This video is brilliant. It took me hours to figure out all of these smaller details that makes a massive difference and here it is all perfectly summarized. Well done Ryan.
Janco thank you! Ya when you add up all the little things it really changes the throw eh? Make sure to check out Rob McLeod's channel he's 100x more knowledgeable than I am on throwing long!
Coaching YCCS this year, one of our team pullers and I disagreed on where to stand. I was insistent that he should be left side of the field for a backhand righty pull, he wanted to be on the right and let the disk float in at the end from out of bounds.I wasn't 100% confident I was correct in telling him to do it my way, but I'm glad at least 1 person agrees with me =)
You have at least TWO people who agree with you! There's me, and I don't know much, but there's also a national distance champion and it's hard to disregard someone who holds world records haha www.ultimaterob.com/2012/10/03/pull-diagonally-and-have-deeper-more-consistent-pulls/
Very clear points that make a lot of sense. Did not know how many things there were to think about. Great practice tips at the end. Can’t wait to try them out.

I think you missed the part about how many steps and how the footwork is for the pull. (fewer than most people think). That was what improved my pulls the most!
Some great tips there I'm going to try next time on the field. One thing I found helped me get longer throws was using a powerball hand gyro. Made my hands and forearms stronger which got me a few extra metres on my throw.
@@ryanlowe6243 neither did I. I got it to help with wrist issues I was having from using a computer mouse too much. The benefit to my frisbee was a lovely surprise. My flicks and hammers got the most improvement from using it.
@@whidzee Cool, that's a great idea to train your wrists - they're such an important (and clearly overlooked, from a training standpoint) part of the throw!
Awesome, glad it helps! Release angle will be a bit different depending on what disc you're using for disc golf vs. the 175g ulti disc I'm throwing, but you'll likely have figured that out ;)
Great video. I empathize on changing a long-established backhand grip. In December last year I adopted Rowan McDonnell's thumb placement. He bends his thumb up and pushes down at the knuckle rather than the pad of the thumb. Crazy smooth release, but I had an unreliable backhand for a couple months. Drove me nuts.
Wow thanks for the huge compliment! Brodie's unreal, huge respect for everything he's done. Hopefully he kills it in golf now, I think that's where he's heading next.
Thank you, I enjoyed it. Useful advices. What weight of disc do you prefer or propose for distance throws? Do you prefer a slim disc for that or a little gibbous one, which has more drag and lift? And what about these for MTA?
I appreciate the catch disc form/ultimate or even just for fun. Do you throw Disc Golf? If not, you should. Its the greatest sport ever in my humble opinion. Plus Canada has so many dope course cheers
I fan out my fingers under the disc for a pop pass, but otherwise this grip is what I try to set up with for all backhand throws, short and long. It seems like it just creates a crisp release with plenty of spin. I've actually had team mates have difficulty catching my backhand throws after making these subtle grip adjustments because there was suddenly way more spin on the disc than they were accustomed to!
@@ryanlowe6243 I've had that issue, you make the perfect pass for the score and then watch it spin out of the catcher's hand. Playing with spin is where throwing discs really has its gratifying depth. A gyroscopic wing and parachute.
If I were to have thee chance to meet 1 youtuber for the whole day it would be you. Btw I've been doing the "Unstoppable Ultimate workouts and it's been helping in a few places.
@@ryanlowe6243 I'm enjoying Yoga / Stretching and Band star. I haven't had the chance to do enough of the others. Also I've been practicing my Backhand pull and forehand pull and I've been getting them the whole 70 yard field.
Yup I play disc golf a few times each summer. I only use a driver and a putter, I'm not yet involved enough in the sport to have a full range of discs for different shots. I prefer to keep my hands free for things like beer haha.
Haha I was wondering if it would cause that kind of confusion. Especially with BOSS in the video thumbnail like that, being a type of disc golf driver and all. Personally, I've found that my backhand drives in disc golf have improved using these same techniques. Apart from release angle, I'm fairly certain most of the mechanics can be of benefit in both sports.
Ryan Lowe yeah you got me as well! You’re right many of the mechanics for both sports. DG you are reaching straight back and pulling straight through with the nose angled down (relative to the discs flight path).
I think you could revolutionize this concept if you stopped saying pull. The throw is a push from left side. Not a pull from the right. If your left side is the faster side, you will rotate around yourself faster. You push with your left side, throw out to 10 o’clock(ejected from your chest and the wrist cock), and spin your chest around to 3 o’clock - 5 o’clock. Think on it.
This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for to fix my backhand huck! your videos have improved my game so much keep up the good work
Thanks for taking the time to write that Kenny! It's a huge honour to get that kind of feedback and I really appreciate it.
damn what a lucky dog to have a pro frisbee player as an owner.

Yes I play disc golf too! Awesome game. Love it. Those drivers go forever, then I return to throwing the 175g and it's like throwing a futon haha.
Do you use weighted disc to strengthen throws? are there ways to weight a frisbee?
I have thrown weighted plates (10, 25 and 45 lb) to increase torque strength for frisbee, yes. But I haven't thrown weighted discs per se.
I good for throw but I didn't know about that thing.
