is to young Della and Donald. Both of them tell Dewie to not speak of the future so as not to ruin any potential things that have happened in Dewie's current time.
I'll say it again. Anybody wants to do a reboot needs to take a class from DuckTales. They walk that line of referencing old tales and creating new tails perfectly. Well respecting the original

You hit the nail on the head for why i loved this show: it honored where it came from while still trying to do its own thing. Meanwhile, in certain OTHER Disney properties, it's "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to." (And then having the gall to act surprised when audience interest dies too)
One thing you didn't mention that I feel like is worth mentioning, is how much sense it makes for Beakly to be into the spirit of christmas future over present. After all, she's a spy. She "flirted with death" all the time.
This was a very interesting holiday episode! It was nice to learn that Donald used to be able to talk normal and I loved that the episode made some callbacks to the Disney Christmas Carol film with the ghosts of Christmas!
Honestly, I feel like the whole “Dewie could’ve been stuck in the past” bit isn’t really a concern here. The OG Ducks recognize him as a time traveler, so if Old Scrooge hadn’t picked him up then the kids would just tell Young Scrooge “ hey, this is our future descendent. Can you remember to pick him up in a few years?” And Dewey would just have to tell him what year he left in. But yeah, Dewey definitely got away with more than he should. It wouldn’t bother me that much if they hadn’t punished Louie so harshly later on just to add extra cruelty by going on his favorite adventure without him, abandoning the poor kid at home alone.
Actually. We gotta note. Louie literally.got GROUNDED for once in his life, even when he specifically learned his lesson, and.they even called out that just because Louie.learned his lesson, he thinks he should he free, which is swiftly shut down. Dewey literally endangers everyone more then he does, yet is let go because "awww he has puppy eyed and is acting sweet hes fine." Like jeez!
@@ghostslayer1981 honestly if it was just the grounding, I think I’d be okay with that. Louie had to learn that not everything can be solved with apologies and learning life lessons, and Della needed to learn how to be stern when it was required. It was how their next family adventure was to the place Louie most wanted to visit but was banned from going (keeping in mind that Louie is also the most reluctant one to go on adventures) while the family repeatedly called him while experiencing everything he wanted to but couldn’t that I can’t stand. I respect Louie for taking advantage of the situation with their rogues gallery to briefly become the richest duck in the world, but part of me wanted Louie to use that scheme to say “no, I’m done with this family and with adventuring”; this would’ve really shaken up the status quo and forced everyone to think more about their family dynamic. I know they didn’t have time to do this while also preparing for Moonvasion, it’s just something I wish I could’ve seen.
@OmegaX9 yeah. It feels like among the 3, Huey isn't often the one to do anything bad at all, Dewey constantly does things that should garner much more punishment, yet Louie gets the punishment one. He'll, I feel like with Della being stern, that should have been with Dewey. Objectively, he does the worse things then Louie does, to everyone's expense. He'll, he's her male counterpart even
I think something that tended to get overlooked a lot is, while the boys lost a mom, Donald lost his own sister. I think when Donald sees the photo it's a beautiful homage to the fact that he lost her too and that not a day goes by where he didn't miss her. Also, there is a moment where Dewey gets called out for his nonsense, and it's when Huey and Louie find out he was looking for Della alone. So I guess my point is while Dewey was looking for his lost mom, he forgot his family lost Della too. And it hurts.
10:58 Ok, so reason that the Wendigo shouts it’s name like a Pokémon and looks like a white Krampus is because of the fact that Disney, with its connections to Marvel, made a comic-book reference to Wolverine’s first appearance in this Christmas special for some reason. It was during a story when the Hulk fought a creature calling itself The Wendigo that looked and acted just like the one that Donald and Dewey fights in this episode.
You must've appreciated Della putting her foot down with Louie. Now, I can let go of the fact that Dewey wasn't punished in Last Crash because extenuating circumstances didn't leave room for it. But yeah, he should've at least gotten a stern lecture in this episode.
13:36 I agree like he had no right to say that shit to Scrooge since he risked the whole family (minus Donald) and everyone chimes in to “DeFenD DEweY” even Ms.beakly sides with Dewey and SHE KNOWS THE SACRIFICES SCROOGE MADE
Ok made up on the spot fan theory: in one of Scrooge’s early trips with the spirits they took him to this very party as a vision of the future, he remembered seeing his much older self fight the beagle boys. This means present day Scrooge was aware that his future self was coming and not wanting to deal with the Beagle Boys or people looking for investors, snuck out the exact moment they arrived.
