The irony of going to a mobile games platform to avoid microtransactions
TinyFolks, Grand Mountain Adventure, Rallycar 3
What a time to be alive
Even though I am not using any apple products today, I used to own iPod touch when iPhone 3g was somewhat new.
I am sad where mobile gaming made the misteps to all free to play, all gacha, all whaling. Earlier iOS gaming was mostly free demos, 1-9€ games depending on quality in display. Angry Birds for one was a big deal because it was a full quality simple game for 1€, it was not free but it was next best thing for game without adverts or more BS after you paid, and for the time Angry Birds made lots of money, and spinoff games.
I wished that nintendo charging 10€ and having a demo of Mario Run was going to push a portion of the indistry with nintendo back to this style of premium mo- no wait players hated being asked for 10€, and even nintendo just pushed several gacha games as their phone game portfolio.
I am glad apple arcade exists. I am not a customer for it and never will be but it's existence is a pocket of lost chances for mobile gaming.
Single player console games have micro transactions now lol
You didnt play Diablo Immortal 😅😅
I find it ironic how back in the day we used the term arcade to describe a game designed to eat your money and nowadays the term arcade is used to describe games that aren’t designed to eat your money.
Originally "arcade" described the building, an arcade is a series of arches. At some point it became popular to create amusement arcades with games set up along the walls between arches.
Achievements in Apple games have been a thing since 2010. September of 2010 is when Apple introduced "Game Center" which is the universal achievement system Apple uses for games on their platforms.
Sonic Dream Team takes me back to the Rush days, when the handheld Sonic games managed to outdo the home console entries with creativity, ingenuity, and amazing game design.
Yeap the Sonic Advance series were known for their innovative direction and fun game mechanics.
Miss Rush and Advance. Wish Sega would go back to
Another vote for rush and advance for being amazing and trying new things.
My favorite was sonic rush
I noticed that you can get more stable framerates, if you set the AppleTV to 1080p when gaming. It doesn't downsample, but actually render them in 1080p instead, like on a computer.
I hope one day they put Fantasian on other platforms. The amount of passion put into it and being 60+ hours.. it's deserves so much more love and attention
Fantasian is fantastic and if you don’t have access to an Apple device, I think it’s actually on steam
@@phillipalleva-cox3903 Unfortunately it is not.. I just looked 😭 But I hope it doesn't get stuck on apple arcade forever because I would love to play it!
Out of curiosity, I looked up the voice cast of TMNT: Splintered Fate.
Leonardo is voiced by his 3rd VA from the 2012 series, but he's the only reprise. Yuri Lowenthal voices Mikey, Dale Inghram is Donnie, and Roger Craig Smith is Raphael. Other VAs include Dawn Bennett (Nobody), Melanie Minichino (April), Ben Lepley (Casey), Matthew Yang King (Shredder) and Gwendoline Yeo (Karai).
Woah Spiderman and Batman as these turtles that’s hard I knew I recognized one of those voices somewhere
You know, with how widely hated microtransactions are you'd think the fact that Apple Arcade doesn't have them would get spread out more widely.
the video above demonstrates why. He even said he never gave it a second look because he just assumed it was a micro transaction haven as well. Just gotta do any amount of research before hand but most people don’t.
The only thing I can say for Apple Arcade is when you have a free trial don’t cancel it even if it says it will still work after the cancellation it won’t it will end it right there on the day you end it.
Yeah I made that mistake and cancelled my free trial after 2 hours thinking I'd still have access to it 😭😭
I tried to activate my three months trial the other day but it requires I fill in a credit card information and I don’t have a credit card how am I going to activate my trial membership?
@@juiceala you're not lol
@@juicealaYou can't do that. Apple requires a card so they can charge you if you leave auto renewal on
I say this with no hyperbole, Sonic Dream Team is the closest thing we’ve received resembling a Sonic Adventure 3. It’s so good, and easily the best Sonic I’ve played this year.
I'd say Sonic 06 is pretty much Sonic adventure 3
Sonic 06 is definitely the closest
SA4then
I have Apple Arcade since it’s launch (it’s part of AppleOne) and it’s a really great service!
John, don’t know if you tried the following la but if not, you should definitely give them a try:
- Grindstone
- What the car?
- What the golf?
- Shovel Knight Dig
- Monument Valley 1 & 2
- Bleak Sword
And don’t forget that those fantastic games are also available on the service:
- Dead Cells
- Slay the Spire
- Gris
- Thumper
Gonna check these out cheers:^)
Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls is definitely worth playing for the lore. It's a wet dream just seeing characters from all the different eras of the franchise interact with each other. I'm actually trying to gather people to pester Konami into porting it to either consoles or Steam so others may experience it.
