Heya Brodie just wanted to thank you for your tutorial videos. I just started playing Ultimate Frisbee with a few friends of mine and I havn't ever picked up a frisbee before until a couple weeks ago. But watching your videos and practicing your methods have helped me a TON. Just wanted to give you a thank you. You are one of the few people I look up to and want to be like.
@bslade86 I actually was taught to hold the disc tightly with all four fingers against the rim (this is how a lot of people teach the backhand grip). Over the years I evolved to the grip I have now. I really think its the best grip for power, spin, and keeping the disc accurate and having the control to throw inside out or outside in.
your videos are the easiest to understand and very helpful, I've already improved. my form before was just some crap that I taught myself to do, no one ever showed me how to actually throw it right. thanks a lot man
I've been playing tennis for about 6 years now and I've only just really started getting into ultimate. I find it's amazing how much of the bodily motion comes naturally and makes sense, but for some reason never had the mind to put it together with the grip.
Anybody watching this after following him as a golfer? Always knew he was a stud at ultimate frisbee just never watched any of his content..now I watch every golf video and am only a bit late to the frisbee party lol. Keep killing Brodie
@brodiesmith21 You make a good point. Everyone has different hands, and what works for one person won't be optimal for another. I teach a lot of juniors to throw, sometimes they have to use some abnormal forehand grips just because their hands are so small.
@exeterdisc oh so your looking to throw an inside break? Well having a quicker release all comes down to shortening the motion with out losing power. If you watch the teaser video for the forehand you can see that just by snapping your wrist with a limited arm motion the disc can still have a lot of power. I would say to work on just getting more snap in your wrist and reduce the size of your arm motion. If you could take video and post it back here I could take a look.
@clizzaster I hear you on this issue. Very small kids (e.g a 6 year old) may need to use a four fingered grip just to be able to support the frisbee. By the time they are in late elementary school, they should all be able to use a traditional grip. Aslong as they switch over to a two-finger grip when their hands get bigger, go with whatever works.
Thanks for the advice on the quick release. How about the follow through? Starting at around 4:46 - I'm seeing big follow throughs. During a game situation - do you usually have the room for this or do you modify your technique to make it more compact (more linear than arcing?)
@clizzaster Well like I said I'm just explaining everything on how I do things. If you don't agree you certainly don't have to do anything I say. However, I would say that this type of grip has served me well over the years and I have had a lot of success throwing backhands and generating a lot of spin. One thing to think about is that I am 6'4 and thus have decent size hands. So my fingers aren't going to match up perfectly with you. Thanks for the comment.
@timothyegilligan Thanks! This is a great suggestion. The only reason I don't go further in depth is because I'm trying to keep the videos from being to long. In the future we will be doing a lot more videos that are more in depth. So more specific things that we can really break down.
@timbochung When you have a tight mark you want to practice on a quick release. The longer your windup and release the more likely the mark will mess with you and thus mess with your throw. Also you can work on pivoting to shift the mark to your right (breakside) which will give you more space to huck
RACING HARD lol I used to be a master at this throw, but got into other throws like the backhand as well. Now I'm a pro at it and I forgot how to throw the forehead smh
@butor20077 Florida Ultimate Already has that video out (Search Florida Ultimate Five Sponsorship). But if you are really curious how spike I can have a lot of fun filming that episode of Bro Tips.
@MrDuifs Well I don't want anyone to think that this is the only way to play or throw or anything. I'm just trying to show what I do. And I have had some success with this grip.
@timbochung I def modify it sometimes. I try to stay with the arc because that movement really gets me that extra power. But sometimes I will have to change my follow thru so I don't knock someone out lol...have u checked my backhand huck video out yet?
Yup, checked out the huck vid as well. Good vid, nice technique. Again, was just wondering about the follow through and how that works with a mark. Perhaps this could be the topic of another vid? How to deal with the agro mark...
Help. My throw looks good at first but it always turns over into the ground. I can through it good when I flick it, but if I go into the full motion, it turns over. What could be the problem?
Nice vid, I really could've used this 6 months ago lol. My backhand still isn't amazing and I feel like I'm not getting enough spin so I'm gonna try tweaking a few things tomorrow and see if it helps.
Hey Brodie! I'm a huge fan, and I'm in the process of starting a team at my own school in NY. I was wondering where you buy your discs, individually or in bulk. Thanks!
hey what's the music that plays in the beginning of the video? sounds cool :) also great videos! My friends and I started to play Utlimate :D it's fun :)
@steelerfan786 Hey. It sounds like if your low release backhand is coming to IO that your grip might need to be tweaked just a little bit. We can make a video on low release passes that will certainly help fix your problem and you will be breaking the mark at will soon!!!!
Thx Brodie now my friends and i play Ultimate Frisbee, Do you reccomend a 175 gram over a 165 cause all i have is a 165 so is that good enough or do i need a 175 gram?
Hey Brodie, With your backhand grip, is the disc still coming off of your index finger, even though you have it more on the underside of the rim instead of inside it?
@brodiesmith21 Were you taught that grip when you first started throwing or did it evolve over the years? (asking as someone who changed his BH grip several times before settling on a 'best' configuration)
Brodie, I'm pretty comfortable with the backhand in general, but when throwing the longer backhands, I always feel like I'm going to hit the mark when following through. Is there any kind of advice that you can give?
brodiiiiii what if iv goten so use to my finger on the rim of the disk that reduces the spin that i cant learn how to undo it is it still ok to do or is it BAD ENOUGH that i have to learn the right way ????or is it fine to keep it this way ???
do you have any tips on how to fix this problem that i have. i've been been playing ultimate for almost three years and recently have been working on my low release throws. my low release backhand IO's A LOT. is there a way i can fix that so i can throw flatter to in-cuts?
I think it might be helpful explaining why you hold the disc a certain way. Rather than just saying you should have the disc pressed against your hand for example, you can say something like, "you really wanna press the disc against your hand because you need to have a strong grip." just my 2¢
Excellent instruction. Frisbee is not just a great toy, it is also a sport.
I like to dance with my friends
sometimes we have partys
someone save the president

