I watched this the whole way through and I really enjoyed it. I had no idea about these beautiful places in Sheffield and in particular I am a bit fascinated by The Bear 🐻 Pit. What an amazing thing to see and yes, heartbreaking too. I thought the video was sublime! It flowed beautifully and was seamless. Even despite the challenge with the weather, which never phased you! In the late 70s, I heard the Ghostly story of the Halloween night rope. It was discovered on Cemetery Rd late at night winding through the General Cemetery on Halloween. Young kids tried to find where it led but no trace of its end was found as it wound around the Cemetery. The Rope itself was unusual; very thick, heavy and very dirty! The following day it was gone!

Many thanks for this. It must be a good thirty years since I was last in the General Cemetery. Back then it was quite neglected and even more overgrown. A Friend of the Cemetery took us round on a guided tour and I'm sure we were told that the catacombs were somewhat under subscribed, but the local hospitals would inter stillborn babies there. A sad thought. We've been to the Art in the Gardens before, particularly when my partner was exhibiting her paintings, but OH what a terrible day when you visited. Did'nt know about the falcons though.

Hello, you arrived on my recommended. YT algorithms are working great. I've been in Sheffield for 11 years and I love learning about the history of the city. I've been to the cemetery for an event that a friend was showcasing his music creations. It was lovely. I've been to to the gardens twice, but never see the bear pit. The river sheaf is supposedly getting uncovered near castle square at some point just to give you a heads up. Very pleasant vlog, I'm subscribing. 😊
Oh gosh I can imagine it is so frustrating! I can imagine setting up for these shows is so time consuming only to have the flipping weather spoil it!! X
Great video. I'm actually from Derbyshire but I did live near Sheffield for 2 years ( Darnall ) 1976. My eldest was born in 1978. Since then we have lived in Beighton (top and bottom) then moved back to Derbyshire for 10 years then on to Nottinghamshire and have been here 25 years. My eldest who is your age has a girlfriend up North and she thought I sounded like I was from Sheffield and she bought me a fleece top boasting about Yorkshire lol. Xx
Used to live over the road from this for years and it was a regular walk into town through it. You should see it when its full of snow in the winter, its fabulous. They often have gigs, films and stuff on in the chapel. I saw Ghostbusters in there!
Lots Of History in Sheffield, another cemetery that has been neglected over the years is Wardsend & Rivelin Cemetery. Such a shame the old buildings are decaying and not being preserved and used, although it looks like some are getting looked after. Have you heard of the Megatron under water tunnels in Sheffield ? I must admin the peregrines were something I didn't know about in Sheffield and will certainly be taking a look at - Thanks for the info
Hi. Just seen your video that came up on recommended videos. Sheffield General Cemetery is a nice place. I live just down the road from there. So visit there on a regualr basis and have many many photos and videos of it too. It is a shame that is a bit over grown. But they are letting it be that way for the wild life. Also the Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place to visit too.
Absolutely LOVE The Cemetery. I know it well. Such a peaceful place with a fascinating history. Are you aware of the Neolithic Stone in Ecclesall Woods? Another ''thing'' to see in Shef. It's not very spectacular, but still very cool to see, considering it's about 5000 years old.
@@BeckandBeyond It's not that easy to find if you don't know where it is... And like I said, it's not that spectacular. I did a live vid on my instagram if you want me to tag you in it. Apparently it was only discovered in 1981, so nobody knew it was there until relatively recently.

I’m now living in Leamington Spa and sadly they had elephants 🐘 back in the day. And we have a peregrine falcon. I keep thinking James would like Leam for a visit. Pubs, restaurants, charity shops for H and beautiful park.
I had to take my son to the botanical gardens quite a few years ago now. He wanted to go there for a project he wanted to do for his graphic design course. I was more concerned about where I would park the car than anything, so didn't do much research on the gardens. I didn't know about the Bear Pit until we got home and looked the place up on the Internet. We live 12 miles east of Derby, so we haven't been back.

