This is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite songwriters. The depth it reaches is remarkable, covering an expansive emotional and narrative landscape. Inspired by a Native American legend, the song unfolds through a love story, a troubled marriage, and a violent murder, all bound by a place of profound beauty: Lake Marie. The lake becomes a timeless witness to fleeting human interactions, holding each moment in its silent embrace. The way the song shifts from one theme to another, yet maintains cohesion, is pure genius. John Prine’s lyrics, simple yet profound, blend folksy wisdom with a raw authenticity that adds immense depth. It’s hard to imagine how such a song came to life in the first place.

I grew up on the lake hes singing about. I never knew the history, i just found this song. Yknow, i always thought the lake was somewhat haunted. People died on the Chain of Lakes all the time, but Marie was the one where they fished up body parts of a jet skier who was chopped up beneath a boat. Marie was the one id heard about tubers drowning in after they fell into the water every other summer. Lake Marie is the lake that drowned my father. I suppose ill have to be sure to go home again, and stand by those peaceful waters and hear this song for him.
The melody, metaphor and poetry on this song is just beautiful, perfect and extremely powerful. The story is visual, you can feel the breeze, hear those sausages and hear the dogs. The interpretations are endless and deep to the core. I see life, love and death on the three verses… it’s just an epic work of art. Thanks.

We met and married in Chicago in 1970. John has been with us almost from the start both live and recorded. If we survive the pandemic, I’m so sad John won’t be with us on the other side. Bless you for making our lives richer
Saw John 3 times last year with my wife, who found John 45 years ago in a little joint in Chicago while she was 19 years old, in nursing school. I met her 2 years later, and have been a fan as well ever since. Somehow he just gets better and better every year. Saw him a few weeks ago in Toronto. Simply phenomenol.
For forty plus years we have gone to John's concerts when at all possible - sometimes alone and sometimes all of us - we think of him as an important part of our family.
This singer songwriter literally stands alone with his ability to brilliantly paint the picture of his songs and then have us think about the story. The story in this song is a masterpiece that has many twists and turns.
I agree about this song...'A masterpiece with twists'...but what are the twists exactly, at the end?...I am stumped....I listened to it a few times and still didn't come to a solid conclusion...What do you suppose the ending is about?....I thought they must have committed suicide together......Their way of 'saving their marriage'...?.....'We gotta go now'?......It's gotta be that......The waters are peaceful, so it wasn't a storm...or were they attacked by intruders...?.....That makes sense....The narrater is telling the story, so did he survive?....Were the two bodies the sisters?......Secretly in love with the same man, so they fought?......Possibilities.....Or is it supposed to be up the the individual to decide for themselves?....Ok, somebody help me figure it out, tee..... Stumped.....I remember parts of this song from way back, though......Cheers....
Eden Black Throughout the song Prine sings phrases from the 60’s rock classic, “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen. “Oh baby” and “We gotta go now” are all through the song. The lyrics of “Louie Louie” were famous for being impossible to discern and there were parts that sounded quite vividly sexy. This made it an even greater dance song!! “3/4 of the way through the song he sings about his wife nestled up close to him humming a few bars of “Louie Louie” as she is falling asleep. They’ve just had sex. “up against the shores of Lake Marie” a line he sings earlier when he first meets her at Lake Marie and they have sex “up against the shores of Lake Marie.” Both times, the line is sung with intensity and a kind of staccato beat, (clearly the climaxing part of their love making.) Both times he follows with “Oh Baby!” I never got a sense of them committing suicide or anything close to that. There is the part where the two people are found dead in the woods near Lake Marie. Their bodies are so disfigured that they can’t be identified. And in the beginning of the song the two little white girls are found by people from an indian tribe in the woods by Lake Marie. So that’s my take on this oh so beautiful song written and performed by the great John Prine. I sure do miss him and I hope he is “standing by peaceful waters. ☮️❤️☮️
@@maryannbrown5762 I am not sure that the "aw baby" and "we gotta go now" have anything to do with Louie Louie reference. JP used the phrases in other songs as well. there are several disconnects in this song. For example, how did the Indians know that the names of the 2 babies they discovered? if there were cars at the scene of the crime seen on the 6 o'clock news, the 2 bodies were definitely not the bodies of the babies discovered by the Indians. maybe the 2 bodies were the singer and his sweetheart and this is what JP meant about "their love was slammed"."I guess poetic license could allow the singer to sing about his own tragic death. maybe we shouldn't try to read into this masterpiece too much. but every time I hear JP shout our "Marie!" it feels like a knife going through my heart. I guess great art is something that everyone can relate to in their own way. and this is great art. JP was naturally gifted. nothing methodical or studied or calculated. He wrote his best music almost unwillingly under time pressure.I think he avoided it because it was such an intense experience and he always feared that it would not be liked. it just came out of him like a geyser. ......so everyday simple, but unbelievably sensitive.