God, it's so disheartening to know that Ducktales 2017 got canceled early, so they weren't able to fill out their run during the last season (Yeah, they got to complete the show, but they didn't get to follow through with their vision, and that's always a bit disheartening). It's clear how much passion and time the crew put into the show though, so I'm still glad that I got to experience it.
That one guy who tries to sell Scrooge on finding square rocks is a reference to a classic comic book story called "Lost In The Andies" by Carl Barks, where Donald is working at a museum and ends up knocking over a sqaure rock, it shatters revealing that they are not rocks, but actaully eggs. Sqaure eggs could revolutionize how eggs are packaged and stored, therefore a crew is sent out to find the source of these square laying chickens. The rest of the crew gets sick when they eat an omalett that Huey, Dewy, and Louie whipped up using those hundred year old square eggs, and so only Donald and the kids are left to search for what turns out to be a sqaure city of square people, who own sqaure chickens. The whole story is great, creative, and funny. Years later Don Rosa did a story that was a sequel to it and another called "The Second Richest Duck". This sequel is called "Return To Plain Awful" and I highly recconmend you read both of them if you haven't before, you'll have a good time
I watched both your Ducktales discussions. I think what sets Dewey and Louie apart is intention. Louie makes a conscious decision to do something bad that can hurt others versus Dewey who does something reckless but he never meant to harm anybody. As for the episode where Dewey blaming Scrooge for what happened to his mother, you have to understand that for the whole season that Dewey was actively trying to find his mother and he felt the weight of the secret weighing down on him the more he discovered. When Scrooge opened up and shared what happened, Dewey is hurt in both ways because it showed him that: 1) Scrooge did not stop Della from taking flight as Scrooge put so much faith in her coming back home safely, 2) Della decided to act recklessly instead of thinking of her own sons and Dewey feels a certain sense of betrayal that Scrooge was enabling her worst habits. It gets addressed in the following seasons but I really contribute Dewey being "selfish" as not going out of his way to hurt others but rather a way to stay true to himself. It's not like he narcissistically makes people feel bad because he has great emapthy (Let's Get Dangerous toward Gosling) and is the heart of the triplets. With Loiue being the clever one and Huey being the smart/wise one, it would make sense Dewey is the one that dew-eys things. TL;DR: Dewey is a character I enjoy because he reminds me of myself and I wish that I had a family that never talked down on me for being weird.
You thought having Russi Taylor was great? The original intended voice actor for Scrooge’s father Fergus McDuck in the season 1 episode “The Secret(s) of Castle McDuck!”was going to be none other than Alan Young, but he passed beforehand.
@@ShadyDoorags Say what you will about "reboots" as a whole...THIS one was special, and this is coming from a child of the late 80's. I feel what separates this reboot from every other one is that team behind the 2017 "Ducktales" cared about the source material (or at least they cared a lot more than the teams behind other "reboot" projects). Wanting to bring in OG talent like Russi Taylor (RIP), Alan Young (RIP), Jim Cummings (who didn't return as Nega Duck due to getting mixed up in a #MeToo-esque scandal), callbacks to the Disney Afternoon, more Donald Duck (who only left the main cast and joined the Navy in the OG "Ducktales" at the behest of Disney executives at the time; As a kid that always bothered me), and honestly some really great writing (both dramatic and comedic; I love the OG "Ducktales", but going back to Seasons 2 and beyond...Eeesh, that team MUST have been getting burnt out, because those later plots are not good).
great episode. Personally, I never saw Dewey as that bad, in fact he's kinda my favorite of the three for his energy and enthusiasm. And I'd like to think he did mature a bit as the series went on
I love that they figure out the Dewey was from the future. Then they go don't tell us anything, cause they probably done the whole time travel thing before. Also I like how Donald is wearing the sweater Della gave him but that he also welcomes Dewey back from his time travel adventure. Small moments that make me smile.
