    So glad I came across this series of well explained jobs on the Tf. I have a Tf, and although I get most work done by a specialist, i have always prefered to do stuff myself. I will definitely enjoy watching the whole series.

    Hi, first time viewer. You have my sympathy especially after all the work you have done so far. It does look like timing, but I would compression test it as well. I've just looked back at your previous uploads and have this question why did you use that particular gasket?

    The original lead caps are a hard black plastic , when I was replacing mine the caps broke into little pieces
    and the new ones being a soft rubber I thought was a much better idea, and like you pointed out sat up proud
    it worried me but after watching your TH-cam video I can now rest easy and won’t go back and hit them down with a hammer.

    You may have sorted this by now, but I would be looking at the ECU coolant temperature on OBD scan tool, if the sensor is duff, then it will often tell the ECU that it is starting a hot engine when in fact it is cold. Hence why you were getting closer when the ambient temperature was higher.

    • @CynicalLemonade
      @CynicalLemonade 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I came here to suggest the same thing. Coolant sensor faults will prevent the car starting.

    • @ErikB750
      @ErikB750 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coolant temp failing often results in a too low temp, causing the engine too run rich.which is still safer that having it run too lean.

    • @tides2002
      @tides2002 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ErikB750 It’s known issue, in 16 years my TF has only failed to start twice, one dead alternator and one faulty ECU coolant temperature sensor that was reading slightly higher than ambient but enough to confuse the ECU.

    Oh the frustration! I've been looking at my 80th anniversary 160 sat in the garage thinking I need to get that back on the road. I'm Sure you've done this but, Cam shaft positioning sensor and crank sensor could do with checking as well as MAP sensor on the inlet. I know this sounds daft, but have you made sure the throttle is open when trying to start to rule out the idle control valve?
    Good luck mate, been following for quite some time

    You're not far away now Lee as you've changed most things in line, sounds like a sensor issue. The fuel tank is an odd design where there's always about 2 litres or so sitting in the base section so you need quite a bit to get it started. Good luck and well done for working in all weather! 👍🇬🇧

    a spark will ignite the fuel when timing is right, so fuel supply? Yup. Spark? Yup.Now its down to crank and cam sensors.giving the correct information. Remember the three thibgs needed for a flame. combustable material oxygen and heat. Get them at the same time and your sorted.

  • @JimGriffOne
    @JimGriffOne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Might be a timing issue. Get a mirror so you can look at the timing marks from a better angle, and you'll likely see they're aimed slighlty too low instead of being level. I always have this issue when putting the timing belt on. I have to do it multiple times while twisting one of the cam pulleys backwards slightly to get the belt on the correct teeth. Then cranking the engine around once by hand, the timing lines will line up straight instead of being slightly off.

  • @davidclowsley8081

    Was holding my breath waiting for her to start. My TF has been off the road since lockdown too. Sounds like a timing issue to me tbh. Track back through everything you did with cam belt etc. Good luck I’m sure you will get there if you have not already. You will love driving the TF. I feel your pain Lee. I would double check the timing. Its quite easy to remove the top cam belt cover to check that the cambelt gears are located correctly. I have just finished doing mine and fretted and farted around trying to get it right. Make certain the cam gear is located on the split dowel correctly as per manual and that the inlet and exhaust writing is also correct as per manual. Just done mine and forgotten already which way round they were🙄. Obviously the crankshaft pulley notch needs to be pointing at the plastic lower cover marker positioned at about 12 o'clock. If it is wrong then you will need to remove the two cam gears and cam belt, after removing the cam tensioner. I rejigged mine without removing the crank pulley and lower cover. Its a struggle to get everything set back up with the belt tensioned correctly, I turned the crankshaft pulley anti clockwise about one tooth so that on returning it to twelve 12 o'clock it put the tension on the belt. Its a fap but can be done. Hope that all makes sense. Getting the tensioner back on is a struggle and I used a piece of wood about 1/4 thick to lever between the alloy casting rib and the pulley wheel to enable getting the bolt back in. A few choice words uttered are a great help! You can of course be one complete revolution out but that becomes obvious as the camwheels are not aligned correctly, check them first and their position on the dowels. Of course it may not be timing at all in which case ignore all this🤔. Good luck.

    You may have made a mistake while installing the new timing belt.
    When assembling the camshafts, the drive pin of the inlet camshaft must be at 4 o'clock and the exhaust camshaft at 8 o'clock.

    I'm not hearing the fuel pump buzzing as it brings the pressure up when the ignition is turned on - might be a video/ sound issue.
    The beef I have is I think it was the second start attempt I am sure it was trying to start for a second. Then went to nothing.
    After the move to the new place, it really did try to start. Given that, the fuel and ignition plus timing must be ok, meaning it can't be so far out to be a major issue so I'd say all that is Ok.
    Oh, before the move, when using the Amazon Spark Tester, for sure we saw flames from the burning fuel mixture pushed out on the combustion stroke. That I think is a usable way to check fuel injectors if carefully done on the other cylinders.
    My leaning is towards fuel. When left to stand, over time, she did try to start but did not run. Overtime fuel build up in the fuel rail ? But with a lack of pressure, once the initial squirt is over, there is nothing more.
    Just occurred to me that in blowing into the fuel tank to siphon the fuel, you may have forced air into the fuel lines. Now I can't remember if that was before or after changing the filter, but with a new filter, that would have been filled with air when it went in and might need bleeding before it will work.I'd work to confirm the fuel system is all that it should be before turning to the sparks. The sparks are two completely independent systems, so one of them, or some of the spark plugs should work, and we did see sparks.
    You deserve a beer for working in the snow. :)
    Edit - in thinking about it, unplug the fuel return pipe from the injector common rail, turn on the ignition and this should pump fuel and bleed the rails. If the Siphoning did put air in the system it would have put it in this return rail, and new fuel filter will get primed up in this process. Let the pump run for a bit, not just a split second, but enough to do its job, ie a filters worth of fuel atleast.
    As you've never run the car before, on mine when switching on the ignition I hear a buzzing sound that is the fuel pump bringing the fuel system up to pressure, I think its about 50psi. When there it stops. The injectors are just a valve, and when open, the fuel under pressure escapes the nozzle. At;east one of your injectors must have been working for the flames seen in the video. That spark plug must have been working to ignite that mixture. The crank sensor must be working for the ECU to know to trigger the spark at that cycle, and because the car did try to start, there must be compression and the timing must be right.

      @@wheatleysworkshop Thanks for the info. Doing first long trip with the TF 21/04/2021 so fingers crossed. Good luck with the ignition problem.

    Is the exhaust Lambda sensor plugged in? Is the ECU and the alarm module original? They must to be a pair.

    Fuelling looked okay but I'd be interested to know what state the injectors are in?

    Frustrating but at least your TF is still kicking, I blew my MGF engine racing my mate as soon as I got it going, oh well MX5 time I guess 😂
