We're Draining This 8 Acre Pond for Complete Restoration!

  • We have a client with an 8 acre pond that needs a complete pond restoration. This pond is too shallow around the banks, which created a continuous problem with lilypads and other aquatic vegetation. The pond also had little forage for the fish present, and the fish were all skinny with low relative weights as a result.
    Join us as we drain this pond and show you our plans for improving the structure of the pond and creating a trophy bass fishery in just a few years.

    How are lillypads a problem?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's too many of them, they can create several issues:
      1) Parts of the pond are no longer fishable.
      2) Parts of the pond aren't navigable by boat.
      3) They provide a significant amount of refuge for bluegill and other bass forage. As a result, bass have to work too hard to find food. They spend as much energy finding food as they do from eating it. As a result, they don't grow like they should.
      We usually recommend 20% vegetation cover or less in the farm ponds around here. That gives the bluegill and other forage species some places to hide and spawn, but still makes it easy enough for the bass to feed when they need to feed.

    Why not save the fish and put them back in the pond? Or where the water pump was let all the water stay in that deep hole and then after finishing the pond let them go back out to the pond? No way I'd kill 4lb fish on

    • @TLCPerfectPond

      The pond owner wanted to start over with a hybrid bass strain and improved genetics. They wouldn't have survived in that hole due to oxygen deprivation.

    I get there's no realistic way to make it quick and painless for a bunch of fish. But the callous lack of empathy, throwing them around and leaving them to suffocate atop the mud, is still kind of disturbing. The fish fry sounded good though.

    I don't give a rats ass about some fish dying - but wouldn't it have made sense to save the current fish and use them as a starting point for the new pond and save some money?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was one of the whole points of redoing the pond, besides the vegetation issue. The owner wanted Titan Bass in there, which are a superior hybrid and grow faster than anything we've ever seen. Also, not sure where we could have kept those fish while we waited months for the dirt work to happen. That would require a pretty big aquarium or holding tank.

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not, catch and release is one of the primary causes we see for poor bass health and unequally distributed populations. For a fertile pond, you should be removing at least 10 lbs of bass per acre per year. When all you do is catch and release, it results in overcrowding, too many predators, and not enough prey over time. When we perform population surveys on ponds, one of our more frequent recommendations is bass harvesting.

      @@TLCPerfectPond In certain instances I completely agree with your point culling smaller largemouth in the two pound range not higher or lower can be very effective. I also have dispatched bass that had several parasites or because they were damaged and also because they seemed starved all head no body whatsoever. I should have been more clear when I made the first remark.I have seen incredible results in a 2 acre pond were I live western Massachusetts.The more mid range bass that were relocated or dispatched the bigger the remaining bass had grown . So yeah I’m all for proper management!!

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can certainly fish in pads. The problem with excessive pads are that they make it harder for the bass to feed. Too much cover for bluegill means the bass expend just as much energy finding food as they get from the food itself. As a result, they tend to be below the standard weight for their length. This pond was a perfect example of that.

    • @TLCPerfectPond

      Do you not eat fish? How do you think fish are traditionally harvested for consumption? Would you have rather us just let the fish die in that shallow muddy water from a lack of oxygen? Transport wasn't an option because we didn't have a fresh water source anywhere close to that pond. So we harvested them all and cooked them.
