Joey Ramone (Jeff Starship) w/ Sniper - "Cocksucker" - 1973 - Joey's Pre-Ramones band

  • This incredible footage resurfaced on YT in January 2022, after 49 years. It's Joey's first performance ever. I have slightly enhanced the video and audio as much as possible given the condition of the original footage.
Sniper was a glam punk band that formed in New York City in 1972. They were one of several bands that played at the Mercer Arts Center, Max's Kansas City and the Coventry alongside the New York Dolls and Suicide, and were most famous for its former members, which included frontman Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), prior to his forming the Ramones, and guitarist Frank Infante, later of Blondie.
The original lineup consisted of Joey Ramone, guitarists Bob Butani and Danny Wray, bassist Peter (Morgan) Morales, and drummer Patrick Franklyn. Ramone played with Sniper under the name "Jeff Starship". He later recalled, "I used to wear this custom-made black jumpsuit, these like pink, knee-high platform boots- all kinds of rhinestones- lots of dangling belts and gloves". Ramone's brother, Mickey Leigh, later said, "I was shocked when the band came out. Joey was the lead singer and I couldn't believe how good he was. Because he'd been sitting in my house with my acoustic guitar, writing these songs like "I Don't Care", fucking up my guitar, and suddenly he's this guy on stage who you can't take your eyes off of". Ramone continued playing with them until early 1974, when he was replaced by Alan Turner, formerly of 1960s Bronx rock band the Age of Reason.
This song - with a rather meaningful title - is taken from Snipers' only filmed concert, performed at the Underground Tonight Show in NY. Joey's look was still tied to glam rock fashion (same look in the early 1974 Ramones gigs at CBGB). However, there was already Joey's typical sense of humor (while performing "Cocksucker" he apparently wields a sex toy) and the opening riff is the same used later by the Ramones in "I Wanna Be A Good Boy".
In 1975, Sniper changed their name to Kid Blast until 1978, when they changed again the name to Grand Slam. They finally disbanded in 1979.

This is f’n great! I had no idea there was actual surviving footage of “Jeff Starship” in action. The corset, the dildo, the gratuitous and enthusiastic usage of the song’s title… just killer stuff!

So looking at this I have a hard time believing they actually considered sticking Joey behind the drum kit in the Ramones.

He started out as the drummer....

    • @BigSmoke-bu6ib

He definitely was the drummer for a brief period, but after all these years I'm just now starting to doubt the punk scene happened as organically as we'd like to believe. I still love the music, I just don't believe the mythos that these people (who all happened to know each other) were just typical, disenfranchised kids making noise in their basements until they got lucky. They definitely had some extra help, kinda like the whole Laurel Canyon scene

    • @JTStrikesBack
      @JTStrikesBack ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@BigSmoke-bu6ib Oh without a doubt, there was a ton of help involved. A lot of nice connection, a couple people with money, and then building even more connections. The book "Please Kill Me" is a great read - as well as the podcast No Dogs In Space, they did a 3 or 4 part series a couple of years ago about The Ramones and how they really came together.
Nothing is ever as organic as it's made out to sound - but that doesn't mean what really happened is a bad story, in a lot of cases it's just more complicated than can be explained quickly.

    My stab at the lyrics:
    ---------------------------------
    Walkin' in the street
    Paradin' your feet
Want a drink, you have to be bored (?)
    Your hand's in your pocket
    Playing with your socket (?)
    (??????????????????)
    'Cause you're just a cocksucker
    Yeah, you're just a cocksucker
    Sucking all the time
    Ooh, it feels so fine
Keeps runnin' down your throat (?)
    Cocksucker
    Standin' (?) on the corner
    Dancin' (?) with a boner (?)
Waitin' for your jaws to come undone
He hands you a dollar, then you start to holler
    Screamin' for more
    'Cause you're just a cocksucker
    Yeah, you're just a cocksucker
    Sucking all the time
    Ooh, it feels so fine
Keeps runnin' down your throat (?)
    Cocksucker
    (??????????????????)
Your (?) home and you're all alone
    (??????????????????)
    'Cause you're just a cocksucker
    Yeah, you're just a cocksucker
    Sucking all the time
    Ooh, it feels so fine
Keeps runnin' down your throat (?)
    Cocksucker

First verse, last line "You find that it's only a swo-ord" (or maybe cord)? Really not sure what the last word of that line is but I assumed it rhymes with 'bored'. The rest of it I'm pretty confident about.