How to throw a disc golf frispee
Nice to see high quality tutorials about this... Probably one the best (series of) tutorials I saw on youtube about any subject. Thanks!
I am just starting my frisbee adventure and this video was very helpful. Thanks a bunch :D
Lucky you. You're in for some really good times. get ready to meet some really good people too.
your videos are the easiest to understand and very helpful, I've already improved. my form before was just some crap that I taught myself to do, no one ever showed me how to actually throw it right. thanks a lot man

@timbochung def...i actually love it when the mark is crazy...easy to break
Anybody watching this after following him as a golfer? Always knew he was a stud at ultimate frisbee just never watched any of his content..now I watch every golf video and am only a bit late to the frisbee party lol. Keep killing Brodie
@brodiesmith21

@furiousgoats haha my favorite throw. We will def do a video on that. I think next on the board is just the basic forehand.
@LilChaoster don't forget my fav...high release lefty backhands...got it added to the list!
@exeterdisc oh so your looking to throw an inside break? Well having a quicker release all comes down to shortening the motion with out losing power. @colbrio1 On the way. We are actually currently working on that. Nothing like throwing a 80 yard flick.
It's 2020 and this is still helpful!
Thanks for the advice on the quick release. How about the follow through? Starting at around 4:46 - I'm seeing big follow throughs. During a game situation - do you usually have the room for this or do you modify your technique to make it more compact (more linear than arcing?)

@exeterdisc are you talking about the backhand or forehand?
im watching this in 2020 and i watched this every single year
@timothyegilligan Thanks! This is a great suggestion. The only reason I don't go further in depth is because I'm trying to keep the videos from being to long. In the future we will be doing a lot more videos that are more in depth. So more specific things that we can really break down.

@unkjoe I can see...those discs are sold by the team and I'm not sure who is in charge anymore
I'm a frisbee backhand man
I've mastered it
RACING HARD lol I used to be a master at this throw, but got into other throws like the backhand as well. Now I'm a pro at it and I forgot how to throw the forehead smh
@Crastics07 So the frisbee i use is a 175gram discraft disc. Not sure what your asking.
@nikegolferxl you wouldnt mind helping an old friend out on how to "huck" a backhand?
@butor20077 Florida Ultimate Already has that video out (Search Florida Ultimate Five Sponsorship). But if you are really curious how spike I can have a lot of fun filming that episode of Bro Tips.
@ConsoleGamerTV age is just a number! Try to flatten the disc out more and more wrist snap.
thanks so much Brodie helped me so much
@MrDuifs Well I don't want anyone to think that this is the only way to play or throw or anything. I'm just trying to show what I do. And I have had some success with this grip.
@Apollys let me know how it goes for you
@clizzaster Acutally for the forehand everyone should roughly have the same grip...the backhand can be a little different
@timbochung I def modify it sometimes. I try to stay with the arc because that movement really gets me that extra power. But sometimes I will have to change my follow thru so I don't knock someone out lol...have u checked my backhand huck video out yet?
What are you doing at 3 am?
Me: watching this
Hahaha that’s exactly what I was doing when I read this 😂
you're a very good teacher. thanks for the video bro
@ChanimalX10 Just trying to show how the stuff we teach relates to in game play.
Yup, checked out the huck vid as well. Good vid, nice technique. Again, was just wondering about the follow through and how that works with a mark. Perhaps this could be the topic of another vid? How to deal with the agro mark...
Good, clear, concise instruction, pro!
@butor20077 If we can get more than 20 thumbs up I will show you my best spikes!
Help. My throw looks good at first but it always turns over into the ground. I can through it good when I flick it, but if I go into the full motion, it turns over. What could be the problem?
+Michael OBrien You are pulling the disc. You can't allow your body to turn. I have a video on my channel showing this problem.
Thank you for the video, my backhands are getting better.
Nice vid, I really could've used this 6 months ago lol. My backhand still isn't amazing and I feel like I'm not getting enough spin so I'm gonna try tweaking a few things tomorrow and see if it helps.
The music is called Hip Hop Instrumental [ Legend Flow ] for anyone wondering!
thank you! those airbounce throws can be useful in a game!
Hey Brodie! I'm a huge fan, and I'm in the process of starting a team at my own school in NY.
I was wondering where you buy your discs, individually or in bulk. Thanks!
Really helpful man. Subscribed.
@colbrio1 More videos to come. If you have anything you would like to see let us know.

