      Don't get an olympic weightlifting bar tho, get a power bar. Weightlifting bars are expensive as hell, more flexible and the knurling on them is usually softer so they can slip from your back more easily while squatting, and they have very sensitive bearings (cause they need to rotate fast for cleans and snatches) but that also means they can't handle heavier loads that well and are a bit unstable and while they can handle getting slammed in the floor, you can damage them more easily if dropping them on racks. Powerbars on the other hand are stiffer, cheaper, most have a center knurl for squats and can handle being slammed on a rack

    The one thing he didn’t mention, and you can’t always do anything about this… But if you have the option when you’re purchasing your home; look for a place with tall ceilings. Having at least a 9 foot ceiling in the room you’re going to build your gym makes an enormous difference in being able to set up some thing like a pull up bar. At least if you’re tall like me.

    If you got 300 bucks and next to no room, gymnastic rings, a few rubber bands and a (heavy) weight vest is the way to go. You can do pretty much anything and everything for your upper body on gymnastic rings and you have to bring all of them stabilizing muscles into play as well. As you get more muscle and strength, just do more demanding exercises and/or use the weight vest for added weight. And you can use a rubber band to lighten up the ring exercises. If you can do the crucifix, are you gona tell me you ain't got a great upper body? All manner of dynamic plyometric jumps for the lower body. Next would be olympic bar and bumper plates, but they are expensive as hell and you need a whole lot of room to train with them... and a sturdy floor. Next is power rack and safety straps.

  • @FutureDevilDog
    @FutureDevilDog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Jump rope is my first type of equipment. Right next to a pull up bar. But it is one of the easiest things to fit into any busy schedule, easy to transport. As far as exercise (diet obviously being #1 factor) , this was definitely responsible for my 100lb weight loss. You are basically contracting all your muscles in each little bounce to stay in rhythm and balance. Then adding high knees, criss-crosses and double unders for a good 10 minutes. You are left completely soaked and breathing like a fish out of water.

      M Renovatio why is a power rack better than a half rack? I bought a half rack simply because it was cheaper and I dont have much of a large space at the moment, why if ever should I upgrade in the future to a full rack?

    • @mrenovatio3739
      @mrenovatio3739 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bigpapipapa256 You don't need to upgrade. It's only marginally better. Stability/sturdiness and an integrated pull-up bar are the benefits of a full rack (although many half racks have pull up bars now). I train mostly on a half rack these days because of home renovations.

    So many comments seem to miss a point; the list is based on what Jocko Willink finds useful based on his own experience. If it doesn't fit your budget, goals, space availability, living circumstance then it's not for you. I personally am unskilled and untrained in gymnastic movements as demonstrated, however the dumbed down version or suspension trainer works great for me. I love the concept 2 rower, I don't have the space for it however, rather than bumper plates and oly bars, over the years I've purchased 7 ft and 5 ft standard bars and standard plates. Point to be made; Personalise it to your own situation.

For cardio: running outdoors 3x a week, i got a heavybag 1-2x a week, boxing ball that attaches to head for reaction and shadow boxing 1-2x a week. For strength an olympic 2" barbell with 400lbs, i do incline bench and shoulder press 2x a week, a pullup bar 1x a week, barbell rows 1x a week, barbel squats, Romanian deadlifts and calf raises 1x a week, situps/ab wheel 2x a week, barbell wrist rollers, captain of crush gripper and extensor bands 2x a week. I also got resistance bands i can attach to the barbell for speed work or do isolation movements with (bicep curls, lateral raise, reverse flies etc)

    I started with click dumbbells, then a quality squat rack and more steel plates than I could ever lift (bought this all off of a power lifter). Came with a bench too.
    Next I added a rope and rings (cheap), a landmine unit, gymnastics mats, a seated calf raise machine, bought some bumper plates, and built two jumping boxes. There is nothing I can’t do now.
    I have a quad too that sometimes I push out back of my place as my wife steers and brakes.
    I’m 43 years old and have been working out hard and following proper nutrition for just over a year. I used to lift a while ago but it sure felt good to get back at it! I feel better than ever!
    Keep working hard guys and gals regardless of your age and make no excuses. Anyone can do it.

    Get a doorway pull-up bar; they're not "elite" but they're going to get the job done without breaking the bank.
    Go to Home Depot, buy some cam straps, two 7 inch cuts of 2 inch PVC pipe, two 3ft lengths of chains, and two carabiners to make blast straps.
    While you're at Home Depot pick up a 50lb bag of playground sand and some gorilla tape to sure up the bag so nothing leaks out of it.
    Total cost will be under $50 for everything and if you stick with it, you'll be able to get in better shape than most of the population.

