The cheapest Porsche you can buy new! (Porsche Macan 2022 review)

  • You can get the Porsche Macan with a fantastic 2.9-litre V6 engine - or you can save money and buy the much cheaper 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. But is the cheapest Porsche Macan good value for money? In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, editor Tom Baker conducts a full and independent road test of the 2022 Macan base model to see whether this $85K SUV makes sense - or whether you should spend $20,000 more on the V6 Macan S.
    The Porsche Macan four-cylinder competes with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC.

    Great review Tom! I’ve had my 2L (Gen2 as I preferred real buttons) since Nov and as a daily it works a treat. The Gen3 wait times for any engine were too long and stepping up from a mk7 Golf R, I enjoy the shared engine characteristics (albeit distant) but in a much more plush and refined package. The 2.9 is an amazing engine, but with similar options and on roads the price difference was too large to justify!
    Also the 3/4 Apple car play view does gets a bit of grief but in reality it works really well. With
    the small widget panel the left being configurable you just swipe up/down giving you the different views. You can have CarPlay app running maps, and listen to the radio widget or the other way round, Spotify on the CarPlay and maps in the widget screen.

    A Porsche is not for value for money shoppers, which is what I am. I bought the Mazda CX-5 Signature with 2.5 ltr turbo engine. The Mazda weighs about 300 kg less so the acceleration is better, than 2.0 ltr Porsche, plus it has a good bit more torque. If you swap out the factory tires for something better, like the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 and up the size a bit to 245/50-19, the difference in handling and all other aspects is dramatic. This is exactly what I did. The quality and driving experience of the Mazda is very high and it comes with every worthwhile and important feature for about 20K less than the Porsche. It is very close to the Porsche in driving fun. But you don't get the Porsche emblem or the very high cost of ownership.

    Porsches depreciate like crazy, so you can get a pretty good one with a lot of life in it - if you don't mind buying a slightly used one. You can even get one with extra options, and it will still be a fraction of the cost of the least expensive, new base model. Macan is still new enough I don't think the depreciation has fully kicked in, but give it time...

    • @mheeler
      @mheeler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @johnathonmcalister6645
      @johnathonmcalister6645 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mheeler My '09 Cayenne GTS was $17k w/ 80k miles - while used Macans are still $30k+. Since I tend to drive cars to 300k miles, there's a lot of life left - and $17k is a fraction of the original $84k that it cost in '09 (I have the original sticker with the papers). Still, $30k is a a third the cost of a $90k new Macan, and my Cayenne is 5 years older - so probably fits on the same depreciation curve. Don't know if the percentage is different from other cars - but when you can get a Porsche (or other high end SUV) with lots of options for $17k, or a "plain vanilla" SUV of same age and miles for $8k, then what you get for the price differential starts to look pretty good.

    i just have exactly such a Macan. I cannot complain în general but I was thinking Porsche name would make me feel a little different than driving other cars. Not impressed at all. Clearly the producer was not focused on user but probably on other tehnical aspects. There are cars, for ex. Volvo XC60 , where all what you need is going natural în your hand. Every thing is at the right place. Not with Macan where the heating of the steering wheel was discovered by me after some time hidden under the steering wheel, maybe Porsche saved some paint instead to put a visible sign. The console space is accesibile by turning back not easy during drivinig. Mirrors and visibility is not the best. For viewing camera it is possible only by going to rear ! Of course you cannot drive in rear always when you need a camera view. Not to mention that camera view when the car is presented at 90 degrees position to driving direction ! Thus many unnatural things. This is why I said Porsche was not making the car for people.
    În addition the interior is obsolete even if the quality is not so bad. It is clear Porsche didn't invested în this facelift even if the price was kept high. Conclusion: it is better to look from outside than to drive it. It means I can have the badge visible to other people but not to enjoy myself. If I ignore all these I can say the car is Ok. The review was very good , I just added some from my recent experience. Just to mention I took Macan being the only car available in stock în these curios times.

    $100K for a super small basic Porsche CUV? Omfg. And the $2K for the Bose is laughable.

      I’d disagree if you’re someone who cares about driving dynamics. If you just want a luxurious small suv or you’re just buying for a badge, then yes it’s overpriced. But it drives so much better and feels far superior if you love driving and the feel of driving than any competitor.

    the interior looks cheap and dated, I'd rather buy a full option cx60 and save 30k 😆😆

      The CX60 interior looks like every other Mazda. And the exterior looks like, well, pretty boring. The drive will be even more underwhelming. Clearly Alexander you haven’t driven a Macan ?

      I think it is - relatively speaking. That 2.9 is much more expensive in other vehicles that it appears in.

      I think you’re confused - the ‘eh’ after Porsche is very soft, and certainly not Porsha
