I am a trained photographer working now as a communications and marketing person with a focus on new energies. Perhaps that is why I have such great respect for well-made pictures and scenes - such as those implemented on this model railway and which this video conveys to us. Concerning the railway I'd like to say, very nice scenery, great trains and astonishingly working precision of the technic. I also appreciate the way the video was made. Presented with excellent vision and authenticity, without exaggeration or click-seeking attitude. Very well done & you have a new follower. You made my day Manfred
Wow ! What a gorgeous layout. And what a lovely gentleman. Seeing him sitting there, in his 80s, still modelling, is wonderful. Hope I'm still going then. Love the scenic cameos.Well done Ken.
Sadly Ken Payne passed away in December 2023, may he rest in peace. The layout as of early 2024 is looking for a new home, and the locomotives will now be running on Pete Watermans layout.
That is the most beautiful model railway I have seen so far. His colors were spot on. I happen to reside in the states as an audio engineer, and once again I find the wonderful people who invented the English language, an endless source of amazement. It is widely known that Englishmen make the finest mixing consoles in the world. Let it also be known that they make the finest model railways. Really fine job here...excellent work...His colors for the backdrop were really top notch....much respect from st. Louis, by the Missisippi.
I first met "Uncle" Ken well over 50 years ago when he visited us on his way down to have a business meeting with Mr Pritchard of Peco. I subsequently saw Tyling and he inspired me to build many of my own layouts, my last GWR branchline layout Ken saw and gave his seal of approval - high praise indeed! I have visited his "Last Great Project" several times, and it just doesn't get any better than that.
Brilliant layout! Some lovely engines on the layout and some stunning landscaping and scenery. I have a small 00 gauge layout but this is in another league. Nice guy too, very modest.
A splendid railway, and a good operating philosophy to have. I run my model railways in the same way, no timetables or plans, I just run the trains to give plenty of action and get the goods and passengers where they need to be.
I speak english little little but i want to say you that this layout is wonderful. I live in Florence and i know the beautiful things!!!!! Marry Christmas. Luciano Lepri
Excellent modelling, so different to the ubiquitous GWR. Not many would know the LMS went as far a Swansea (or even Bridgwater in Somerset via the S&DJR Branch from Edington Jct).
Absolutely Amazing layout. I reckon I'm in love with this one. Well done Ken. You are looking great for your age. Take Care! Best Wishes, to you and your family. :-) :-)
Gosh I remember Ken Payne's Tyling branch, it was practically the first ever edition of the 'Railway Modeller' that I ever read! It was very impressive too for all its simplicity of layout.
Beautiful model railroad and great video. I would like to see a panoramic view,of all of these layouts to give an idea of 5he scope of all that is there. Thanks very much. J.J. Gloucester City, NJ.
Wow what a spectacular railway!! Very very well done! I'm sure it's builder and it are now long gone from whenever this was filmed. That said does anyone know what Dr. Preston's LNWR railway was called that he and his son ran ? I've been hoping to see if there is TH-cam of it available as well.
I’ve been modeling for 40 years now and started with N scale then Ho or OO all the way to where most of us older guys end up with O scale . I model the Union Pacific and Santa Fe . Love the O scale a I scale
ken is a very funny guy,he had me laughing all the way through this, and that layout must be one of the best ive ever seen,,it will make a superb video.
Having been a Settle and Carlisle fanatic all my life and a modeller for some 50 plus years, I can truly say that this really is the epitome of a wonderful Sand C layout. However I think I will keep to N gauge as I only have a 22ft shed!! This was my latest involvement...I was responsible for the trackwork and electrics (phase 1) of Howards exhibition layout www.spaldingmodelrailwayclub.org.uk/armathwaite.html It was featured in January 2012 BRM!
This video contains no mention of cost. I would be interested in the value of particular items such as the locomotives, and the total cost of all the models in the layout. I have been looking at developing an O gauge layout, but so far have found the costs make it impossible. Is there a way to do this echonomically?
I remember seeing this layout in the Railway Modeller when it was new. It looks like it has changed a bit over the years (or maybe my memory has faded). It's a fantastic layout but everything is way too clean. It needs some weathering (many wagons are still lettered MR in the late 30's looking like they left the paint shops yesterday).
We Yankees could use some closed captioning.. Tough to make out allot of your Brit jargon.. and a little too much echo, too, toot toot, to boot !! Also, odd coincidence that the name "Kadee" MRR Co.(& Micro Trains) in the US is formed from founding brothers Ken and Dale; thus initials K D becoming their logo: 'Kadee', as we visit here, at Kendale !!!.... Mark, Los Angeles
EM Gauge is the same scale as 4mm but the track is at a gauge of 18mm (EM=Eighteen Millimetres). It's to give a more closer representation of the track gauge in real life where as 00 gauge is slightly narrower at a gauge of 16.5mm.
hi everyone ,if anyone else needs to find out about how to build a model railroad layout try Vaxicorn Railroaders Membership Guide (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my neighbor got amazing success with it.
What on earth are you talking about ? He's a nice old English guy in the traditional mould that relaxes in the way he wants to after his magnificent work.
Far too much of two men just sitting with `conversation`. Voices should`ve been over videos of the trains which are far better to look at. Beautiful layout and a credit to it`s builder. Needs a new narrator ...................
The grass is very flat, like a mat or just covered with felt. “Watch With Mother” used to be a kid’s tv program. I regret saying that now and I think it’s really lovely. Everyone has their own vision of the little worlds they build in layouts which makes it all so interesting. Reading my comment now, it feels a bit rude. Maybe I should delete it?
JAZZ MAN I understand now. If it's any consolation I didn't read what you wrote as rude at all, and it must be said that in many ways I agree with you. This layout is certainly a relic of a time when fine-scale modelling was in its infancy, but standards and methods have evolved ten-fold now, and I have to say that Ken's scenic modelling wouldn't hold up to modern exhibition standards. I emphasise "scenic modelling" as his buildings and structures are utterly superb, but his scenic modelling is very primitive, especially for a decades long project. But Ken was of a generation of railway modelling pioneers, and we have to appreciate them in the context of their time.
FP Ah, knowing more about the modeller makes a difference. It is good that it gives the nostalgic feeling. Now when I look at it I will enjoy it all the more.
JAZZ MAN Context is key. Ken is legendary in the model railway scene and his EM Gauge layout "Tyling Branch" back in the 1950's, which is mentioned in this video, was truly breaking grounds. He and many other modellers; Roye England, Alan Downes, Cyril Freezer, John Ahern, the Rev. Peter Denny, among many others who are too numerous to count, were stalwarts in the field of railway modelling and were the ones who had to develop techniques that didn't exist at the time, all sadly now passed away. It's too easy now to say that their layouts are not realistic, and by today's standards they aren't… but if it wasn't for them the hobby wouldn't be where it is today. These great pioneering modellers have mostly all published great books over the decades, imparting all their experience and knowledge, and their writings are truly invaluable resources for new-comers into the hobby. Railway modelling has become too commercial now in my opinion, and there is now little true modelling involved. When I worked in a model shop too often would I see adults buying Hornby train sets that were aimed at children, ready-made trees etc. on a whim with absolutely no idea what they were doing. It's fine for an instant fix, if you just want to play with a train and watch it go around in circles, but these are the sort of people who get bored and give up after a few months. To truly embrace the hobby one must learn the history of the hobby, the history of real railways, research, choosing a prototype and learning modelling techniques without relying on commercial products. In summary, some modern layouts might look objectively more realistic, but they feature more commercially made, off the shelf products; whereas Ken built EVERYTHING (even the locomotives) in this video from scratch. In that context, Ken’s “Kendale” layout is truly very impressive indeed. Again, context is key.
I am a trained photographer working now as a communications and marketing person with a focus on new energies. Perhaps that is why I have such great respect for well-made pictures and scenes - such as those implemented on this model railway and which this video conveys to us. Rest in Peace Ken Payne, you have now left this life, your wonderful Railway in Miniutre will inspire people for generations to come.

