When he started going the other way, it immediately threw my mind back 35+ years think "oh yeah, that hidden money bag trick!!" I remember doing this also, but what I can't recall is HOW I found out about this?! No internet, cheat codes to look up. All I can think of is a classmate told me about this trick (easter egg, the $5k money bag) or I saw it in a magazine. Back then there were a few that showed tips and tricks of these games.
What a blast from the past. You did what I did at 0:45, went the other way to grab that bonus money bags (3:36). I'm thinking here, how did I know this trick back then? No internet, no cheats/codes. I THINK there were magazines back then that told us how to get it, maybe word of mouth from classmates. I can't recall..lol! 20,000 score on my old Atari 2600. Back then for most of these Activation games, you would take a picture, a Polaroid of your TV - proof of the score. Mail that in and wait 4-6 weeks...maybe longer. Activision would send you back a cool patch!
It wasn't endless. The objective was to clear all 255 screens in less than 20 minutes. Now, it's impossible to finish in that time staying above ground. Here's the trick: When you travel in the tunnel, one screen in the tunnel equals three screens aboveground. The key is to find the right pattern for above/below travel to complete the jungle. For an added bonus, try to collect all the treasures too :).
This game looks like fun. The game is so simple but very addictive. The SNES and Genesis systems were my favorites. The 80's and 90's were the golden years of gaming. Some kids just do not understand the importance of those decades in gaming.
+Zonnie wow thanks for being nice about it?? secondly, this WAS the first /major/ home system for video games, though there were some mild sucesses. if you think someone is ignorant, educate them, but respectfully so.
+Savannah Burris You never specified that it was the first successful console, that gives me the right to call you an ignorant, you have to be more clear. Dumbass.
+Zonnie well I wrote that over a year ago I now know more about games because I developed an interest in the subject. Take the stick out of your ass and let people enjoy things? I mean 1) don't be mean just because you're hiding behind a screen 2) these are games. they're not real. they're concepts and don't physically exist beyond a screen. chill out. 3) I'm going to ignore the random hate. Have a nice day and don't be bitter to random strangers, K?
When I was 9 I wanted a game console so much. My best friend had a NES and it was just amazing. My mom said if we can find a game console at a garage sale that I can get it. Well the second garage sale we went to had an Atari 2600 with 30 games for $25.00, and my mom asked if I wanted it, so of course being a kid wanting one really bad I said yes. I loved my Atari and it had Pitfall as one of the games. Of course I sucked at it, but getting an Aari was cool. It wasn't NES but it was fun.
Wow this brings it back! A time when my life was so simple. I had an Atari for years then upgraded to a NES. Never got the point of this game, it just went on and on and on and on and on and on, no big bosses or anything.
Really impressive game on the small Atari 2600 console, considering how little resources one has available. David Crane must be a really awesome programmer when he did this game. I'm sure he picked up some tricks at Atari and later at Activision too, but still VERY few other programmers managed to make similar games. It got incredible 255 screens, score, timer, good audio, great graphics and animations. I'm lost for words. It would have been fun to see the source code some day... Great upload!
Well it doesn't look that exciting on TH-cam, but I bet when your playing it on your own it's really exciting. Pitfall was a great Action Platformer that was ahead of it's time for sure.
One trick about this game is the player must leap at the end of every screen prior to entering the next screen in case a log is waiting on the other side
A long while ago I bought Activision Anthology for the Game Boy Advance with this and many other classic games on it. I wish Nintendo would do that for their simple but classic games that were out for the NES.
Great Atari 2600 graphics... Compared to other games released about the same time - same system. Or do you think I was comparing the graphics with the Xbox360 version? lolnot?
@Thunderwing88 There are NES games out on the GB advance. Games like Donkey Kong,Metroid,Super Mario, and a few others. Just check Amazon website the games are there and can be had for a good price.
does anybody remember a computer game from 1988-89, where a running man must run from these bowling ball-looking monsters, and he can gain some time by leaving behind Christian crosses in the path, which slow down the monsters just a little?
lol. I'm not sure if you were being serious, but just in case anyone is genuinely interested... Google for "Racing the Beam: How Atari 2600′s Crazy Hardware Changed Game Design". All the drawing had to be done in software, so the code literally had to draw each line of graphics in realtime as the electron beam scanned across the screen. The fact they managed to make any detail at all is quite impressive. :)
>_< I was being serious. I've been reading up on the specs of the 2600 lately and realized that these graphics aren't possible according to the original design. I guess you could change the background level graphics channel in between each horizontal trace if you were somehow able to time it just right. I would think that might flicker or be very flow. Now I'm curious how the emulator achieves the emulation of this effect. All seemingly silly questions in the name of art I guess.
Yeah, a lot of the oldschool developers still survive today. Even EA has been around for a long time -- that's just the problem. The longer they stay around, the more new people shuffle in and replace originals, the more corporate acquisitions can be made, and eventually you are left with a money-grabbing husk
Back in the 1980's most of the games I played were for 5 minutes and then I got bored. It's was a small few that kept my attention. People look back with rose tinted glasses I think.
@RJHTommy no the levals are not random at all and all treasure items are only ocated on specific screens,. the maker of this vid did not do the best walk though becasue the maker did not get the proper ending and instead died. beilve it or not if your able to locate all tresure items and get them the game ends anyways with out your death.
I can't believe I just watched this for ten minutes... and LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Me to LoL
I grew up on this!!!
I can´t believe this game was so exciting and amusing for me when I was a kid...
Good times that don't come back...Good memories...Thank You!
It never occurred to me when I played this 20+ years ago that I could also go left! Lol
Arman Foroughi I didn't know I could go right for years myself

These used to be epic graphics........

No they weren't. there were way better looking and sounding arcade games.
These still are epic graphics.
Wow, this video made me go back to the 80's, i was 10 years old then, thanks!!
I just got through playing this I love it!!! Still have my original from when I was growing up!!!
I remember beating this game. No small feat, either-this was easily a decade before you could save your progress!
I got an Atari for my 14th birthday. So cool to be playing the first ever gaming system. This game is really fun, so is Phoenix. ^_^
+Zonnie wow thanks for being nice about it??

the first class of platform games, with single screen movement, this game was one of the first platforms games, but not the first.
This is way better than Skyrim
XiiCubed I know I always fart when I get hit by a log.
Jake Wade please tell me you're joking.
Always makes me laugh
XiiCubed How can you compare the two? One is a platformer the other is a an Open World RPG

I remember playing this game at the age of four on my uncle's Atari...
Great Atari 2600 graphics... Compared to other games released about the same time - same system. Or do you think I was comparing the graphics with the Xbox360 version? lolnot?
Now this person knows how to play pitfall!!

Wow...I can't remember this game being so bloody boring lol. Good vid though.
Back in the 1980's most of the games I played were for 5 minutes and then I got bored. It's was a small few that kept my attention. People look back with rose tinted glasses I think.
...and yet I seemed to play this for hours. lol!
That intense
that intense indeed yeh
This kinda reminds me of the original Donkey Kong
..and just like that I am 12 years old again.