Yeah, it's a disgrace how people would want to force Bears to live such a depressing unnatural life like that down a pit. At least in modern zoos they've far more space to walk around and communicate with their mates. I don't agree with the entrapment of animals, they're natural habitat is their home which is where they should be left to stay and live their lives.

I’m sure that the ‘Bears of Sheffield’ statues in 2021(ish) were based on the bear sculpture in the bear pit. The bears followed on from ‘The Herd of Sheffield’ in 2017, which were inspired (I’m almost certain) by Lizzie. These were two brilliant trails around the city which both raised money for the Children’s Hospital. Hoping there’s another one coming in the near future!

Lived in Sheffield all my life and never knew about the Perogrine falcons. It took me a dozen times to findthe beer pit when going in there. Great video!
Some of my ancestors are buried in there. I know the exact location of the plot but sadly the Council removed all the gravestones on that side of the cemetry.

the old architecture was much more detailed than the block boxes that the stack up on one another today. Modern architecture is just put up to make a profit with far less detail.
@@BeckandBeyond Yes, the detail was fantastic, which was true masonary stone cutting and skilled labour. In reality, today we lived in an uncaring world that way to fast paced as it leaves the poor people behind. I love the old english architecture it's some of the best in the world and England is a stunning place viewing wise as it has everything.

Perculate,ferment,marinade, enthuse.i once soaked whiskey with strawberries 🍓 for 6months for a Christmas treat,it was awful to bitter,that was done on a recommendation, i think a cherry liquor might of sufficed. I think the whole perpose was to eat the strawberries & drink the whiskey, but im not sure now,maybe i should of thrown the strawberries..

There is a bear pit at Wentworth Garden Centre which was originally part of Wentworth Woodhouse.

My great grandad moved his factory to that area in the 1870’s from Meadowhall, my dad used to get locked in the bear pit in the 1950’s as a kid

These were two brilliant trails around the city which both raised money for the Children’s Hospital. Hoping there’s another one coming in the near future!

Lived in Sheffield all my life and never knew about the Perogrine falcons. It took me a dozen times to findthe beer pit when going in there. Great video!

Some of my ancestors are buried in there. I know the exact location of the plot but sadly the Council removed all the gravestones on that side of the cemetry.

When i think of Sheffield i think of,pop singers,full monty,nick clegg,jess innes ,seb coe,peter elliot,Michael palin,that shopping maul,forget the name,on last vlog you didn't appear to respond to many comments, i did notice one of my comments disappeared it was just a gluten-free recipe for crumble with fruit.only because you said you couldn't have any apple&blackberry crumble, i noticed they do a blackberry pie..

We used to play on the walk other side of the cemetery and climb the top of the wall but was to scared to go in .
@@ralphtomlinson2461 .life was different back in the 70s i used to live in meersbrook ...but a friend lived near to the cemetary
the old architecture was much more detailed than the block boxes that the stack up on one another today. Modern architecture is just put up to make a profit with far less detail.

@@BeckandBeyond Yes, the detail was fantastic, which was true masonary stone cutting and skilled labour. In reality, today we lived in an uncaring world that way to fast paced as it leaves the poor people behind. I love the old english architecture it's some of the best in the world and England is a stunning place viewing wise as it has everything.
Georgian architecture is my absolute favourite. I love the symmetry and clean line I would happily live in a Georgian townhouse 😁

If that's of interest to you Becks, there was a chimpanzee that delivered crisps around Sheffield at one bit. It was called max, I think some old newsreel exists.

When I moved here to Sheffield they had a stuffed bear on show and some smaller bare pits that got filled in you think the big was cruel l o l x

Perculate,ferment,marinade, enthuse.i once soaked whiskey with strawberries 🍓 for 6months for a Christmas treat,it was awful to bitter,that was done on a recommendation, i think a cherry liquor might of sufficed. I think the whole perpose was to eat the strawberries & drink the whiskey, but im not sure now,maybe i should of thrown the strawberries..
And that sounds SO good whiskey and strawberries 😋 6 months in the waiting you must have been really disappointed! Xx
