"And [surgical masks are] not actually that unusual of a sight in Japan..." Honey, I come from the future and I'm here to tell you that Japan has a lot more facemasks now... 😳
The story of the umbrella yokai, from what I learned in Japanese class, is that they can manifest from forgotten umbrellas. Someone forgets their umbrella for a long time, and the umbrella becomes alive, the handle becomes the foot, and it hops away to find someone who will never forget them. A pretty harmless yokai.
To me, it looks like the other girls are trying to help the slit mouth woman gain her confidence back in their own ways. The umbrella girl is helping her experience/find more joy, the kappa girl is giving self care advice (focused on eating cucumbers and sleep, but still), and the kitsune girl is improving her body image.
“I have a real soft spot for cyclops characters” Lavendertowne, an art genius “Well, considering I can only draw one okay-looking eye, this is agreeable”-me, an art idiot
Funfact: Kuchisake-Onna is actually really polite, if you tell her you’re in a hurry, she would let you go even if she wants you dead. And when she pulls down her surgical mask, and you say she’s pretty without looking scared, she will give you a blood stone as a gift :D
“She’s a woman with a surgical mask who comes to children” (something like that) Me: *looks at my mom during corona* Edit: my mom is a really nice person , this is just a joke.
I remember i heard about the Kuchisake Onna story and I never knew there were other options to confuse her and I was like "SO ITS JUST A LOSE-LOSE SITUATION!? IM GONNA DIE NO MATTER WHAT I DO!?"
🐢They are so gosh darn cute!! I wouldn't hesitate to call them all beautiful!! I would die but it would be worth it!!💮 Edit:Eating a cucumber is a vibe.
the kasa-obake(aka karakasa-obake or karakasa-kozo) is a tsukomogami, which is a type of yokai born from old, used-up objects. the kasa-obake was originally a paper parasol, hence why it has just one leg
the kitsune girl looks like a superhero, so i think you succeeded in making her less like every other modern kitsune adaptation. she looks really good!
Kitsune actually start out looking like normal foxes when they are born. They are immortal and as they grow they gain tails. Once they gain nine tails they turn white and the nine-tailed white kitsune are usually what modern people draw and know of.
There is actually a book series that have creatures that hack smiles into dead bodies with knives. The second one reminded me of it. (Book is called Days of Blood and Starlight and it’s the second book to the series)
Fun facts about kitsunes: The evil version of a kitsune is called a nogitsune When a kitsune becomes 100 years old, they can shape shift into a human There is a chance that the offspring of two kitsunes might be a human, and still have magic powers The only way to kill a kitsune is stabbing them through the heart Kitsunes get tails as they grow up (the limit is 9) Tails (from Sonic) might be a kitsune and in one of the Sonic games, one of his skins has 9 tails Kitsunes are good omens in Japanese culture and nogitsunes are bad omens When a kitsune shape shifts into a human, they are beautiful women or maybe a young teenage girl, they also have to hide their tails A kitsune (in human form) might reveal that they are a kitsune and show their tails when they are drunk or being reckless I researched the crap out of kitsunes
Kasa-obake (Japanese: 傘おばけ)[2][3] are a mythical ghost or yōkai in Japanese folklore. They are sometimes, but not always, considered a tsukumogami that old umbrellas turn into. They are also called "karakasa-obake" (から傘おばけ),[2][4] "kasa-bake" (傘化け),[5] and "karakasa kozō" (唐傘小僧). They are generally umbrellas with one eye and jump around with one leg, but sometimes they have two arms or two eyes among other features,[2][6] and they also sometimes are depicted to have a long tongue.[3] Sometimes, but rarely, they even have two feet, as depicted in the yōkai emaki such the "Hyakki Yagyo Zumaki".[1] In the Hyakki Yagyo Emaki from the Muromachi period, yōkai that appeared as umbrellas could be seen, but in this emaki, it was a humanoid yōkai that merely had an umbrella on its head and thus had a different appearance than that resembling a kasa-obake.[7] The kasa-obake that took on an appearance with one eye and one foot was seen from the Edo period and onwards, and in the Obake karuta made from the Edo period to the Taishō period, kasa-obake with one foot could often be seen.[7] In the yōkai sugoroku "Mukashi-banashi Yōkai Sugoroku (百種怪談妖物双六)" the Ansei era, a kasa-obake was depicted under the name "One-footed from Sagizaka (鷺坂の一本足, Sagazaka no Ippon Ashi)."[8] Among the many non-living or still object yōkai depicted in the "Hyakki Yagyo Emaki", only the umbrella yōkai can be seen to have remain well-known even after the Edo period,[9] and it is said to be the most well-known yōkai of an object.[7] They frequently appear in legends and caricatures,[7][10] and as opposed to how they are a yōkai that is unusually well-known, they do not appear in any eye-witness stories in folklore at all,[7] and it is not clear what kind of yōkai they are.[2] Literature about them are not accompanied by folktales, and thus they are considered to be a yōkai that appear only in made-up stories[10] or exist only in pictures.[7] After the war, there was also the interpretation that they were an existence that was on the same level as manga characters.[7] One possibility that has been thought of is that when Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai became popular in the Edo period, the story-tellers were requested to tell new stories and about yōkai that is not yet known throughout society, and thus they were a yōkai created by individuals.[11] For tools used in human life, there was the way of thought that, as months and years pass by and these tools become older, they have an ability to become apparitions. These are called tsukumogami, and some literature consider this yōkai to be one example of them,[3][12] but it has not been confirmed that there are any classical literature or classical essays that verifies this.[2] After the war, they became a representative character for depictions of obake and haunted houses,[2][4] and are frequently used as characters anime, manga,[3] and films that have a theme on yōkai,[5] and are also generally doodled by children.[2] In folktales, as an umbrella yōkai, in the Higashiuwa region, Ehime Prefecture, there is a story that a rain umbrella would appear in valleys on rainy nights, and those who see it would cower and not be able to move their feet.[7] Also, in Mizokuchi, Tottori Prefecture (now Hōki, Saihaku District), there is a yōkai called yūreigasa (幽霊傘, "ghost umbrella") that has one eye and one foot like the kasa-obake, but it is said that on days of strong wind, they would blow people up into the skies.[5]
I am calling the tired turtle girl Suphina, because it kinda sounds really pretty and foreign, and also because I got this scenario in my head that kinda goes like this: New girl: Hi! What’s your name? Suphina: Suph-*falls asleep on the desk* New girl: *poke* Suphina: Sorry, what’s the question?
