Yours was the first of a few resources I found to tackle this $$$$$$ job. Got it done PERFECTLY!!! Thanks for your narration of what was being done. 93 1500I (Base) 48k mi.
Thank You, I have the new belts and new tensioners, gonna replace that bottom coolant hose and the tensioner springs while I'm there. Mines a '91 Lehman trike w/ 100k on it. Thanks for the chance to watch it done before I tackle it!
Note that at 30:38 in the video we see a perfect example of how timing of your engine goes out of whack a bit with a stretched, old, deteriorating TIMING BELT. The smaller center wheel (showing crank position) is positioned absolutely correctly with the L1F line on center wheel right perfectly in line with arrow mark to right in the case. Note that the right large cam wheel's mark position (UP) is off by 2+ degrees. This is less serious than it looks because there are two rotations of the larger outer wheels for every rotation of the center wheel. So the effective timing error is about 1+ degrees. This timing discrepancy between the crank and cams controlling intake and exhaust valves mean this engine is currently running in slightly retarded mode, sometimes used on race machines. This is caused by the stretching of the belt. The new belts should fix this pronto, bringing all back to spec. I have not seen a broken belt, but I've seen timing off on many, as here.
Thanks for this, good job. When doing a new start up after standing a long time, it is a good idea to turn the engine over with the no choke. Doing this will hopefully prevent the engine from firing and give the oil a chance to get to all those places it has drained from over the winter. After doing this a few times, you can then use the choke and let the engine fire up and run - though don't rev it at this point.
This is a great tip. I do something similar when changing oil on newer cars. On most of them if you hold the accelerator to the floor when starting the ECU goes into "clear flooded engine mode" where it won't actually fire but the engine will crank. This allows the oil pump to do its thing and fill the empty oil filter so you don't run dry during the first couple seconds. My wing has reverse and I noticed you can hit the starter with the engine kill switch in the off position and I think this does the same thing to "prime" the motor with oil.
Great video, love how you took your time, ask questions and got your answers and got a great ending. Little long but informative. Great video two 👍 👍 up!!!
I bought a GL 1500 for $500 cash. I have learned alot... such as DOT 4 brake fluid tones into a crystal, gel, and tarnish. All of which are a pain to deal with. I've had the bike for a year and I am still working off and on, on it. Carbs were bad fuel diaphragm and pretty much everything rubber was bad. The LED lights I put on work great though. Now I just need to put the time belt on and synchronize the carbs and pull the rear master brake cylinder off one more time and it should be ready to go.
Dude you sound like William Defoe lol. Thanks for the vid. I have a 1999 Gl 1500 with 41 thousand on it and will be changing the belt due to age of the rubber. Bike runs great it’s just proactive maintenance
Very nice. You kept a calm even keel during the whole process. Sort of a Mahatma Gandhi type of mechanic. No bloody knuckles, spilled coolant, smeared loctite or long string of expletives. Nothing like me.
did you use red loctite on the sparkers and tension pulleys? goldwing docs says this is a must but i am leery of using red loctite on pretty much anything
What coolant did you use? Wingdocs sends me to Amazon with Honda coolant but by the time you buy 4 quarts it's over $60. Anything cheaper but just as good? Thank you for the video. I'm doing this next week on my (new to me) 1997. It has 110k miles on it and I'm not sure it's ever been done. I'm terrified to ride it for fear of the belt breaking.
just did mine last summer.....and now im getting a clunky noise up front above 1500 rpm i dont like......i should have replaced tension pulleys i think. btw....i used the same web site to do mine, lol
You missed the point then. Honda says 10 years or 60k miles... if you're at 77k km, you're probably still running the original belts. Change them before your engine craps out!
I did this and left the plugs in because I felt there was less chance of the camshaft / crankshaft turning. Thanks for the video

@@dennisalex3655 Many oil filters have instructions that tell you to fill the oil filter with oil before installing it.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your work!
A+ mechanic skills, cool and steady.

I just picked up an old 89 with 38k on it, and will be doing this because of age too. Great to see it done, not just reading the instructions.

"Say a little prayer and look at the website" lol nice. About to do this on my 93 with 85k. Thanks for the vid

Nice job on the video you took time to explain the job you where doing. i'm gettig ready to do this on my 1995 gold wing it has 55,000 on it
Did a great Job! 🇨🇦 Love the explanation! 👍
great video, thank you!

My friend, you do not understand what's going on at 31:33, the belt has stretched, that's all.

going to burn up the water pump ..
I have a 99 with 47 k (77,000kms). She is running well right now so dont think I want to do this anytime soon.l

Will be doing this to mine very shortly, outside. Expecting a lot of swearing.
