I remember listening to this time and time again thinking to myself “man I really need to quit drinking it’s been messing up my life in so many ways.” I’m so proud of myself for gathering over 90 days of sobriety. God willing there will be many more months and many years of sobriety ahead thanks Dr. P for the extra nudge and all the encouragement!

As a business consultant, and coach, one of the very first things I work with my clients on is getting crystal clear as to what it is they they want. Focus is one thing but there’s no chance in hell for you if you don’t have clarity in what it is that you want first - otherwise every single goal you set will be meaningless and you’re going to fail almost every time. The second main point JP notes at the end is the critical nature of the value of time and we underestimate and undervalue this pathetically! When business owners complain they don’t have enough time - their real issue isn’t the numbers in the day (we are all given the same!) - the issue is in their inability to leverage their time well.

I wish I had this class when I was a student back in 1987 in Japan. I never had a clear goal for life. As a result I don't feel satisfied with my career. I never took major risks. I think we should have this kind of class in all universities. On the other hand I think envisioning a goal that justifies all the effort required could be really hard, unless you have some very strong source of motivation.

But I think there is a right time, for EVERYTHING. I have been sad for a long time, but I'm trying to be better, and not feel sorry for myself, although I do. I feel stuck, and I feel that the World has betrayed me, by discriminating against me for not getting vaccinated. I have isolated myself too much, and I feel that people have forgotten about me. It's not completely true, but I feel that way. They accepted the vaccine, and the discrimination that went with it. I must forgive everyone for not fighting back two years ago. Purpose, meaning, service, calling, passion important for a meaningful life. I'm 70 years old now and one thing I learned you can plan, you can try to control every aspect of your life, you may think you are the captain the master of your sout. Time and chance play a part in all things, moreover we don't know when our time is up. As fish are caught in cruel nets or Birds are taken in snares so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.

Problem I'm having is that I have really reinforced the idea that there is no life that I would really want. Cut to me following Mr. Petersons advice about responsibility and all that and watching practices implemented nourishing my soul and washing away jadedness. So is my inability to plan for different reasons not important and the practice of planning is valuable in and of itself because you can course correct? Would love to hear your thoughts if someone has thought these issues through.

    • @mrknarf4438
      @mrknarf4438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He talks about it in another lecture: of course it's ok to self-correct!
It's not only unlikely, it's impossible to know exactly what your goal is before you've started: find something that looks like a goal you want in life, start working towards it, then if you find out it wasn't what you really wanted change, but keep moving! If nothing else you'll find out what you don't want and why, a great way to know thyself! Just don't stand still!
A good way to find something you value is pondering about people that you admire or that inspire you: what do they have in common? Which traits makes you value them? Why? Who are you jealous of and why?
That can be a great starting point.
      Good luck in your journey!

You should assess your life. I found Peterson's self authoring helpful personally, but there's plenty of other tools too. I like to do a life wheel, or the proust questionnaire every once in a while. Even journaling 30 mins a day, stream of consciousness could help.
Anything that helps you with insight & dialogue with yourself
      Lmk if this helps

Like, the stuff he was saying about letting your personality inform your goals. One of your life goals could be "have amazing friends". (it's one of mine, I lean agreeable). That's not very conventional, but it just makes sense, plus it makes me enjoy my life way more & actually helps with a ton of other things. I've put a lot of time & attention & care into my friends -- upkeeping old ones, making new ones, disagreements, disappointment, negotiating boundaries, learning.
So your goal can be smth like that, it fills your soul, even if you think "this shouldn't be a goal bc (blablabla)", smth that's hard to argue with.

you made those decisions and you might be behind many, the only way you make up that time begins with starting.

@@Mich-jk2ze Work is in progress, but back in my teens I had plenty of TIME, to do those things.. NOW I have a fulltime job doing bs stuff for others, for a good enough salary, but when you get home, you have the wife, Dog / kids, cooking, cleaning, and eating.. then your mind is barely able to put words together in a cohesive sentence anymore, and you end up doing some entertainment for an hour, then go to bed, and repeat. Weekends are too short and few, holidays usually planned out by wife / dog / kids etc..
Its not the will, its the energy level, and Time ..
Also there were several financial trains i missed, that are too late now, example BitCoin was dirt cheap back then, tesla stock was dirt cheap, vestas stock dirt cheap, etc, and I had involvement in all of it, or had opportunities and chose not to do it, because playing games was more interesting..

KFC founder Colonel Sanders didn’t start KFC until he was 65. It’s never too late. Read Atomic Habits and start with building a different identity compared to “someone like me”. James Clear said: “Your behaviors are usually a reflection of your identity. What you do is an indication of the type of person you believe that you are-either consciously or nonconsciously.* Research has shown that once a person believes in a particular aspect of their identity, they are more likely to act in alignment with that belief.” Read the book and it will teach you how to start. Message me and I can help (free). Good luck!

I think it's safe to say the people in this comments section believe in you, right as you are now. You might like to make all sorts of rationale (excuses) for why you're the most special case & so the rules that apply to everyone don't apply to you. But if you look at it like this, stripped of narrative, objectively, doesn't that ring false to you? Doesn't that sound like ego talking?
I would dare to say you can work on your life. Wherever you are today. And you have no idea what sorts of miracles may open to you, if & when you open to life like this. Nature rewards courage. I believe in you 🙏 God bless you

Working memory is innate & unchangeable (mostly) too, and it plays a big role in being able to pay attention to what information is important (eg, determining a goal from an ill-defined primordial sludge).
