Like every hobby, you'll hit a point where you'll need to take a break from it to rediscover your passion for it.

I hear you. I’ve built a collection of over 15.000 lp’s / cd’s / 7”’s over the past 30 years and then, at some point, I realized I felt kinda trapped by my collection itself. I then started to think that what had began as a passion it had turned over the decades into a mental trap that lead me to think about music as “possession” as opposed to “pure enjoyment”. It took me a while to make this decision but I eventually got to the point where I downsized the whole thing and now I’m left with a little less than 3000 pieces. Collecting records is surely a great passion / hobby but considering today’s tools and opportunities given by digital formats and streaming platforms one can still enjoy the most important part of a record (which is the music IMO) without amassing a huge pile of physical objects with all the related issues (maintenance, space, finance related stuff, deterioration and so on). I can’t deny it took me an extra dose of logic, discipline and will to get rid of most of my “beloved” stuff but now I’m really satisfied at what I kept and got back to enjoying new stuff on a daily basis without having to constantly go through the ordeal of keeping a big collection “alive”.

I went from over 2000 CDs to less than 500. I have not enjoyed listening to music and getting a new CD once in a while that much ever before.

yes I totally get that "trapped " by the collection feeling man. I have about 5k records, also collected over last 20 years. I have moved house about 5 times in last 10 years and storing or moving that amount males you really question as to "why?" especially when there is TH-cam, or Bandcamp or even dreaded spotify . I have moments when I think, ill sell one slice of it, or one genre of it I no longer am into, but i remember dojng this in the late 90's and regretting it. SO, now i have reduced my vinyl spending to maybe only 1 or 2 records every month after i have throughly listened to the album digitally and feel like its a definite "keeper' and not just an obsessive or impulse buy.

i think it's the hunter/gatherer instinct. if you can afford it, there's no harm. my good friend recently bought a new house and there was enough space to make a music/hanging out room. he lined the lower walls with shelving and out came all his vinyl. he'd kept all the records he'd bought over the years in boxes here and there. to see 30 years of all the music we'd both enjoyed consolidated in their new 'home' was absolutely fantastic. i actually got choked up. a lifetime, right there. fantastic.

I've never been much of a collector but i totally stopped collecting anything once my music got stolen. Being attached to material things has big downsides, especially if you lose them (it was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life that I'm still not totally over), not to mention how much space it takes up. There's something freeing about not having any collections to be attached to and being a minimalist, but that's just me.

I moved so many times in the past few years that I just couldn’t stand moving it anymore inspite of the joy of collecting and spinning. I realized that the sound of my speakers contributed mostly to the sound and I like organizing things digitally. I’d love to keep collecting but I also feel comfortable knowing I won’t ever have to move a collection again

I went through the exact same situation a couple years ago. When I got married and then hit my 30s, I just found myself less and less interested in buying as much physical media. Before, I had this craving to just buy ANYTHING that I enjoyed. A desire to simply grow and grow my collection. However once I had several hundred CDs and Vinyl, the burning desire to buy everything evolved into the mindset that I have now. I still love music, but now I will only buy the albums that really speak to me throughout the year. Ones that I will cherish in my collection instead of just buying whatever intrigues me. I feel like this is how hobbies evolve. I have the same outlook with my tattoo collection. I got insanely blasted in my 20s. Chest, Neck, Sleeves, Hands, Legs, Feet. Now I get tattooed every so often when I want to add another piece, instead of trying to collect as many as possible, as soon as possible.
Love the vids man! Been watching you for years. Never gets old 🤜🤛

I think as your collection starts to grow in size, and as you stated being a collector around ten years, it was my experience that I started to refine my collection as to what genres and types of records I wanted to listen to etc, there are some records I collect that do not really get played that are more for an archive, historical stuff, think folkways records. But ya overtime I sold some stuff off and narrowed in on the stuff I liked to spin or collect, so your video makes sense to me, eventually there just isn't as many records that you are looking for, unless you start to get really into jazz, which can easily lead to collecting a large amount of records.

I've slowed down hugely once I hit 1000. I only have so much space, I already own everything I want except for 1 record (DIS Hatred For Mankind) and I'm now collecting CDs again and am able to talk myself out of buying records I don't NEED. Being a collector, you need to talk yourself down sometimes.

Interesting to hear a younger collector's perspective - from a '70s child carrying a collection around for 40 years, your records are like a garden. You set the foundations, watch it grow, then brutally prune and re-plant as your tastes/perspectives change. Enjoy it - dip in and out of physical and digital when necessary. Don't follow releases, follow the seasons relevant to you as a person.

