Picked my e-Niro up on the 18th April and I just love it. I am getting just a tad short of 300 miles from a full charge (mixture of roads from motorways to narrow single track country roads).
Once Octopus installs my smart meter and I can take advantage of the GO tariff would mean that I can easily do South Devon to London for just £2 :-)

Carol Steele - Only has short test drives so far. 30mi yesterday and about 20mi today. Drove some of my most travelled paths. Reckon I’d be looking at a mean average of 3.5 to 3.9mi/kWh. Less when loaded up or full of people.
You are lucky to get one. I could not wait for the next batch to arrive. I bought a nissan leaf instead.

Great review! I live in Sweden and have now driven my e-Niro for 7700 km. Best car i’ve ever owned. Good build quality and fun to drive. Full spec model including led-headlights, deadspot warning, heated/ventilated seats, sunroof etc. here in Sweden.

We had used 25% charge since collection which was at 100%. 75 miles used on the trip since that last charge. So with that sort of driving that's a 300 mile range. I charged it up in town last night back to full and the gom was showing 289.
Absolutely loving the car. Plenty of space on board. Plenty of power for our needs. Comfortable. What's not to like?! 😊

A really well balanced and detailed review of the e-Niro. Having owned one since Mid-March we are really getting to like the car - Mrs. e-Niro uses it more than I do!..The steering isn’t the most communicative but I think this is a function of electric assist. The Top Gear/Grand Tour crowd love to bang on about this kind of thing but for the average driver like me I am perfectly happy that it steers accurately and easily. Our old Prius (now for sale) has electric assist and is similarly ’Nigel-Like’ - nice but not exciting. What will be interesting is when the RWD cars from VW and others start to appear. The opportunity there will be to make the car more ‘sporty' and appeal to the aforementioned petrol-head reviewers...but can the steering feel of a hydraulically assisted system be replicated in an electric system? A challenge for those brands who trade on those qualities. We are just about to set off for a 600 km round trip to Orleans for the weekend, destination charging at the hotel awaits. Great Video, great car - if only you could buy them (unless you were one of the lucky ones)
Rolling on neutral without regen brings you the best mileage because no extra energy transformation is needed to propel a car.
When breaking, regen is applied automatically to capture kinetic energy which otherwise be lost as heat.
Chasing best mileage you should avoid regen
Great, can't wait to see you do a comparison side-by-side with Kona Electric, compare specs and measurements (especially back seat leg room).. but would it possible to do a range test side-by-side (eg, two drivers driving together at same time), and maybe fully charge to 100% on both, and drive until each car gets down to 75% battery and see which car went further to extrapolate the full range?

