jin was the one who pushed the girl against the locker, he apologized about 15 times right when the scene ended 😭 it’s in the shooting sketch.
loved the honest reaction! bts really make me appreciate genres that i may have not dabbled into before. you guys make my day :)

I mean when you look into the lyrics not really. They are describing teen angst and reckless teenage love. It's just as true as everything else they've sung about. Most boys act like that when their teens. they were teenage/young boys so they were able to tell people first hand how it was

@@elithluxe7568 Just b/c they do it doesn't mean it's right. Bulling someone b/c you like them does not do good but harm to the victim. And yes, they would be considered a victim, because it's still bullying. But yeah, they portrayed the concept very well and everything else. However, this doesn't in any way justify these sorts of actions irl. In case you didn't know, this sort of bullying still does lead to self harm and suicide, no matter the true intentions behind it. The actions were done.

The fact that you guys weren't really 'feeling' this song proves BTS' strength when it comes to their depth of musical genres - because this song is in my top 5 all-time faves!
But *my* background of musical taste before discovering BTS was alt-rock -- so the hard beat, driving guitars, and growly vocals and raps in this song just absolutely DO IT for me, though it doesn't for you guys
And that's ok!! Again, it just punctuates how fantastic BTS' discography is - pretty much anyone can find a BTS song that suits their current musical tastes; but if they continue the journey they might discover a few more genres they didn't like before that come to grow on them. For instance, I was *never* a hip-hop or rap fan before BTS, but now I truly love many of their songs in those genres

  • @jcxkth07

Jordan, it is totally okay to not relate or like every song! BTS has such a diverse discography, and some songs hit right away and others don’t! I will admit this song didn’t hit for me the first time either, and then it slowly grew on me. Also, the beginning part from the music video (what Jin was hearing to) was a little snippet of Just One Day 😉 Personally, that one definitely hit me from the get-go. Thank you guys for always giving a honest and genuine reaction. I much rather hear you guys give an honest reaction instead of a fake one. Thank you for always having an open-mind!

Boy in Luv and their other music video War of Hormone, is basically displaying immature teenage boy love- them expressing their "teenage angst". Jin pushing the girl against the door is a very common scene that occurs in kdramas, which does look rough lol but the directors wanted it that way and in the behind the scenes of the song-Jin apologizes for doing that because it is so unlike them lmao. But yeah, these songs just portray like a certain phase of a young boy's wants for love etc. They would most def not do these type of songs again

About Boy in Luv’s connection to Boy with Luv, I remembered something from an interview and had to look it up. This is a quote from RM: “In 2014, we released a song called ‘Boy In Luv.’ And that’s about young love, teen love,” RM said at the time. “This time, you know, we grew up. And we sing about what true love is.” The Korean name for the song is ‘A Poem for Small Things’ which is so adorable. Can’t wait until you guys get to it! 💜

26:20 Thank you Jared for mentioning Jin 🥰 To be honest, Jin was usually the least noticed because he's got lesser parts in their earlier songs. So it makes me happy when one gets curious to see what Jin has in store coz he definitely is talented and a skilled vocalist just like the others. He's just really the least confident during their earlier years. Over the years, he's got more comfy and confident - mostly coz the other members always help him feel better about himself. That's also when Jin learned to love himself more 🥰💜
O--pa (oppa) is like 'hyung', but only girls use it. Somehow, it referred to boyfriend too coz younger girls call their older boyfriends oppa.
Jordan is right that the two songs are quite connected. When you guys check out the difference between Boy in Luv and Boy With Luv, I suggest you watch the explanation vid from DKDKTV. That explained it well, also the different aspects of the music video. It shows the growth between the two songs, as well as the growth on the boys' love 😊
And Jared singing "Say what you want" will rent free in my head for months! 🤭😂 Thanks for this reaction my fave brothers 💜

The part with the girl is from kpop dramas that were popular at that time. The have a behind the scenes where they apologized to her constantly and where asking if she was ok with the acting and such.

