By saying "Standard Chinese", he wasn't saying it wasn't great, he was literally saying it was "Standard Chinese" which is one of the many dialects of Mandarin Chinese in China, specifically the northern part, so he was kinda really saying his Chinese was good, and that it sounded like a certain dialect.
Standard as in used in "Professionals have standards" or "up to standard". For perspective, the first hanzi in 標準/标准 is like target and the second hanzi is like accuracy.

The only Chinese dialect that's actually standardized is Mandarin, & by saying that 'his Chinese is standard' simply means that Ryan's Mandarin sounds like how it should sound (Chinese is tonal & non-natives always end up butchering the tones somehow) in a textbook manner. While it does mean that he's good, it definitely doesn't mean 'it sounded like a certain dialect'.

A lot of girls are like that but it’s really tough to convince them to date you because you fall into a “nice guy / nice girl” conversation mode. At least I don’t know how to.