Every time I watch this video it makes me cry thinking about what a loss he was probably one of the most awesome ever so happy I got to see him at one of his last concerts ❤️❤️❤️
I was going to leave the same exact comment. Every time I hear it..... Y'know, John Prine says every song is a love song - sometimes love just doesn't work out.
Loved Prine years and years ago I went to visit my brother from another mother up in the Chicago area. He was a music nut like me. I ask where we're going to catch live music. I think he new everyone within a 100 mile radius of wherever he was at. So he says let me call a guy.. getting off the phone he names some small club his buddy he called managed the place and said you 2 need to hear this guy..some postman was turning out some fine tunes. I thought we'd go to a blues club but after hearing Prine and him sittin with us a little while I was dadgum impressed. Not just his music he was just a nice humble man. Sure wish we had smartphone's back then. I got to meet Buffet in very similar consequences in a little place in Atlanta. But anyways we all get old.
Holey Moley: That is a real place!! I am not kidding: look at any map or google map I've passed there many times I've seen JP live x5 since 1977 in Toronto. But this is my favourite video. I've been to that place of the Lakes!! Several times. I regret not getting out with Wifey and baring my heart as JP did. RIP Mr Prine.
Wow. What a blessing seeing him at red rocks before his passing. Last song he played and danced around his guitar he was truly alive. Will always be missed.
Perhaps he'll rename the song to " I finally got to Heaven " ... You've made a good point Jeff such a sad sad thing and it makes me appreciate all the small things a lot more now. Cheers and peace from British Columbia Canada.
To say that John was one of my most coveted souvenirs, would be an understatement.to have john prine on reserve for any emotional event is a must have in your heart
I absolutely adore this song, bar none. It is fabulous. JP is such a great storyteller and this is no let down. "OH, baby, we gotta go now." God bless you John Prine
Sometime in the early 2000s my wife and I saw John Prine perform this song at Berklee College in Boston. I suspect it was one of the first times he performed the song. It was a small auditorium and I believe some, if not all, of the players with him were Berklee students. The lead guitar player was incredible. He was a kid. He played an incredible bit at then end of the song, and I believe he went on to be the musician in the gray suit that played many more concerts with Prine. The kid sure could play the guitar and I think Prine was surprised at the Berklee concert. Life is interesting.....
My wife died a few months after John Prine died. I still remember us, my wife and I, sitting in the auditorium at Berklee and hearing this song for the first time. As I listen to it again, I still reach out and feel my wife's hand holding mine as we listened to this marvelous strange mixture of music and word, poetry. Oh, baby, we've got to go now....
He’s with Johnny ,Waylon and the rest of our true rebels who weren’t afraid to speak the truth, thanks for giving us great music, you’ll be missed mate, rip
About 2 years ago, I discovered this song. I got stuck in an OCD loop, playing it over and over. I must have played it 30 times in a row that day. A new record for me!
"Know what blood looks like in a black and white video? Shadows..." Wow. Gotta be kidding me. That is legendary. RIP pops and thank you for raising me with this man RIP John.
