    I used to have one of these, mine had different speakers with Huge, two to three times the size of those magnets. they were perfectly square magnets. The weight of the combo was truly ridiculous. it had to have casters. I was 18 at the time and still struggled to carry it. I eventually got rid of it after carrying it into a gig one night up a set of stairs it was so heavy the shitty centre handle snapped under its own weight and the metal core of he strap sheared off and stabbed me in the hand. Seriously deep injury involving hospital and multiple stitches. Doctor said it was millimetres from my artery. Fucking thing nearly killed me. Research showed that it was Ted Nugent's idea, who was a fender artist at the time, who was following on the Pete Townsend bandwagon of more watts equals bigger balls.
    The coolest thing about that amp was the removal of the trem/vib circuit and the inclusion of a active tube driven parametric eq. The audiophile Hifi enthusiast that purchased it off me lost the entire cabinet rebuilt the amp into a beautiful mahogany cabinet. He now uses it to drive his £20.000 vintage tannoy speaker system at home. I've still never heard anything like it to this day. The guy was genius. It went to a good home

      In case any kids here don’t know, Ted Nugent used 3-8 of these at a time, all dimed, and each one was run through a dual showman 2x15 cab. Not sure if the 2x12 speakers ran at same time or only the 2x15

    I would have never thought to improve a Twin by making it louder. It must have been an interesting board meeting the day that decision was made.
    I ordered my '71 Twin with JBLs... having no master volume, the only gigs where I could crank it to distortion were outdoors.
    Very nice demo, your Twin sounds beautiful. You might need to hand out ear muffs to the audience, though. 😊

    Thanks so much for the demo 👍
    I have a 1975 non reverb version, makes more sense to me as they don’t use the 6C10 valve.
    Have to say an excellent unsung amp, the eq can get you any tone you want. And don’t let reviews or”know all“
    Forums mislead you, when you adjust the gain, passives and eq you can get a glorious sound at levels you don’t have to wear ear defenders ( no disrespect intended)
    Knobs are there to be twiddled 😄
    Yes the inbuilt distortion is shite, so what ? Don’t use it.
    How many Twin users use a non modified normal channel?
    Again thanks for all your videos man, great job great playing
    All the best
    T

    I have this amp. I built a separate case for the chassis. Mine has the huge square magnets. I also had it modified to disable the distortion effect, and to be switchable between 25 and 100 watts (2 6L6's removed). So now it's basically a Twin Reverb.

    Hi Johan, I recently managed to acquire a Fender Super Twin for only Au$300.00, it's actually the chassis that's been fitted into the wooden cabinet for a Blackface Fender Bassman, my Super Twin is the one without the reverb circuit though, I'm going to be doing some restoration work on it soon even though the guy who sold it to me says that it does work, going to buy a set of new preamp valves for it, but I think the six STR 6L6 Valves in it are most likely still okay, I need to get a Quad Box to plug it into before I start gigging with it, or at least a 2 X 12 Cab that can handle at least 400 Watts Peak, it's a cool restoration project though.

    It's a generally hated amp but some great players love them. Phil Emmanuel (Tommy's bro) used to visit a store I worked in and eventually owned. He always said the Super Twin was one of the very best Fender amps ever made but the problem was that hardly anyone knew how to set them for a good tone. The tone is there but you have to work for it a little. They make an absolutely killer bass guitar head through the right cab too. Man they are LOOOUUUD!

    Love this amp for practice or local gigs, hated it for the road. Took one on tour '78-'79 across Western Canada by bus in winter, and it broke constantly. Spent all my breaks with a soldering iron and cursing, even with amp moved in road case & tubes pulled & stored separately. Build quality was very, very sloppy. So, mixed memories, although I love the sound.

    With the Les Paul, you've nailed the tone of early 70's heavy psych groups as Morly Grey, Top Drawer and Hindenburg Lyon, that i'm pretty sure that they've all used Fender sounding clones like Traynors, and even a mexican guitarist from the 70's called Armando Nava, leader of the psychedelic band los Dug Dug's, used a silverface Twin Reverb in recordings, while in gigs used Acoustic amps, but with the difference that he used an SG and surprisingly enough, he also nailed the John Cipollina's tone, that was basically made from a custom made SG and gigantic hybrid stack of blackface Fenders and solid state Standells.

      It’s great to hear all the esoteric pieces of information that pull it all together. One can infrequently run into one of these amps in a California pawnshop, usually dusty off in a corner. The more dust on the price tag, The more money you subtract from your offer. Know what you’re buying though, I think there’s 11 tubes in there of which two are 3 in 1, Compactron types, and a With a layout that looks nothing like some of the thoughtful well laid lead dress One would find in a TrainWreck, Early Cornford, Matchless, or Roccaforte amplifier.

