Hey Mark, as I am an underwater photographer and drawn my camera couple times already and I would recommend to use Silica Gell (pouches what you can find in shoes box or some electronics). It will absorb water and humidity faster and better than rice.

With saltwater it's also a good idea to remove all batteries / etc. and rinse in distilled water. I know it sounds bad to add extra water to the mix, but the salt and minerals are what will over time corrode elements and you want to make sure there's no saltwater left to dry. Electrical components getting wet isn't an issue so long as there's not electricity running through them at the time.
Additionally, I've heard rice is fairly ineffective at water absorption so your best bet is silica if your camera gets wet.

    • @bedemiller

Forget rice and the urge to try to turn it on while wet! Take out the battery and put it in in an oven, preferably with a fan and set it to 110-115 F and leave it for 5 hours. 115 is low enough not to damage plastic, electronics or CCD, like in a hot car and it ensures any water held capillary between the circuit board and any ICs will evaporate and not have time to form conducting metal salts from corrosion that will short electronics. Rice won't do that

if it went straight from the ocean to the rice, the salt will corrode your fx30 sooner or later. As counter intuitive as it sounds, the best way to do it is to take it from the salt water, to a bucket of distilled water real quick, to the rice.

When there is a possibility to cage, add weight with batteries and a monitor, go for it. If you control nicely your moves with your whole body, you can manage to get really smooth shots. Then stabilisation in post and you're golden :)

Hey Mark, thanks for the video, you have been one of my go to guys over the last three years of lockdown and turmoil. Listen, I had a quick question, a few years back you did a video where you mentioned a microphone that, in your words, “makes things sound better than real life“, and I have been in search of a good voice over microphone. Can you tell me what microphone that was you were talking about? Or, if things have changed, can you recommend any decent microphones that provide a good rich texture as I have a fairly deep and rich voice. I’m leaning towards the road NTG-3. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Also, on a personal note, I want to thank you for helping me branch out of my comfort zone, skill set wise… I’ve been a member of the writers Guild of America for 22 years, and during the pandemic, I was fortunate enough to sign a deal with Amazon studios, and it looks like I’m going to be producing and writing quite a bit… Along with directing and shooting things. You really are good at what you do and have a very good way of teaching. I’m going to check out your art of documentary. Be well, cheers! Jeff.

Hi Mark. Love your stuff. Now I’m no chemist but I have been told by someone who is that putting electronics that have been in contact with water in rice is a futility. Rice may dry out the device and it may start working again but it is the impurities in the water, in this case salt, are left behind and that will start to corrode the internals which sooner or later will cause the demise of your kit. Counterintuitively one way to mitigate is to wash (batteries out) your kit in pure deionised (yes I’m English) water in order to attempt to remove the contamination but there are no guarantees. I personally would be calling my insurance broker and would not trust that you got away with it.

Really good tips though about holding the camera away from you, I found that helped a lot, although a challenge doing it for an hour when the helicopter pulls tight turns. Also I totally agree to try and not do pans with the camera. Much better to let the helicopter do the moving.

7:45 - so :) do not use the rice this way, it should be close to the camera, but not touching it. Just close the camera inside a box with rice and it will do its thing if the box is sealed. It can also be plastic bag. After you flood a camera - FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING is to remove the battery, than let the water go out as much as possible. Than use the rice. And in the first moment you can send it to service - do it, there can be salt inside and even if the camera is alive, next time you go somewhere near water the moisture will go inside and use the salt to kill the camera for sure.

I know rice is popular but it's actually not very great at absorbing moisture, at least for cameras (which have holes). The grains or even the stratch (which is very fine) could enter your device and damage it.
Instead buy some Silica gels packets, it's very cheap and they are litteraly made to absord water and humidity. So dunk your camera or device in a bucket of them and you won't have any problem with rice grains or risking your gear even more.
I mean yes, overall, the rice is still probably cheaper and if you only have this in your house at the moment of the incident, it's probably the way to go. But to futureproof yourselves, please juste inest in a big bag of a 100 silica gel packets. You could even toss some in you camera bag so that your gear is always dry, even if it rains a lot on you bag.

Question, I read the stabilised lenses disable gyro data, which makes catalyst browse impossible, is that true? - camera stabe alone works fine with catalyst though (except dynamic active).
Also, what if you are doing vlogging or moving/walking with the camera? - following the 180 degree shutter rule is catastrophic in these situations, you get so much motion blur, even if you are ninja walking (but for a vlog you want to walk naturally) it's not correctable using catalyst browse or warp stabiliser. What are your recommendations for handheld shots with walking / self filming?

Does anybody know when an fx6 mkII is expected to come out? I'm eager to get an fx6 but don't want to if a newer model is on the horizon...

Thanks for insightful video. It’s about time for Sony to update the APS-C line, so I’d like to see a Sony a7000 or a6700. Something to compete with the Canon and Fuji APS-C offerings, like the R7 and XT line.

Another awesome, fun, and informative tutorial. Your channel has been a go to as I learn my FX3, and I'm a big fan of your doc work. I only used the "standard" steadyshot till now b/c of the crop, but just did a test run in a barn with the "active" mode. Definitely smoother, but there was visible stuttering and lagging one one of the barns vertical pillars as I passed it, something I'd read about with "active" mode. The subject was unaffected. Any expereince with those sorts of digital glitches? I was at 60fps/1/125 2.8, a hair less that 50mm to mimic the 50mm focal length given the crop. And using the GMII 24-70, which doesn't have image stabilization. Applied the 5% warp in post, helped smooth things out more but not that motion-slur glitch. I'm assuming if used w/o obvious vertical (if you're walking past) features to hang up on, it would be pretty smooth, as seen in your video here, but curious if you've experienced this, or anyone else.

I also have good results with that 24-105mm on my A7III. It's a nice lens for the price in my opinion.
Just regged for 3 of your courses by the way. Excited to start learning and to connect to the community!

Hello thanks so much for the tips. Regarding the running footage what would you do if instead an asphalt ground you would have a crispy broken terrain with little bounces. I want to record an MTB short riding in a bwm gs1200 sitting backwards? You think handheld would look stable?thanks by answering I was wondering if using a gimbal would be necessary
