Hey Johan. I have an idea for a comparison: Fender 59 bassman (original vintage) vs bassman reissue (early 90s 5F6A) vs bassman ltd reissue (modern). What do you think about it?
The tighter tone of the Twin is certainly partly down to four 5881 rather than two in the Bassman. The speakers will be more controlled with the paralleled tubes most noticeably in the bass.
enjoyed the vid as usual! i like that you play both strat and les paul on your last videos. how about making some clean tone comparrison as well? cheers !
This is wonderful. The biggest tonal difference between these amps is the speaker configuration. The output stages are more similar than dissimilar and everything up to the phase inverter is more or less identical.
12s all the way for me! Thanks for posting this one! I'm currently cleaning up a Fender Blues DeVille 4x10 and it looks like I'll be making a new baffle and installing a couple 12s (I was thinking of going with a 15, but I'll go with 12s).
Another great video👍. I would love to hear the Bassman vs jtm45, then the bassman through the Marshall cab, and vice versa. In theory they would sound pretty similar
a terrific video once again Johan! I personally thought the Twin had the best overall tone, the Bassman was great too, but it sounded a little 'scooped' to me. keep 'em coming guys, you make some of the best videos on YT imo. :)
@@JohanSegeborn I know I am late to the party - but what do you think how much of the tonal difference is 410 vs 212? I am wondering if a Tweed Twin HP circuit in a 410 combo cab would be the best addition to my amps
Thanks a bunch for this demo! It would be great if you ever had the chance to do a demo of a narrow panel tweed (twin/bassman) through something like 4x12 ceramic speakers or even 8x12 ceramics to really hear what the circuits are capable of ran through a speaker compliment that isn't underpowered relative to the amp. Maybe even a tweed bassman through a marshall 8x12 with greenbacks in parallel to se how much it really differs from a JTM 45. Cheers,
If you want to hear what a 59 Twin through more suitable speakers sounds like, listen to any recent Joe Bonamassa concert. He runs his through Celestion Classic Lead 80's!!
Great video! Bassman seems like the capable big brother that does it with ease and Twin seems to be trying really hard to prove it can - both are amazing but Bassman seems more "dynamic".
I used to only like the sound of one tweed amp; the bassman. Now that I hear these amps side by side, the twin has more mids when overdriven, and the bassman sounds thin. Listening to the bassman videos with the strat and les paul, I still love the bassman and the cleans and dirt sound terrific. Fenders are amazing.

Hey, Johan! You got there an electric 12 hanging on the wall. Would you make a compare between this guitar and Rickenbacker 12 string? That would be so great!
Would the low powered tweed twin sound closer to the bassman? Just finished your video of the high vs low twins, I think that the low and bassman might sound more similar then these two in this video. I know that's not the point to make them sound the same, but curious.. if they would be.
My vote is for the twin, but like most have said, both sound great. Keep 'em coming Johan! Would still love to see/hear your comparison between real amp and modeling processor (ie Ax FXII, Kemper and Line 6 - either Helix or Firehawk FX). Thanks for all you do!