John Prime, thank you for your gift and love of music and songs. You brought much joy and peaceful waters in your life. Forever grateful my sister knew of you back in your Chicago days. What a gift you were. R.I.P. John 🕊️🕊️🕊️
There has been many, many excellent musicians doing this genre of music without reaching the heights of this man, he really was something special, the world is poorer without him but oh boy, did he leave his mark.
John Prine is not only a fantastic singer/songwriter but invited also 2 super stringplayers - amazing the trio play at the end - thanks for sharing your heavenly songs ! Bless all of you
The first time hearing this rendition of this song, tears. I realized I had a man crush on him and I love this man. Sleep well legend. Most people will never know who he was, and that's sad. That being said I know how great this man was is or what he did. Maybe that makes it even better.
Many years ago on a long late night drive from the Kingdom of Kerry to West Cork I heard this song for the first time & it is now an eternal black & white movie in my head - and you know what black & white looks like, shadows. Made it ‘home’ safe to Baltimore transfixed by the story & the mood. Ended the night staring out onto peaceful waters, happy to have chad the privilege. Magic man & tragic song.
My sense of humor has saved me more than a couple of times in my life," Prine says. "If I can make myself laugh about something that I should be crying about, that's pretty good." Rest in peace JP
I hope John Prine is standing by peaceful waters. And my name is Marie!

You helped me to be a softer soul, John. See ya at The Tree of Forgiveness Club.
Is having a soft soul even a good thing? Sounds terrible
Amen bro
@@ImNotJoshPotter Yes--a soft soul--protected by a hard head, sharp eyes, and a resilient heart.
See ya when I get to heaven John, Be nice to talk again.
Every time I watch this video it makes me cry thinking about what a loss he was probably one of the most awesome ever so happy I got to see him at one of his last concerts ❤️❤️❤️
Look at how much fun John is having!!! Truly...John Prine was the real deal. Rest in peace friend.
My heart is hurting something fierce tonight. You will be missed.
Three guys with guitars sure did put on a helluva show that night ! One I will never forget !
I imagine that when John got to Heaven the saints handed him a big acoustic guitar and said "Let's Play".
God bless John Prine. I feel so lucky that I got to hear his music.
This song inexplicably makes me cry. Christ I love it.
I was going to leave the same exact comment. Every time I hear it..... Y'know, John Prine says every song is a love song - sometimes love just doesn't work out.
@@mrphil2557 quite simply, he is right.
Yeah, why is that?? The cryin' part, I mean.
why cry? in the face of pure genuine love, people cry sometimes
we all have this common desire for peaceful waters.
Holey Moley:
That is a real place!! I am not kidding: look at any map or google map
I've passed there many times
I've seen JP live x5 since 1977 in Toronto.
But this is my favourite video.
I've been to that place of the Lakes!! Several times.
I regret not getting out with Wifey and baring my heart as JP did.
RIP Mr Prine.
Rip John Prine and Steve Goodman. I love your music very, very much ❤️🇺🇸
Wow. What a blessing seeing him at red rocks before his passing. Last song he played and danced around his guitar he was truly alive. Will always be missed.
I knew who this Man was : He was Honest & above all else: KIND.
So sad to lose John....he will be missed. He can sing "When I get to Heaven" for real now💔
Perhaps he'll rename the song to " I finally got to Heaven " ... You've made a good point Jeff such a sad sad thing and it makes me appreciate all the small things a lot more now.
Cheers and peace from British Columbia Canada.
I cry every time I hear and watch this video. I wish I was there in person. I’ve probably seen the video over 100 times. RIP JP
6:45.................................. oooohhhhh baby, we gotta go now. It doesn't get any better that this.
To say that John was one of my most coveted souvenirs, would be an understatement.to have john prine on reserve for any emotional event is a must have in your heart
Lake Marie...a love story encapsulated in a great human tragedy and irony...of death while standing by peaceful waters. Godspeed, John Prine.
It’s cool he found these band members…they all be tight.
Hope they have music where you are, John, so you can lighten their load as you lightened ours. Peace.
