These guys are legends, absolute legends, should be household names. But great art does not always work out that way, it is not always recognized as the genius work it is, within its own time. Really glad I got to see KingsX live a couple years ago, the sound and music was phenomenal. Hope to see them again in the future. Even bought the Tech21 dUg bass pedal ! 🤘👽🤘

'Should be household names'.....I got over this DECADES ago!! The other extremely wearisome word Kings X fans always use is 'underrated'. I feel sorry that dUg, Ty and Jerry have had to hear it over and over and over and over......
Time to let all that go.

What a fantastic interview! I first discovered KING'S X when in 1989 I got to interview the late great Eric Carr from KISS. He was telling me to check out a band called King's X and their album Out Of A Silent Planet. I am glad I took him up on his offer because for the next few years, King's X was all that I listened too! What an amazing band! Cheers for the interview Charlie!

RE: playing in Nebraska....I got to see King's X and Galactic Cowboys play at a long-gone bar in Lincoln called "Guitars, Cadillacs" - it was a converted movie theater, and the stage was about 25 feet in the air above the floor (above where the theater screen had been). Really like Doug defending the fourth album King’s X (1992). It was a good album but I remember the timing was difficult and people were against Sam Taylor & Bill Ham -type fourth members as grunge was happening. I read an article then where 50% of the text was about Sam and whether the band are in control. Crazy.

You can't beat "Ooh Song", "Chariot Song", "What I Know About Love", "Dream In My Life". Those first 4 albums, if you find fault with them, you're crazy! :)

I have to add even when "Please Come Home Mr.Bulbous" "Manic Moonlight" and "Black Like Sunday" kind of threw me what direction they were going, they were putting out solo albums that were awesome. They have never ever disappointed me. Ever.

When it came out I didn't like this album that much since I thought it felt like left over material from FHL sessions. I was wrong but I still feel like it was material from a phase that should have since passed, especially when Dogman came out after. BUT now I really like most of the material here and it does have a special place in my collection. A lot of great stuff on it. I'm happy Doug liked it.

1992 King's X was my introduction to the band. My Uncle was a promoter for RCA Records, and he always hooked me up with metal and heavy rock albums that my parents didn't approve and wouldn't buy me, all through the 80's. Then one day, late 1992, he handed me the cassette and said "hey one of the guys thought you would like this". At the time was still almost exclusively into Slayer, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, just about anything that went hard musically speaking. So when I first heard it, I didn't think it was for me. But music was scarce (we were very poor), so If I owned an album, I listened to it. And I started listening to the cassette in my walkman walking to and from school. and that's when it happened. The song writing and the musicianship blew me away. Been a fan ever since.

In the 80's and 90's, I was working in record stores. I was working at my college radio station and I'm a musician. My whole circle of friends were all big fans of King's X. I had a framed promo poster of "Faith Hope Love" with an autographed "Dogman" album flat signed by Doug hanging in my living room for years. Years later, I had new friends see that poster and they would ask "Who is this band?" and that floored me. The band was so much a part of my musical conversation with so many people that I couldn't understand why so many had not heard of them. To see this interview with Charlie is awesome to see. Love King's X.

saw King's X four times. It's the most that I've ever seen one band. King's X and Blue Murder opened for Billy Squier at the Omaha Music Hall in 1989. Saw them play the Back Room in Austin TX in the March 1990. In Regards to Nebraska. I saw them twice at the Ranch Bowl(closed and the location is now a WalMart) in Omaha. 1992 for the self titled album and 1994 for the Dogman album

I saw Kings X in my hometown of Knoxville, Tn during the Tape Head tour. I had already been a fan for 10yrs and to this day, it was the greatest performance I had ever seen. After the show, I spoke to Jerry and I asked him how they sang so in tune together and his reply was “I don’t know. Do we?” It Amazes me that these guys can’t comprehend what we see and hear from them. Maybe it’s humility? Thanks for doing this Charlie!

In talking about Dime's love of King's X, i can remember seeing King's X at the Canyon Club in Dallas and having Dime (somehow unnoticed) stand next to me in the crowd just being a fan. Then he made his way to the front - ducking down so as not to get in people's way - and talked to Ty while Ty was ripping a solo! This was before everyone had a camera in their pocket. Such a cool, cool moment!

