One of my favourite layouts, redolent of the atmosphere of the East Midlands in the 1950s/60s, my spotting days based in Derby.

Sad day that warehouse was demolished (hoping it would become Art block for Demontfort University or apartments), along with Kirby & West Dairy Bottling plant with its vibrant glazed fiance front along with adjoining Great Central Goods office building. Lattice Bow Bridge. This was the 90's. Upperton Road Viaduct was also demolished. Not a Leicester lad, but visiting older sister, but would see the sad demise of BR diesels, few LUL rolling stock coaches, at A E Piggott & Sons Scrapyard. I lived in Yorkshire not far from a busy through line feeding Caldervalley Power Station. Oil and Coal from spur sidings at Lillands Farm. At weekends were diesel hauled passenger excursions. Leeds/Huddersfield to Blackpool. Yup I'm 1965. So remember it all well.

This layout is a great favourite of mine. Too right what Derek says about being involved with a model railway club and being involved in a large layout group. I have similar interest in mainline modelling and real locations, so indoors I go for N Gauge which is fictitious main line. However, I'm currently building Scale 7 wagon kits for a club model of Bow Locomotive Works on the North London Railway's Poplar Docks branch in the East End. It's a line that some ex-colleagues at Stratford used to work over, but by the time I got on the railways it was taken over by the DLR and funnily enough, our club's S7 group leader is a retired civil engineer who was in charge of DLR track alignment at the time.
    It's all most deeply rewarding.

Like all layouts that are a cut above, the most enjoyable element is the evocative sense of a time and a place. That's how I judge the success of a project.

My Great Grandfather was a signaller at the box near Fosse Road, & lived in Bonchurch Street which backed onto the Rally. I can remember going with my Grandad on a train pulled by a steam engine in the mid 60’s going up to Nottingham. Then in the 70’s spent many a long 9 week summer holiday playing on the “rally” between Tudor Road, Bonchurch Street & fishing off the wharf in theRiver Soar & Grand Union Canal at West Bridge. I've stood on that road bridge, the timber yard was still in business, and the goods yard became the infamous Vic Berry's when I was there. I started my railway career at Coalville so have also worked over that railbridge at the engine shed entrance end.

Wonderfull layout, spent my time watching this video and separately trying to find back places and buildings on google maps, amazing how much still can be found, altough most of the ralway yards themselves are redeveloped. But found some of the bridges, the arches, the wagon shop? and a lot of the houses and some of the industrial buildings, all still in existance today.

After the GCR closed eventually the trackway became a green route into the city. For 30 years I managed it as part of Leicester Riverside. This layout is as spot on as any layout can be, I just wished I had access to this whilst working as it would be a fantastic tool to bring the past to life. Well done to all involved.
Ps do you want to know where the catering van dumped its broken crockery so you can add that for extra realism lol.

I think the bus is the wrong colour. I was born in 1952, and grew up in Leicester. The Corporation buses were mainly purple, with a cream window surround when I was a kid. They only switched to mainly cream with a purple stripe, like the one on the bridge here, later, in the 1960s. Well... if the layout is supposed to model 1948-1963, I suppose it might just scrape in, as I think they did start to roll out the new livery in the early 60s. Certainly an impressive effort, and mostly it does look very familiar. I particularly like the allotments - very typical feature of the time.

Indeed nice looking modern commercial model steam locos, that become shy when faced with a gradient ! I quickly found steam tender locos from the current manufacturers couldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding when hauling real life 12/13 car trains up a 1 in 100. Virtually all have had to have anything up to 150g extra weight added internally to make them perform, as well as their real life counterparts.
Nice to see there are a few real Model Railways still around? Not impressed with the increasing number of childish DCC toy train sets with their nice scenery but total lack of comprehension when it comes to operation !!!!

My late brother in law had a 009 layout and that would take about 3 hours to set up from arrival to running, that included hoovering the track followed by intensive track cleaning. There was normally 5 people involved, as the layout required 3 operators, allowing two to take a break. Hope this helps.