I'm going through Harmony Of Despair again after some years, and I'd love to try Grimoire eventually.
@@NinjaPhooka I played Harmony of Despair years ago. I want to play Grimoire as well, but Apple products aren't cheap.
Im sure Apple unfortunately has it locked down for awhile. I think that may be the most annoying thing about Apple Arcade. They get some real cool high profile stuff but it is just locked to their platform and goes unnoticed by most of the gaming world.
@@ComicCrossing The exclusivity contract should expire soon as they last up to 3 years. I'd love to play Grimoire of Souls on my Switch :)
The adult swim kart racer is legitimately great. Also these games are especially great with a controller grip like the razer Kishi.
I know you mentioned about there not being a fan, you got the 3rd gen Apple TV 4K. The 1st and 2nd gen Apple TV 4K’s both had a fan and heat sink installed however from my understanding the fan and heat sink’s were removed to lower costs and make it smaller as many people buying an Apple TV 4K were only using it for streaming and the A series chips have gotten much more efficient so decoding heavy 4K HDR streams became less of an issue.
only cheaper, its same size and shape.
@@sly2792004 I have both a 2nd and 3rd gen 4K and it’s smaller in all three dimensions(height, width, and length) as well as lighter
Apple TV 4K 2nd vs 3rd gen(technical specifications)
Height: 1.4 in vs 1.2 in
Width: 3.9 in vs 3.66 in
Length: 3.9 in vs 3.66 in
Weight 15 ounces vs 7.3/7.5 ounces(Ethernet model slightly heavier)
Storage: 32 or 64 gb vs 64 or 128 gb
(Note Ethernet and thread boarder router only available on the 128 gb model)
One Apple Arcade game I absolutely loved to play back when I got a 1 month subscription was Pinball Wizard. Seems like there’s a way bigger selection there now than when I was subbed though~
The fact that he called Rouge and Cream "this one" and "this one"
While I have all the latest consoles, I still end up using my AppleTV or stream my phone to my TV for Apple Arcade. Its just great for quick dips in and out of games, where I use my consoles for longer deeper experiences...
Any favorite games?
Same. What The Car and What The Golf have taken so much of my time. One of my favorite game series now.
And now that they added Dreamlight Valley, my wife and I have been playing that a ton
Apple Arcade is criminally underrated
Thank you for this video! I have been skeptical about the Apple Arcade after recently hearing about it and seeing the 3 months offer. After this video it made me relaxed and open to signing up for it lol. Great video. I’m excited to play that 2k and turtles game!
Finally a nicer thumbnail purple man!!! Keep it up 😂
Did John really not know who Rogue and Cream are? 😂😂
I refuse to believe.
😅
For someone as into games as he is, it seems impossible.
People always used to make fun of Sonic's innumerable "friends", but Rouge and Cream are hardly obscure, peripheral characters.
I barely remember them from the advance games, and I'm about his age lol
Fantasian is actually pretty damn good. Way better than I thought it would be.
10:52 In a few weeks World of Demons won't be available any more.
Great video jon
Samurai Jack and Ocean horn 2 were my favorites, actually felt like a real games. Perfect for long car rides and flights, on ipad with controller and no WiFi.
While we all like Newswave, stuff like this is where you are at your best. Always fun to see you take stuff apart.
As a full time student with part time work study job, I haven’t had nearly as much time to play games on console. Most of my gaming the past few months had been on my phone playing Apple Arcade games like Slay the Spire and Downwell. They’re addictive rogue-likes that I can play in between classes and work on my phone and the amount of time I’ve put into them have payed off the service for me.
You need to try What the Golf! One of my favorite Apple Arcade game experiences in recent memory.
i have an iPhone but I do not have apple arcade. Every once in a while i spot a game that looks like something I would play but turns out the only way to play it is with an Apple Arcade subscription, no option just to buy outright. I don't know if this applies to everything in the Apple Arcade library but certainly the few that I looked at.
I love you calling those characters "this one" and "this one"
Grindstone, Slay the Spire, and Stitch are my favorite Apple Arcade games. If you haven’t done the Monument Valley games they’re on the service too.
They should bring back the iOS version of Bioshock onto this.
i like the look of this one and this one in sonic dream team.
Bro i literally started my 6 month trial early this month for sonic, prob same for many. Im not even playing that now though. Just been nonstop playing hello kitty island adventure lmao
You should have used a Stadia controller, would have been ironic
I played oceanhorn 2 in like 2019 on the Apple Arcade and it was really well done
Can you give your thoughts on the completionist
I don’t really get the surprise at the visuals? The chip in the Apple TV way outclasses the tegra x1 in the switch and all the major engines support it pretty well.