Drive an eNiro yesterday for a couple of hours yesterday and another 45mins. today. Nigel yep, that makes sense. Not an exciting ride but that’s not what I need. It’s got its fair share of hard plastics inside. But you don’t spend your time tapping the trim as your driving. Tends to roll/sway a bit on country roads; but the car was empty. So may be more steady loaded..?
Seats are ok and will probably give a bit when worn-in. The steering wheel’s stitching is a bit rough on the thumbs. The drive selector has a nobbled edge, which makes it easy to grip & turn. I don’t know what setting is was in yesterday but it was more fun and the steering more responsive. Today it was in ‘ECO’ and I didn’t know how to change it. I stopped and fiddled but it stayed in ECO. Which still had plenty of oomph when needed but it felt a bit numb and the steering overly soft. Like wading through treacle on a hot day.
Easy to reverse, (first car I’ve driven with a reversing camera). So that’s a novelty which didn’t get used. Yes it was on but I just used the mirrors as usual. The sensors seemed overly sensitive. I backed into a garage and beeping was like 4am on Christmas morning, when your nephew has found the toy trumpet. I get out to check and there’s an 18”/45cm clearance, (measured it).
Control surfaces and buttons were a bit on the Hot Black Desiarto side. You press a black button and a lack light lights up black to let you know you’ve done it. It was a right day, so even with the lights on, the switches and buttons sort of melded into one. But i dare say get used to it. The front windows are are auto up & down. But you have to keep a finger on the switch to fully open or close the rear windows. On the plus side, the motors are smooth and almost silent. Same goes for the wipers. The spread of the front windscreen washers is good.
Only needed the brakes a few times, due to regen on 2-3. And once in an emergency. Brand new car with brand new brakes. It was an immediate cessation of forward progression. Seat belts worked too. A driver assuming there wouldn’t be another road user, me, on the other side of the blind bend.
The supplied Type 2 cable seems a bit short. Sorry, I didn’t measure it. On the other hand. You could plug the granny lead in in York and it would stretch to Dublin.
Why oh why, does a modern car, (the eNiro) not have blind-spot monitoring. And come on Kia, spec. the UK vehicles with LEDs all round. The Kona is a 150 quid cheaper and has both. Plus rear cross traffic alert.
DC Various Vids that’s a good sum up. For info the button to change drive modes in on the centre console below the drive selector. All in all I though it was a good solid car 😁👍
I like the regen hooked up to my brake pedal like on my Fiat. It feels more natural and it tells you the amount going back into the battery. The harder you brake the more energy goes back into the battery.
So the Niro EV is a typical family car that happens to be electric. Sounds good. Now, if I could only buy one.
You can but you'll have to pay a premium unless you you was early on the waiting list
Hi to you good review as usual accept to say having driven a new leaf I find it less dull and more modern not to mention it has better battery management and for me drives and feels a better quality product. As a result I have ordered one. I found the Kona a bit to small in the back and boot for me. Enjoy the videos keep it up.

The regen brake is also linked into sat nav and reacts accordingly becoming stronger as you approach junctions, secondly hold regen paddle fully and will regen even more powerfully than step 3, like Tesla regen power
I'd mention in your upcoming comparison with the Kona that the eNiro is 20cm longer so better rear passenger legroom and more cargo space in rear. If you open the bonnet/hood from memory the components are Hyundai badged on both. Is infotainment system same or slight differences between Kona & eNiro? I was waiting on eNiro but I jumped on EV train with Ioniq which I'm loving totally only about two weeks in so far. Good review though, was hoping you may do an eNiro after Kona review previously.

Very polished video. Great review. It's certainly my choice over the Kona, much more practical and the boot space on the eNiro is much more family friendly than the Kona.

I think this is my favorite EV. The low key design inside and out (Hopefully they don't all have the bright colour at the front). Non-sporty (comfy) handling. Good range. Not ridiculously expensive. Good size for me. Then the usual EV kicker sets in - Can't tow.
Lee Smith I wish they would do something about that. The first reasonably priced EV SUV that can tow will make a killing.
Similarly - I need a car which will take up to 5 bikes on a roof rack.
Same here. Please can we have an EV that can tow. We have a Leaf, but swopped our second car from an Auris Hybrid to an Avensis because we need a tow car. I'd much rather have one EV for all our needs, but the lack of towing ability rules it out. The Tesla Model X is too expensive, and too big for us. Owning an EV, even the 1st gen Leaf, just makes ICE cars feel old hat and I'm very aware of the pollutants pouring out of the exhaust.
Go to your dealer and put the money in his hands paying it off in full. Then spec the car completely and prepay the shipping charges. Now that the dealer is convinced that you are buying the car, perhaps he will work with his company to make it possible.
You also will be patient for 8 months THEN YOUR DEALER WILL FILLING IN THE GAP WITH The necessary info and you won't be upset because Kia has a great quality build.Interior is completely comfortable.
The Canadian Niro EV (SX touring) have LED headlights and they are brilliant (pun intended!) #IloveMyNiroEV
Who's Nigel 😀 great car 32k tho but still great. 250 range hassle free. Still personally can't be added charging my 22kw for journeys more than 15 minutes so fits for me 💪

The Kia Niro EV is a decent car. I would own one, it's well thought out.
if you use level 3 regen, does the car apply brake lights to warn the guy behind that you are slowing?
First edition do have LED headlights. Says so both in my user manual and on their website. Maybe it’s different depening on where it’s sold?