I was thinking this afternoon about its a sad fact now that my collection has grown so much I realistically will only listen to about 20% of the records I own before I die. That is a random guess but consider time and how much we will actually have to sit idle playing records. An enormous collection is impressive but its something that realistically will never be truly utilized. For this reason I have slowed down my purchases. In the beginning my rule was "only but records I view as a solid 10." That quickly faded but I should lean back into that mantra...

And then further on up the road you get the urge to start culling. I've sold/donated over half of my collection with more to go and don't miss them at all. There is only so much time in the day and for that I have my "essential listening" items. It's amazing how much music you own just to own it and not because you LOVE it. Quality over quantity.

I have definitely felt this way, many times actually. I have also been obsessed over buying records. My collection is around the same size as yours. and that feeling like you never have enough. its a sickness. But I think the key to managing it, is too try and buy the stuff you know you will love. and selling records at shows to support your hobby, also helps. It will pass. The passion always comes back.

Yeah I've mostly reverted to only purchasing albums that are a legit 9 or 10/10 in my mind...and that makes everything more continuously enjoyable; is so nice that every piece at this point has some sort of distinct meaning to it.
Content with my modest collection of a few hundred or so, averaging maybe one new album a month.

I've got about 260 records and don't listen to about 90% of them, and have started just buying CD's or tapes. I can't even imagine having 1,000+ records. That would be overwhelming IMO. I have the financial means to keep buying vinyl, but I just don't feel the desire to do it unless it's something I REALLY want to have in my collection.

You're not alone in this. I've been collecting (CDs) since the early 2000s, always at a modest pace (50-60/year) which I could keep up with. Then, in 2022, things got crazy. I think I bought around 700 albums that year and that was really overwhelming. I started to dread new release days, instead of look forward to it. I've since taken a step back (though not as much as I'd like yet) and it has brought back some excitement about new releases. In 2025, my plan is to only buy new releases (I don't stream.) No Discogs hunting or record store digging sounds very refreshing.

I don't collect vinyl (yet), but I have been collecting CDs for the past 6-ish years, and I've accumulated a hefty amount of them during that time. As far as feeling fatigued by buying them, I believe that I am in a somewhat similar state as you are with vinyl. Part of that is just because finding CD copies of albums that I love or albums that interest me at my local record stores has become more and more difficult over the years, and while yes, Discogs is certainly an option for buying CDs, I usually don't like to blind buy CDs through the web, because that method is usually more expensive than buying them in person, so I usually reserve that for albums that I already know and love.
I guess another thing that has me a bit fatigued is the amount of space that I have in my room. I'm still living with my parents atm, so my bedroom is where I currently store all of my CDs, and it feels like I might be running out of space. Not only that, but could you imagine the hassle of moving all of those CDs from one place to another? I guess that rings true for anything that you've accumulated and want to keep, but still, it's something that I'm kind of dreading having to do when the time comes.
But yeah, that's basically all I have to say in regards to this "record collecting fatigue" phenomenon. Hopefully your fatigue will, if not go away completely, at least die down somewhat.

I stopped buying vinyl for probably about 3 years after a long period of very frequent buying. I ended up culling through a good chunk of my collection, and started making cd and cassette purchases instead. Recently though I’ve started making the occasional purchase on vinyl again when I find something really special out of the blue. While I used to solely purchase my music on vinyl, I’ve come to realize that a lot of the music I’ve gotten excited about is only being released on cassette or cd, so I’ve had to expand my horizons a bit if I really want something in a physical format.

  • @Mountprospect1
    @Mountprospect1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes its definitely cyclical if you are a lifelong collector.... of anything. Enjoyment turns to deep diving, turns to obsessing, turns to overwhelming, turns to apathy.... etc etc. Personally i think its a great idea to get comfortable as quickly as possible with the idea of being able to part with areas of your collection. Purging lightens the load (literally and mentally) when the collection starts to feel a bit stale or overwhelming. It reinforces the idea of curating as oppossed to hoarding. I find its also a great way to finance the hobby instead of it eating into my main income and adversly affecting other areas of my life. These days I find I only purchase albums that really have some deep meaning or connection for me. Ones that have great pressing quality (no crazy or rare variants) that I will really sit down for and fully immerse in. Everything else (that previously I would have just bought on vinyl without even thinking about it) I tend to just stream or get on cd if its cheap enough.

It's a great way to enjoy music just like all the other options. I don't recommend needing to buy so many and I do recommend getting rid of the ones you don't enjoy by gifting them to friends, coworkers and strangers. Sometimes your just buying them, but your not doing it for the right reason. Have a been, enjoy them. Make a gold crate. If they don't make the cut, toss them in the pool! Thats my advise.

