How to you make it straight? A long time ago like 4 years ago I was playing ultimate frisbee with my friends I through the frisbee and it went curved and went out of the school and we had to get a teacher to get it. It was my second time doing this and my friend that owned the frisbee said I am banned of throwing the frisbee so how do I make the frisbee straight?
Thank you Rowan! im 37 playing at masters level and i'm still learning and adding to my throws! those videos help a lot! due to your videos, my scoobers and hammers are now part of my game :)
43 and learning how to throw all over again. I had an action that sort of worked that I used from 1998 to 2012, then coming back to ultimate recently I had totally forgotten how to throw. So I've been re-learning, mostly from Rowan, how to throw properly. Wish I'd have learned earlier!
Been throwing for 30+ years and sometimes I huck pretty far and sometimes I don't. What you're saying about elbow first coincides perfectly with a feeling I sometimes have that I can see results in the disc going much farther. But wasn't super clear in my head. It was definitely a certain feeling I knew that made the disc go further but it wasn't clear that it was elbow leading so that when the hand and wrist came through it was all happening with a whip. Upper arm about shoulder, lower arm around elbow, hand around wrist - all ADDING TOGETHER like a whip. Perfect description and understanding of what we're trying to do. That translates to the disc moving fast as fuck in that second before release. Then there's spin and angle. Funny how much of this is technique. Strength and flexibility obviously help, but it's also a skill and a way of moving. So fun. Especially to get better by being smarter but not necessarily working harder.
Genuinely thank you very much! I'm going into my Senior season of high school but I only started playing about 8 months ago and at first the throwing mechanics of basically everything were really difficult for me. I played all season and had a lot of fun but can't say I was the greatest player ever. Just very recently I've found out about high level club teams and the AUDL and it's been super cool to see people who play this game at such a high level and keep the spirt of the game alive and well. This sport just seems like such a happy, safe, fun place and I'm exicted to maybe someday play like 1/4 as good as you haha.
This is great stuff Rowan. Any tips for getting the elbow/forearm flexibility necessary to get the angle shown at 2:47 of the video? Your elbow is essentially 90 degrees between your forearm and bicep and mine's probably 45 degrees at best. Thank you.
Thanks for this awesome vid. Your slow mo w/angles vid got my huck going. Are there ideal placements for the discs release point, like in front of the foot, parallel, etc?
Great video Rowan!! Love the details on the release timing. I think my issue is with the wrist load. Do you consciously use your wrist muscles to pull back the disc, or do you rely on only the elbow lead momentum to load the wrist?
Good stuff! Observation and the question for you. The first clip of your throw and the first few demo throws you made had a pretty decent amount of pivot foot movement before the release, now that's not getting called very often in AUDL of WFDF but my question is how important to you is it to keep that foot planted? As an experienced thrower I know there is more power to be had when that foot moves vs when it is planted firm so I think it does give an advantage but do you think it should just be allowed kind of like how the gather step in basketball eventually just was accepted? Would love to hear your perspective on it!
Hey Rowan, great video. I have something of the opposite problem. I really struggle to throw a quality forehand very small distance like less than 10m. I hook it and shank it all over the place. Any tips?
Lefty backhand is an alternative to short-distance flicks. Can put some touch on them and they can be a lot easier for the receiver. My 2 cents. Happy hucking :)
The flick huck tutorial the world has been waiting for. Thanks Rowan
It is time. too much potential in the game right now for incorrect mechanics!

I'm a Disc Golfer & these tips will help a lot of forhand disc golf throwers. Always reminds me of pitching a baseball. 😉👍🏼
It’s nice with the disc golf’s to add some stability and let you really rip!
I've been working a lot to perfect this throw lately, I like how you explained the elbow mechanic, it's so crucial!
Once it clicks it's a game changer! Glad you are putting in the work

Did anyone else notice the backwards shorts at 6:30? quite the Easter egg. Thanks again for a great video Rowan!

One of the best videos to this topic so far - thank you!
Thank Rowan I learn a lot on how to throw : I will have to try them
thanks for this instructional content!
No problem! Everyone's support towards Excel Ultimate has allowed me to keep the TH-cam content alive
Thanks Roman Sir for ur teaching forehand and Backhand 🙏🙏
Very helpful thank you Rowan.
Thanks Rowan ✊
@rowan is the man!

Thank you, Rowan!!!
No problem Ian! hope it helps :)
Highly appreciated, thank you. Thank God I have my dog with me who loves catching my discs. ;)
What software are you using to trace the path of the disc in flight and in your windup? Do you think it’s helpful for analyzing throwing form?
it's called ace trace and it is nice... except it's way to expensive and I can't get past that haha. $23 for 6 months...

"So did you get that"?
"Um no, could you show me again"!
This isht is 🔥💯

Do you keep your palm up throughout releasing the disc? Or do you turn it over so that your thumb is uppermost?

I'm sure we will. I love to travel and meet the ultimate community
@rowan ever wonder how nethercutt throws full field bombs without a backstep? Hehehehehe
Too bad my elbow doesn't bend that way. :-O
Bro is traveling on literally every throw