Greetings from the US (Michigan). Great video review! I wish I could get my hands on one of these to replace my leased 2016 LEAF. However, it seems they are getting first release in the zero-emission states. I understand there's no app connectivity for remote climate control start and checking state of charge whilst having a coffee. Was this your finding as well?
Karl Bloss that is the only problem with these tests. I cannot use the app as it would mean registering to a brand new car before the customer so I can’t say for sure but I understand you are correct.
The Canadian models include a 5 year cell subscription to access the car remotely from the KIA App. Here's a walkaround of the Canadian model th-cam.com/video/98WxVkF5irs/w-d-xo.html . Kia Canada hasn't published the specs for the model which is concerning. Not too worried about selling them,
I could drive this and charge 2 times a week instead of the every day, sometimes twice a day in my Leaf.
I wish they were available here... and that I could afford one.
I would be intrested to know if you can start the Cabin heat/cool from the key fob? I hope there is no need to be pluged in any more when setting climate timer as the battery is so big. thanks for the review the Wife seem keen now.

I went to my local Kia garage for some figures (my Leaf contract ends May 2020)...
Deposit :£3000
Gov Grant: £3400 (round about that figure?)
Monthly Payment: £557.03
Mileage: 8000 mls p/y
So it’s a no go for me, can’t justify those monthly payments.
May go to my Hyundai and see about the Kona, so will be interesting to see your next video comparing them 👍
Or will see what the 64kwh Leaf turns out like, and see what Nissan can offer 😉
Kona in Premium SE trim, is only £150 less on list price.
Small details I didn't think about when I bought my Toyota Auris hybrid.
First, Traffic Announcements. My previous cars had a button marked TA to turn the feature on, off or cancel current announcement. The Toyota requires a button to get into setup mode followed by four touch screen buttons to turn the feature on, same procedure to turn it off.
Second, electric folding mirrors (great if you've got them). On narrow lanes a simple push of a button folds them in reducing the car width a bit when there is an oncoming car. This is really a Tesla Model 3 issue.
Third, not a current problem, it's the disappearing hand brake. When I learnt to drive I was taught to apply the handbrake at red lights and other occasions when stopping for a few seconds. I asked a BSM instructor about this recently and he still teaches it. So, how do you do it with the new electric parking brakes?
The transmission Park is in the centre of the transmission knob and there is an electronic parking brake button on the centre console. I was wondering is the console different between right and left drive models?
In Canada we get heated and cooled seats for driver and passenger, heated seats in the back. The heat pump is standard for cold climates but they have a base model without it in order to qualify the Niro EV model for a federal EV grant. I was told Canada get 400 cars in total for this year.
So did Kia actually say they were only making plans for Nigel (XTC) ?

Great review Ryan and yes it's a Nigel. Just a shame that you'll have to wait an age to get your hands on one and pay £30k for it. We're looking for something Nigelesque but smaller and definitely cheaper. Perhaps a Colin or a Brian. I suggested to my wife that what she needs is a Sheetal but said said it needs to be reliable!
Great review. Shame the wait list is so long I’ll never even consider it. By the time you get it much better vehicles will be available. Tesla Model 3 still tops my wish list.
I drove it on some backroads in Sport mode and I found it quite exciting considering it is a heavy crossover vehicle. The steering got heavier and more agile. The throttle response also increased. I found the car pretty noisy though, with studded winter tires, but like you say, It's a Kia.
In sweden We have full LED on e-Niro
... and in Ireland too. But strangely not in mainland UK. No blind-spot warning either.

Great review. I don't believe the car is bland but there trying to make an EV that looks / behaves like a normal car. It's strange that the UK spec doesn't have the LED headlights when other countries do.. It's also the same with the memory seat function which aims countries don't have. Interested to see the Australian spec once it arrives. Cheers.
Regarding the headlights doesn't the e-Niro comes with HID's or Xenons.?
To be honest i don't like LED headlights, I had them on a hired Kia Sportage, I found they cannot give the range the Xenons on my present car give me and the worse thing is when on main beam the big white street signs reflect back at you so bright they blind you, it's almost like a car coming towards you with main beams.