  • @tajbabydoll
    @tajbabydoll 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

The deep voice is Taehyung (V) under all the growling.
The song that was in Jin's headphones is "Just One Day". Can't wait for you to react to that. So glad you're watching the older love performance, watching the newer ones can ruin a bit of the surprise and fun of seeing the whole live performance put together as they wanted it, though. Enjoyed this reaction! Never feel like you have to love every song, that's neither realistic nor expected by ARMY.
Side note, there is appa, pronounced "ah-pa" which means "Dad" and then there is oppa pronounced "oh-pa" which means "older brother or older male in the same generation".

Thanks for your honest reaction guys! When I first heard Boy In Luv I also didn't like it that much but after listening to it over 100x I luv it now XD J-hope has my favourite line and when he performs it there's so much energy. The whole scene with pushing the girl was very awkward I also hated it because it looked like they were just messing with her but that is the video director's fault. BTS didn't feel comfortable pushing her around and Jin even apologized for being too rough. In a way it's showcasing BTS growing up and falling in love. They were young and inexperienced here but in Boy With Luv it's their response to Boy in Luv and they show how much they matured since then

Thank you for pointing out that the Director etc staff were likely the cause of the scenes being so rough. It’s important to note that the time it was put out still had many stereotypes on young love like boys being mean to girls and blaming them as if its their fault the boys become distracted. Its still seen today but far less due to society as a whole maturing some as mental health began to be more important in the public eye

yes it is a song qbout young love, the members described it as the type of love that is immature, obsessive, and aggressive/possessive. They grow over the years then made the song "Boy with Luv" which is the opposite type of love

  • @ranibu5279
    @ranibu5279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's a song from the POV of a highly anxious, immature, young person - - one who insists that he be called an 'oppa'. This is a total oppoaite of the more mature, secure person who holds space for their beloved in Boy with Luv. The parallels of the two songs including the titles were intentional.

As you said, the song came out in 2014. BTS were still fairly new to the Kpop scene and didn't have much, if any, input into the music videos. They followed directions. At the time, being aggressive with girls the way Jin was doing was how girls were being treated in popular shows and other media. The guys were just following the trend, as they were told to. As others have said, as soon as they called cut on the locker scene, Jin immediately started apologizing to the girl. It may have been popular and expected, but it wasn't really what the boys wanted to do. Their early music tends to have the rappers doing the verses and the vocal line doing the chorus. Not every song will resonate with you and ARMY is okay with that. Also, they sang about love, romance, and physical attraction in their first three albums, but then stopped focusing on those topics. Since they made that change, any time they "speak" to what seems to be a lover or girlfriend, it's almost always actually addressing ARMY.
Also, I'm not Korean but I'm going to offer my thoughts on the line about being dust. This is not the only song where RM has lyrics referring to people as dust. In Korea, they have a yearly problem with dust in the air. That dust is one of the reasons why Korean and Japanese citizens wore masks long before the pandemic. The dust is irritating, annoying, and raises serious health concerns. So, if RM is comparing himself to dust in the eyes of the girl, then it implies that he is annoying and irritating and she feels the need to be shielded from him. Again, these are just my thoughts on the meaning of "dust" in this song. I hope that helps it make more sense.

    • @izzatys7037
      @izzatys7037 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree, on several songs he did make reference that people = dust = annoying

    • @sczezne
      @sczezne ปีที่แล้ว

I disagree with the comment about following the trend. Boy in luv is still a part of the school trilogy that talks a lot about toxic relationships and expectations we have about love that not always are true or healty. they did it because it was part of the narrative that they needed to tell this story, not just because they were following the trend or just because they were told to... well, if it was actually necessary, hm, that's a different question

