Jó estét, Connor. I'm English and learning Hungarian. It's such a beautiful language. Not easy, because the vocab is so dissimilar to anything else, but worth the effort!
Lots of success with your Hungarian language learning!
All the best from a Hungarian from Austria.
@KatalinHalom Köszönöm!

2. Yes, that building is the Parliament, besides river Danube. Bratislava-Budapest-Vienna well, they are not so close... I think it is apoint of view.

That lake that you see at 5:50 is Lake Balaton also known as "Hungarian Sea". It's the biggest lake in Central Europe. I went there last September and the water was so amazing, if only for that short amount of time I was there. First time I put my feet in that water. I'm definitely going back this summer!
Yeah red paprika and sour cream both together and separately for everything :D By the way the sour cream in Hungary tastes way different (and different texture too) than in the US or even in West EU for example. Goulash soup, stuffed cabbage, stew (all version - pork, beef, deer you name it) and others are all full of red paprika powder in a spice form. And also don't forget the spicy red paprika which is like chilli and you put them on anything you want as an after seasoning like salting and such.
Thanks for watching videos about Hungary it makes me feel proud :)
In the West one should look for Polish/Russian speciality stores for a sour cream that is similar and can be used to cook Hungarian recipes.
Just a little correction here: the basis of Hungarian food is not just the paprika: it's the balance of saute'd onion, garlic, ground black pepper, different vegetables and the paprika,(sweet/ hot depending on the personal taste) sour cream is optional. most of the stew +goulash , fisherman's soup are made this way I'm an old Hungarian bloke by the way,
jó étvágyat!
14:40 Well, Wolter was wrong here. "Thank you" is "köszönöm" instead of "nüszönöm". I don't speak Hungarian, I admit, but I know a few words and phrases. 🙂
Yeah and for foreigners Köszi is Thanks. I think easier to pronounce

Hungarian is actually pretty easy to read once learn how each letter sounds. In Hungarian, letters will always have the same reading, no matter what, unlike in English, where the word "Pacific Ocean" has 3 different sounds for the letter "C". The hardest part about the language is the grammar, which is difficult to understand even for native speakers. The only reason we understand it at all is because we were exposed to it since birth, but I genuinely have no clue how a foreigner is supposed to learn it.
Paprika and sour cream: we use them separate, combined and any other way you can think of. 😅

The Hungarian language is completely unique, it's just a fairy tale that it resembles Finnish or anything, the grammar and vocabulary, and the ABC are different
exactly ... I am really tired to educate all the commenters on YT ...
I mean watch some Finnish and some Hungarian speaking , as a Hungarian that is by far the closest language rythm wise to ours, surely we don't understand anything but it sounds similar , we don't have any close language family member tho that is for sure

2:33 yeh we called it the Parlament next to the Danube river. We use Forint (Hun Currency) but in many places accepting Euro.
Budapest was originally two separate cities on opposite banks of the river, Buda and Peste, they only became one city when the river was bridged.
More precisely three: Pest, Buda and Óbuda (Old Buda)

Balaton is a large lake, but it's water is that clear before the holiday season only. Cuz its bottom is mainly sandy so the bathing crowd mix the water.
Wien, Bratislava and Budapest are relativelly close to each other. From US perspective, yes they are very close to each other. The 2 bout 120 and 160 miles from Budapest.
Vienna-Budapest-Bratislava(Pozsony) is very close because we were one country in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The architecture, gastronomy culture and other things are very similar.
Bratislava Budapest and Vienna ae all really close and good to visit all on buses/trains. They are all on the Danube, as well as Belgrade, Ingolstadt, Ulm, Regensburg and Ruse (known as mini Vienna). Zargreb and Munich are also on tributaries off it. The Danube is a real artery through Europe. You can do Danube cruises but they are known to be expensive.

This video makes Hungary look a bit less diverse architecture-wise and also in color. One thing I like about Hungary compared to many other former soviet controlled(it was never officially in the union) countries, is that you rarely see 10 buildings next to each other with the same exact style, color, or even roof or fence.
Then you didn't see the Soviet-style prefab housing estates. Unfortunately, there are many of them all over the country.
@Syrenia1552 I know that very well. Outside of those there are still more variation. In many streets I have been to in poland and chezh republic 30/30 houses have grey/white color and the same red roof. I have not seen that in Hungary.
YES, you must go back to Budapest if you want to cross the country because the railway lines that would bypass Budapest were cut off in the Trianon dictate in 1920. So simple.