    I'm not a fan of Fender amps
    But I do have a soft spot the super twin series.
    But I had no idea they were this versatile.
    It's precisely this sort of amp that defines why tube amps are still so sort after.

    I have the same amp minus the reverb. It is truely a magical tone, and window cracking. Must wear at least 18 db ear protection. Found it 7 years ago in a used guitar shop for $500. If it didn't weigh 100 lbs, I'd take it to bed and sleep with it. To say I love it, is an understatement.

    Yup, I had one once. Bought in a pawn shop for $350, I took it home and resoldered the reverb unit. I usually paired it with a Ross Distortion pedal and an old Strat. SRV all day, man!

    I played a Firebird through one of theses and it was the richest sound ever . It was sitting in a flight case in perfect condition as basically it was sat up to play gigs and laid down for moving around . I asked if I could put one of these in my loft where my guitars are to play -not a chance as at 28 kg plus I’d need a block and tackle to move it ! I have now bought an old Marshall AVT 100 at 24 kg it’s a lightweight and remains though on the ground floor but still hanker for one of these beasties!

      When I was a youngster I moved a Sunn Colosseum with JBL’s up the skinny staircase of my aunts large farmhouse. One stair at a time it was tough but Worth it when I could open up the windows and blast it out to the island. There was also a set of Electro Voice eliminator’s, With 215’s and a Horn, but they were too wide to go up through the door or the stairs. I would’ve had to take the door off the hinges and remove the handrail. She would not have been happy.

    Wow this beast really has it's own thing going on Jon. It sure doesn't sound like any twin I've ever heard but that's not a critique.
    As we all know the old twins give great clean sounds but aren't really known for producing good sounding distortion.
    This one how ever really DOES have a great kind of rude low rent distortion that slaps you around in a good way like when you pass out dead drunk slouched over the toilet bowl and your buddy give you a couple of quick smacks to wake your ass up!
    This is the sonic version of that scenario. lol

    This was the amp that Ted Nugent rocked back in the 70's. I used to have one. WAY to much volume. Ridiculous. I added some outboard distortion and a Les Paul with Super Dist in bridge. In this case I REALLY like the way it sounds here with that Strat. Killer tone.

    those speakers say fender, not pyle? and what years did they come out with these amps? notice it had a distortion knob on it? I love the tone this amp produces, and the reverb, it is that fender iconic sound. love it. very versatile amp. the new reissue amps are not even close to the original older amps.

  • @277southtombob

    I’ve always loved the sound of these but they just have so much power and more volume than I could ever use. I’ve always thought a Super Twin preamp on a Pro Reverb power section would be a great sounding amp.

    I got a twin reverb I dug out of hiding with 2 monstrous Electrovoice SRO speakers with massive magnets. They are now 50 years old.How are they apt to sound? do the cones rot or change. I am thinking of getting new speakers. But for the moment, they are sitting idle. this is a 71 twin for sweet sound. Aren't SRO's a little heavy for that ? I don't have a guitar at this time except for an accoustic.

    • @voxpathfinder15r

      It's no big deal really - it's only 2.6 dB louder than a 100 watt amp, which means it's barely detectable by the human ear as being louder than a 100 watt amp. It will have much more clean headroom though! So by default you'll have to turn it loud in order to get crunch. But I am sure a marshall Plexi going through two 4x12 cabs at 100 watts will still seem just as loud if not louder than this 2x12 combo when they're both going full blast.

    • @RumzDizzle
      @RumzDizzle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      VoxPathfinder15R good to know! Thanks for the info.

    • @gringopig
      @gringopig 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      VoxPathfinder15R So that's nearly twice as loud lol. An addition of 3dB acoustic sound pressure is twice as loud. It's logarithmic lol

    • @voxpathfinder15r
      @voxpathfinder15r 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gringopig Doubling the acoustic pressure does indeed correspond with a 3dB change, and doubling the power of an amplifier from say 50 watts to 100 watts indeed corresponds with a 3dB change. But if our ears perceived this as double the volume - where precisely would the logarithmic be? The human ear is logarithmic and it perceives 10dB in sound pressure difference as twice as loud. This means in order to double the loudness of a 100 watt amplifier, you would need to increase it to 1,000 watts! What you said was entirely incorrect - because it would imply a 100 watt amplifier is twice as loud as a 50 watt amplifier to the human ear - and we all know that simply is not true. So.......LOL back to you!
