Rare sighting of Horton plans leopards family

- Horton Plains National Park is one of the highest biodiversity hotspots in Sri Lanka. The park is a World Heritage Site. Horton Plains is especially popular with both local and foreign tourists for its endemic bird and other species. But now Horton Plains National Park is one of the most visited mountainous places in Sri Lanka.
Over the past two years, the number of mountain tigers has increased due to the decrease in the number of red vehicles entering the park.
When we visited Horton Plains National Park, some very rare pictures were taken on camera with the tiger and three cubs.
Please change the description to Leopards. There are no tigers in Srilanka. Great to see these animals again. The last I saw a leopard at Horton plains was when I was a child in the seventies! Thanks guys! Keep those pesky four wheel Safari vehicles out of Horton Plains and safeguard the ecology! Beautiful!
Panthera pardus kotiya
@@redipilitrader921 I'm no big cat aficionado, but "Panthera Pardus" is the scientific name for a leopard. Only the subspecies we find in our island gets the 'kotiya' part at the end probably because that's how natives' address it (or that's how etymology works!). And not because it's actually a kotiya( a tiger 🐅, the one you find in India and Bangladesh). 🙂 So, this is, absolutely, unequivocally, and unambiguously a LEOPARD 🐆.
p.s. Did you see how even the smileys change from leopard 🐆 to Tiger 🐅? Which one looks more like the one we have in Lanka? 🙂 Peace. 🤝

@@kapilani8024 So, what's a 'Diviya'? 😿. I totally forgot about the term 'Wyagraya'. I think the issue arises with the misuse of the term Kotiya by locals as an overarching term to identify any harmful bigcat. And the lack of strict nomenclature to clearly juxtapose Diviya and Kotiya. 🤔
@@pramorio I think "kotiya" and "diviya" are used for the same animal, but the tiger was wrongly mentioned as kotiya as a result of calling tamil tigers as "koti".

I was Manager Upper Ohiya Estate and one division Giniheriya was on top of Horton Plains a,Close to the southern escarpment .I know the area very well

Please keep to the path. And don't take the ugly vehicles. I have walked up to worlds end and back 20 miles. There were no leopards then. I am very worried for them now if people start going up in hoards.

Tiger is 'Wyagraya'. Leopard is 'Kotiya'.

@@PubuduKarunarathne No. The leopard's scientific name itself is Panthera pardus kotiya. The Kotiya part is in the name itself. Wyagraya and kotiya are definitely not the same. Also, diviya is a feline smaller than a leopard. Eg: Hadun diviya (Fishing cat).
