Jane, I appreciate viewing this more than once. I have done most of these things, yet found myself thinking in terms of it just being an exercise in finding different textural backgrounds. Now when I look at many of my “unused” 12x12 pieces I now can view them as; just too pretty to cut up, just to unique to add anything on top of them, or just impossible to reproduce. They have been set aside as “valuable”; but since they were not a traditional “piece of art”(a landscape, a focal image, or a relatable image) they have not been framed or finalized. NOW, I view them as my best pieces of art that need to be seen in their totality, and enjoyed by doing that last step to put them on my wall. So, I want to thank you; from the bottom of my heart, from my inner artist. Through you sharing your work, and breaking down your process into “techniques”. I now KNOW, and totally can acknowledge, that I am an ARTIST. As that Artist has evolved, since discovering alcohol inks three years ago, I have completed my best pieces. It is that very pile of a handful of art pieces; those pieces that I can not do anything else with, that are my prized pieces of art. I do not want to put them behind a piece of glass, but I do want to finish them as you do on a birch panel with resin. Somehow, I need to find the means, and the determination to complete this final step. In the meantime, I want you to know the impact you (and you gorgeous artwork) have had in my life. Lovely patterns. For people who don't use Yupo and Al's but want to use these types of ideas with acrylic Inks or watercolour paint can use a heavier watercolour paper (over 180gsm) and use a Gel Medium to adhere to a wood board or panel no problem. Then seal with a waterbased varnish and can then resin coat if that glassy look is required.

I love your way off showing us how to work with those alcohol inks. I use this synthetic paper all the time and if I do not like it just wash the paper with water and start with a clean slate. I do the same with the tiles except I clean the tile with alcohol.

Might be helpful to tell people ... Yupo paper is called "paper" because of its format; it's actually a plastic product. That accounts for some of the advantages you point out. Great product ... unfortunately quite pricey. :) I'm a new subscriber; love your videos. Great work and teaching technique. Thanks.

Debra Ryan Hi Debra, thanks for watching. I use clean up over alcohol because i don’t like the smell of the alcohol. I find it too strong and need to be in a well ventilated area.
A link for the birch frame woulda been nice. TFS the ideas & techniques. Someone else said regular posterboard sheets (like you can get at dollar stores) work well with alcohol inks if you use the shiny side. And much less expensive compared to Yupo -- ever tried??

Other than tile is there any other paper besides yupo. It is way too expensive for my budget and would love to do something with alcohol inks other than tiles. Thank you for your instructions and sharing of your art

What is the difference between the claro extender and cleaning solution? Have you tried using the claro extender instead of the cleaning solution?
Do you need to seal the paper with something before you resin?

Just testing the few colors I made I found that you can use the shiny side of white posters from Dollar Tree. I can hardly wait for my Yupo Paper
Jane, I was wondering about the strips of artwork in the last few seconds of the video. Is it all one piece or did you actually put strips together to make the piece larger. If so, how did you do that?

Hiya! You mentioned using disposable brushes because you can’t get AI out completely during cleanup! Doesn’t this get expensive?! Can you dedicate brushes to colors? How do you clean brushes anyway? Also, what brushes do you recommended for washes and rounds etc.? BTW you are a fantastic teacher! Thanks for the tutorials! I’m learning so much as a newbie! 😍
Lesley Kuhn dollar store. I don’t always use expensive brushes but if I do then I use clean up solution and speedball pink soap.

As a newbie to AI I'm a little confused by all the different products. Are the clean up solution and colour extender the same as the 91% rubbing alcohol that a lot of others seem to use? Your TH-cam presentations are very good and I enjoy watching them. The patterns that the inks make are so beautiful.

If you put ink into a small pot with a lid, it lasts for days. Great for painting. I wouldn't put it in the bottle cap, messy. And hard for cap to stay clean.