The only issue i have the Apple Arcade that once a game goes out of the AA you loose everything plus the achievements too which sux
Don’t beat me up for asking this question but will my Google Stadia controller work with Apple TV 4K ?? 😅
💀👌🏼
Didn't they release an update before discontinuing Stadia so that the controllers could be connected via Bluetooth to PC and other devices? Maybe try it when you can
It should given I did it with my MacBook Pro and iPad.
hi Spawn Wave
I’ll probably try it next year
The A15 in Apple TV 4K is not full A15. It's binned A15 with 1 disabled e-core. It's 5 core.
You should try Horizon Chase 2!
Apple Arcade turned my new iPhone into a gaming handheld. It’s filled a void in my life, as the Switch just isn’t pocketable enough for me. Highly recommend!
Finally, i thought u forgot about this.
Air twister has been on osn and xbox for over a month for your info spawnwave
Bruh left the best titles indie out of my f*ckin Apple Arcade, *yes its the will smith reference
You're the Apple TH-camr now
If he throws in more clickbait titles and more Switch 2 videos, he’ll be just like you. Definitely has to throw in a lot of videos where he rambles about a bunch of nothing 10 minutes straight to be on your level though.
@@Jawwaad1111 all he has to do is not speak to humans and move back to his mother's and he'll be just like you..
@@Jawwaad1111
Touch pubes
@@tacituskillgore7437 Wow. Such a come back. You definitely put me in my place. Lmfao
@@Jawwaad1111 they did, cry about it lol
That turtles game looks really gd very surprised
I heard somewhere that Fantasian is coming to other platforms.
Monster Hunter stories is also on Arcade as well.
I'm surprised he didn't play Shovel Knight Dig
try out Ghost Trick! I thought I remember Apple adding that at some point...
The World of Demons game looks cool
Can you use the backbone on iPhone for this ?
Yep! 100%
@@dLifeHD did they get the back bone to work on the iPhone 15 or did they release a new one?
@@Derek_Dkickz They released a new version 2, though I think the version 1 USB-C now works on both iOS and Android too. But if you’re in the market for a backbone definitely get the V2 as it works with cases as well.
Apple Arcade is actually pretty decent. I didn’t pay for it individually but did the Apple One bundle for music, iCloud, and fitness, so I got it. I had a decent amount of fun with it on my iPad.
What I love the most about Apple Arcade, I play the games on my Mac in Max settings and they run great ❤
Fantasian and TMNT both look like games I'd enjoy a lot. Apple could have a potential hit here if they upgrade the Apple TV hardware and promote gaming as more prominent feature on it.
Other noticeable games: Disney dream valley, football manager touch. It’s becoming quite good
Some of those games look really fun. I just don't really want to play them on my phone yet don't want to go spend $150+ to play them on the TV. I would love to see some of these games reach other platforms eventually.
I am playing conker atm on rare replay on my xbox series s
Apple, the classic unnovator, innovates by releasing decent mobile games without microtransactions. Did not have that on my bingo card for this year.
17:06 a Metal Gear Solid game ?! but using the James Bond IP ?!
Apple Arcade is fantastic in its own right but especially if you take it for what it is and not what it isn’t which is what a lot of people do. Yes they’re short games. Yes they’re small games , Mostly there are some exceptions but mostly it’s relatively simple experiences but that doesn’t make them bad. A lot of them are just super fun.
Apple Arcade is a real gem, I feel like it gets overlooked.
World ef demons, that awesome platium exclusive 😮
I love apple arcade. There's some real gems in there that are just fun to pop on. I put in some real time into Sneaky Sasquatch and I'm able to sample games like Dead Cells.
There is one problem though with games 'leaving' the service like shows leaving Netflix. I''m hoping Grindstone isn't going to be one of them.
I actually played all of them, some of them are unique indies, and games from AAA dev/publisher that fly under the radar. And there are the + tittle too, freemium games without micro transactions. It’s sporadic and no hit tittle but for those without console and that price, it’s worth, but only for a year. Because eventually, you will running out of games, you may finished it in less than 5hr, or games leaving the service and the games being added aren’t always good…
Bro Apple Arcade and a backbone controller for your phone = Good Times
You have failed to play the Peter Griffin kart racer!! Banished to the shadow realm!!!
Glad more people are trying this service. Been on the service for a good while and this a good showcase of titles.
6:00
I mean Nintendo is the company that still hasn't figured out basics of online gaming so that's not shocking.
The ps 5 Controller is actually personable in Apple Store.
One of the best things about Apple Arcade is if you've fully consumed the Kool Aid and have various devices is playing these games on the new MacBook Pro or new iPad Pro 12.9. These games running at 4K, 120Hz, AND in HDR . . . it's just beautiful. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a game to not sleep on, Sonic Dream looks phenomenal and runs like absolute BUTTER. Gear Club looks awesome as well! I haven't tried it with my sim-racing rig yet, maybe I should give it a go. I wouldn't be surprised if it works.
