There’s something you touched on for a split second here that I feel could lay at the bottom of all of this. When you have staff that are without contract, are freelance, then you lose the ethics of making these types of shows. A scene could cause media backlash against someone, or conflate a societal issue that plays right into the hands of big corporations and their power. There is no accountability on the effects of someone’s life from press intrusion , nor accountability for what this does in shaping culture. Where can the ethics be? I realise I’m digressing from the point that these people have no rights in their current / past employment, but for me this has opened up a window on responsibility. We should be demanding so much more from the media industry.
1. The majority of unscripted TV producers refuse to show their faces out of shame for their unethical manipulative tactics, it has nothing to do with NDA’s they knowingly signed, it’s not a gag order! 2. According to them: they’re miserable, uncredited, undervalued, overworked and severely underpaid yet still refusing to change their jobs [Why?] ‘cause the networks will hire other people… poor things ;( 3. I have three recommendations for y’all: • *Conduct* a reality check. • *Believe* in yourselves and your creative talents. • *Listen* to Freelanceology podcast. 4. Kudos to each and every one of you for coming forward to share your personal experiences with us. Your feelings are valid, and I hear what you’re saying, but feelings are not facts. 5. I was the owner of a Craft Service in L.A. called Healthy Hollywood. I worked a couple of big reality shows. Since the craft service area is the "breakroom" of the entertainment industry, I got to overhear a lot of conversations about work. Everything about this presentation is true. All the PAs were overworked and stressed out. Non of them would ever complain to management. They seemed like mice running endlessly on a production wheel producing meaningless/heartless content. And boy, do I have stories to tell about sexual conduct, racism, and union busting. A great example of NDA power is talked about by Noel Casler who worked with Mark Burnett and the Apprentice. Everyone is afraid to come forward and talk about the Sh#tShow that Donald Trump created for all on that production. If the public knew how bad it was working with him, they might never have voted for him. But they all had to stay quite to keep the fake storyline alive...that he is a smart businessman who is not a womanizing, racist, creepy old has-been, who soils himself because his Adderall/speed addiction. He can't even read his simple que cardsmand would throw tantrums because some of the words were too long. Those NDAs and the threat from Mark Burdett Productions helped get a terrible man elected. All workere need to recieve residual checks, just like the " stars" for any ans all reruns . Down to the clean up crew ... yup and especially thw writers

100%. May as well admit "I'm the demographic reason why TV sucks now."
Can you confirm reality TV is just improv with strict direction ? And they are all trained actors that do other jobs till they make it big ?
"Reality" TV has been unwatchable for 10 years.
'Reality' TV is such trash anyway. Why do people keep watching it? 😒
Because it's cheap to make. Easy to get 5-10-15 seasons. Get $$$. 📂
@@DavidLLambertmobile That explains why this trash TV is _made_. I'm asking why people keep watching it.
You guys do such good work?I think you should take this story to independent news outlets like Roland Martin Unfiltered to get the word out even farther.
ditto
Excellent Effort! All SAG AFTRA members including Crew need ownership portfolios.
2. According to them: they’re miserable, uncredited, undervalued, overworked and severely underpaid yet still refusing to change their jobs [Why?] ‘cause the networks will hire other people… poor things ;(
3. I have three recommendations for y’all:
• *Conduct* a reality check.
• *Believe* in yourselves and your creative talents.
• *Listen* to Freelanceology podcast.
4. Kudos to each and every one of you for coming forward to share your personal experiences with us. Your feelings are valid, and I hear what you’re saying, but feelings are not facts.
5. Finally, this is TH-cam not TV.
"As a lover of reality TV"... no thank you.
Stop watching it, simple.
These stories remind me of what happened with Hannah Gutierrez being forced into too many roles on set.
Really the stupidest shows on TV
That's called, being poor in America! Welcome to the club!
what about a list of movies / shows / whatever that are union approved?
it is hard to know who to support if we don't know how something was made.
I was in that industry, and now in I.T. believe me - they are the both the same environments. Contract, working short term for about the same salary 20 years ago. Just longer hours and no overtime.
I cancelled my cable tv when reality shows first started airing. Don't miss cable tv since then and have saved quite a bit of money at the same time.
These are people who never learned to say no, or that's not my job.
That stinks. Stay strong. Try to produce your own shows. ❤ pool your resources if possible. Thank you for the video. ❤
It is hard for me to feel sympathy for these people who basically enable the rock bottom of what human culture has to offer.
Cancel the RICH we stopped watching tv and News 2 weeks ago and it’s been great.