Susan Leverentz Hi Susan, good question. If I'm using smaller brushes then just an egg cup with some clean up solution in it works well. I wash with dish soap and water too right after. But with larger brushes I tend to buy very cheaply so if I can't get clean or don't want to bother then I scrap them. But I also use the same colours with each brush so I try and keep them separated that way too. So same brush for using say purples or reds and another for yellow etc.
Michaels sells a pack of 10 5x7 Yupo sold by Tim Holts/Ranger. It's packaged as A Tim Holts/Ranger brand but it's the real YUPO. Ranger does not manufacture Yupo. Its all manufactured by Legion Paper. So it doesn't matter what brand you buy cuz it all comes from the same factors. So look where all his crap is. Honestly, you'd do better just to buy off Amazon or Ebay unless you only want the 5x7's. It's $9.00 @ Michaels. Before coupon. So i paid $4.50. If you can't get it then get Vellum. It's dirt cheap & everyone has it. You can buy it by the pad in whatever size you want. You can also buy it buy the page for $.49- $.99 on the isle with all the loose specialty paper. Also on the isle with the specialty paper is a 10 pack of Vellum for $2.99 before coupon. It comes in white or transparent whichbis awesome. If you need a regular pad its by the fine art section on the isle they keep all the pads of painting paper. The results are almost identical if not completely identical. Don't forget to load up on 91% Alchohol. Happy Painting!
F.I.N.E Forever Is Not Enough Thanks for all of your info. Yes I buy all my yupo in large sheets or on the roll. I don’t like using straight alcohol all the time due to the smell. If you have sensitivity which a lot of people do then I advise using the Jacquard Clean Up Solution. 😊💕

Jane Monteith 👍 Yes, I couldn't agree more but for some reason everyone seems to have access to a Michaels. Lol. Go figure. They are reserved for emergencies. I have to order everything online. The nearest art store is a couple hundred miles away, in another state! I'm in the U.S. & Currys is only in Canada, I think. Yeah, we have a serious shortage of art stores here. I love Jaquard..they have the most beautiful pigments & they are dirt cheap, especially their ink! 😃 Back to bingin' on your vids.. Love your channel!!!!

Can you add the yupo painting on to a canvas painting?

Cheryl Relph you can. And I’ve tried but personally I think the outcome on yupo is far superior.
Cheryl Relph I would agree with Jane. The only substitute for Yupo would be Vellum...transparent is amazing. Now if you are wanting to actually paint a picture, like you would with water colors for example. Say like a landscape, trees, houses or ocean..blah blah blah..traditional painting then yeah, painting on a gessoed canvas would work ok for that. You're just not going to get the organic abstract effects that you are used to seeing people do on TH-cam. Happy Painting!

Many people have recommended photo paper from Costco (use the back). Much less expensive. Have you tried it? Also, do you have a link on where to purchase the wood panels you use to mount your art on?
Vonalda Utterback I buy panels locally not online. Yes lots of people use Costco paper. But I do large work so need to buy Yupo by the roll.
Clean up solution?? Is that just alcohol???? I've only found out about Alcohol painting a couple days ago and IT is fascinating
angel Irene Crim Hi there. Thanks for watching 😊 As for the types of surfaces you can use alcohol inks on they include any non porous surface. Yupo is actually composed of plastic that’s why it works so well. Clean Up Solution by Jacquard is similar to pure alcohol except there is no smell. It’s pricer but if you’re sensitive to chemicals then this is a better alternative.
You can use 91% Alchohol for best results. To make your own solution just add a bit of glycerin. You can find it in the pharmacy section. A bottle of each will go a very very long time consudering an average bottle of Alchohol is 16 ounces. The large bottles of the blending solution are 4 ounces, I believe. Thats significant savings for the same results. Happy Painting ladies!

Fiona Reddoch no. It's used for cleaning up ink, small brushes etc but I use on my art with the ink itself along with the extender solution to give the ink different results

Can I use blending solution or alcohol instead?
Katherine Schmitt blending solution will do a couple of things. It makes the ink more translucent and soft looking and allows you more working time. Alcohol or clean up solution will dry more quickly and take away the sheen.
