1970 Porsche 908/3 Group 6 Prototype racing on track: Accelerations, Downshifts & 3.0L Flat-8 Sound!

  • The Porsche 908 was a sport prototype introduced in 1968 to comply with the new FIA rules for Group 6 racing, limiting engine displacement to 3,000 cc. Porsche designed a new air-cooled 3.0-litre flat-8 engine producing 350 hp at 8,400 rpm. Originally the 908 was a closed coupé to continue the Porsche 906, Porsche 910 and Porsche 907 series.
    Despite winning the 1000km Nürburgring, the 908 was anything but convincing in 1968, with the older 907 delivering better results but struggling on faster tracks where Ford GT40s were still dominating. Porsche so decided to go one step further and develop a Group 5 sports car which will be fielded from 1969: the 917.
    For the 1968 24h Le Mans, Porsche further develop the 908 giving her a Long Tail body (908 LH) to be more suitable for the long straights of the French track. The 908 LHs were the fastest in qualifying, but troubles with the alternator caused delays and even disqualifications as the new Porsche team leaders had misinterpreted the repair rules.
    In 1969 Group 6 rules were slightly changed again and Porsche was able to reduce the weight of the 908. The ''new'' 908, called 908/2, was now a lighter spyder race car. In fact Porsche decided to shorten the LH body and remove the roof of the 908 to reduce the weight of the original 908 by 100 kg. After the unveil of the 917, the 908 started to succeed.
    Despite the more powerful 917 improving towards the end of 1969, the career of the 908 continued. On rather twisty and slow tracks like Nürburgring and Targa Florio, the 917 was not suited well. In 1970 Porsche introduced the 908/3. Based upon the lightweight and short Porsche 909 which was used in hillclimb racing, the new version was even shorter than the 908/02 and only weighed 500 kg. The 908/3 was very successful at the Nürburgring and in the Targa Florio.
    In this video you can watch two different 908/3s racing on track during some recent weekend by Peter Auto at Circuit Paul Ricard and at Monza Circuit. They are chassis 001 (Gulf colours) and chassis 002 (Martini livery) and back in the days they were both development prototypes, extensively used for testing from 1969 to 1971.

    As I recall, the drivers didn’t like the -3 because they were moved so far forward. But one auto racing show said the -3 hiked the lap speed at the Targa Florio by 20 mph over the year before.

      The /3 was also a fair amount twitchier to drive than the /2 Flunders or original LH. But it was light on its feet, and it more than proved its worth at both the Targa Florio and the Nurburgring for its adept handling

      The 908 in the 908/2 and 908/3 variants were used by Porsche for tight, twisty tracks like the targa Florio, where 917 was used and better suited for much faster courses like Le Mans.

    Sweet BMW M1 next to the Porsche...but the 908 sounded amazing on track...even though it doesnt sound like a traditional v8. The silver Martini livery is gorgeous. Great video, Bozzy!

    The 908-3 was the best-handling car ever, along with the Alfa 33TT-3. Kinnunen's lap record at the Targa Florio will stand forever.

    To me, acquiring either one of these or big brother 917 is akin to finding the golden unicorn from Atlantis! They are pure racing cars from the pure racing era. Legend has it you could go to the factory wipe snow off one and buy it to drive home.