Kuchisake Onna: "Am I pretty?" Me "Well everyone is beautiful in their own way so yeah. Have a nice day goodbye." Walks away. Her:??? Oh and I love the kitsune and I just love the folk lore of the kitsune!!!!
The story for the umbrella actually exists. Basically spirit's take over objects that have been horribly taken care of, misused, or just abandoned so that the items can like get revenge and crap. That story is actually the reasoning for a big festival in Japan where they burn all of their unused and abandoned dolls and crap its really interesting
Tsukumogami is another name for the first monster. When an objects survives for a long time, it can get this kind of presense. In Japanese folklore, these objects can be anything, an umbrella, a futonbed, a sandal... and on it's 100th birthday it will become sentient. I think I also read somewhere once that it's behavior depends on how you treated the object. Did you take good care of it or just toss it here and there. But I'm not sure.
From what I understand, a lot of the object monsters are lessons in taking care of your possessions, and the idea that objects remember their life. If you keep an old umbrella in good condition, it will be happy and not turn into a cruel monster in 100 years. If the object is trashed and forgotten, it absorbs that ill treatment and acts similarly if it comes to life in 100 years.
LavenderTowne I find your videos to be amazing. I've been drawing some cosplay ideas of European related plants and animals and mythical creatures to be as for next King Richard's Faire and I find this video to be inspirational, keep up the fabulous work.
The umbrella yokai is literally a neglected umbrella that falls into disrepair and gets so offended by it that it haunts you. This is not restricted to umbrellas pretty much anything can become this kind of yokai including houses if you don't take good care of them.
The first one reminds me of a pine tree so she shall be called Forest The kappa one, call her cucumber (there are kids called Covid, it’s not weird) or aqua to symbolise the water The next one, she shall be (insert Japanese word for ‘fox’)
1st girl! Looked like a mermaid 2nd girl! Looked like a normal woman 3rd girl! Looked like a turtle obsessed collage girl 4th girl! My favorite Yokai ;^;

I’m so happy that Yokai is getting the attention it needs! I’ve been obsessed with them since I was seven!!! 😆
the kitsune girl looks like a superhero, so i think you succeeded in making her less like every other modern kitsune adaptation. she looks really good!
スリットマウスウーマン is already adorable, in my opinion. I love her
I bet lavendertowne would love drawing Octavia
Don’t punish your art. It’s beautiful. You should be happy for your self. Your art and talent is a blessing.😇
Kitsune actually start out looking like normal foxes when they are born. They are immortal and as they grow they gain tails. Once they gain nine tails they turn white and the nine-tailed white kitsune are usually what modern people draw and know of.
I used to watch you when I was younger and you popped up in my recommendation again! 😂 💜💜
Noice! I like the pose you did for Slit Mouthed Woman because it looks like she's kneeling to be at face level with a child she's talking to
Kuchisake Onna: "Am I pretty....?" Me: *THROWS CANDY* ALSO ME: "CANDAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!" *RUNS*

"Am I pretty?"
"You're prettier than me, that much is for sure."
The slit mouth woman is so cute in your version😖💞💞💞
There is actually a book series that have creatures that hack smiles into dead bodies with knives. The second one reminded me of it. (Book is called Days of Blood and Starlight and it’s the second book to the series)
You NEED to do a part two please. There are so many more yokai that in my opinion are fun to draw as cute girls
These are beautiful yokais great job on work dork
Fun facts about kitsunes:
The evil version of a kitsune is called a nogitsune
When a kitsune becomes 100 years old, they can shape shift into a human
There is a chance that the offspring of two kitsunes might be a human, and still have magic powers
The only way to kill a kitsune is stabbing them through the heart
Kitsunes get tails as they grow up (the limit is 9)
Tails (from Sonic) might be a kitsune and in one of the Sonic games, one of his skins has 9 tails
Kitsunes are good omens in Japanese culture and nogitsunes are bad omens
When a kitsune shape shifts into a human, they are beautiful women or maybe a young teenage girl, they also have to hide their tails
A kitsune (in human form) might reveal that they are a kitsune and show their tails when they are drunk or being reckless
I researched the crap out of kitsunes
For the slit mouth woman I would say either "do you think you're pretty" or "why does it matter you're beautiful on the inside"
I love the story that goes wiht kuchisake onna...its one of my favorite Japanese horror legends.
The end picture of all the cute girls together looks like a friend group hanging out together after school 😅
This is the first video, this is how I watch lavendertowne daily