I finally did a 30-minute drive in my Kia Niro EV 2019 and noticed the driver seat is narrow (seems like it's a little tight and hugging me)... I didnt notice this in my old Nissan LEAF 2017, which I assume now has a wider seat.. anyone else noticed this? Or maybe I'll just get used to it?

It's only a small point but it looks like the colour matching on the charge flap is a bit off. Otherwise the only problem with it is there aren't enough available.

Incidentally I find my side charge flap on my i3 to be a bit of a pain. I prefer the front flap on the niro and our old leaf

But i think the dangling cords holding the caps is flimsy and looks cheap. SHould be a solid cap and hinge like on LEAF.
I don't get why the place for the charging cables is always under the boot. If you have anything in there it's a pain to get to them. Surely there's somewhere more logical to put a holder.

Good thing most public chargers "in the states," include its attached cable to plug into your EV...
I reckon for day to day travel, in the boot/truck in fine. But when travelling or loaded up, I'd just sling the cables on top of the cargo being carried. Or there's the niffy poly box under the bonnet/hood adaption.
One positive thing about the Tesla is that it was designed from the ground up without a large front engine - and so has some storage up front. A shame other car companies haven’t incorporated that element yet. Perhaps second generation designs...

So go over a curb and you mite hit the battery

Ground clearance for both Kona Electric and eNiro is 160mm.
I have an e-niro. It's amazing. Quite surprised to hear it being called a 'Nigel' here - it really isn't.
I really wish they hadn't downgraded the First Edition. The Korean version looked really nice, I was very excited... And then saw the boring UK version and now I'm going off it. But a Kona is a year wait so what to do...
Apart from the act that grey cars are more difficult to see in the UK and statistically are more likely to be involved in an accident.
I was on a waiting list in North Carolina until I learned it would be 12-24 months, to perhaps getting one. I told them to forget it and I’ll get the leaf +.

On tech specs its way superior, if you are a "button person" then i get. Or no service center nearby?
Having owned four kias previously the steering is the vehicles biggest let down and when I got behind the wheel of the 2018 leaf WOW as you'll hear me say on many occasions how epically Great its steering is. Sadly I have a worn rack I believe on my leaf and it feels like I'm back in my kias :(. Cheers

On a job right now at heathrow and on the way here I activated pro pilot and whereas before the steering wheel is very stiff it's now easily movable left or right from the centre and the pro pilot is having to make inputs all the time as if its trying to play catch up! Cheers

E niro or model Y SR+. Yes the Y. Will be a tuff decision to make in 3 / 4 years time 😉 .
No contest. If you can afford a Y, you'll get it. Faster charging and the 'Supercharger' network, plus a superior driving autonomy & inter-connectivity.

But you're wright , should buy a tesla , without them EV's wouldn't be as hot topic as today. Tesla is allways one step ahead. See etron, 150kW charge speed and S+X gets 145 ( old) and 200kW with the updated drivetrain.
If they should get an update in in material and european quality Tesla will be unbeatable ( they allready are but many ppl freak out on that topic , you know my point

By the time it’s available to own (possibly late 2020) imagine where the EV market will be ? Seriously, start the discussion about Cobalt, Lithium and Palladium mining for EV batteries. The politics behind it all is the main, though not the only reason for why you can’t buy an EV that isn’t already on a forecourt. Another approach would be asking why the cars are taking so long to supply. Chinese interests in Democratic Republic of Congo in Artisan mining of Cobalt on black markets..... nobody wants to go near this subject because it proves how environmentally and morally disastrous EV battery production and disposal is and because they will become the enemy of an industry with vested interests. All punters want to know is how much it will cost to buy and charge an EV. Great review as usual. :)
I do find the price of new cars in England Laughable not the PCP price where you rent for three years then hand back because you can't afford the balloon payment.I can only say there is one word linked to the new car manufacturer business and it's Greed.They shouldn't call them the Kia Ceed, it should be the Kia Greed
I actually like the look of this car.I have and love my Mazda CX7 2.2 diesel and I look to the future and longer range electric cars.Unfortunetetly since carmageddon in 2008 manufacturers have put prices up every year to the point no one buys lots of people use PCP to get now because they can't afford or can't wait.If our government wants more of these on the road then they need to tell manufacturers to get real.Just Look at Audi's electric effort £73,000.Everytime I see one on the road I will think yep one born every minute and there he goes
would love one of these but cost too high compared to hybrid versions. huge deposits and then £500+ a month on pcp. thats the bit they need to work on next, reducing the prices to get much closer to ice pcp prices
It`s really a great car but unfortunately having a leadtime of 16 months. That's killing the EV attempts.
Been a Kia customer for over 2 decades. Before that (early 1990's) had Hyundai. Test drove this a few days ago (my dealer likes me, considering I've been buying Kia for longer than he's been in business).
BUT... drove a Tesla Model-S several days before I tried the Niro...
In short... despite my long association with Kia, I will be waving goodbye to them in a few months - will be getting a Tesla Model-3. Tesla is light-years ahead of everyone else in the EV space.
... and if you have to ask why, you'll never know...