those amps are quasi similar in circuitry...What you'll hear is a speaker difference mainly. All those tweed amps have the same "vibe". The bassman can do "twin" because it's very versatile.
Hey Johan, I'm loving this comparison. I have an all original 1960 Fender Tweed Bassman (in excellent cond) posted on my reverb.com store but after listening to the vids on them, I may just keep it for myself. Which did you prefer?
Johan, there are plenty mustang reviews and comparisons - that's not the point. It occurs to me that they sound a bit like the same amp with different speakers, the Twin with reissue G12M's and the Bassman with late 60's/early 70's G12M's.
Love your videos. I own 30 plus Tweeds. Suggestion, rather than compare both amps at same settings, try to get them at similar Volumes. That would be a better judgement on tone comparison
+buffdoc46 Thanks, glad to hear it. Yeah, for live applications that may be more interesting, but for recording I think similar gain provides a better judgement.
With all respect, I have to agree with Johan on this one. On tape, the desired gain level is most significant. first of all, thanks for the comparison! i guess the main difference here are the speakers. are you able to test them both on the same cab/speakers? that would be interesting. i predict they will sound much more closely. the bassman appeared kind of short on volume here, too.
RorysIrishTour I bet after 58 years of service you'll be short on volume too! The Chicago Jensen's are pretty inefficient, low to mid 80's sensitivity. Those new Italian P12N's are in the high 90's. Basically, the Twin would be easily twice as loud in person. With both amps using similar speakers with close efficiency it would be pretty close. The 5F8A Twin is capable of about 65-70 watts. Limited by the single GZ34/5AR4 rectifier that can only produce a maximum of 250ma and an undersized power transformer.
Very nice comparison, Johan! Love the sounds! My spontaneous initial thought was that the Twin is maybe the late '60s/early '70s Marshall SL compared to the Bassman, much tighter and more upper mid presence. Makes one wonder how it would've been if Jim Marshall had copied the Twin instead, ha-ha!
Mats Frånlund Circuit wise, the only difference between a 5F6A and 5F8A are two more octal sockets. The Twin's output transformer is literally twice the size of the Bassman's OT. So, Jim would have still built the same amp.
both are smoking hot. if you prefer more treble,go with the twin. more bottom end,go with the bass man. great shootout altogether. one is not really better than the other,it's just your preference of tone.
The HP Twin sounds more rough I think ... a more direct sound, cuts through the mix in a really pleasant way ... a very distinctive and present tone in the hi-mid frequencies. I would be interested to hear the Joe Bonamassa "signature" HP Twin, compared to an original one ... These amps are 80 watts, right ?
Both amps are killer. Each slightly favoring a certain style of playing. But the real question is when is the beard making a comeback? That beard is what dreams are made of.
comparing the schematics, the signal path is identical between the two amps. the differences are in the power section, the bassman has two 5881 power tubes without grid resistors and the twin has four 5881 tubes with 1500 grid resistors going only to the addition 2 tubes. the only other differences i see are the Negative feedback resistor being 27k for the bassman and 56k for the twin, and the HT voltages being 650VCT for the bassman and 600VCT for the twin. the main tone differences are from the speakers and cabinet differences. the twin shoulda been the "bass" amp and the bassman shouldve been the "guitar" amp IMO

although I oun a 59 twin after listening to your video trying to be as fair as possible.i feel that the twin had much better sound than the bassman.the mids were much cleaner without being sharp sounding.
it would have been nicer to hear the Bassman against the low power Twin, i think it would have been closer. My money is on the Bassman between these two amps. I like the lower power through the 10s.
The high powered twin sounds better... to me because it has more headroom.... I'd like to see a comparison of similar wattage....a bassman is 45 watts vs a 85 watt high powered twin.... if they did the low powered it be a better comparison

All along i was thinking i can't believe i prefer the twin then the riff at 3:45 came in.. "thats the sound"
although I oun a 59 twin after listening to your video trying to be as fair as possible.i feel that the twin had much better sound than the bassman.the mids were much cleaner without being sharp sounding.
single coils really come alive with these amps
there must be internet in heaven for you to be able to put this kinda stuff on you tube.thumbs up every1 god this is the best
+Tone Fingerz Thanks my friend :-)
Ri vs orginal bassman?
hmmm hard decision Johan...i think the bassman had more brass ..but the H.P. was better meaning a little more trebley..love the video
+Robbie Russell Thanks Robbie!
I think I do prefer the Bassman, it's smoother. The twin has more high end bite. But I think something right inbetween the two would be perfect!
+xMasterxRazorx Thanks, the Bassman has the original speakers whereas the Twin has Reissue speakers. Cheers
So maybe a high powered twin with warmer speakers is the answer
it would have been nicer to hear the Bassman against the low power Twin, i think it would have been closer. My money is on the Bassman between these two amps. I like the lower power through the 10s.
They sound similar. The HP Twin sounds fuller and less compressed than the Bassman
Very similar you can tell the twin is a little brighter with humbuckers
The high powered twin sounds better... to me because it has more headroom.... I'd like to see a comparison of similar wattage....a bassman is 45 watts vs a 85 watt high powered twin.... if they did the low powered it be a better comparison
cant go wrong with either amp!
I want them both! But for my ears, the twin takes the easy win. The bassman just doesn't have it like the high power.
You couldn't find a crow bar big enough to pry me off that HP Twin!
+Matt Fields haha! :-) Cheers!
😉59 BASSMAN all the way the best😊 chimey, jangle loose natural tone/feel😆
Bassman for me! :-)
this is explains why bonamassa uses pairs of each together :)
I HAVE REISSUES AND ORIGINALS THEY ALL SOUND GOOD..NOT ONE BETTER THAN THE OTHER....CHEERS
+ERIC EDMUND Cheers!
Now plug the amps into each others speakers then into a 4x12.
and there folks is Bonamassa's rig right there...!
Although both sound great, i liked the twin the most in so many levels.
+G ts Thanks!