No we don't pour paprika into sour cream if you mean that :) But we have a lot of meals with paprika and with sour cream, sometimes combined with each other. Of course we also use a lot of garlic, salt, pepper (both black and white), parsley, and some more rare condiments like marjoram, caraway, bay leaf, but that's really it as far as traditional Hungarian cuisine goes.
But it's not the 19th century anymore, we have all types of international cuisine in the restaurants, and you can buy anything in the stores, you may have to look for some ingredients that are rare here but you will get them.
we use any kind of spices ...

@@timeanagy8495
Europe's oldest countries:
1. Greece ? Greece? No. The Greek state ceased to exist after antiquity, so San Marino comes first. It was officially founded in 301.
2. True, there was no independent Croatian state under Yugoslavia, so the 2nd place could be Bulgaria, which existed as the first Bulgarian empire from 681. Of course, in the meantime Bulgaria also ceased to be an independent state and fell victim to the Ottoman conquest. The situation is similar with the Serbian state, which was created in the 8th century. Another possible candidate is Norway, which, according to tradition, was first united by Harald the Fair-haired in 872. Of course, Norway, like the Yugoslavs, has shared a common history with the Danish and Swedish states, so it has not had continuous independence.
3. Hungary. The beginning of the Hungarian state dates back to 895.
France is not in the top three.

The taxi situation isn't that bad, you just need to know which to choose. Like he said the app can help as it will tell you the approximate price in advance, and the most important is to don't take the bland taxis. They have the text "Free lancer" like non branded taxis. They are solo working. The brand taxis are mostly strict to their prices. They may take a longer route but not too bad.
Your pronunciation of "Biztonsági szolgálat" was pretty impressive for the first try. Great reaction and your comments are quite spot-on!

You can choose between strong (erős paprika), and not-so-strong (csemege paprika) tasted creams of paprika, and none of them have sour cream in it, but they get along very well on your plate with sour cream.
Regarding language relations: Hungarian, Finnish and Estonian are distant relatives. All of them are Finno-Ugric, but the second two belong to the Finnic branch, whereas Hungarian belongs to the Ugric one. These languages have been developing separately for at least 2500 years.
As to pronounciation: the letters may seem strange at first, but in Hungarian one letter represents one sound. We've got very few exceptions, and the alphabet contains double letters, like "cs" (which is almost pronounced like the worst two letter of the word "chair"), and a triple letter (dzs: the closest is the first one in the word "jungle").
There are almost no variations in pronounciation and no silent sounds (letters).
We have given two capitals to other countries, like Belgrad , in Hungarian Nándorfehérvár, and Bratislava , Pozsony.
Nem adtunk, hanem csalással elrabolták tőlünk Pozsonyt és Nándorfehérvárat is!
There are many paprika-based dishes, but sour cream is sometimes added only afterward. For example, in soups or stews, according to taste, if it complements the dish.
The mixture of sour cream and flour is called "habarás" in Hungarian. It is a thickening technique commonly used in soups and vegetable stews. The mixture typically consists of flour and sour cream (or other dairy products like yogurt) and is stirred until smooth before being added to the dish to prevent lumps.😊
Serwus is also slang word in Polish meaning „what’s up” It isn’t widely used but everyone will understand you for sure.
It comes from the latin word “servus” meaning “servant”. As a greeting, it means something like “I’m your servant” or “I’m at your servis”. Englis words like “serve, server, service” etc. are related too.
@@attilareinhart2460 Az eredeti a latin servus dominus. A rabszolgák köszöntése volt uruk felé. Jelentése kb Üdvözöllek uram. Később a középkori egyetemeken a diákok köszöntötték így a tanárokat. Don't take a taxi. Budapest actually has a good (and unique) public transport system. Continental Europe's first underground line and I believe tram line 2 is one of the prettiest tram lines of Europe, if not the world. Oh and it's cheap and you won't get ripped off.
Uralic is pronounced u-RA-lic, the stress is on the second syllable. Hungarian, Finnish and Estonian are the 3 biggest Uralic languages. The latter 2 are closely related while Hungarian is _distantly_ related to them. Most Uralic languages are minority languages in Russia. By the way related languages can be far away from each other geographically, for example Icelandic and Hindi are a world apart but they are (distantly) related.

Servus (written as "szervusz" in Hungarian) is actually a Latin greeting, meaning "servant".
Yes but it was never demeaning (as much as i know), it relates to "at your service" "alás szolgája"...