I think Dewey got the short end of the stick in this iteration. Scrooge has said that to get where he is in life, you have to be the smarter than the smarties, tougher of the toughies, and sharper than the sharpies. It's also shown that the boys are meant to exemplify each of these traits: Huey is the smart one, Louie is the sharp (aka cunning) one, and Webby is the tough one...wait... Throughout the show, Webby is shown to be the rough and tumble fighter given her upbringing. While this is fine, it robs Dewey of one of Scrooge's main traits. He's brave, yes, but he's not in the same league as Huey on smarts or Louie on cunning. Poor kid probably just feels out of place and just wants to fit in.
Although I’m not a fan of the reboot of Ducktales, this episode was definitely one of the best. Even though the morals of the episode weren’t perfect, the writers still nailed it when it came to making it appeal to the viewers’ emotions. It’s what makes Christmas that much more special when you’re surrounded by family. ❤
The way I interpreted Past never being able to find Scrooge was that he was always away on Christmas eve with the spirits, assuming they found him the Christmas after he ditched Past
Scrooge's dislike for Christmas comes from Carl Barks' Christmas story "Christmas on Bear Mountain", which was Barks' typical Dickensian Christmas story and already in that story Scrooge refers to Dickens' story "A Christmas Carol" from which the character's name is also borrowed. The character was intended to be a one-time character, but it became so popular that Barks began using Scrooge more often, while maintaining the antagonistic role of the wealthy banker as a critique of capitalism and economy. Later, Barks came up with the Scottish origin of the character, which I think was a genius character innovation, because the UK had banned Christmas in Scotland and now Scrooge's dislike of Christmas was due to the fact that he wasn't allowed to celebrate Christmas as a child and as an adult he had no one to celebrate Christmas with. And this is also why Don Rosa's sequel "The Richest Duck in the World" / "The Recluse of McDuck Manor" completes A Christmas Story appropriately as Scrooge finally learns to love Christmas and finds his youthfulness back when he has Donald and the boys to celebrate with.
I just realized, why didn't Scrooge ask the spirits for help finding Della? They don't even really need to mess with the past. They could just look into the past to see where she landed and then tell him in modern day so he can go get her. And even if they would have said no then he could have done it when he stole the time button
The Time-Brella takes you to the place in time. Scrooge would have to be taken to Della's ship but he doesn't know where it is or even if it survived. Even if he did, Scrooge can't breathe in space, so that would likely be his death.
You know what I love most about this episode? They made the wendigo a creature of pure desire and obsession, opposed to the knock off werewolves we usually get
This series needs more respect. Sure it has decently big fandom but it’s pretty niche. Now I’m finally glad that people I like are covering my favorite cartoon series of all time.
I like how staff from channels I watch about staff from years ago comes about the time I watch it. It happens way too many times but I am not complaining just lucky.
With all the praise you have for this serie's references and call backs, you really need to cover the finale and how badly they botched the Gargoyles reference.
I definitely think you should do a video the Darkwing duck reboot pilot that didn’t continue into a show (yet). It’s not much, but it’s something to follow up your previous ducktales episode.

I felt SO happy when Young Donald said "Quackeronni!"
I feel really bad how DuckTales 2017 isn't as a beloved cartoon as in amphibia an owl house😢
Also would love for you to do more DuckTales 2017 videos
Its ratings were just as good
It's a Shady Christmas!
Please shady do more ducktails reviews. This is my favorite series
13:07 scroge using his cane as a pogo weapon is from the ductails game i loved that reference
Yea! Another Ducktales video! This show is an example of a reboot done right.
great episode. Personally, I never saw Dewey as that bad, in fact he's kinda my favorite of the three for his energy and enthusiasm.
And I'd like to think he did mature a bit as the series went on
Of COURSE they made David Tennant travel through time!
That's been his thing for the past two decades give or take.
11:02 fun fact: her name in the brazilian dub is Dumbella
Ducktales 2017 recognition?!
WOO-OOO!!!!!
Two Shaddys in short time? MERRY CHRISTMAS GANG!
This review is looking good so far, I may have to actually watch DuckTales
14:01 Wow. I really didn't notice that the first time, and now that you mention it, it makes total sense...
God we deserved more of this show
I love that they figure out the Dewey was from the future. Then they go don't tell us anything, cause they probably done the whole time travel thing before. Also I like how Donald is wearing the sweater Della gave him but that he also welcomes Dewey back from his time travel adventure. Small moments that make me smile.