I absolutely adore this song, bar none. It is fabulous. JP is such a great storyteller and this is no let down. "OH, baby, we gotta go now." God bless you John Prine
A musician friend of mine once said of John's music, "It is art to deceive art to write such powerful music that is so simple." How true.
Storytelling at it's best!! RIP Mr. Prine!!!
My love, a dedicated Bluegrass musician, environmentalist and fisherman, died in November of pneumonia and Leukemia. Bless you, John. Peace.
He play’s guitar like it’s attached to him.Sorry he is gone but glad to have the music and videos.
A true gentleman, with a beautiful spirit. ☝️💜 Rest in peace John. 🫶
Both are giants of poetry and song writing. Seems like John might be kinder. I donate to his sponsered charity annually. Thisle farms.
Those young musicians were so good and so lucky to play with John Prine!
Ain't it funny how a true voice from a true heart can tear you up inside.
God I love this song because some of the happiest times in my life were... standing by peaceful waters. Thanks John.
Missing our dear John Prine today. Here after listening to Nanci Griffiths doing your songs and missing her angelic voice. RIP Nanci.
Jesus Mary Joseph please be with this genius musician, let him not suffer . We love him so much.
He passed away because he poured out his soul
@@steveseefeld3653 John Prine lives forever in our hearts. Love like it is eternal.
Ilove and miss John.
I have listened to this song over and over for hours. I just cannot get enough of John Prine.
About 2 years ago, I discovered this song. I got stuck in an OCD loop, playing it over and over. I must have played it 30 times in a row that day. A new record for me!
"Know what blood looks like in a black and white video? Shadows..."
Wow. Gotta be kidding me. That is legendary. RIP pops and thank you for raising me with this man
RIP John.
Almost ten minutes of pure bliss , and the trio of guitar solos at the the end Ahh baby what can I say 👌
Only singer I ever got to meet and actually hang out with just for a few , greatest most coolest people you ever wanted to meet.
Shadows! Just pure poetry.
ONLY PRINE WRITES SONGS SUCH AS THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!! GENOUS AT WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Prime, thank you for your gift and love of music and songs.
You brought much joy and peaceful waters in your life.
Forever grateful my sister knew of you back in your Chicago days.
What a gift you were.
R.I.P. John 🕊️🕊️🕊️
The world is even sadder today but your music will always live on ..RIP John.
He’s up there with the greats!! May they all live on forever❤❤❤❤
There has been many, many excellent musicians doing this genre of music without reaching the heights of this man, he really was something special, the world is poorer without him but oh boy, did he leave his mark.
Our world is better because of John Prine rip friend 💜
Bob Dylan’s favorite. We’ve lost a lot of the greats over the years, but this one hurts. Rest easy, John.
No comparison between John and Dylan. They’ve both amazing. I love Handsome Johnny though ❤
One of the best versions of this classic. Even John looks pleased at the end--he knows they all nailed it!
He was laughing with his band mates because he had broken a string.. funny moment
RIP. Thank you for passing by planet earth and blessing us with your gift.
Sent shivers down my back!
Oh, John Prine, so great, we were so lucky to have him at all.
Damn John Prine just gets better as the years grow longer. Praying for his health...fight John. The world isn't ready to say goodbye.
Mary Bogden No we weren’t ready to say goodbye just yet. I read the news @ 3:00a.m. this morning, had me a good, sad cry 😢💔
John is the REAL DEAL. I've listened to John's perfect lyrics for 30 years never gets old! GOD bless you John
Kim Lieb
god i miss him. my mother and i used to sing his songs in the car when i was young
BEEN A FAN SINCE THE EARLY 70'S ... I AM OLD NOW AND WELCOMETHOSE PEACEFUL WATERS ...........

Yes Gerry, there's something that JP possessed that resonates to our Celtic souls..... Never gone...❤🇮🇪
Resting now by "Peaceful waters." Thank you for your poetry.
My sense of humor has saved me more than a couple of times in my life," Prine says. "If I can make myself laugh about something that I should be crying about, that's pretty good."
Rest in peace JP