Hungary, Finland and Estonia are the only countries among the Uralics that have sovereign states, all three belong to the Finno-Ugric (Finnish-Hungarian) branch of the language family. However, you can find several other peoples speaking Finno-Ugric and other Uralic languages that do not have sovereign statehood. For example, the Saami in the northernmost parts of the Scandinavian countries and Finland, or loads of others in Russia. The Manshi and Khanti in Russia are the closest linguistic relatives of Hungarians, the Manshi language is actually very-very similar to Hungarian. Sadly, these various languages and peoples all around the Eurasian Steppe are on a brink of extinction due to their minority status surrounded by an overwhelming non-Uralic majority.
Ez vitatott kérdés.
@Bobika08 Nulla darab nyelvész vitatja.
The paprika and sour cream thing is not that excessive. Very prominent ingredients/seasonings, but there are plenty of options without them. Touristy places probably hyperfocused on the internationally known dishes which builds the stereotype, but Hungarian cuisine has a lot more variety.
When taking a taxi, even people from the Hungarian countryside need to be very careful because drivers will take the longest possible route to get you where you want to go. Of course, “robbery” isn’t meant literally, but the final fare will feel like one. The Danube divides Budapest in two, and once a taxi driver took my Turkish friend back and forth across the bridges, claiming that Budapest was built on islands-which is complete nonsense. So, it’s a good idea to check Google Maps during the ride and let the driver know that you’re not stupid and they shouldn’t try to scam you.
That great lake was Balaton :)
The streets of European cities looks nice, because they weren't bulldozed for highways and parking lots. They are not car dependent cities.
The US cities looked similar around 1900. But then the car manufacturers and oil producers bribed... I mean lobbied for a car dependent future. Suburbia was born and the cities went terrible.
Although Slovakia is wedged between Poland and Hungary, they did receive a little land.
16:08 the loss of the land after WW1, links back to the train comment in the start, as most of the trains were going to the other big cities that were cut off, so that is why we don't really have any North-South lines that the guy was mentioning

There are indeed natural caves in Budapest, on the Buda side. A good part of them used as cellars.
On the Pest side, the largest artificial cave system is under the Kőbánya brewery. It is so big that part of it is rented out. The historic buildings of Budapest were built from stones mined from this cave system.

The language. I am not a language teacher but I will tell you a few things. Uralic language, but much more from the Altaic side, not Finnish side.
There are many problems with the Finnish side that the Altaic origin would solve.
This debate starts from the second half of the 19th century, so it is older than the idea that is classified as government propaganda today.
Very different from English. Here, the pronouns are gender-neutral.
There are three tenses. However, there are two types of verb usage, and a 43-letter alphabet.
Each vowel has a short and a long (accented) version.
They are not equal, they can completely change the meaning of a word.
(Eg álom= dream, alom= animal bedding. csikós = cca cowboy, csíkos= striped)
About half of the 43 sounds exist in English as well, but here different letters denote the sounds. "ü" does not exist in English.
What is common: "S" corresponds to the English sh. "SZ" is the same as the English s.
There are soft consonants, ( gy ny ly) the pronunciation of which is close to the Slavic pronunciation.
The y denotes a special sound. At the end of surname it can be i, otherwise a softener. In its latter role, it occurs exclusively in the combination already mentioned.

During the last 1,500 years (since we left “magna hungaria” the region south of the Ural Mountains) our language has been evolving separately from the related languages and it has been influenced by multiple different languages as we encountered (fought and/or allied) with different ethnic groups…
Just imagine how hard for you to understand Shakespeare’s original scripts, and multiply that by a thousand…
Although miraculously we still can read and understand an almost thousand years old Hungarian script (yes it sounds pretty weird for the modern ears, but with some effort you can understand it), which was written down by a Latin speaking monk, who probably had zero understanding of the Hungarian language (which didn’t have any written form before that, since our ancestors used runic writing and probably some kind of knotted cords system, like the Inca quipu or some ingraved sticks, but these materials haven’t survived the last one thousand years…).
Btw
-the full Hungarian alphabet has 44 characters
-it’s one of the five hardest languages to learn for foreigners
-and (because of the above mentioned 1,5 millennia of separation from it’s relatives) there is practically no similar language in the world

Funny that he's been going there 20 years and still can't pronounce Budapest correctly! Hi is Szia and thanks is köszönöm.
The way the romance, the anglo-saxon and the slavic languages are all Indo-European languages is how Hungarian and Finnish are related as Uralic. So a Finnish person would understand as much Hungarian as a Portugese person would understand Russian - just about nothing. As far as I know all the “inbetween” languages were spoken by ethnics in Asia and has been either went extinct or wiped out in the mongol invasion - just some few little tribes remained here and there.
Due heavy inflation Dollar to HUF is just kinda good for you guys (not for us...) at the moment the 100 USD around 39800 Forint which is is 1USD to 398 HUF So we are way cheaper for you at the moment...
On the other hand you just avoid taxi drivers. A 30 miles ride is almost the same price as the new whole country pass that valid for 30 days (Ország bérlet) which is around 50 USD 19000 HUF and you can travel basically everywhere with public transport in the country without additional cost (except InterCity trains where you need to reserve a seat with additional fee and the transfer bus from the airport). Sounds overkill but if you wanna travel a lot in the country and not just Budapest could worth it and a price is almost the same as 7 days with 7*24 hours tickets which only good within Budapest. And for the fun part is the 30 day pass can be purchased by foreign and if someone is a student with the proof of official student card they can buy the student pass which is way cheaper as 90% discount applied. ;) Yep 90%... so 5 USD for a valid student card for 30 days...Or if you under 25 you can get 50% dicount with valid ID. 25 USD so we are paradise for young adventures poeple.