3:06 I really like the Disney scrooge mcduck Christmas Carol it one of my favourite versions of the story
This guy makes good videos
Always love the ducktales videos 💜
You're breaking your usual gimmick of not doing holiday episodes when they're relevant... AGAIN. 😂🤣😂
It only counts if it a week before it
I dunno his Juneteenth special was pretty good.
@@mattphillips3537 juneteenth isn't real
@@tfordham13it’s real for some and as long as it doesn’t bother anyone who cares.
@chrisc.100 no it's not a real holiday very few black people celebrate it
As a Disney fan I love the references of this show and the jokes you’re doing.
The way I interpreted Past never being able to find Scrooge was that he was always away on Christmas eve with the spirits, assuming they found him the Christmas after he ditched Past
This series is absolutely great loved it
Scrooge's dislike for Christmas comes from Carl Barks' Christmas story "Christmas on Bear Mountain", which was Barks' typical Dickensian Christmas story and already in that story Scrooge refers to Dickens' story "A Christmas Carol" from which the character's name is also borrowed.
More Ducktales please!
Commentary and solid life advice. Sweet.
12:22-12:24
Gosh darnit, Shady! Not only was this clip very well put together, I almost spit out the water I just took a sip from 😅!
You know what I love most about this episode? They made the wendigo a creature of pure desire and obsession, opposed to the knock off werewolves we usually get
I love this SHOW
Launchpad
God bless you Shady Doorags
12:34 “Synergy in general is really fun to watch”
I strongly recommend Wakfu. Some of the best animated team sequences I have ever seen
Shady making a holiday episode?!? What is this…
DUCKTALESSSS!!!
And this episode was the GOAT
Loved this episode
This series needs more respect. Sure it has decently big fandom but it’s pretty niche. Now I’m finally glad that people I like are covering my favorite cartoon series of all time.
This show was awesome
Didn't realize that was Wander until pointed out but immediately heard it.
Wendigo is from X-Men the Arcade Game. Like a 1:1 reference
I like how staff from channels I watch about staff from years ago comes about the time I watch it. It happens way too many times but I am not complaining just lucky.
All I want for Christmas is a Christmas episode review of king of the hill
Pretty Pretty Dresses
The trucker one
"AND THAT'S A FACT!" Is the greatest TH-camr catchphrase every created!
With all the praise you have for this serie's references and call backs, you really need to cover the finale and how badly they botched the Gargoyles reference.
I wasn't expecting this but i'ma watch it!
I might watch Duck tales now
You really should it is a really PERFECT show
Man that Ducktales reboot was so good. It really is a damn shame we didn't get more cuz that show coulda went on for a long time. Quality
I didn't want it to go on forever, but I definitely felt it had one more season in it.
Shady I really do love how much you use the Team 4 star clips. They are great and you are using them well.
I actually like the fight between Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas past specially the end of the fight
I definitely think you should do a video the Darkwing duck reboot pilot that didn’t continue into a show (yet). It’s not much, but it’s something to follow up your previous ducktales episode.
As fun as this whole review is, as an anime fan, the little lesson Doorags gives about 12 minutes in really hits home for, since I am one of those paradoxical old anime fans who like Ranma 1/2 but think the main couple, Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo, are a terrible/toxic couple precisely because Akane basically refuses to ever learn that very lesson.
Does the fact that Launchpad is wearing a sweater with a menorah on it mean he is canonically Jewish?
I'm going to say it does.
Holy shit I needed this. Thanks Shady.
I, suddenly feel that I should actually watch this show.
You should. It turned out really good.
You should. It's one of the rare reboots that aren't inferior garbage.
3:38 i named my first cat jormungundr cause when i found him, he was wrapped up licking his own tail. And we came up with the nick name mungy. So now me and my friends text about jormungandr the serpent, we say 'I JUST SAW MUNGY' He is currently at an old mans house in my old neighborhood cause i couldnt take him away and mungy chose him. Mungy is a coyote killer and protects the neighborhood. When he first started i was rreading reports on the neighborhood about a cat fighting coyotes off so the neighbor's started leaving treats and food out for it
The better Ducktales Christmas Special. The other one was confusing.
Fr, like, how old Scrooge is?