Marvellous! I Never saw such a beautifull gauge 0 modelling railroad! The result of years I assume. Congratulations!
This is easily one of the best layouts I have ever seen. So beautiful.
Thank you Ken for letting us into your lovely work of heart and the memories of a time when was much slower and much more glamorous, thank you,Graham.
Thank you for sharing this and for the interview. Beautiful trains and layout!
This is marvellous! Respect! I hope you'll enjoy your hobby for many years! Greetings from Eric from the Netherlands.
What an amazing o gauge layout. I am lost for words. Well done.
Brilliant layout! Some lovely engines on the layout and some stunning landscaping and scenery. I have a small 00 gauge layout but this is in another league. Nice guy too, very modest.
Back in the 1980s I used to read Railway modeller and Ken Payne often had great modelling tips and articles which were always fascinating.
Delighted to have found this - what an amazing layout as well as a beautiful house and garden . . . . if only! Thanks for sharing.
A splendid railway, and a good operating philosophy to have. I run my model railways in the same way, no timetables or plans, I just run the trains to give plenty of action and get the goods and passengers where they need to be.
Ken,
This is absolutely splendid work, and true inspiration for fellow train modelers' You deserve an A+ rating... well done!
Outstanding layout. Superbly captured on film, lovely commentary.
I speak english little little but i want to say you that this layout is wonderful. I live in Florence and i know the beautiful things!!!!!
Marry Christmas.

