A work of art, INDEED. One of the finest model railways I've ever seen (and I've seen a LOT of them). Heartily agree with the philosophy of creating a realistic scene rather than cramming in miles and miles of track. All of the "greenery" looks absolutely natural. BRAVO! Wish I could see it in person. The details are amazing too. Thank you for sharing this.
I was fortunate enough to see County Gate a few times. I always felt it was the most realistically layout of its day, and still is even now. The backstory of its creation is fascinating and brings to life this exquisite model. I did see Cliffhanger once, but never made the connect between these two inspirational models.
I also filmed this when it was at Peterborough and the running and sound effects were first class. This set up is on a par with Pendon and John's commentary certainly adds to the programme. John Castle
Finest model railway ive ever seen, cannot find any fault with it, the greenery absolutely brings the landscape to life it looks so lush and natural and the general craftsmanship is flawless. I will take a lot from this and hopefully my layout will be very true to life because of it. I will definately be looking out for this at shows! Great work
John, I don't know you, but I love you and your wonderful layout! Watching this video gives me an amazing feeling of happiness and admiration :) I can't wait to finally have my own layout!
Probably one of my favourite model railways, and I do agree with that "tracks being on the edge of a board make the model railway more look like a toy railway". After I build my first railway (which it will be in OO and HO gauge), I might start building a n gauge railway that's based on a abandoned railway that I love, which that is the Lapstone zig zag railway which closed in 1897 I belive
I've always thought County Gate was a masterpiece. Nice to hear from the maker. Well filmed vid too. Thanks very much. What hacks me off is where people put buildings with no access, either by foot or vehicle. Just looks silly. 'Less is more' very often.
Such a beautiful layout! I agree landscape with railway running through it all at different angles and you did a great job of the backdrop! Most fail here and layouts look like you are falling off edge of world - ie no distant hills etc.
This isn't simply modelling or train track creating. This is actually art! Beautiful.
Not just a layout - a work of art

I've met John many times it's great see his layout here. Lovely bloke and an amazing modeller.
Amazing. Completely agree with John's philosophy on how a model railway should be constructed.
Far too many layouts look like toys.
Superb! An abundance of lush scenery surrounding the railway. Fascinating futuristic DMU's.
Absolutely Fabulous. Wonderful diorama, modelling and commentary
Amazing layout and just what i hope to achieve in my lifetime.
When I first saw a picture of this on Google I had to stair at it a couple of times before I realised it was a model!