Great video. You hit many points 100%. I think selling albums you no longer want or were impulse purchases....once you see what local stores / sellers PAY for it, you feel like the Andy Kaufman biopic when he realizes his cancer treatment was FAKE. Vinyl is already too expensive to realize REAL street prices outside of Discogs are laughable. Similar to the stock and housing market in ways...the world feeds from your dreams and passions :)

I don't own anything on Vinyl from this year except for Carnal Savagery's new record which I got for $17 on Amazon on sale which i wouldn't have bought otherwise. I've actually started getting back into CD's. I always saw them as inferior to vinyl but some albums just aren't vinyl material. Some albums I see as kinda pointless to own in a big, expensive cash-grab package. Plus, CD's are often pretty cheap and a good second hand ware. They're nice little trinkets! I don't know, I'm pushing 30 and probably starting to get nostalgic for my prepubescent days when the CD was everything. But I don't really care.
I definitely hover in and out of record stores. I'm probably always going to buy vinyl but I have other things to worry about.

CDs rule. When they are produced correctly and designed nicely, I think they're the superior format. I've been collecting them since the 90s,never going to stop. Also, absolute best format for 1) extreme doom with 20+ minute long songs, 2) harsh noise/electronics/industrial,and 3) complete discography multi-disc sets.

I have lost the "Collecting bug" but I still buy a record here and there. When I was younger collecting really seemed to enhance my time, the discovery of a new band or genre the sending of cash or money order through the mail and the arrival of item in the mail was a real boost. As I get older I no longer feel a "need" to get the physical item, it is a sort of "I could take it or leave it" but as you say toward the close of your vid you have limited yourself to only extremly intriguing items. I see nothing odd about that. And if you mostly listen to "the vinyl only" I can see the problem with acquiring an LP, listeing to it a few times and then never returning to it that often. I rip my records and burn cd-rs so I don't spin the viynl for listening all that much. I realized long ago that if a band such as Incantation are going to have 20 albums that all sound the same it is better to choose your favorite of those and stick to them. If nothing new or interesting is going to be addedto the bands disography there is no doubt in my mind that listener fatigue will set in and in return become collector's fatigue. My method of approach now is to listen first, then examine the overal package of the album to see if it is worthy of the time and effort of adding to the collection. Having a massive collection is nice but sometimes the act of collecting is more rewarding than the owning once the newness is replaced by monotony. If you feel anxious after missing out on an item I would not worry much. I have been collecting a few items limited to around 200 copies and it always seems like they are ending up with plenty of copies for sale once the distros get a hold of them. There will always be a seller for a record you missed some people buy them just to flip them even for minimal profit. I have actually ordered a few from Armageddon shop, great selection and service. . Thanks for the vid. 💀🎧

I noticed this as I went further into my 30s. My interest in new releases lessened more every year. 10 years ago I would become obsessed with a particular label and monitor their release schedule to buy most of it. These days I practically only pick up reissues of old albums that interest me.

I think what your describing is inevitable for all us collectors to experience at some point, of course it’ll wear thin and burn out after collecting for a long time and basically obtaining everything you want, the trick is to just not really persue it for a while, focus on other hobbies and of course just enjoy what you have. It’s a good problem to have I suppose, I’d rather have everything and have nothing left to buy than be frustrated that I can’t get any of the albums I want.

I've honestly have hit that "fatigue" myself. Especially after my Discogs account got hacked and I suffered a loss within the family and didn't have the funds to manage that for nothing was left behind to do so. You and I have the same shelves so you can understand this. But I had roughly almost 3 Kallax shelves full. I'm down to about less than 1. So about 180-250 records more or less and I remembered that I had about 850-950. I stopped because I realized that I didn't enjoy collecting and noticed that people who have been collecting and doing content on their channel had more of a stiff grounding than I did. So the desire to collect records, became more solidifying to me. I stopped collecting religiously for about 3-4 years now. The only thing that I got was about 2 records this year. Merely because I enjoy the projects. Akhlys - House of The Black Geminus and Primitive Warfare - Extinction Protocol.

Another thing for me is the cost. Records became so expensive that I always need to think about that aspect, which makes the act of buying less enjoyable. Let's not talk about discovering records just by picking it up.