God I wish they would remaster lost odyssey
I only got Apple Arcade for Hello Kitty Island Adventure lol
Anyone know what games those are during the intro, specifically at 00:31?
Where Cards Fall.
@@dLifeHD Sweet thank you!
I got a subscription a week or 2 ago.... not knowing my 2012 MacBook Pro OS can't update the OS further to play Sonic Dream Team. FML
It looks like a great service if you're really into mobile/light gaming and want something with more quality, but I'd never see myself sitting down to play it say at home or on my macbook over a console/PC. Their hardware has the power though, would love to see them license more mainstream games and give the dumpster fire that is mobile gaming a much-needed kick up the rear.
Warped kart racers is a good Mario kart style game on Apple arcade
Oh hey, I thought that Castlevania game died in early access, awesome. It was actually pretty fun.
I’ve had Apple Arcade since launch, and it’s been great overall. Don’t be fooled by Fantasian though, it seems simple at first but it’s not. Some of the boss fights are the toughest fights I’ve had in a turn based RPG.
the only thing i envy in the mobile wars
"I'd like to give a quick shootout to Josie Woah for helping me out with the multi-player after I barked orders to her during the after show. " - not John
Now try Netflix Ports in 2023 like Sonic Dash Prime, Sonic Mania, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition
Ah yes fan favorite sonic characters, such as “This One” and “This One” 😂😂😂
I remember playing it a couple of years ago.
Internet says it launched April 2nd 2021 on Apple Arcade.
@@Maryokutaizero yeah, now I think about it, I think I played it on arcade. 🫤
The biggest problem with the servers is even though these games don’t have micro transactions Most of the games in the service are still built with them in mind so it still has that micro transaction structure some of the games are just not playable without them.
I'm really glad to see a level headed take on Apple Arcade. I see a lot of gamers and Android users hating on it because its Apple. I'm also glad you showed the easiest entry which is the Apple TV. A huge misconeption is that you need an iPhone or iPad, you really don't. The Apple TV is quite affordable in comparison to gaming consoles and if you find a lot of games interesting on Apple Arcade or the App Store in general, I think buying an Apple TV for that purpose is as valid as buying a PS5 for PS exclusives.
Your using crapple?
Basedpple cry about it
Kinda sad that there are legitimate interesting ideas in there that won't make a ripple into public consciousness or the wider discourse because they are locked in this exoteric service.
Those 14.8 billion though, how much of it is actually microtransaction money, do we know? They take cuts from Fortnite, Candy Crush, all the big titles because they're in their store. Apple Arcade itself isn't a 14.8 billion business.
NGL Hello Kitty Adventure is kinda an AC killer unironically LMAO. It is way more fun and more "responsive".
Great video - didn't know they existed. Guess cause I'm a Android guy :)
I had Apple Arcade for free for 3 months when I bought my phone. I used it for like a week and forgot about it. Forgot to cancel and didn’t realize until after being charged twice.
They gotcha
Personal issue
Yeah this is the standard thing for subscriptions everywhere! They know this:
Of all these people that wanna use the trial, a certain percentage will forget to cancel it so they have to pay. That's "so easy money" for the companies. This is not just Apple. But Apple knows how this works based on all other subscriptions that got a free trial or a very very cheap first days/weeks/months.
I got 6 months free on Netflix when I bought my TV some years ago. I never watched so much and then I started tl pay the normal monthly fee. I watched Netflix maybe a few times a year and it was not worh those 120-150 dollar per year. I watch movies and TV shows on normal classic old school TV and also all these physical Blurays and DVDs.
So WHY are these companies putting so much energy and money on these subscription services? And why these low monthly fees? They want us to not own anything. And where does this come from? Just google "you should own NOTHING but be happy anyways"...
I love these physical copies so much!! I also love these steelbook editions but those cost more. It's nice art. And no subscription ⭐️
Would love to try Apple Arcade. Too bad i don't have an Apple device. Netflix Gaming ain't half bad though. Better version of GTA Trilogy than consoles and PC.
Now Netflix is getting GTA Trilogy and Sonic Mania. Who will win?
I’d like to see a version of the Apple TV with macOS. Apple could just call it the Mac micro.
The Mac Mini is basically that though. It’s just a bit bigger than the Apple TV
John has no respect for Rouge the Bat and Cream the Rabbit.
So Spawnwave, is Apple Arcade good enough to switch from a Samsung to an iPhone (context I been rocking a Samsung phone for like I think eight years by now)
If you do a lot of mobile gaming, then yes imo.
@@coolioam8137Only game I mostly play on my phone is Duel Links and sometimes Master Duel