I personally thank you for being honest about how you feel about the song. I know that there would probably be other fans that might feel bad about reactors not enjoying the song they like, but trust me, ARMYs always know when someone isn't being honest or genuine when they're commenting about the video/music they're reacting to.
About the song, I think there's a separate storyline on their discography which started from this song and ended with "Boy With Luv".
This album was followed by the full album "Dark & Wild", with Danger and War Of Hormone as the songs they released MVs of. I think it was mentioned somewhere that 'Boy In Luv' talked about immature love from a teenager (first love), which shows how a boy tries to act tough to win the girl's heart and look more mature than he truly is (hence the rough handling scene with the girl, I guess), which then continues to 'War of Hormone' which talks about a teenage boy's first encounter with lust, and 'Danger', which talks about their first heartbreak. 'Boy With Luv' becomes somewhat an epilogue to that storyline which shows how a man has grown mature and learned more about love.
ps. the hand sign at the end of BIL was the gun hand sign which is basically the classic Bangtan sign that they use in their group intro/greeting (Korean version, where they form the sign while saying "2,3, Bangtan"). this sign will change on BWL as a sign that they have evolved to become more mature just the way the "boy" in the song has

Jordan, it's okay if a song wasn't something that hits you/you didn't feel it too much, not every single song would be your cup of tea, having a neutral feeling about a song wouldn't diminish your admiration towards BTS or anything, also this is a reaction video and an honest opinion is more valuable and would be more appreciated than a lukewarm "oh i like it!" just to appease ARMYs. BTS have a very extensive discography so its normal for us to have songs we strongly feels about and songs that didn't. thank you for the video🥺 have a great week ahead💜

I suspected this would be underwhelming for you guys, probably cuz it’s kinda similar in vibe and structure to NO and No More Dream. Also because I think it’s a common kpop attribute to be “hard” and “tough”. But you’ll see on their next album, BTS changes things up, and digs deeper into the artistry of their music and display more versatility. Also, im excited for y’all to get into just one day and tomorrow. It is the switch up I think you guys need from BTS :) lastly, some of their best work are actually their B side tracks. The songs they release are more to get people excited

I've always taken Boy in Luv aka BIL as the classic immature love a teenager encounters where you look for love in partners and other people to affirm your personality and self worth, whereas Boy with Luv aka BWL is a more mature and complete love where the person is already confident in their identity and can love themselves so they can offer a purer form of love to their object of affections.
Ps. Jin didn't want to do the locker scene and apologised a lot to the actress but the director had a vision for it and they weren't in the position yet to veto any part of the MV unlike today.

Francesca's story made me tear up because I went through the same thing around the same time. 2014 was a dark time for me, and while I've found BTS during their debut days, it was clicking on YT's recommendation for 'Boy In Luv' that finally reeled me in completely, and I feel blessed for it because it got me to find Tomorrow. Tomorrow is one of the songs from BTS that will forever mean a lot to me. the lyrics to that song lifted up my soul and helped me through the hardest time of my life. It was during that time when I felt inspired to get back to school and get back on my feet. to this day, Tomorrow's lyrics becomes the motivation that pushes me to carry on no matter what that I even got them tattooed on my skin for a personal memento
(because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest)

