AYANEO Flip DS: The Ultimate 3DS & Wii U

  • The AYANEO Flip DS is one of the more interesting handheld PCs to release in years, thanks to its unique dual screen setup and huge amount of customization. Not only can it play DS, 3DS, and Wii U games with impressive accuracy, but the second screen has a number of different use cases. In this video we'll go over a bunch of scenarios where this rather expensive handheld might be a good fit for you.

** Correction: an active stylus wouldn't work on the bottom screen, but a capacitive touch stylus will (and they are very cheap).

Yes, that price point is just too high. I just bought 2 New Nintendo 3DS, both under $200 each. And I'm picking up Switch Lites for $60 to $100. While I'd love to have this Flip DS, it just doesn't make financial sense. I'm way better off with a real laptop and carrying a Switch and/or 3DS.

There is unfortunately no inspiration. You saw it on the DS and especially the WiiU. It has use cases but the developers have to do lots of extra work to utilize it. So most end up just mirroring, or using it for a map, or some separate mini games.
One example of it being used right is in ZombiU (Zombi for WiiU) - the second screen was inventory. When accessing inventory, the main screen switches to a third person view of you accessing your backpack. Meanwhile, you're literally accessing your backpack on the WiiU gamepad screen, while glancing up at the main screen periodically to check for zombies. It was exciting and completely missing from the ported version.

In some cases, maybe you're not as immersed in either, but different immersion level is not bored. In other cases, you could be using the show to shut out external distraction to better focus on the game. Time is finite, why choose one, when you can do both?

The market for this kind of handheld is also getting good with a ton of gamers now being adults who grew up playing DS and 3DS and are very nostalgic about their games rather than people like myself who grew up playing the OG Gameboy and the Gameboy Advance.

When it comes to Citra and getting both screens to be "fullscreen" on separate monitors it goes as follows:
Open and choose a game. After it's launched toggle the separate screens and move the second screen to the second monitor.
Close Citra completely. Open it back up and when you choose a game, the screens should start out in separate windows. Move the second window to the second monitor and use the fullscreen hotkey to go fullscreen.
Put the main screen's window back in focus by clicking it, use the hotkey for fullscreen. Now both are in full screen.
However, not sure how well this will translate to Flip DS, but it should work the same as it's still happening in Windows.

You are getting a FULL BLOWN windows PC with dual screens (one at 120hz) and good specs in a portable form factor smaller than most laptops for under $1000 (unless you go with the highest spec model). Most laptops and tablets with similar specs and features cost about the same and in some cases over $1000 and they only have 1 screen. The only real downside is the battery life but that is usually the case when a new device comes out, especially one like this. I'm not saying it's cheap, however the price is more than fair for what it offers especially when compared to the competition.

I'd put money on Nintendo combining their two most successful platforms, the DS & NS in their next console, aka the Switch DS or Switch Duo, it's also another way to make Nintendo's hardware unique and indispensable, which share holders love, as it cuts down on emulation and piracy for a good chunk f the devices life span, the Switch was indispensable for many years just because it was portable, until the Steam Deck came along, a Switch DS would be even more so, not to mention DS gaming consoles are really nice, and this video really show cases how much untapped potential there still is for a modern DS portable console, it would also mean legit DS and 3DS Virtual Consoles would be possible.
Or imagine co-op games and being able to see your friend's screen, or just streaming other players screens to the second screen while you play, in an FPS shooter where teamplay is important it would allow you to properly direct each other if you can see what each other is doing, or imagine Mario Kart online multiplayer and having your friends camera feed up so you can talk and interact with each other, so there is even use cases for multiplayer.
I also love the idea of a gun scope or light gun games being playable via the second screen via touch.

Make it last longer too . One hour battery life is unacceptable... .

I probably won't think about getting this one until it drops in price, but damn... I really, *really* hope dual-screen devices like this continue to get made and improved upon.

Though this does look a bit rough and prototype-y, I'm really glad to see someone trying this concept. I hope it does well enough for them to be able to comfortably iterate and release a second generation. I think that would be very neat to see.
Unfortunately, I personally don't feel particularly compelled to have a full Windows PC in my hands, so I'd have to concede that I'm not really the target audience.

i am so happy with my retroid flip that the more i see this review the more i think that the version with no second screen had more value if it only costs less than this one