I hocked a bunch of record years ago. Just bulk nothing collected for free from randoms, but for me its price for shipping on records now, and on top on that I have moved away from a city that had a strong local record shop to grab used stuff. It has increasinly slowed down for me since 2017 till now since starting in the late 2000's

I'm not fatigued but my collection have grown alot this year so I've promised my queen to pull the break a bit. We are going on a bunch of shows so I'm putting the music money on that instead. Latest shows were Left to Die, Incantation, Toxeamia, Carnosus, Amon Amarth, The Halo Effect and Insomnium. Coming up are Hellbutcher, Discharge, Candlemass, Anvil, Dark Tranquility, Moonspell, Wolfheart and Hiraes. Coming up is also the cruise Rock at Sea. So yeah, I'll spend money on music anyhow 😅

Switch up your genres too, don’t just buy every Grindcore record ever then complain there’s nothing fun left to find lol.

LThere are 3 main reasons I stopped buying vinyl. I had so many albums that I would only listen to some of them 2 or 3 times if that, the expense and lastly storage issues.
I only buy CDs now and limit the number I buy. The other problem is at least here in England it seems that a lot of records are released on vinyl or download only so that cuts down my buying options. Also, and this may be more that I am just turning into a miserable old sod, 2024 has been a lousy year for new music

I like vinyl I really do but I’m very picky about what I would buy, so like my favourite albums I’d probably buy especially if I enjoyed the artwork because I wanted it on a 12 inch canvas (essentially).
I have variables/criteria to the point where do I want this on vinyl or not? Do I like this album enough to get on vinyl or not?
If I’m honest the artwork is the most important, I guess as long as I have answers to the previous questions above. 😜
The funny thing is you can get fatigue from absolutely anything in terms of collecting, whether it’s TV shows/movies or action figures/toy collecting, These are the things I know all too well when it comes to fatigue because it’s like why am I doing this? Do I want to continue doing this? it’s completely okay if you just wanna take a break, how long or short is completely an entirely up to you.

I blame the government. Obvious cop out, but I recently got into collecting CD’s as the 90’s is my favorite era of music so I thought CD’s would be my kind of collection. I’m very casual about it. If I’m at a show I’m pretty inclined to buy merch and a CD, more if I love the band (ie Melt-Banana, I’d’ve bought their whole discog if they had it on em). I’ll check out a record store every so often but I’ll mostly try to buy direct but that can be hard especially if the bands obscure and made one album in the 90’s then I’ll try to find it on eBay but I’ve gotta really love the album. So yeah casual about it and idc much about recent releases as I feel like their is still a lot to explore about 90’s era music that has me too focused, but that’s not too say I don’t listen to a lot of modern music as well but I know I’ll always be able to find a copy of recent material 10 years down the road than I am 90’s material when hopefully I’ll have more expendable moolah. Edit: But yes I’m still very much listening to new music almost everyday that’ll never stop! Funny thing is I don’t even have a way to play my CD’s other than my Xbox🤣

I think that with collecting anything, the ballpark of what generates that joy gets smaller the longer you do it. How often can you get an iconic album from your teen years or that first press or that new bands first lp. The rate you collect shouldn't effect your enjoyment of what you already have.

99% of what I listen to is digital. But, physical media allows the artists to add extra visual touches of personalization that cannot translate through a digital medium. Art work, bios, background on the lyrics or inspiration, or just random goofy photos of the band. These things all add a lot to the experience.

@@enri_mucca Well, I went down this rabbithole like a year ago and this is what I had found at the time.
Discogs is citing Andrew Claristidge as producer on one of the releases, which seems to be the only like verified artist credit. So I contacted him about how the collaboration works and he gave me some vague story about not knowing who it is that's sending him the stuff to edit together. Seemed fishy to me. Plus, footage of the African Imperial Wizard social media just looks like Claristidge's studio. Convenient that all live performances have the guy in KKK-style mask, so you don't know who is actually on stage.
All the pictures that are used for cover and promo art are largely by photographer Brent Stirton, who I contacted about it. He said he never heard about the AIW project and believes they jus took the images. He could not confirm that the pictures were used legally, with actual credit to his agency.
So, bottom line: It just seems super fishy and very much like marketing lies. Which seems very distasteful to me.
The sound is awesome, but pretending to be Angolan freedom fighters standing against colonizers for clout is kind of rough.

Inflation is not helping, is it? External socio-political pressures also have untold ramifications when doubt and uncertainty of the future subconsciously re-arrange our routines, consumer or other. Refining a collection also helps. You do not need to own everything; distilling it to an essence will help. Further, when you do videos on metal-adjacent genres such as neo-folk, you spread your wings a bit more and more. As a lifelong metalhead, it's good to deviate occasionally and check out other genres while maintaining the metal connection with what one already has.
