huge thank you to everyone who submitted questions, this video wouldn't be the same without you! and thank you to Crucial SSDs for supporting this channel, check them out, by far my fav drives: geni.us/MarkBone_X9X10SSD
Are you shooting in New Zealand or just passing through on holiday?
Great video really enjoyed this one. For the crucial SSDs can you use them directly in a fx3/x30 as memory instead of a card ?
Old time Music producer here, what you did with sfx and voice is not wrong! Another way is to keep the voice in mono or center in the mix, double the audio and pan it far out on the sides, that will also help give a presence to the voice
Phew… good to know
You mean double the voice track?
@@rorycowieson5924 No, voice is usually heard as mono if you use a voiceover. A technique to get more space in the mix is usually to balance frequencies, that is when you cut out frequencies with an eq like a puzzle to get presence for each track. Another way is to use the stereo space which he did here. That means that you place the voiceover dead in center as mono. And place/pan the sound effects out on the side spectrum. You can also use both techniques to get an even better audio mix.
@@rorycowieson5924 In house/dance music, the most tricky thing is to mix the bass and the kickdrum because they occupy the same frequency and is in mono. Easiest is the hi-hats, usually they are layered by panning one to left and the other to the right channel
@@rorycowieson5924 Sorry to spam all these answers but, you can double the voice track. This is done in some instances for surround sound voice overs. It would be interesting to try on more low level stuff actually! What I would do is actually 3 tracks. 1 track is tha bass of the voice, so eq low pass all low frequencies. The 2 top tracks should then use high pass eq, and pan them out to R and L channels. That would give a God like precense voice over like morgan freeman!
Dude, I just love the authenticity you emote. The Morgan Freeman section made me laugh out loud. All great stuff as usual brother. Thank you for being you.
Audio Engineer here! Mixing is subjective. Does it sound good? if so then it's right. It's less about the technical side and more about creating a balance and space for everything to sit well in the audio spectrum. That being said it's also important to learn the fundamentals so that you can break them and be creative. At least thats what i've learned over the 10 years of doing this.
Not a sound engineer, but I did my fair share of sound design and mixing back in the day. Like you said, it is subjective so I do it the way I like it and hear it, but I also learned some basic rules. Sound effects should usually come with a sense of space and direction as well as the voices, like voices off screen. It makes the sound more natural and immersive into the film. But besides of that, it is exactly how you said. It is about balance. And this is why I don't like most audios nowadays, when I watch tv or even yt, music seems to be always louder then voice and I just do not like it. I have problems understanding what is being said.
Mark, here is how you can get the voiceover to cut through in the mix: first, I would consider doing this in Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Nuendo, or something like that but if you can do this in Premiere, great! You need to set up a bus where you will be setting the output of your voiceover. Insert a compressor that can do sidechaining (in Logic, the native Compressor does it) on the sound effect channel (punching bag in this case). If you use the Compressor plug-in in Logic, you will see at the top left a pop-up window where it says "Side Chain:" assign it to the voiceover's bus. Adjust your compressor's threshold so that the average is between -3 and -5 db of reduction (in the VU meter). Now when there is voiceover, the sound effect will essentially duck under it so that the voiceover will always be dominant, but when the sound effect is on its own, it will be up where it should be in the mix! The other thing to do is to do EQ on both channels; much of the frequencies the voiceover will use are in the mid-range so in this case, cut the mid-range on the punching bag, boost a bit the low frequencies (below 250hz but I would roll off at 50hz) and then maybe boost at 5khz to get a bit more presence. This technique is used also for music mixing where you want your kick drum to always be heard over the bass guitar... There are a lot of videos on this technique on TH-cam which explain this better than I can!
The creative freeman cuts took me OUT 😂😂😂 well done Mark
Me too. At first I was like: what? that must have been a mistake, but then I just realized it was a meme just befor the next freeman shot came in. lol
haha! "why so dark" was my exact thought. But I wouldn't necessarily say dark, it's just a very contrast-y image, which works for the project. Great video. Great info.