    • @mrsnarks4291
      @mrsnarks4291 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Fuck all that. $50 is way too much to spend on a home gym.
      Step 1 - take sand from the playground and put it in used garbage bags and duct tape them into the shape of atlas stones. You can find bags placed at curbside on garbage day. You can just dump the trash out nearby where the bag was. If you want standards to place your new atlas stones on you can simply take a few garbage cans as well - try to find a few in different sizes. Unfortunately, you *will* have to pay for some duct tape if you don't have any. If you find yourself getting too strong for these bags, you can add weight to the bags with sections of chain. Lots of people just leave chains wrapped around their bicycles when they park them for some reason. You can just use those if you have a bolt cutter. Chains work better than the U shaped things that some people use, but they can also be used in a pinch.
      Step 2 - Go to construction sites and leave with anything heavy that's lying around. Slabs of concrete, sections of I beam, cement mixers, dump truck tires. The 3rd and 4th tires are sometimes a pain in the ass to get off of the dump trucks, but it's definitely worth the effort - tire flipping is the king of exercises. Pro tip - you might also be able to find some duct tape at these sites so you don't have to pay for the tape from step 1.
      Step 3 - use the railing on freeway overpasses to do pullups. Inside the overpass is acceptable, but outside is where the money is. Let's face it, you can't really, *really* get the most out of your butterfly pullups until you have complete 360 degree freedom. That overpass fence is just too much of a hindrance. Also, a well kept little know secret discovered by the Bulgarians in the 1970s is that car and truck exhaust is highly anabolic. Bill Phillips told me this, and I have never known Bill to be a source of shitty information.
      Total cost will be under $5 for everything.

      I took some cargo straps and took the handles of resistance bands my mother once bought for herself (she's a physical therapist) to make diy monkii bars. monkii bars have grips shaped like trx but utilise two anchor points like rings and are portable but expensive. I think I'm gonna get some pvc pipe to make my own and more portable handles. We have a big basement room (it once contained a large oil tank for the heating system which we replaced with a gas heating system upon moving in and ripped out the tank) with a concrete ceiling. We screwed a hook for my punching bag (got it used for 40 EUR) into the ceiling and my mom screwed two more hooks, shoulder width apart, for a kinda cringey purpose into the ceiling on which I hang my diy suspension training system. I really have trouble with supporting positions (L-sit, dips etc) on my system so maybe I'll make some paralettes out of pvc pipe. I don't trust myself with making portable dip bars out of pvc pipe though. Maybe I'll get some grappling mats for solo drills, I really like martial arts but I can train only once a week so... My brother has got a barbell for lifting and I can borrow it from him.

  • @sabrewolf479

    I almost completely agree with Jacko. Rings are definitely 1st. Squat rack is 2nd. Not sure if I'd recommend kettlebells over adjustable dumbbells though. Almost anything you can do with a kettlebell, you can do with a dumbbell and so much more, and the Concept 2 Rower is brutal. Forget torture and waterboarding, all you need is a Concept 2 Rower.

    These are no essentials. Essentials mean: What do you need if you are very very limited in space/money.
    Essentials: Bodyweight exercises --> If you have a wall where you can mount it (as you cannot do this with every wall!) pull up and dip bar (you can get this as one fits both solution) takes up very little space if you can just mount and demount the pullup bar from the wall and only have an attachement that is fixed.
    (my solution: www.pullup-dip.com/de/ as you can also just take it outside if you buy the double package)
    From here you can add maybe these gymnastic rings (or you just don't, but they are not too expensive and rather versatile together with the pullup bar).
    If you're not the gymnastic rings type just leave them for the moment.
    A jumping rope! Yes that is what you might wanna add before you think about a rowing machine or a stationary bike etc. You can always go for a jog, do burpees, high knees, jump around etc. without any equipment. Is a rowing machine nice? Yes. Is it essential? If you're still thinking "yes" then just stop reading here... (no of course it isn't!!!)
    Next are dumbbells (way before barbell!). Dumbbells are small and depending on what you wanna get cheapish. If your main problem is space and not money then I guess you can just go for powerblock, bowflex, ironmaster or whatever other system you prefer.
    If money is the matter then just get whatever small dumbbells you can.
    And if you get your dumbbells get a bench as well! One where you can do incline positions and stuff.
    What can we do with that? Everything we can with a barbell (to a certain degree). Even deadlifts, even though the main target muscles might be slightly different it will still train all of the same muscles. Most barbell and dumbbell exercises are interchangeable!
    You can press you can pull you can lift heavy and you have a bench you can use for more bodyweight exercises! (Jumping exercises, positioning your feet/legs on the bench, etc.)
    And now as nice to have we got the barbell! Yes an olympic grade barbell is awesome! And a rack for this barbell would be great as well!
    But again: Are these essential???!!! (please don't say yes! because of course they are NOT!)
    Nothing really is essential but your will to work out!
    But if you're starting to build a home gym it will depend on what your limitations are! Do you have a cellar/garage/big ass room where nobody will complain if you drop the weights and the floor won't break? Yeah go ahead and buy a barbell and a rack! Awesome! I'd do the same! I'd leave the dumbbells be and work out with a barbell preferably!
    Do you have very limited space but money to burn? Some adjustable dumbbells, a bench, pullup and dip bar and voila here you go. You can even leave the bench out if you really don't have the space.
    You have no money and no space? Guess you should go to your gym and maybe just buy a pullup/dip bar.

    Sometimes you can't have a hardcore pull-up bar attached to a wall because people don't know the strength of the wall or if it's their property
    Nothing wrong with door attachment pull-up bars
    If you got space and you're not buying a cage
    You could get a power Tower what got pull ups dips Roman chair press ups all-in-one
