    Also you can use the PEX connector and just use 2 hose clamps. You have great ideas. I've used a few this year! Keep up the good work!

  • @wjf213
    @wjf213 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Another cheap way is to insert a wooden dowel and drill a hole in each end and add a screw. Now you can break them down for storage. Also, if you ever kink the pex tubing, take a propane torch and carefully heat the pex tube and it will turn almost crystal clear and straighten right out after it cools. I've laid miles and miles of pex for floor heating and a couple times we've kinked a tube and needed to remove those kinks, and that's how you repair the tubing. Keep up the great work.

      They also make a shark bite tool to remove the fitting for easy breakdown too. This is a much better idea if you’re never using Pex outside of this. Thanks for the great video.

    I made it even cheaper by just zip-tieing the pex to itself to make the circle, and then zip-tieing the pex circle to the pvc uprights. I also just used a long screw to go threw all three pipes at the tip instead of using the 2" cap. Thanks for the ideas!

    The other thing I would do is either wrap the screws at the top with electrical tape or put a piece of heat shrink tube over them. That way the sharp threads of the screws won't end up cutting through the wires on the lights. Love your videos and will definitely be making the gingerbread man soon!

    I saw the cheaper option listed in the description of video 1. Made a tree today using the push-to-connect coupling. Worked great. Made a 7 foot tree with 11 boxes of lights. Had to use incandescent or it would have broken the bank. Need to keep my eye out for cheap LED strings for next year.

    • @dianeladico1769
      @dianeladico1769 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't know if this is an option for you, but Amazon has some good deals on lengths of LED lights. Right now there's 147' for $18 with decent reviews. A 6' tree with 25 strands needs around 150'. It may be cheaper with the after-holiday sales but these have the thin wires are are easier to work with, if that idea appeals to you. There's only one plug but the downside is if it goes out, the whole tree is down, rather than replacing a section.

    • @slbentley

    I just made three of them this week. Christmas is not catching me off guard this time. Instead of the Pex clamps I used 7/16 dowel and a drill point lathe screw. For the smallest tree (4 ft) I cut the pex a bit smaller, about six foot I think. Much tighter than that and the circle may be a little wompy, although who can tell in the dark?

  • @BrooklynDave718
    @BrooklynDave718 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I forgot to ask if you know what the circumference of the base of the tree is using 10 feet of pex tubing for the base. I am actually making these for a Christmas show in our local theatre. It’s a big stage so I am making the trees 10 feet tall. I may have to add another piece of pex tubing in the middle for better support.

    I do love the look of these trees but since you are going down the "save money" route here are some ideas:
    * Screw the PVC pipes to the PEX ring rather than using those 4 way joints
    * Use a wooden dowl that is a snug fit to the PEX rather than a real PEX connector, a wooden dowl could be cut up into short lengths to make multiple trees.
    * Screw the tops of the PVC pipes together, down a little from the top. You can then string the lights onto the pipe and stand the bauble between the pipes at the top.
    I'm unsure if zipties are cheaper than screws but you could drill holes and use a ziptie instead, one larger one for the top and 3 smaller ones at the bottom. The frame isn't really load bearing so doesn't need to be that strong.
    After I saw your video last year I have been thinking about use this design as the basis of medi pixel trees for my own Christmas light display this year but I ended up making an 8x4ft pixel matrix instead. Next year maybe :)