I love the way the mention of the album Dogman induces a collective purr. :) And the way they wax lyrical about the end of We Were Born To Be Loved. One is the peak of King's X studio output and the other is the best live moment of a King's X show....for me. But I'm sure I'm not alone. It's lovely to know they highlight these things too from their side just as we do.
Can't wait for the album. The way they talk about.....W O W ! ! !Can't wait for the MOVIE too.

I was at the Limelight show w/ AIC opening, and it remains one of my favorite shows of all time. I had gotten to meet the guys in AIC at the Concrete Foundations Forum a few months earlier, and then again when they played in Atlanta, so I knew what they were about.
You talked about trios, what I describe as my "desert island" bands (if I could only pick the music of 3 bands to listen to forever) are all trios with singing bass players: Motörhead, Primus, & King's X. With their music catalogs, I could scratch every musical itch.

Still one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life and is ingrained in my memory forever. King's X at some small/mid size club in New Jersey around '91/92 I think. I believe they were still playing the Silent Planet and Faith, Hope Love stuff at that time. I got there early because I was dying to see what Ty was playing through and he had a big, black sheet covering his guitar rig which was slightly off stage. I'm sure at that time it was the L5 and the sound was fantastic. What really got me though is there were maybe 300 people in this club and these guys played like they were playing Madison Square Garden. The songs were perfect, you can tell they were having fun on stage and the harmonies were impeccable. I saw them several times since then but that first time for me will stay with me forever. Thanks for doing this Charlie. It's a really cool thing to see an amazing musician like yourself "geek out" over another musician or band! I'm right there with ya brother!

Saw King's X at a small (now defunct) club on Greenville Ave in Dallas called the Underworld. Ty had issues with his rig so they said "Fk it!" and played acoustic. AMAZING show!

i remember seeing Kings X at the Thisty whale, in River Grove IL., and just being blown away. they sounded heavier than metallica that night. I've always loved them. so tight. the bass drum plays every note the bass player plays, which adds to their sound. thanks for a great interview. all guys have their own voice. and of course gotta love the vocals !

I love this interview so much. And Charlie, your appreciation and knowledgeable questions, and even your guitar knowledge(!) is really inspiring. You're an incredible musician and I love all the work you're doing, on and off drums.

Charlie's absolutely right about 'Gretchen Goes To Nebraska'. There are few albums where every song is good and interesting. I place it right next to Led Zeppelin IV at the top of my Top 20 albums of all time. The A Side of 'Moving Pictures' is also that good, but I've never cared much about the B Side.

EVERY King's X release from the Mega Force through the end of the Atlantic era was a gem in its own right. Putting all the focus on the debut and Gretchen was a wasted opportunity.
There are a few great songs from the Metal Blade era forward but the albums, overall, do not stand up to those first 6 releases IMO. (Though I will say some of the later material KICKS live.) Can't wait for the new one (how much longer??!!). Sounds like they put a lot of time and love and care and craftsmanship into it.

I somehow missed out on King's X early, but over the past few years have become a huge fan. Hoping to see them live for the first time in Charlotte this October. I think Dug is right, about Goldilox not getting the initial push it should have. If it had, in the the then current musical environment, KX may well have gotten the kind of recognition everyone agrees they deserve.

I saw them as The Edge a few times in Springfield, always knew they would be a big force in the music world. Had a demo tape that Dug hit record on accidently, you hear him say " Oops wrong button. LOL Still have the Sneak Preview album.

At 40 min. mark Jerry mentions Kerrang! and that's where I first heard of these guys. I must've like and agreed with the writers other tastes because I bought Planet. I met a guy and he said he bought Gretchen at a garage sale and didn't like it. So, I had doubts we'd remain friends. and we didn't. I saw Kings X after Gretchen and they ended with Burning Down. It was a little bar club so i got blasted and went to the back and it sounded perfect/ Great way to end the set. One memory was a guy, maybe Ty's or Jerry's brother cause he had a coat like Hendrix old vest from Monterrey.
