Good morning Richard 👋 !! Thanks for the good mention and the link to my channel in the description 😊👍 !! I’m glad my question got this video off and running 👍 ! Other videos related to special, or quirky street names would be interesting!! I had spent quite a bit of time in and around Irving, Texas, but never knew the origin of the name ! I’m pleased that there turned out to be such a good story behind it, and that you could be relied on to do the research 📚 ✅ !! Interesting to hear your reasoning regarding length and content of your videos. I also enjoyed the cool street art towards the end of this walk 🖼️🚶♂️🏙️! I am on a bit of a ‘go-slow’ with my own videos, but plan to pick up the pace soon 👀 !! Thanks again for your kind words; see you about 👀 !! Cheers, Don 🙋♂️ !!
Hey Don, it's all good my friend, I'm glad that you were able to provide me with some inspiration to tell a story. As someone who puts a lot of effort into TH-cam I also view it as I do when I am a consumer. For example, my favorite TH-camr (Bald and Bankrupt @baldandbankrupt) has 5 new videos in the past month from South America, but they are sat in my 'Watch later' list because all of them are nearly an hour long and I don't have the time to watch them. It really is about quality rather than quantity. For example, I chopped two minutes out of this video as I feel that more people are likely to click a 9 minute video than they are an 11 minute video. In fact it is funny, at the start of this video I was actually talking live, so I had to cut that audio part out of the video and import the audio from the end of the video to replace the beginning section for the first minute 🤫😁😂 I'm also on a go slow, this was my first actual video for a month.
Hello, dearest Richard! Here I am...I couldn't watch your video earlier because after the trip to London I was a bit busy and then there was the loss of a very young loved one which really affected me. Unfortunately life is also this. My trip to beautiful London was truly unforgettable. A unique city, indeed. Exciting and vibrant. Dear Richard, I find the idea of telling where a street name comes from very interesting. Certainly NYC always has a unique story to tell! My biggest hug and like to you! Renata
Renata, firstly I am so sorry to hear of your sad news, I will keep you in my thoughts. I look forward to seeing your videos from London, I am sure that they are wonderful. I'm taking it a little easy right now while work is busy. There is no point going crazy when I am only getting a couple of hundred views per video, lol. I will resume filming soon.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Dearest Richard, thank you very much for your closeness. It was really painful, also because of the way it happened. They talked about it on TV and in the newspapers. And losing a 39-year-old young woman with a little girl is devastating... But sadly that's part of life too. My friend, I totally agree with you! In this period I am also quite busy with various things and I have little time left for YT and honestly I am a little disappointed by the monetization which, in my case, is nothing! My channel has been monetized for a year and I have no hits. But I continue because I like it and it amuses me, but I certainly can't dedicate myself totally to it! I'll never understand how so many post a video every day! They are great! Maybe they don't need that much editing, otherwise I don't know how they find the time! And then the time is to follow the other channels! It becomes a real job. Thanks again, dear Richard. Spend a peaceful weekend in wonderful NYC. My husband and I are having some serious thinking about next year. We will see! Hugs and cheers from Milan! Renata
You gave me a good laugh around 1:35 showing the street signs and mentioning the poor postman trying to deal with that. As a retired postal carrier of 38 years I can totally relate to this! I remember one time I was subbing on a route I'd never delivered before which included a neighborhood called Somerset Hill and there were FIVE streets called Somerset Way, Somerset Drive, Somerset Lane, Somerset Parkway and Somerset Avenue. To make matters worse the entire neighborhood and all the streets were not laid out in a straight grid but wound around in circles and intersected each other! One of my worst days on the job ever! Another great video full of your usual impeccable research and also appreciated your explanation of video lengths and content. I agree with you and have noticed much the same with ours.
I can't even begin to tell you how many times mail has been dropped off at my house for other addresses, lol. The funniest is whenever a new carrier is on the job. Our house is the last numbered one on the street, all even numbers, and they have a handful of mail for an odd numbered house that isn't even in the same ballpark as ours. It never occurs to them that the singular mansion looking building opposite is actually a set of apartments. Their mail is frequently dropped at our house. I'm pretty adamant about keeping them under 12 minutes and chopping off segments. I once read that if you have a ten minute video and 2 minutes of it is filler, then cut it out. If you wouldn't watch it yourself why would you think other people would watch it?
Richard, the house on the corner, above the grocery store with the red awning, across the street from PS 86 - -was the home where I was born and raised, from 1950-1980. The original grocer and his wife, the Meyers, were great family friends.
