Prince has played with several different versions of backup bands…some lineups had official names like The New Power Generation (NPG)…others include The Revolution and 3rdEYEGIRL. Other lineups had no name but, played with him (usually) in support of a couple of albums/tours and then he’d switch it up. My personal favorite is the lineup that supported him during the Sign O’ The Times era featuring Sheila E. on drums. Check out the concert film of the same name and you’ll see why.
I LOVE Prince and was VERY saddened when he was murdered. The man was a GENIUS. There's never been another like him and I'm pretty sure there never will be. Rest In Peace Prince. I'm 62

You are right. You can't put Prince in a box of ANYTHING except talent and skill. He flows through genres on a regular basis. This IS the song Salt N Pepa reference in their song "Shoop." The Prince albums were his band doing Prince music. The New Power Generation albums were his band doing THEIR music, with Prince doing whatever they needed him to do. The NPG "Exodus" album is my favorite of the 3 I have (which I think is all they came out with).
If you want more fun, tounge-in-cheek Prince, "Face Down" is hard to beat. Then check out Morris Hayes telling the story behind the song. MTV played the shit out of this one though, obviously with the "MF" parts censored out with a trademark Prince yelp. If you were there at the time and were spoon fed the censored version, it's almost jarring to hear the original version as recorded. In some ways though that yelp was even more effective - and humorous.
