Your quote about doing an audio only interview and how it forces you to be a better filmmaker is very interesting...never thought of it like that....makes perfect sense.
Location lights, run n gun style, manual focusing, starts to feel so "wrong" when you get used to shooting in controlled conditions but this footage is straight up proof and reassuring that you can still get amazing shots on the go. I also love those focus pulls that are "delayed" between the two characters. It almost feels like a "character reveal". Great video like always!!!
I can really speak to the "Embrace the Suck" advice being super important. Getting good at making the best of a bad situation is hard but once you get good at that, it'll shock you what you're able to get away with. It really simplifies things sometimes when you do actually get to light similar situations. Great video Mark. This is great advice.
A photographer transitioning to video and cinema :) I cannot wait to begin these projects.Mark - I need just a little bit of time, and of course a camera. In love with the Sony FX3. I'll make you proud.
It depends but its an option because docu films also have to persuade the audiences to notice the protagonist’s situation, director’s interest or something
Great video Mark! I'm actually an AOD student. I'm curious to know your thoughts on rigging out your fx3 with a v-mount battery, rails, etc. to add more weight and stability to the shots. Clearly you guys don't do that and just wondering if you ever prefer having more heft to your setup and if so when?
One thing doing a lot of run and gun is the tip you suggested, accepting the brightness and the lighting won't look great. I have noticed that even hollywood films have shots where outside lighting is blown out. I love how you say that the raltionship between the two characters in that blown out shot example is most important.
Seeing interviewees facial expressions when talking about certain things is one of my favourite part of documentaries, but interesting to see your approach and I guess it makes it easier to focus on the interview than worrying about framing, lighting etc and might make the interviewee more comfortable as well. 👍🏾
Very informative! I have an event coming up in a couple of weeks and instead of just filming a vlog for my channel, I'm gonna try and do it documentary style. I already have some pre B-roll filmed to save some time that night so I can concentrate more on the main content of the film. I've never done it this way, so I'm pretty excited about it!!
Im really happy I found your channel. Ive been working on documenting work as an Astrophotographer for the last month or two ( not blue-hour stuff, real deep sky work) and I wrestle with the same thing every shoot it feels.. When to, and when not to use the external monitor. For my MF lenses it's obvious, but when I use my 24-105 f4 I have a tendency to just use the LCD and trust the AF. Whats your idea, or mental workflow here?
Great tips over here 👏🏻 thanks once more Mark. Quick question, how did you manage to get so clean audio straight from camera? Is it all perfectly capture by the mic or it involves some post production treatment? And if it’s all about the mic, which one you recommend 😉 thanks in advance 👊🏻
I'll save up for AOD cos if you're giving out these gems like this... imagine what's in the ACTUAL PACKAGE. I learn so much from your videos. Thank you
Okay so in the moments where you’re shooting with little to no light, whether it be inside or outside, how do you get this look without getting noise in the shadows? This may be a dumb question but are you doing the work in post to eliminate the noise or are you able to shoot it a certain way in camera where you don’t get so much noise in your shadows? In slog3 I seem to always have noise issues when I shoot without lights.
This is gold!!! 💚 Thank you very much 🙏🏽 About the apprtment in Spain: it is cool, but it is so close to the shore that it might be that is unlaufull. The law prohibited to build so close to the sea, but cousins of politicians with building companies could do it 😅 terrible country he he
@@markbone he he I never expected you to be an amazing doc maker, generous creator, and owning a building company while being the cousin of some average Spanish politician 😂 but who knows? I just wanted to point out that this kinds of touristic destinations, while beautiful and impressive, normally hide a not so beautiful face to them. I don’t know if it’s the case of that specific location, but very well could be. Love to you 💚
Spain is that lucky country... sunrises by the East coast (Mediterranean Sea), sunsets by the West coast (Atlantic Ocean). Similar for France, with more to the West and North-West and less to the East. Raymond Depardon, French photographer and documentary director, with decades of experience and thousands of images all over the World, simply told me : "It takes real scenography and a real director to create a documentary, the film-it-all attitude takes you nowhere.". How true !
The first 100 people to join AOD on Black Friday will be receiving our brand new LUT pack for free!
Is it going to be marked down? It’s so expensive now I know you guys gotta eat too but inflation is awful 😢

This just saved my rear!
This was so good, Mark!