So, during the 2010's that 'roughness' was a really popular trope in Kdramas. Called Kabedon or kabe-don (Japanese: 壁ドン; kabe, "wall", and don, "bang") refers to the action of slapping a wall fiercely, which produces the sound "don".
The intro to the song you love is actually a sample of 'Just One Day' and 'What Am I To You' also by BTS.
The song came out during their school trilogy area. It speaks of immature/first love.
It's a good song (and before BTS started focusing on less gendered/romantic lyrics), but it's certainly a sign of the times/a more immature period.
    Oppa [Oh-Pah]
But you're right that BTS has become more progressive/matured over the years. You're right in that it show in their music/lyricism.
'Boy With Love- A Poem of Small Things' is almost a bookend/rebuttal to 'Boy In Love' as is shows a healthier more secure love. It has a different genre/structure than the former as well.
The entire 'Love Yourself' series is an exploration of different types of love and how it pertains to the self. Can't wait till you guys get to that era!
On another note, I started listening to Kpop in 2015 and became an ARMY sometime between then a 2016. During one of the darkest times in my life, when my world had shattered around me and I was holding onto (what seemed like) an impossible dream, the song 'Tomorrow' literally saved my life.
I know that sounds like an over exaggerated cliché, but my disability had caught up with me and I felt like an alien. I was in so much pain- I was drowning in it and wanted to end it.
Nothing was going right, I was burnt out, and it felt like the whole world hated me for how I was born.
But, I held onto the message of the lyrics as I played this song on repeat. The lyrics use the Socratic Method to encourage the listener not to give up hope and to keep fighting for your dreams.
'Tomorrow' is a B-side, so it doesn't get as many reactions, but the song and the production alone are top notch (produced by Suga).
Anyway, I really look forward and appreciate your reactions. Thank you for being so open minded and sincere! 💜

You will find that as you discover more and more of BTS' music, they actually have themes or a story that they tell through their albums. Some songs, like this one, are apart of a story, but don't necessarily reflect BTS' exact thoughts.
This song, as well as the whole Skool Luv Affair album, tells the story of a stereotypical high school love story with a kdrama style music video. In this song, they sing about their nervousness and their confusion over their feelings for this girl. There is a sense of arrogance in this song as they sing, “If you lose a guy like me, you’ll regret it.”, but mixed with nervousness of trying to win this girl.
However, the way they battle with themselves in the lyrics leads me to believe that BTS themselves have an underlying message of highlighting the way toxic masculinity standards and expectations can cause a battle within a young boy's mind. It's the constant fight of wanting to win this girl over, but trying not to let this "tough guy masculinity" facade fall. It's why they constantly sing about "why are you shaking my heart?" Why are you shaking the image of the "tough guy", the image I'm SUPPOSED to be like, what im EXPECTED to be like. It all reflects how the story and music video have incorporated stereotypical kdrama scenes, and can be viewed as the classic "bad boy" concept that everyone knows and expects from "boy bands".
Hope this gave you guys a bit more insight, but ARMY do understand that not every song will hit you. Please keep reacting to lots of amazing BTS songs, as they almost always have a message that sometimes needs to be explored a little deeper before understanding it fully. :)

This song is iconic, other groups under their label have made full covers, it's like a rite of passage. Even if you didn't like it I think it's important that you know of it, Boy with luv is having a conversation with this song. This is a cheeky love song and they're trying to be agressive but they grew into themselves and their concept with love changed later in their career. Thank you for the reactions!

RM explains this 'skool luv' era in an interview with Grammy Museum if you're interested. I think it's on yt. But the next chapter you watch on RoB will also explain the difficulties a couple of songs during this era brought BTS.
But i understand this song as reflecting the obsession of teen years with romance etc (whereas years later, 'boy with luv' is about the fulfilmt of true love, as well as being a msg of thanks/love to army for the love we give them)
The uncomfortable scene where Jin pushes the girl up against the locker, i think reflects a trope used in anime/manga that was popular at the time called 'Kabedon' where a lovesick boy makes his 'confession of love' to a girl who is then impressed (or not) by the boy's display of confidence... but i think Kabedon is now out of fashion? I hope so..
Anyway, hope it gives a little background as to why they probably included the scene like this in the MV, as it was popular in certain manga.

Yes. Their songs were a little aggressive before😂 It just fits them during those years since they were only young men, and so their fans. BTS always joke about how they were so desperate and eager back then because of this kind of music and dance practices, and even wondered why they still have fans during those years. but as you deep dive in their discography (in order) you'll notice how much they've grown and mature. their music now is more mellow and the lyrics centers about self-reflection.