George, it took me a while to get this one posted but I am glad that you stayed around to see it. It is always fun to go back to where you grew up, isn't it? Unfortunately hardly anyone ever films in my hometown.
Hi Richard, we’re all of those bikes at the beginning all for rent? And they looked like E-bikes also…..it would have been a crazy job to be a mailman or for that matter a fireman and find an address when there were so many Streets, avenues, boulevards that were the same number……great story about Washington Irving……enjoyed the video, and I always watch, no matter how long or short the video is😃
Yes, the Citibike program has now extended to Brooklyn and Queens, despite the over the top protests from car drivers complaining about parking spots. Little do they know that this is just the start, NYC will eventually become a bike city. The watch time on this video after 50 views is 3 minutes 57 seconds per view, which I guess is about 43% retention. That number will drop but it will probably end up between a 35-39% retention rate. That is acceptable to me, but unfortunately the average views are down for the video right now, only a 3.1% click through rate which is really poor ;) I pay attention to all the rules, title less than 50 characters, detailed descriptions, home made thumbnail, videos between 8-12 minutes long, CEO tags, the whole shebang. Nothing actually works though 😂🤣
Being a history buff, I do love your videos, Richard ! I was pretty sure you were going to say Irving Ave was named after acclaimed early American author Washington Irving & I was right. Thanks for sharing ! Here in Fresno, in Calif's Central Valley, we have many streets in the oldest part of town that were originally named after people, etc but at some point around the turn of the century many of them were renamed with letters of the alphabet.
Jubal, it is quite funny that Fresno has a similar tale to Queens, with all streets being renamed to numbered streets. However, because I know a lot of the old street names I could still tell a little story on each. In fact as I am taking a little break from filming for a couple of months, perhaps I can rehash some older footage and add narration to it. Knickerbocker Ave that is mentioned in this video would be a perfect choice, mainly because that was the home of the Bonnano crime family. The street had a notorious Sicilian gang on it called the "Zips". Actual Sicilians brought over personally by Carmine Galante to run the Heroin trade in the area.
Unlike street names in Korea, it is really interesting to name a street after a famous artist or writer. Are there many street names named after famous women? It's always fun to look at the street murals in your videos. 8:37 The mural in that building seems to have painted the main characters in a movie or novel.
That is a very interesting question. To be honest with you there probably aren't that many streets named for women, mostly because before 1919 women were almost viewed as second class citizens. They didn't even have the right to vote until 1920. In more recent times you are likely to find women in street names around America (for example Rosa Parks Way in Portland, Oregon) but from the old days I don't think that there are very many. The mural at the end of the video I do not know who they are. The area is almost exclusively made up of immigrants from South America/Puerto Rico so the characters in the mural are likely famous among those communities.
This is happening all the time- 😧my message has completely disappeared! I’m sure I saw it on yr site. I did say the Open Minded Wonderer recently put up some videos on the Swindon area- Wroughton being the last one. She is based in Devizes & mostly covers Wiltshire but it is historical. Think you might like it. I shall take a ‘butchers’ at Don’s site haha. Hope you are well and that the weather isn’t too hot or too cold😀 Fraid forgot what else I said😟
Hi Diana, unfortunately I saw no message from you nor did I get a notification that you had posted one. I checked out Open Minded Warrior and left a comment on their Coate Water video. I would probably enjoy their videos more if they actually narrated them as opposed to writing on them :) I'm sure that they have some great stories to tell. The weather here right now is stupid hot for April, like in the high 80s, and humid as all get out as well, lol. However it will drop to a normal spring 60s this week so I hope to get out and do some more filming.
Hello thanks for letting me know that TH-cam is misbehaving as I suspected 🙁 I just don’t remember to check all my messages. This is happening a lot & other people say it happens to them too! Yes I know what you mean re lack of commentary but I find I have gotten used to her delivery. It is such an interesting subject! She premieres on Sundays. So sorry it’s so hot in N.Y. Do hope the temps come down as predicted. It is perfect April weather- warmish but nippy in the evening. Take care when you are out & about🙂
Ain't that the truth brother, though it still isn't as bad as a cable bill, lol. Fees for literally everything, and then you are taxed for the fees as well 😂
@@richardarthur-nycstories I agree , my cable bill is outrageous , when I first moved to Florida in 2002. it was $49.00 , and now it's over 200 00 dollars each month , and every few months there's like a 35 cent increase 🤷🏻♂️ < for What ,,,, 6 months from there another 55 cents , it's one of the biggest legal ripoffs going . I get it that in 20 years my bill would be higher but not triple