@@davethevicar88 Why? I can afford whatever they throw at me. So what if it's £15k-£20k - which is what I've been told so far. I really don't need to bother with pricing. I want the car because it is arguably the best car on the road. Cost just isn't something I need to bother myself with. (LOL)

Don't you have to pay car tax because before the government incentive the price is over £40k
Insurance is an individual thing but we pay slightly less to insure our Model X than we do our Leaf Tekna. Both come in under £250, one of the few benefits of passing 50.
Nice video, car looks a bit dull to be honest. I will be purchasing the Leaf instead next year.
Brian j either are great cars. I think the Leaf has a bit more flexibility in terms of space 👍
@@EVOpinion really? The Niro looks substantially larger than my 2016 Leaf.
The Leaf + barely clears 200 miles of range and doesn't have any kind of thermal management for the battery. I'd guess they're going to do the same thing with the Niro as they did with the Kona... Only thermal management for certain markets.
Tyler Hardy yes in terms of range the e-Niro is far better but the Leaf would suit my needs better. That said everyone is different 👍

Nigel? Really? Maybe you prefer pretty loafers over Doc Martens, I dont know but it's got some excellent mileage per charge, decent capacity and a fantastic bottom line. Just the facts will do. A little suggestion for your review videos:
Whenever you talk about range or speed, don't just talk about it in terms of miles alone. Please also include kilometers as a speed/range measurement.
You *do* have quite a few viewers outside the UK with a massive interest in EVs, who are in the dark when it comes to to the term "miles" as a way to do speed/range.

Just another good but boring Eco car. These will all feel prehistoric once a few model 3 are on the road. I cant think of a reason why someone would pick this over a model 3. If you can afford the kia you can stretch to the Tesla as you get so much more. I expect that the residuals on the Tesla will be super strong too which will make the PCP deals very close.
I think it's reasonable to worry about the support system of Tesla. Kia has been making cars longer and has better customer support than Tesla. I would prefer to not have to wait months for my car to get repaired like plenty of people report with Tesla. Another thing I have read is the high cost of insurance for the Tesla.

@@EVOpinion I meant the music that's playing while you talk at the start. Volume should either be way down on the music or you should interrupt the music when you talk. It's only a few seconds but it give a bad impression IMO, look at the first 20 sec and see for yourself.
The Stonic is the Kona equivalent but Kia are not making it as an EV as yet. The E Niro is a bigger car. To be honest I dont know why people in the UK clamour for the poorly built and supported US Tesla compared to this. Id bag an E Niro every time. And arent the lights powered off the alternator so shouldnt sap your battery? You drive a Leaf mate, I dont get all this 'Nigel' stuff.

I don't like most car reviews because the reviewers don't know what they want or are looking for in a vehicle. What we get is a BS train of thought without context of the vehicle's intended purpose. This review was no better. If every car you review should be a sports car - then go drive a sports car and review that! What a crap review.
ALSO - you don't want LED headlights if you live anywhere that gets snow in the winter. Incandescent headlights melt snow so that it doesn't build up and block the light while you're driving through a storm.
If it was so bad, go make your own.