I’m here for Creative Freeman. 💪🏾
Sound people here. If it sounds good, it sounds good. Anyone who will judge you on technique even tho its sounding great, is wrong. :)
But there are things you can do to make it even more crisp like sidechaining with a compresor or frequency specific sidechaining an EQ to turn down bands that are similar to the voice over. That way the SFX sounds fat and you don't get the "ducking' effect you sometimes get with sidechaining the volume.
Fav sound person advice I’ve received. Thank you :)
I love the grain look! I just finished my first-ever documentary, and you and your videos helped me tremendously. Love this content!
Great job, Mark. Your channel is a great addition to the AOD curriculum. I am loving it all, my friend.
Those small SSD drives are amazing
Great tips Mark! Love to see you flexing your muscles and trying some new things. Gives me encouragement to take some risks in my own projects.
Many people do not understand why I do some projects for a small fee or even for free. Because of creative freedom which lately has become for me the most important thing. It's what keeps me going.
Loving this type of videos! So insightful brother💪🏼
I think you're right on with the audio panning.... I think sound mixers would traditionally do it on the track level, rather than on the clip level, but that is the basics of surround sound. That's basically the whole point dolby atmos is the panning of sounds.
Great vid! Packed full of very helpful tips/tricks 🙏
Thanks brother
Great video man!! Definitely going to be putting this to use in documentary filmmaking !!
Just finished a year-long project - 40 minute documentary named hearts delight. An orchard story Find it on TH-cam. Used lots of your ideas. Thanks For making my world a better place!
I continue to comment the same thing: you post - I click! Not even two minutes into the video and you give a tip that will change pretty much everything for my future videos.
Huge thanks, Mark! Again!
Thanks mate ❤️🤘
Bro when you hit up Melbourne would love a catch up.
As always find so much value in these videos. Have a blessed Christmas wth the fam.
Made it to the early squad! Awesome video as allways.
Yes I find your videos a little dark sometimes, at times I am wanting someone to turn up the lights (but love your work)
I always troll people and just say brighten your screen lol
gotta luv creative freeman mate hehe another thoughtful vid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love all the sound folks coming in and saying what you did was fine.
😂🤓
Just a great video man foreal
Love your videos, and about the darkness, grain,... I completely agree with you, even though it's a matter of personal taste, that's why people dig your style, the grain/"low" exposure (properly exposed to me), the intimacy of it all... You're an amazing storyteller, Kill or be killed is amazing. When he starts training and that bass drops,... Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your experience, couldn't thank you enough.
Appreciate the feedback. Glad you like the vibe
In the ad industry, often times the cheapest client is the most needy and wants more than our high budget clients. They’re draining.
Creative freeman hahah, love it that you kept this part it in the video. Amazing vid as always mark✌️
Thank you 😁
Yo Mark, do what feels good. There are no rules!
I have the opposite in my career so far 😅 Lower budget, more involved, more fuss, less creative freeman. Higher the budget, more creative freeman.
Like that meme:
$100 client: "Could we revise? I just feel like it is a lot of money and we need to make the right creative decisions representing our company and will determine the future of our business...."
$10 000 client: "Got the vid. Thanks! Payment made 👍"
"Why so dark" I find in my work often I accidentally edit for my display but then on phones or cheap TV's it looks too dark... But so far, all MB videos and films look great on all my devices, so 💁♂ looked good to me.
Enjoy Australia!
your vids are awesome -once i finish my doc im sending it to you first
real quick -when filming in log with your iphone do you use blackmagic app.
great topic good video
Thanks mate
Ooohh Melbourne meetup please!!
I've been following your channel and AOD for quite a while now. You gave me the inspiration and motivation to follow my dream of becoming a documentary film maker...I'm still far away from it but I'm working in that direction.
If you come to Sydney I will happily offer you a private cruise in the harbour with my boat. It's the only thing I can offer you back! Hope you'll organise a meet up !! Thanks again for all the value you give away for free...
Ciao!
Australia woooop!! Hope I meet you!
I have a little pouch for my Crucial on the back of my laptop. Velco can do the trick as well. Keeps it tight and tidy :)
So smart! Send me a pic on Instagram
If you are heading to Tasmania, it would be grand to meet up.