The contestants get it worse. So i dont feel bad for producers who encourage contestants to work in terrible conditons.
I feel a little conflicted about this one; the story of the people being exploited working on a show format that's about exploiting people.
A union organizer was telling me that "managers" aren't necessarily ineligible based on just the title. Some can still join if their role isn't demonstrably a controlling position.
It’s incredibly frustrating that the editor they spoke to is in MPEG 700, when it's a minority of editorial that is unionized. Especially on the East Coast, where MPEG doesn't care about us.
These people should have whistleblower protections against malicious use of NDAs
In education, admin are "management" and they have a union. #WorkersUnite All workers should be guaranteed living wage, safe conditions, health insurance, & retirement benefits.
This is capitalism all the money for the few all the work for the many
Trash cans on every corner and they empty it weekly. Lowering the standard by taking the art out of entertainment one crap show at a time. if you are gonna be a bottom feeder, that is where people will find you
Didn't the reality TV trend happen because the writers guild went on strike and executives wanted to work around them in the first place?
Nope. Reality tv started w/a test drive of "Survivor" in Sweden- who then declined to produce another season after the first person "voted off the island" committed suicide.
As season 26 of Big Brother starts; as a fan, I really wonder how production on that show has been treated😢 so sad that ppl have no power in their workplace
eh, we should just stop letting reality tv exist
the fact producers/managers are exempt from unions in the US is wild to me.
6:30 oh man, I feel that for sure. Once scratched a nervous hole in my hand and gave myself a shingles outbreak in my early 30s 😅
This is a fantastic video.
He said with complete sarcasm.
@@harlequinheart3 nope. Genuinely meant it.
NDAs should only be about the storyline and not work conditions or suppressing celebrity conduct.
GO UNION and stand up to corrupt NDAs
Surely there isn't a better economic system... also voting with your dollar is bs
" voting with your dollar is bs" ... um, why do you think this?
@@Andre-qo5ekbecause it means whomever has more dollars, has more votes. It’s an ideal that maintains the status quo, and does not to combat power imbalances.
@@MWBonfiglio ok bonfiglio cook 🤔
These people now know what its like to be their landscaper.
More money, less time to make it.
This will only get worse if we keep doing the same things.
Why would anyone be so desperate as to sign an NDA in order to participate in an industry segment that everyone knows is viciously exploitive?
I don't understand why people say America is the best nation.
You and me both and I've been here for decades!! It's the best place for exploitive capitalists, that's for sure!!
Retailers have been taking advantage of young workers by the same tactics…. Give them a title, they are proud and their families are proud… while the companies exploit them…..
Reality TV is sadistic in the way people treat each other in the show. That's why I hate these shows. So it's not surprising that it's abusive to workers.
A correction here - The majority of editors in reality/unscripted are not union, and the editors at the organized shops on the east coast are not included in the wga union.
I'm currently on the toilet.
Nice to see that Adam Conover was at the rally they show clips of. He seems like a true ally, after all his reporting during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike.
Adam Conover is a HUGE CON ARTIST! I have worked in the industry for more than a decade and have seen A Lot of nasty things go down. Adam is one of the WORST! He is only an ally for publicity! He doesn't even support his own community unless he is getting a paycheck out of it. You can believe me or not, but it isn't that difficult to read many more stories of how he hasn't paid his crew, his home staff, how he has SAed MANY of the camera men (which is why his show went through so many), etc. He would threaten ppl with his sister-who is just as nasty and selfish. Adam is a pos!
These shows exist because they don't need union writers directors or actors, which get fair (ish) wages and some level of protection. They are cheap to make, and people watch. Unionize them and they will change or disappear.
Reality tv itself is problematic. How are we surprised that problematic premises are made into shows without problematic conditions
All workere need to recieve residual checks, just like the " stars" for any ans all reruns . Down to the clean up crew ... yup and especially thw writers
I have never watched a single reality show, it is garbage.
I have an epic story of being stalked and harassed in my personal life by members of the AICP in LA
I'm sorry but how can you watch reality TV and not see that it's exploitative?
Also you have to realize that the rise of the reality tv industrial complex started as a response to the writers strike of the early 90s so it behooves them to undermine established fair industry standards as that is how they were formed in the first place
Justice will arrive soon to battle injustice around the world 🌎🌍
As a Canadian, it still blows my mind that Americans are fully dependent on their jobs to provide quality health care... That should be a basic human right... Which I believe it is under the UN Charter... Just saying...
If NDAs were simply for preventing plot leaks, they would expire shortly after release