I think back then or more like 2013 or so on you'll hear Jin and V share one line, as in for example in We Are Bulletproof pt2, when V says the lines "Everywhere I go, everything I do 나 보여줄게 칼을 갈아왔던 만큼 날 무시하던 많은 사람들 이젠" that was his only line and later on Jin says the exact same line, so when listening to older songs you'll normally not hear much from V and Jin, and although I'm not sure why, it still made a really good song. Along with boy in luv (which is one of my favourite songs) is a very nostalgic song for me, although I did not find bts during that time (I only found them 2 years after this song was out) it still makes me feel so back in that time. To be completely honest I have songs from them that I personally don't like as much, and I don't think it has to do much with age here, I'd say it's the taste in music that people have , like most people don't know this but I don't like spring day that much, I love the visuals, the vocals etc. But the song just doesn't stick to me and that's because I don't really stick to sadder songs so it's all right if you don't like specific songs, ARMY doesn't care, as long as BTS is being respected than we just support what people's opinions are, anyways I really enjoy this video and I'm looking forward to seeing more! 💜

Hi guys. I love this song for the energy. I like how you "get" the lyrics once you look into the translation.
It is one of the songs which was criticised for misogyny, but it is, in my mind, a parody of young immature male crush where the boy doesn't know how to communicate with girls. It's pretty accurate in my experience of young teenage boys driven by their hormones, but without much real experience of knowing girls as normal people. Ironically I think of it as one where BTS actually adopt a persona where they are expressing their own vulnerability. We have all felt like this, but all that braggadocio used by teenage boys ... yeah, off-putting, but it's such a mask for their real insecurities.
I love how the dance practice shows something of a teenage guy's body language in this situation too. Very clever! I agree about how the choreo is so diverse and the dance practice allows you to really appreciate more about the whole song. You showed me some details I missed!
The MV uses tropes common in many school Kdramas (and some others) of the era - probably seldom actually used in real life by schoolboys, and I think they are less common now in dramas.
I appreciate how you were both shocked by the physical things with the girl. Korea is not always so enlightened about male/female relationships or feminism (which I see as a move to emancipate men from narrow roles and responsibilities just as women). Jin was the one who pushed her into the locker, and apparently he after the filming he apologised to er so much because he felt so bad that he had to do that. I think I saw someone write that she was a cousin of one of the boys - but that might have been the girl in War of Hormone.
It's absolutely fine if you don't like a song, but please don't let any potential diffidence get in the way of saying so. ARMY values honesty. In particular, I always want to hear why something doesn't appeal just as much as why someone does like something. It's very often even more interesting.