Amazing content thank you! I would also ask these pre-workout promoters ‘what gear are you using?’ 😂😉
LOVE the darkness and grain.
🤘🤘🤘◼️◼️◼️
@@markbone Clients fear the dark 😂glad they went for it on this one!
Love to see people pushing their creativity and not staying stuck. Well done! Question for you: what was the total project length of producing this video- From the first time you had contact with the brand, to the time it was delivered?
2.5 to 3 weeks roughly
@@markbonehigher resolution mean more bitrate CBR not vbr but higher fps not better clear texture that's why you shoot in 2160p 30fps or 24fps ? It's lossless compressed but 1080p 60fps has only frames high but not quality information details mean more resolution 4k support record resolution matter in tv but mobile 1080p enough or 4k but 8k useless because 8k compressed codec block tree unit etc. pixels need😊
Mark little tip for the step up rings. You dont need to have the whole "cone". You can get 49-67mm and then 67-82mm and youre set :)
DONT TAKE AWAY MY CONE
Seems like you've recorded the voiceover by pluging in the shotgun mic into the XLR top handle and simply hitting record while the lens cap is still on? Been doing this twice now myself. Do you do anything specific to keep the file sizes low or anything?
Mark, I've seen all your TH-cam videos and now I am doing Module 1. I notice you do not use Cinema lenses for most of your videos. Perhaps you can do a video on that? And maybe explain if there is a major difference between using cinema lenses and photography lenses. Yes, I am aware major movie productions use them but do actual docu films need them? thanks
Thanks for this bud! Quick question if you could answer please- I am debating between an Fx3 and Fx6. What would you pick if money wasn’t a problem? I do like how handy the fx3 is. Thank you!
FX6 for sure
@@markbone thanks man. Appreciate it :)
I love this channel. I want to join AOD
What iPhone do you have?? I shoot using only my iPhone and learning those capabilities.
Hi Mark, Why are you using the X10 Pro at all, except for being future-proof? Neither the iPhone 15 nor Macbook Pro provide USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 speeds, because of Thunderbolt 3 and 4, they max out at 1000 MB/s. So the X9 Pro should be sufficient and just as fast with those devices and considerably cheaper for most people
How did Blue Star use this video? How did you pitch the usefulness of the video to them? (Also...I love your content. I watch almost everything your release!)
I second this question, would love to know more on this…
Mark in his emo era with the one black nail 😅
😂😂😂 thank my aputure light for that one. Smashed it right good
Is the 10 pro ssd you recommend faster than the Samsung t9 ssd?
Did you guys capture the audio on the restaurant scene out of a shotgun that distance or did you used lavs or some AI enhancer?
Nope. Just shotgun
@@markbone Thanks for the answer. Sounded amazing. Inspiring!
I want more creative FREEman. : ) I noticed you have multiple steups on your Helios lens. What's your rational for that approach vs a 49 to 82 step up ring?
I speak about this later in the video
@@markbone, I must’ve totally missed this, even though I saw you remove the filters from the lens.
What's the best mbs to avoid the grain for other social media platforms, like IG, Tiktok, Shorts, etc?
I have found it needs to be close to 200mbps which is a fat file
@@markbone Wow... that is. I'll give it a shot. Thank you 🙏🏿
Hey Mark, what is a razor thin budget. And how long did it take to shoot your footage and do the interview. Grtz
$3K. And half an hour
@@markbone half an hour for all the footage! You’re a hero! Looks like half a day minimum! I also make short docs but it always find it difficult make it profitable! thanks for your valuable content. Grtz Arthur
FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
❤❤❤❤😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉
First! just wanna say thanks for your videos.
you're most welcome
Did anyone else think this was gonna be about lighting w/ 0 budget? 😆
How to summon M.Freeman for No Budget too
Hahaha
Creative freeememtt 😂😂
bro its very good , but a lot halation there.
Looks nice but nobudget
Mark I see you made one small mistake in your title, you forgot coma, so let me correct you 😊 it should be: "Get high, end cinematography for no budget". You're welcome bro ✌️
I was bummed that the video was not about the thumbnail. Please don’t do that 😢
lol. Don’t worry there is more content to come around that
