Guess what? Stan directed the video. He said it was just him and two or three other people with a camera going to familiar places in New Zealand which is his home. Can you believe it? No big budget. Just him and his friends. And he had only two weeks to write it, record it, do the video and get it to the director, Ava DuVernay! Blessings on blessings. ❤

Filmed in Stan’s hometown area in NZ - Tauranga, Rotorua and I believe his wife’s hometown area - looks like Mt Ruapehu area - desert road - everyday scenery here in NZ - Maori language - Stan being his true self in my mind - representing his people from the soul🙏

Stan has interviews out on TH-cam promoting the film Origin, directed by Ava DuVernay. Stan explains the process of creating the song, and video production, of "I am". There is also a lyric video on TH-cam, released by Stan, that translates the chorus from Te Reo Māori to English. Ngā mihi.

If Stan had time, it would've been cool to have our other Polynesian cuzzies, Aborigines, American Indians, African Americans, Irish, Indians etc standing in the forest. This message is relevant to many peoples who were colonised or displaced.

I never get tired of these reactions! I watch this waiata a few times a day. Its on repeat in my head. Its so powerfully US❤❤❤

The movie is based on the book Caste, which compares the societies of India (caste system), America (during slavery period) and Germany (during Hitler period). Very enlightening book. As for Stan, I have followed him since he appeared on Australian Idol (won it) in 2009. His first releases were very pop oriented but his career has transformed as he has taken on themes related to his culture. I think it’s a beautiful use of his amazing talent and this track is a high water mark. I can picture him performing this with full orchestra at the Academy Awards show. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t get nominated for best song.

He’s just posted up a live vocal performance of this song. Look it up. He did it to an audience in LA. A vocal master class.

  • @richyhodge8935

what you are feeling is the power of Maori vibes

  • @irenecudd962

The beat so reminds me of the old folks with their chants

  • @hungryfurball

To think he wrote, produced, and mastered this song in 2 weeks

  • @maidaursuladawn44glasgow3

All the scenes other than those shots of the lady were shot here in The Bay Of Plenty here in New Zealand were Stan comes from and I too live here in the Bay.

    Love how you got goosebumps

  • @whisper88888

Loved your reaction, so spot on, you touched on so many things of our culture that is depicted in Stan's performance in this video, our waters, our mountains, our forests, our lands, the sun, moon, stars and the universe all things that have been gifted for humanity, our spirituality. When we are introducing ourselves we pay homage to our mountains our waters our land our meeting houses from where we originated and our ancestors. Gosh really found it difficult writing this in English, never the less hope you got the gist

  • @daveygirl4168

Let's put this kn repeat in spotify? Blow stans song up :)😊

  • @pearlzplace8431

You are right, his backgrounds are of natural power. This is where he drew his power from. His 1st words are I am of colour and he wrote that to touch all coloured brothers and sisters, that why you felt goosebumps. We share a commonality.

The Movie was independently financed through private funding so wasn't a large budget that most production companies have, also Stan "The Man" Walker makes us Maori ( Native indigenous) I am also related to him through his great grandparents (Ngati Porou). The comments from @reneeasul3347 were correct Stan and just a few close friends made the video through many parts of Aotearoa from Rotorua, East Coast where his tupuna (ancestry) comes from, and also Waitomo Caves. Stan makes all Kiwis so proud of him, BTW this Waiata (Song) relates to who we are, where we come from our links to our past, and where we are today as Tangata Whenua ( People) As does the Movie a must-see when it is released next year in I believe in February - march 2024

Take a look at the documentary on his channel, about his health struggles. What a man to get through that, then produce such a brilliant song/video. Hats off to him! ❤❤❤