@steelerfan786 Hey. It sounds like if your low release backhand is coming to IO that your grip might need to be tweaked just a little bit. We can make a video on low release passes that will certainly help fix your problem and you will be breaking the mark at will soon!!!!

u ever play disc golf? i dunno if the frisbee u use is same as discs as in disc golf but if similar do u use the same techniques?
@thebrend88 Well that always helps!!!
Have you ever played frolf? (disc golf) Lots of fun... once you get the hang of it!
What would you advise for practicing in high winds?? because I normally Britain doesn't have a non windy day
He's pretty much the Michael Phelps of frisbee!
@JOEMan9012 Will def do that. Make sure you subscribe so you get all the videos when I post them.
IN THE SWAMP! :3 i live a couple miles away from Gainsville
brodie is it recommended to do a short pass(5 yards, which its hard to spin), or just do a long pass which is more efficient?
Thx Brodie now my friends and i play Ultimate Frisbee, Do you reccomend a 175 gram over a 165 cause all i have is a 165 so is that good enough or do i need a 175 gram?
Thanks man! I'm going to try it.
@brodiesmith21 im just getting into the sport, do u have a vid with all th rules?
Hey Brodie,
With your backhand grip, is the disc still coming off of your index finger, even though you have it more on the underside of the rim instead of inside it?
@brodiesmith21 Were you taught that grip when you first started throwing or did it evolve over the years? (asking as someone who changed his BH grip several times before settling on a 'best' configuration)
do you use a disc golf disc or just a frisbee? just wondering
@SqueakzMcGee Copyright issues.
Brodie, I'm pretty comfortable with the backhand in general, but when throwing the longer backhands, I always feel like I'm going to hit the mark when following through. Is there any kind of advice that you can give?
Hey brodie , can you give me some insight on how to throw backhands and forehands with more accuracy?
brodiiiiii what if iv goten so use to my finger on the rim of the disk that reduces the spin that i cant learn how to undo it is it still ok to do or is it BAD ENOUGH that i have to learn the right way ????or is it fine to keep it this way ???
Good tips
@Vilageidiot13 obviously I know what I'm talking about lol.
@Jzman4044 you have to have alot of spin because it makes it go far and accurate and the wind won't blow it out of the air
Shot Brodie thanks for the tips
hay brodie what is the music you use it is so cool can u tell me
do you have any tips on how to fix this problem that i have. i've been been playing ultimate for almost three years and recently have been working on my low release throws. my low release backhand IO's A LOT. is there a way i can fix that so i can throw flatter to in-cuts?
Who’s still here in 2024?
@clizzaster Not that I know which way is or isn't the best, but I'm pretty sure Brodie is one of "the top throwers".
What do you do with your fingers during the throw? It always come out with a lot of wobble even when i throw 3 or 4 yards.
Kevin P M Has nothing to do with the fingers if it's wobbly. Just means you need a better snap on the wrist for a better rotation
brodie whats the song at the beginning It's sick
@brodiesmith21 Do you know where you can buy one of the Frisbee you use?
Watched this years ago to learn.
Now showing it to my gf to teach her.
@toddhelton Spoiler Alert: your my guest speaker for how to throw a scoober
So when is the spiking video coming ?
Frisbee is gettin big dude
Gotta drop the highlight reel at the end. Good move.
downloaded all your vids, you're amazing.
I went from nothing to mvp because of you!
ive seen some people throw a backhand frisbee that goes downwards, then goes back up. down up; how do you do that?
What is that soundtrack from the beginning?
Szymon Wadowski Darude Sandstorm
Agent Kallus (dead) meme king!
Do we need to put force when letting the disc go ? I still can't nail it properly still wobbles.
Hey Bro. I hope you reply to this. Whats the title of the music in the intro? thanks. :)
I think it might be helpful explaining why you hold the disc a certain way. Rather than just saying you should have the disc pressed against your hand for example, you can say something like, "you really wanna press the disc against your hand because you need to have a strong grip." just my 2¢
Song's name: Pour Celles - H & D - Instrumental
Actually the song is Darude sandstorm