Forces you to be a visual story teller
Love the tips about the 5 shots. Got them written down as Marks Golden shots 👍🏼😅

Great video Mark. This is great advice.
I honestly laugh at how crappy some people’s films are when they have high budget. I literally never use lights. 🤣 I’m always on the run.
Just when I read a Mark Bone thumbnail and think "Oh this will be repeat" ... I learn something new - treat the audio as a character !
I’m running out of ideas for video titles and thumbnails but I’m never running out of new tips to talk about
Wow!!! Thanks for this video!!!
Whenever TH-cam suggests a video of you, I click! Great tips as always - thank you, Mark!
You're the best!
Amazing video as usual. You always find a way to add some key nuggets to the same topic.
Some golden tips right here! Controlling the house lights and recording real time audio snippets being my favourite :) Thanks Mark
Much love brother
Those beach shots are crazy good... i thought that was like a sunset, blue hour type stuff...
Thanks man! It was like 11am
Never regretted discovering your channel. You dole out much information in every video. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
Golden! Absolute golden tips, cant thank you enough for everything you've been doing to the community bro!
My pleasure
“Audio is a character in the film”. - absolutely. AOD “One Day Doc” should have a “Best Sound Design” category 😊
Incredible video, very in line with how I like to shoot and I picked up some great tips. New subscriber.

I was introduced to this channel hours ago, already pulling out a pen and pad on the first video I watched… thank you now and later!
🤘🤘🤘
It was nice to met you in Berlin Mark! So see you on our running challenge soon haha
Recently saw an Fx 3 in person for the first time, and was shocked at how compact it is! Really love it and can't wait to get one of my own one day.
Yeah it’s tiny!
great video Mark as always
Thanks mate!!
Thanks for the five steps - keeping them in mind will be very helpful for a coming shoot!
Go crush it Ananda
I never realized how much direction goes into a documentary. I’ve always thought it was about getting the moment as it is.
Depends your approach!
It depends but its an option because docu films also have to persuade the audiences to notice the protagonist’s situation, director’s interest or something
There are different types of documentary filmmaking. That is one of them, and the lind is this video is another

I prefer seeing the screen bigger whenever I can. So even if AF isn’t an issue I want to be frame and compose my shots with the best screen
YES! Please add a breakdown to CInimatic Eye
will do!
could you fix the link for the mic? Great video!
Great! love the helios flairs and moody touch ;)
They’re the best

awesome, where can we see the end product/final video?
The FX3 link brings you to a FX30 page
Hey Mark, what are those headphones you’re wearing in the BTS and what are they for?
Such a good bromance film.
Just great advice

AOD will blow your mind!
Awesome 😎
When you said the continuity doesn't matter as long as it looked good... my inner script supervisor puked on my shoes.
Wasn't he just talking about continuity in the lighting. I definitely don't think he meant for the story.
I’m talking about lighting nuance
@@markbone I totally get it. Particularly in a run and gun context.
the link for your filter is broken. wondering what filter you used so i can purchase for that softening effect. thank you!

dope!
Did y’all use lavs for this project?
We try to. In this case we did not
❤❤❤❤

Which camera?
Your fx3 link is a fx30 link.

do u have a focus puller?
No
what did you set white balance in the opening scene?
6000
This is gold!!! 💚 Thank you very much 🙏🏽

Never liked any of sonys low bitrate amateur cameras
😂
@@markbone just take Jared Polin last video says it all
most sony can only run bitrate at 300 max you call that pro or cinematography hehe