Sorry I hit send before I completed my thought. BTS’ lyrics are something else. They write a lot of their music, songs and they weren’t afraid to address certain social issues in their country. Some of their songs have explanation/theory videos which are helpful. I think of N.O., Baepsae, and Spring Day that really impressed me so much after I listened to an explanation video - lyrics were very deep. I came across a BTS dance practice video on TH-cam in fall of 2015 and I was in awe of these talented young men and became a fan. I really like that you play the dance practice of the song you’re reacting to. By the way I’m an older Army, I’m 70 yrs old and still love this group. "Boy With Love" is, in a way, a thematical continuation of "Boy In Luv". "Boy With Luv" depicts a mature view/approach to romance (or even platonic love), as opposed to the youthful/immature approach to love depicted in "Boys In Luv". "Boy With Luv" is optimistic, cheerful and relaxed, it understands that being in love with someone goes beyond romantic interest and lust, that spending quality time with the other person on the daily is a huge part of a healthy relationship. It speaks about enjoying the small things in mundane daily life, and wanting to get to know the interests, customs and small details of the other person. It's about wanting to get to know another person and build a friendship, whether it becomes more than that or not. "Boy In Luv" is clumsy, impulsive, eager, desperate, and proud. It's the boy that wants to grow up fast and become a cool strong man. It's the boy that wants to prove himself/his worth, pursue the girl he's into, be admired, and have a passionate sweet romance. He wants to be wanted and to provide protection, but he doesn't know how to express his feelings or how to be delicate.
*The Korean titles of these two songs are very illustrative:
    - Boy In Luv is called "상남자" = "Manly Man".
    - Boy With Luv is called "작은 것들을 위한 시" = "A Poem for Small Things".
    ...............................................
    About the Music Video:
Pushing the girl against the lockers is a shoujo manga/anime trope. In classic/older shoujo manga/anime, in high school romantic-drama or romantic-comedy settings, it used to be a cliché scene when the male love interest would push the female protagonist into a corner of a room or against a wall, to escalate conflict. Usually, this would happen when "the bad boy with the heart of gold" or "cold boy with lots of feelings underneath a poker face" or "the playboy who finally falls in love for real" (etc) was falling in love, having a hard time dealing with his feelings and getting impatient... Sometimes it could be a moment of tension after which the girl would get upset or angry and they would have a fight, so eventually he would have to reflect and learn to communicate with a more open/vulnerable/assertive approach. But, other times, it was just a scene in which the girl had been avoiding the guy or avoiding a conversation (due to insecurity or shyness or being dense), and he would force her into having a real/direct confrontation/talk. They would stare at each other eyes, and then have a dialogue, and it could end up resolving an issue or creating a new one. It's a scene that would show the (sexual/romantic) tension between the characters. Usually it doesn't end on a kiss or anything like that, since shoujos tend to showcase a lot of gradual slow buildup into romance or youthful awkwardness and misunderstandings, but physical progress is slow and usually they're not very explicit. It could end with a kiss though, it depends on the story. Anyways, we could argue that these depictions of romance are agressive and sexist, or that it's natural for young people to be clumsy and reckless when starting to develop crushes for the first time. Regardless of whether these old clichés are ok or not, I simply am trying to explain the context of that imaginery.
Although this is a theory on my part (not something BTS said), I am pretty confident when saying that the director of this music video was intending to put together scenes that were representing shoujo tropes, since I found them to be very familiar for someone who knows about anime/manga genres/tropes.
This interpretation of the MV also makes sense considering the concept of Dark & Wild album was representing how young boys (still in school) deal with love and the complex feelings that these experiences entail (such as desire, jealousy, heartbreak, anger after betrayal, etc). Boy In Luv specifically, is depicting how a teenager feels when he's developing sexual/romantic interest and has his first crush, and how they may not know how they should confess or approach their crush.
When BTS members were recording this video, Jin was uncomfortable with having to pretend to manhandle the actress, but I supposed they had to do what the director said, since it was earlier in their careers. Also, the girl was fine, you don't have to worry. Also, in relation to why various members are seducing the same woman and the confession scene alternates between different members... I assume it was cheaper to hire one actress only, I don't think it was necessarily intended to make the boys compete for the same girl, or that it was supposed to be a reverse harem, I don't think the video was supposed to show a complex story, I think she may be representing different girls or the boys could be representing the same guy. It doesn't really matter much how you interpret this.
    Notes:
    - Manga = japanese comic book. They're traditionally drawn by hand with ink, in black and white, published periodically as they're being written (on weekly or monthly magazines that compile different stories that are directed to a common demographic), published as a book, read from right to left. Nowadays, popular mangas also have official online publications that are translated to multiple langages, you pay a monthly or anual subscription. The manga authors are called mangaka and they may have assistants.
(There's other names for comics from different countries, for example, Korean comics are called webtoons and these are often done with digital art, colored, and read from top to bottom/on a vertical format.)
    - Anime = Japanese animation. Some animes are adaptations of manga, other are original stories.
    - Shoujo = literary genre of manga and anime, in which the targeted audience are primarily girls and young women. It usually depicts romantic stories which the protagonist is a teenage woman. It can be combined with elements of family drama, comedy, slice of life (coming of age), fantasy, action, adventure, or any other genre.
    - Harem = Stories in which a male protagonist has multiple female love interests who are interested in him.
    - Reverse harem = Stories in which the female protagonist has multiple male love interests who are pursuing her.
