FFD, another SUPER video. Even though I layer my feet exactly as you do, I’m done and numb after a couple of hours in the Idaho winter waters, ice floating by. I haven’t seen that vest; pretty kewl. My secret, for those that don’t have such a vest, are to place hand warmers on the top of each forearm, above the second layer. Doing so keeps the hands warm. Related, I’ll send you a link to the bison(?) wool fingerless (foldback) mittens that I use to see if you like them (if you want...). I’m looking forward to the snow and to Spey casting on the ice for winter trout. Peace.
To me the most important thing about staying warm is starting out warm! On cold days I put my waders on at home and then drive to the river. I also rig my rod at home so I don't spend time at the car putting the rod together. On the way to the river I open my chemical hand warmers, they last for 8-10 hours, this way they are hot and ready to go. Lastly, when I'm swapping flies or dealing with my rig I get out of the water ... this helps my feet stay warm! I actually dress quite different than described in the video, but I not going to go into more detail.
Thanks Drew- I just use a modified GoPro chest mount that has an accessory to hold an iPhone. I put the camera setting on 4K 60FPS and x.5 wide angle. That's about it! :)
Love your vids! I’m right now trying to learn how to fly fish and I bought my own fly rod which is a good start, I also know someone who is an expert at fly fishing and he learned how to fly fish with books because his dad has never fly fished in his whole life. I also asked him if he practiced in the winter and he said yes. It was funny but that’s how you get better at casting a fly rod. In my whole life I have only went rod and reel fishing.
Amazon has a rechargeable hand warmer that I like to use in the winter. In between fishing spots or after you handle a fish you can bring your hand warmer out. It’s only like 20 bucks so it’s worth it to me. Fish on my man!
I have neck gaiters in a variety of weights. I wear them summer through winter. They help a ton when mosquitoes are out and keep the sun off my neck. In cold weather they keep my nose warm 😁great tips Dan.
Hey Dan, question for you (unrelated to this video) how stable is that pontoon boat in whitewater? I have a drift boat but giving consideration to getting a pontoon similar to yours for upper coaster rivers in Oregon. I am hoping to get away from crowds a little bit but am unsure on how stable the one man pontoon boats are. Do you ever feel unsafe in that thing? Thanks for any feedback. Phil
I've owned both - hands down, DRYFT Primo Zip GD Waders are the best. TONS more storage, thicker lower layers for durability - matched overall quality as Simms G4 at almost half the price. You can also save a little money with my coupon code (FLYFISHDAN) since I am now a pro ambassador. Cheers!
I gave up fishing with gloves and have started carrying a high quality hand towel instead. Regardless of your choice to glove or not, a hand towel is a day saver.
I wear merino wool sucks a thin synthetic base layer long underwear top and bottom Simms fleece base layer long sleeve shirt I can take off fleece lined synthetic jacket I can take off them my top layer of waders, and rain jacket as needed. also 2 pair of gloves, simms fleece foldover fingerless glove/ mitts and a backup pair. 2 PAIR OF GLOVES!!! in case one gets wet on accident. For head I have a full fleece mask/that comes down a round neck then jacket has hood. Keeps me warm in 20 degreeF days and 40's water temp.

I agree the vest is a must have. I bought one this year and I won’t leave the house without it.
Toe warmers help a lot also

I appreciate that! Welcome to my channel!
Good stuff buddy. Happy to see folks in the outdoors armed. Stay safe out there
Thank you! I typically bring along my Glock 10mm - makes me feel a bit safer in many ways for sure. Cheers!
Great tips. Need to get into the winter coat game. Have a ultralight rain jacket for hiking but it’ll wet through after a few hours
The new DRYFT rain jacket is supposed to be pretty rock solid - looking forward to putting it to the test.
Chilling! Fall seasons are so short in the northwest these days. Thanks for the great tips, helps a lot 🎣
No problem!

I warm my waders up on the drive in too - put my fingerless gloves up on the defrost heater so everything is toasty!
It's called a NECK GATOR Dan.
Thanks for the tips. Glad I found your channel.
I know right? Couldn't think of the name during the filming...Lol. Glad to have you as part of my channel! Cheers!
great tips, you should do a video on your camera setup with your phone for the chest. how do you capture your fish shots?
Thanks Drew- I just use a modified GoPro chest mount that has an accessory to hold an iPhone. I put the camera setting on 4K 60FPS and x.5 wide angle. That's about it! :)
I lik those black army wool fingerless gloves. Other gloves can freeze solid in freezing weather.

Great tip! I'll have to check that out!
........ also, on rain gear, what do you do to waterproof your jacket?...... is that a 23 on your hip?
Here's what DRYFT says about my new rain jacket: DWR coated, 20,000mm waterproof rated fabric, fully taped seams and water-resistant zippers.
That is a Glock 10mm :))
Great information FFD. I always avoid wearing cotton. It can kill you if it gets wet and it's cold out. Just thought i would throw that out there.
They call cotton 'death fabric' for a reason.
I'm with you Neil! No cotton!

Thanks Rosie - great tip on the gaiter. Check out a Thermacell - one of the best mosquito deterrents out there today - no more deet!
Great video, Dan! Totally unrelated question: what's the holster that you're using for your second rod?
Thanks! That is my O’Pros rod holder. Link in the description :))
@@FlyFishDan The answer was hiding in plain sight. LOL. Thank you!
Dan! Love the video. We want to know about what rods, reels etc. you’re carrying!
Thanks
Thanks! On this day I had my Sage TCR 5 weight with Orvis Battenkill II reel and my Winston 3 weight with OG Orvis Battenkill.
For anyone interested. The AFTCO samurai jacket is the best thing ever. Your welcome 😊

Simms G4 Waders vs Primo Zip GD Wader, whats your take on theses two great waders ?

Perfect stuff ;-))) I just realise you wear a pistol? Bears? ;-)))
Bears...mountain lions...tweakers ;))
To stay warm eat and hydrate - bring a thermos with hot tea.
It looks like you’re packing heat😉
I was packing heat...it was more for the fishery I was at prior...but didn't want to leave it in my car.

I'll have to check that out!
What brand of net do you have.
I have a Hellbender bamboo net - family owned and custom made. Worth a look for sure.