Florence is stunning. You certainly know what looks beautiful if you live there
Nothing like the realism of O scale.
RIP to the Ken Payne and hope the layout gets a new home. I heard the models have been sold to Pete Waterman.
Beautiful layout. I like the still at 11:05 and the timber merchant at 14:14 is very nicely modelled.
Excellent modelling, so different to the ubiquitous GWR. Not many would know the LMS went as far a Swansea (or even Bridgwater in Somerset via the S&DJR Branch from Edington Jct).
Love the model and running but I suppose it is/was know all Tony Wright that organised all the midland stock to run on GWR, yes?
Absolutely Amazing layout. I reckon I'm in love with this one. Well done Ken. You are looking great for your age. Take Care! Best Wishes, to you and your family. :-) :-)

His home was insane! It looked like a mansion in a story book. He must have done very well in his career.

Oh yes... This is the reason I love British railway modeling!
Alex, amended, thanks for pointing it out.
I live in the US and also do 1930 s area RR in New England . Very well do Sir.
I love it all I got is a green board with the track and trains

Some RTR O gauge can be as expensive as OO now. A small shunting O layout might cost the same as a OO medium/large
If you have to ask how much it costs....
i like the music it sounds like christmas!
Very nice. Commendable for realistic train speeds.
Very charming layout beautiful
Dr Campbell, keep it simple and you will find the costs will come down

It times like watching this video where I revaluate if I should stick with OO or switcher something bigger
I know that super detailing with HO is fantastic; but with O it can be taken to the next level. Just an excellent layout. Full Stop
Nice video, great Railway.
Seeing those two guys talking I wanted to tell them: "Just play with the damn trains!"
The interviewer had too much ti say .
What a great set up. The cost to do this?
How is Ken Payne doing now?
Simply wonderful - a dream
The john Allen of great Britain, iam a o gauge three rail lionel, this British railways are growing on me.
Very nice layout.
Very nice model railroad layout
Great video, but no sign of Kingstorre. Is the title correct?
Fantastic layout.
Absolutely awesome!!!
Great Work, Well Done!
Magnificent!
i understood about 00 gauge being toyish it does kinda feel toyish the larger scales is what i call models
Superb !
The best backscene ever??
Is the pipe ever lit?
Me noticing this was 8yrs ago
a great layout
Watch it, It's A1 layout.
