It seems like a very nice city. I have received an offer from the University of Sheffield, and if everything goes as planned, I will be there in November!
@@priya_xox6509 For me, everything went as planned, and now I've been in Sheffield for 3 months studying Mechanical Engineering. I hope you come too and have a great time!
My father's paternal side is from Sheffield, coming to Australia in the early 1900s. My grandfather is the last of our line born in England. I visited Sheffield briefly a decade ago, but plan to spend several days here next year. One place I’ll spend time is the General cemetery where my g.g.grandfather is buried, and Thornhill, Dewsbury, where St Michael's Church has memorials to our ancestors. This is a wonderful video, opening up a city I'm looking forward to getting to know.
I lived in Sheffield for five years, but moved to Lancashire in 1995, and so much of it is different, and yet at the heart of it all the old buildings are there too. I loved my time there, and the quirks it has, like the library lends works of art, huge canvases along with the usual things like books, records and maps.
The modern is crap, soulless ugly boxes thrown up to make profit$ for those who don't have to live with it; Sheffield is FULL of that, its embarrassing, esp around the Uni, who flatten listed buildings, ignoring 1000s who petitioned & even donated cash to save them; they just don't give one, real shame..
Bristol Council should watch this video! Yes, it is possible to redevelop and maintain clean and neat City Centre . Very jealous of your tram network too.
The tram network is only a third of what it used to serve prior to the end of the trams in 1960. There are one or two archive films on TH-cam that show you how much further they used to serve Sheffield back then!
You unknowingly walked straight past “the man with the pram” at 2:48 right outside the moor market dressed in a green wig.. he’s a Sheffield legend, walked around for years collecting donations and recently surpassed raising a million pounds for McMillan cancer research.. there’s a documentary about him coming out soon I believe 👍🏻
Thank you for this video. I was in Sheffield for my masters 12 years ago… Sheffield is a lovely city, it’s like second home for me. Happy to see the streets, thanks again for the memories 😊
lovely to see Sheffield growing again. i grew up in Sheffield, as a young girl stood on Sheffield Cathedral steps with my school mates and sang Christmas songs, 1960,s. It has changed so much i hardly recognize Sheffield anymore it still has its landmarks i can recognize. Fargate was so busy the crowds made it hard to walk about.
@lynmeadon4719 Hi! By any chance did you know a chorister called Michael Wood? He would've been singing here (I believe) about this time. His grandmother Elsie was an aunt of my paternal grandfather, and I'm trying to locate family before a visit over to the UK next year. Michael's father was Ben Wood, named after his grandfather.
Beautiful City and super clean as well, (Don't people in Sheffield ever litter?). I enjoyed watching your video in particular the portion along the canal. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Neil, thanks for taking me down through Sheffield. It's been many years since I walked those street, Love the new changes! Good to see you back on the cobbles again and looking forward to the new amazing places you have in store to take us! :)
Thank you so much for the video! I'm Argentinian and just 17, in a pretty hard economy too, but one of the things on the top of my bucket list is to visit Sheffield (It has been since I discovered the Arctic Monkeys, and through them the city, so probably for about 4 or 5 years now), and though I know it'll take lots of hard work and time, I know I'll eventually get there, but this is a lovely way to enjoy and get to know a bit of it in the mean time. Appreciate the video greatly, the quality is amazing and the information is too, once again thanks a lot and hope you're having a great day 🫶🏻
the side street at 22:23 is definitely the best bit. the main centre with shops isn't nice at all - looks like every town centre but wide. might visit. thanks.

I’ve lived in Sheffield all my life and never seen some of these places so thank you, great video!! It has made me more optimistic about town and regeneration, with a little joined up logic from the council theres real potential here, its just a pity that areas already regenerated like that beautiful area of castlegate next to the don get hardly any footfall, because what tourists or inquisitive locals are going to want to walk through the mess of fargate, castlegate and (improved, but still nothing to shout about) fitzalan square? That, and for people in the suburbs the city centre just isn’t as accessible as meadowhall due to lack of cycling infrastructure outside of the city centre, lack of free parking in town (arguably fair enoigh but-) and lack of reliable, convenient public transport to get us there. So here’s to completing that regeneration, filling retail units and extending the tram network!!
27:09 Is it just me or is the Sheffield Cathedral playing a bit of Northern Soul?? I recognise "A Whole Lotta Shakin'" from Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Maybe Sheffield's not going downhill so much after all! If Sheffield Cathedral regularly plays Northern Soul, I might have to pop in!! ♥️🤭
The reason thar the Moor and Fargate looked so crowded in the 50s & 60s is that everyone had to walk on the pavements as the roads were open to frantic including buses and up to 1960, the trams. Now these streets are fully pedestrianised, there is much more room to walk about.
Love the video I’m from Sheffield so great to see the place changing for the best I remember when city centre was booming , both markets full fargate full & the moor , spent many of Friday & Saturday nights in Roxy’s, I just wish our council would think big and try to catch up with Leeds Liverpool Manchester Birmingham, they seem to be able to keep the city centre full come on Sheffield catch up…..
City centre is wnk compared to what it was in the 80's n 90's,, the new bars restaurants and shops can shove it as far as I'm concerned, sometimes you just want something familiar something with character and fond memories, there's very little left of a once better time in sheffield now,,
Moor certainly looking better now. Was a dunp when I left a few years ago. And can someone please do something with the old Salvation Army Hall. It's been empty for years.
I live there, home of cutlery, two professional football clubs, where the world snooker championship is being played, what to do I think, city centre a bit of a dump at the moment

The city has gone through a massive transformation over the last couple of decades and has had a massive amount of money invested in it. So why oh why do a minority of people insist in covering the place with graffiti. Why on earth would anyone want to do this? I really don't get it.
It's looking great now in parts...I'm a Sheffielder, but what the F is going on with Fargate? It's been a building site for years now with very little done and no workers most days. I worked on building the tram network in the 90s and it was completed in less time! 12hr shifts might have had something to do with it, and an absolute army of a workforce.

Sheffield City centre gets worse every time I go down t' town. Fargate's become the land of the never ending construction site, every time I get off a bus round Fargate I end up thinking, "What the bleedin' hell they up to now?!" Also most of the City is pedestrianised so most elderly and infirm are driven away from going to town anymore. Used to be a good deal better when those bus stops were in service that now stand unused out by the Town Hall. It's a disgrace! 🤬 Not to mention those mini Berlin Walls dotted around the City Centre or should I say the Anti-Terrorism ramparts! It's totally driven my 80 year old Mum from staying home mostly and ordering shopping online! Well done Council!! Makes me ashamed/embarrassed to be a Sheffielder at times.
Could've been a much better place but greedy planners & council have destroyed so much of our history, even just in my 38yr lifetime, so much lost. I was hoping there's somewhere nicer to live; old buildings, less crap, but apparently people come to Sheffield thinking its great; so how bad is rest of UK?! - Best thing for me is the hills & bus out to Derbyshire 💖