When the Austrians executed the martyrs of Arad in 1849, they celebrated their victory with toasts of beer in Vienna. Very good summary, but it is short a bit. Can't say any "unique" things in such a short (but very fast speaking) video. Anyhow, it's very nice video, but if I can say, Hungary is not equal to Budapest only... Veszpém, Székesfehérvár, Győr, Debrecen, each would get at lest a video to describe. Keep on!
There are a million more beautiful corners of Budapest where he could have performed all that is said in he's video, but this background is quite gloomy, it's rather depressing and ugly.
Don't mistake affordable pices like we're living good, most of the prices are affordable if you're not hungarian. And it's not 300Ft to 1$ anymore, it's more like 420Ft to 1$. The only reason foreign people find our prices cheap is because they get paid a lot more. The average pay in hungary is around 700$/month, so go figure. But if you search up average salary in Hungary it'll show you a lot more, but don't believe it, it's more because most of the top politicians get paid tens of millions of forint per month, either by stealing or scamming and it brings up the average, but if you're not a polotician you can consider yourself lucky if you get paid anywhere close to 1000$/month.
Actually there are more Uralic languages than just Hungarian and Finnish. There is also Estonian and many Sámi languages (and this Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, Sámi thing is just the European part). And there are few dozens more Uralic languages in Siberia.
A magyar egyedülálló, semmi más nyelvvel nincs rokonságban!
At the least you could link this guy's video in your subscription to give him credit (Walter's world?) since most of your video consists of his (fast) ramblings.
He's right about taxis, it's run by a local mob, and there's barely any freelancers cuz they don't let anyone near Budapest.
The guys video is well informative.
if you counting with 1000$=370k Huf wont come bad surprise
Estonia is also Uralic
For one thing, Hungarian is not a Uralic language. Closer to turkic languages. Though we all appreciate your input on Hungarians as general. Great video . Thanks.
It absolutely is a Uralic language, not turkic. Stop with the Turkish Orbán propaganda, and accept your relations with Finnish and Estonian.
rubbish
Only two at Uralic language type? Whole country of Estonia is crying right now
St'Stefan did not christinase we were christians long before that.
Good one. Let’s just say, there were a few Christian people here and split between the Vatican and Constantinapole confrontations but not because so big faith more because at that time kings was validated by the church. So Stefan won, the Vatican became the official authority here and so we became “western” Christians not eastern. The religion thanked his efforts to turned an entire country to the religion (by force) with the “Saint” appointed. That’s not unusual.

It's köszönöm = thank you
If you are really interested in the Uralic language family start with this vid on the Saami. You will be shocked how ancients these Uralic speaking people (including Hungarian) are. Practically they are all living fossiles and dispite being called Uralic they are the original Europeans predating the Ice Age.

You was about right, finno-ugric is the language family. I am impressed and subscribed
Hungarian has nothing to do with Finnish. This is a 19th century idea that is long out of date.
@@Syrenia1552 Which is it than?
Enjoyed your video! 😊 So Hungarian and Finnish are not the only two Finno-Ugric languages in Europe. The Saami also speak an Uralic language, and Estonians too.
Hungarian is not a Finno-Ugric language! It has nothing to do with either Finnish or Estonian. I don't know why you insist on this idea when it has been disproved countless times.
@@Syrenia1552 can you give me the source where it disproves that with proof?

but this guy... okay he or the others are foreigners and they are talking about theri experiences but you guys really really don't understand our culture, our home and our nation
Finland's language belongs in the Germanic language family: they state it very clearly. The Hapsburg rulers in their infinite wisdom created this theory that Hungarian is related to the Finn-Ugor language. They are sticking with this fake theory to this day, teaching Hungarian children these lies!
The truth is the Hungarian (Magyar) language is oldest (next to sanskrit) in Eurasia. So the Finn-Ugor and Germanic language family did borrow some words from it, but they are not closely related. The Sumerian language and many of the Caucasian nations' languages have many similarities with Hungarian.

Sorry, as a Hungarian I see this video silly and uninformed! Everything here is false and far from the reality, Please do your research or go there before you try to inform the public about my beautiful country!
